In 1996, Placebo released their self-titled debut album. The years passed, the trio became a duet and now they are celebrating their 20th anniversary with a huge tour.
A stunning career: 7 albums, several Eps and collections, a huge library of amazing songs that accompanied thousands of fans from around the world. 20 years of unforgettable memories to celebrate. We were all waiting for this fantastic event with a lot of love and emotion.
Brian Molko had already warned “if you want to see us play songs like ‘Pure Morning’ and ‘Nancy Boy’ which we haven’t played in almost ten years and may not play again, then you’d better come along to these shows! We’ll have some surprises in there too. “
So, we all expected a Dream Set list but it is clear that pleasing everyone, it would have been almost impossible.
Here I am… in Dijon, Zenith Concert Hall, on April 22, the third gig on this tour for myself and here are my impressions.
In opening, Last Train and I am already blown away. The rockers from Mulhouse are incredible, devastating energy, raging guitars, black & white, shadow & penumbra atmosphere, lot of smoke, a great show.
Definitely, first part already set the fire for evening. I’ll come back soon with more details on this young and talented band who released their first album, but who has alreday with many years of stage experience behind them.
The Placebo show begins. In the introduction, the video Every You Every Me, the special version Early Cut unveiled for the first time at the start of the tour “unreleased promo video” more provocative and even better than the original one. Followed by a clip that takes us in a time travel full of emotion. A Visual that traces their career in images: studio, touring, video clips, meetings…
Finally, they arrive on stage with the first lines of Pure Morning, so pure and captivating… First the 4 acolytes, their excellent supporting band: Matt Lunn (drums), Fiona Brice (violin, keyboard, backing vocals), Nick Gavrilovic (keyboard, guitar) and of course, William Lloyd (bass, guitar, keyboard) that accompanies them almost since their beginning.
Then Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal arrive in big ovations and cries, the audience express their happiness and excitement.
Next song, Loud Like Love and then the tracks are following with frenzy: Jesus Son the latest single, Sleeping with Ghosts and Special Needs always so sublimes, Too Many Friends and 20 Years with Stefan at the piano and a Brian very expressive and emotional.
Memories rise to surface. Personally, I was never disappointed. Each album always sounds better than the other one, a challenge. Their sound is a little bit like the good wine, it becomes better with time.
The same for the audience … in fact, it would be great to stop saying that their audience has aged – so what? They are still enthusiastic and passionate, so unleashed behind the barriers or jumping on the seats in the stands. There is no age in music – we’re all the same.
One strong and emotional moment, Without You I’m Nothing – grandiose in live – even more poignant now, when on the screens, we see them alongside of the huge David Bowie.
A Placebo’s tribute to the Genius, who inspired them and also encouraged and supported their career.
Protect Me From What I Want, unusually sung in English in France. 36 Degrees in slow version, Lady Of The Flowers, Devil in the Details, Space Monkey, Exit Wounds that I totally adore with that tearing ‘Want you so bad I can taste, it but you’re nowhere to be found… ‘. “it always gives me thrills.
Melancholy, tenderness, nostalgia…
The show is sublime, perfect, breath-taking. Brian Molko’s pure, beautiful and unique voice resonates with a lot of power. He changes the guitars: blue, red or white and he mastered his riffs perfectly. Stefan Olsdal, impeccable, is alternating bass and classical guitars, when he is not behind the piano.
And then the announcement “that was the end of our melancholic section. It’s time to have some fun, it’s our anniversary. Are you ready for this? “
And here they go: For What It’s Worth, Slave to The Wage, Special K, Song To say Goodbye, The Bitter End. The atmosphere is hot. The audience is happy and enjoys every moment.
First encore… Teenage Angst – slow version, Nancy Boy (Stefan arrives with his magnificent Rainbow colours bass guitar) and InfraRed keeping for the second encore and the end: Running Up That Hill, the beautiful cover of Kate Bush.
A perfect and fabulous show as it should be for such an occasion.
Thank you, Placebo. We were blessed and we hope that there will be still minimum “20 years to go” to have the happiness to see you over and over again.

En 1996, Placebo sortait leur premier album éponyme. Les années ont passées, et le trio devenu duo, fête déjà leur 20 ème anniversaire avec une tournée gigantesque. Une carrière époustouflante : 7 albums, plusieurs Eps et compilations, une immense bibliothèque des chansons magnifiques qui ont accompagnées de milliers de fans du monde entier.
20 ans des souvenirs mémorables. Ça se fête ! On attendait cette réunion avec beaucoup d’émotion et d’impatience.
