Last Thursday, on the pretty small stage of the bar -restaurant Pop-Up du Label in Paris, two lovely musical discoveries.
First arrives Emmy the Great, a British charming young lady armed with a guitar, two keyboards and a lovely big smile who is touring in support of her third album “Second Love”.
Delicate voice, pure folk melodies and beautiful rhythms, her music universe is calm and peaceful.
Born in China, she sings both in English and Chinese and she easily communicate with the audience.
Every song has a story – “Social Halo” – beautiful ballad talking about Soho District in Hong Kong, a city that she obviously loves in particular, or – “Phoenixes”- inspired by River Phoenix’s Family.
Soulful and smart, her music irradiates beauty and nostalgia. “Swimming Pool” and “Part of Me” are my favourites.
Definitely, Emmy is a talented songwriter and delivered a nice show with a modern pop folk soundscape.
For the second part of the evening, we dive in the mystique universe of Throws.
Debut album for the two British old friends Mike Lindsey and Sam Genders, they actually renew their partnership after being together in band named Tunng, about ten years ago.
Red lights and sombre ambience, we have the illusion that we penetrate in the dark room. Soon we’ll be hypnotized.
The show started with “The Harbour”, the first single of the duo’s eponym album: a powerful song, which perfectly gives the tone of what we should expect to hear from this evening performance.
Electro pop sound, guitars, strings, synths, strange sounds machine, effects, powerful standing drums invade the stage.
Sophisticated noises on “Punch Drunk Sober”, “Bask” (great bass introduction) or “Knife” alternate with nice folk melodies as “Silence in between”, “Sun Gun” or “Play the Part”, as about “Under the Ice”a- it is a poem embraced by beautiful piano lines and violin.
Beautiful vocals, the complicity of Mike and Sam is evident, added by the fantastic performance of Chris Hamilton at standing drums.
The sound is higher and higher, the show increase in power, and the stage seems to be too small for them. The final is energetic.
Surrounded by wonderful sound, we travelled to the Island’s magical landscapes and to the Reykjavik’s bustling streets where Throws escaped since a while and where they found the inspiration to write their beautiful album. Great discovery.

Jeudi dernier, sur la petite scène du bar-restaurant Pop-Up du Label à Paris, deux belles découvertes musicales.
Tout d’abord arrive Emmy The Great, chanteuse Londonienne, en tournée pour promouvoir son troisième album “Second Love”, une charmante jeune femme armée d’une guitare, deux claviers et d’un grand sourire.
Voix délicate, mélodies folk avec des beaux rythmes, sa musique est calme et apaisante.
Née en Chine, Emmy chante en anglais et en chinois et communique facilement avec le public. Elle partage avec aisance ses histoires et ses expériences personnelles qui ont inspiré ses chansons.
Social Halo –belle balade inspirée du quartier de Soho à Hong Kong, une ville qu’elle aime particulièrement, ou – Phoenixes – inspirée par la famille de l’acteur River Phoenix.

En deuxième partie de la soirée, nous plongeons dans l’univers et l’ambiance mystique des Throws.
Venus défendre leur premier album, le duo britannique Mike Lindsey et Sam Genders, deux vieux amis exilés en Islande, renouvellent leur partenariat après avoir chanté ensemble dans le groupe Tunng, il y a une dizaine années.
Lumières rouges et ambiance sombre, nous avons l’illusion de pénétrer dans une chambre obscure. Bientôt nous serons hypnotisés.
Le show commence avec The Harbour, le premier extrait de leur album éponyme : une chanson puissante, qui donne parfaitement le ton de ce qu’on va entendre durant leur performance.
Son électro, cordes, synthés, étranges machines sonores, effets et batterie puissante envahissent la scène.
Des bruits sophistiqués sur Punch Drunk Sobre, Bask, Knife alternent avec des mélodies plus folk sur Silence in Between, Sun Gun ou Play the Part. Under the Ice – un très joli poème accompagné par de belles lignes de piano et de violon.
Très belles voix, la complicité de Mike et Sam est évidente et la performance de Chris Hamilton aux standing drums est époustouflante.
Le son est de plus en plus fort, le spectacle monte en puissance et la scène semble trop petite pour autant d’énergie. Le final est tout en dynamisme.
Ce son original et contemporain, nous porte décidément vers les paysages magiques d’Islande et dans les rues animées de Reykjavik, leur source d’inspiration pour écrire ce très bel album. Magnifique découverte.