Brian Molko avait déjà prévenu « si vous voulez nous voir jouer des titres qu’on n’a pas joués depuis presque dix ans, vous feriez bien de venir à ces concerts. Et il y aura des surprises aussi »
Mais, c’est clair que réaliser la setlist de rêve et parfaite pour chacun, sera une chose quasi impossible.
Je me retrouve donc à Dijon, au Zénith, le 22 Avril dernier, troisième étape dans la tournée pour moi. Voilà mes impressions.
En ouverture, et je prends déjà une grosse claque avec Last Train qui les accompagne pour plusieurs dates françaises. Les rockeurs de Mulhouse sont plus qu’à la hauteur : énergie dévastatrice, guitares ravageuses, ambiance ombre – pénombre, noir et blanc, beaucoup de fumée.
Une première partie qui met déjà le feu la soirée. Je reviendrais bientôt avec bien plus d’informations sur ce jeune groupe talentueux qui vient de sortir leur premier album, mais qui a déjà beaucoup d’années expérience de scène à leur actif.
Le show Placebo commence avec en introduction la vidéo Every You Every Me, la version spéciale dévoilée pour la première fois en début de leur tournée «the unreleased promo video » plus provoc et encore meilleure que la classique, suivie par un clip qui nous embarque dans un voyage temporel chargé d’émotion. Un visuel qui retrace la carrière en images de la grande discographie de Placebo : images des studio, tournées, vidéo clips, rencontres…
Tout suite après, ils arrivent sur scène dans les accords pures et envoutants de Pure Morning…
D’abord, les 4 acolytes de leur excellent group d’accompagnement Matt Lunn (batterie), Fiona Brice (violon, clavier, chœurs), Nick Gavrilovic (clavier, guitare) et bien sûr William Lloyd (bass, guitare, clavier) qui les accompagne depuis pratiquement leur début.
Ensuite Stefan Olsdal et Brian Molko arrivent à leur tour dans les ovations et les cris du public, heureux et excité.
Suit Loud Like Love et les titres s’enchaînent avec frénésie, Jesus Son, le dernier single, Sleeping with Ghosts et Special Needs toujours aussi sublimes, Lazarus, le nouveau titre, Too Many Friends et 20 Years avec Stefan au piano et un Brian très expressif et émotionné.
Les souvenirs remontent à la surface. Les texte mélancoliques, noirs… Personnellement, je n’ai jamais été déçue. A chaque album toujours un meilleur son osé, un défi. Un son un peu comme le bon vin, il est devenu mieux avec le temps.
Pareil pour le public … en fait, il faudra arrêter de dire que leur public a vieilli – et alors ? Il est toujours enthousiaste, beau et passionné, se déchainant derrière les barrières ou sautillant sur les sièges dans les gradins. Il n’y a pas d’âge dans la musique – on est tous pareils.
L’un des moments forts et chargé d’émotion, Without You I’m Nothing –grandiose en live – encore plus poignante maintenant, quand sur les écrans on les revoie aux côtés de l’immense David Bowie.
Un bel hommage de la part de Placebo, dont la carrière doit beaucoup à ce Génie, qui les avait beaucoup inspiré mais aussi encouragé et soutenu dans leur carrière.
Protect Me From What I Want, chantée inhabituellement en anglais pour un concert français. 36 Degrees en version lente, Lady Of The Flowers, Devil in Details, Space Monkey, Exit Wounds que j’adore avec ce lacérant « Want you so bad I can taste, it but you’re nowhere to be found… » ça me donne toujours la chair de poule.
Le show est sublime, parfait, à couper le souffle. Brian Molko, la voix pure, magnifique et inégalable résonne avec beaucoup de puissance. Il change les guitares bleu, rouge ou blanc en maitrisant ses riffs parfaitement. Stefan Olsdal impeccable, alterne la basse et la guitare classique, quand il n’est pas derrière le piano.
Mélancolie, tendresse, nostalgie…
Et puis l’annonce « c’était la fin de notre section mélancolique. Il est temps de s’amuser un peu, c’est notre anniversaire. Vous êtes prêts ? »
L’ambiance se réchauffe et la fosse s’anime avec For What It’s Worth, Slave To The Wage, Special K, Song To say Goodbye, The Bitter End. Le public est heureux et profite de chaque instant.
Premier rappel… Teenage Angst, en version lente, Nancy Boy (où Stefan arrive avec sa magnifique basse aux couleurs arc-en-ciel) et Infra-Red, en gardant pour le deuxième rappel et la fin : Running Up That Hill, la très belle reprise de Kate Bush.
Un show parfait, fabuleux comme il se doit à une telle occasion.
Merci Placebo. Nous espérons qu’il nous reste encore minimum 20 ans « 20 years to go » pour avoir le bonheur de vous revoir encore en encore.
