Pour terminer le maussade et le trop long mois de janvier, direction la petite salle intimiste les Étoiles à Paris où les Anglais de THE LUKA STATE nous avez donné RDV pour une bonne portion de Rock N’Roll made in UK.

A presque un an après la sortie de leur deuxième album More Than This, voilà enfin l’occasion de voir et écouter en live cet album que j’ai beaucoup aimé.

Leurs compatriotes de CARSICK montent sur scène en premier pour préparer le terrain. Un jeune groupe est visiblement amateur de sport (ils portent casquettes et des pulls rayés) et de surtout de bière (le groupe s’est formé dans un Pub et leur premier EP s’appelle Drunk Hymns).

Leur set est agréable et dynamique et peu importe que la salle soit un peu vide, le quatuor est bien décidé de nous convaincre avec leur punk rock énergique mélangé à des éléments hip hop et électro.

Le chant est presque rappé et la rythmique bien accrocheuse. Très communicatifs, le bassiste s’exerce à quelques phrases en français très appréciés par le public qui applaudi chaleureusement. Le chanteur fera un tour dans la fosse pour danser et chanter avec le gens. Très belle entrée dans la matière.

Après une petite pause, sur les accords mythiques de Rock The Casbah de The Clash, les membres de THE LUKA STATE : Conrad Ellis (chant, guitare), Sam Bell (basse, chant), Lewis Pusey (guitare) et Jake Barnabas (batterie) font leur apparition sur la petite scène sous les ovations du public déjà un plus nombreux.

Le groupe démarre son set avec une incroyable énergie brute qui serait maintenue durant tout le concert. Les premiers morceaux Bring Us Down et [Insert Girl’s Name Here] déclenchent un enthousiasme contagieux. Les pogoteurs sont déjà en place et sautent vigoureusement.

La setlist partagé entre les deux albums du groupe, Fall In Fall out et More Than This sera une véritable montagne russe. Le groupe passe sans transition du rock énergique et granuleux aux morceaux un peu plus calmes. Des hymnes féroces et révoltés, des mélodies pleines d’émotion, les chansons s’enchaînent avec efficacité.

Losing Streak, Stick Around, Two Worlds Apart, les textes poignants viennent directement du cœur et sont chantés avec beaucoup de passion par Conrad Ellis. Sa voix puissante et graveleuse résonne parfaitement dans la salle. Les riffs sont rugissants et les rythmiques entêtantes.

L’alchimie du groupe est évidente et l’interaction avec la salle permanente. Sam et Conrad demandent au public de chanter encore plus fort, de sauter et faire des cercles pits. La température monte de plus en plus dans la salle.

Après les très énergiques Room on Fire, What’s My Problem, il est temps d’allumer les torches de téléphones pour la très jolie et émouvante ballade Movies. Quelques couples s’embrassent. Ensuite, Feel It fera danser tout le monde.

Avant d’interpréter l’ultra dynamique Tightrope, le chanteur fera un petit discours sur l’importance de parler des problèmes de santé mentale et de la nécessité de la préserver en passant du temps avec les personnes qu’on aime.

L’interprétation frénétique de More Than This mettra les fans en délire.

Conrad fera monter sur scène un spectateur pour lui faire lire un bout de papier : « Achetez le vinyle s’il vous plaît, le prix est really bon ! » évidement grand moment de rigolade dans la salle. Ils vont clôturer le set avec le très énergique Liar, leur nouveau single sorti en début d’année.

Ils reviendront pour un rappel brulant avec Oxygen Thief et Bury Me. Le groupe est en sueur, mais il a encore beaucoup d’énergie à revendre. Et on peut dire la même chose pour les fans. Conrad descendra dans la fosse pour pogoter avec eux et il se filmera même en train de chanter sur un téléphone emprunté à quelqu’un. Il y aura un petit wall of death et du crowd surfing. Un final hyper réjouissant.

The LUKA STATE nous offre une soirée électrisante. Du Rock ‘N’Roll puissant, débridé et authentique en parfaite communion avec le public. Un show un peu court (un peu moins d’une 1h) mais intense et ardent de début à la fin !  British Rock attitude!

Ils seront prochainement en tournée au UK et on espère les revoir bientôt en France !

To end the gloomy and the too long month of January, let’s go to the small intimate venue Les Étoiles in Paris where the English band THE LUKA STATE gave us an appointment for a good portion of Rock N’Roll made in the UK.

Almost a year after the release of their second album, More Than This, here is finally the opportunity to see and listen live to this album that I really loved.

Their compatriots from CARSICK take the stage first. A young band obviously fond of sports (caps and striped polo shirts) and beer (their EP is called Drunk Hymns) and the band was formed in 2021 in a Pub.

Their set is pleasant and dynamic, and it doesn’t matter if the room is a bit empty, the quartet is determined to convince us with their energetic punk rock mixed with hip hop and electro elements.

The vocals are almost rapped and the rhythmic is catchy. Very communicative, the bass player practises a few phrases in French which are much appreciated by the audience who applaud warmly.

The singer will take a ride in the pit to dance and sing along with the people. Very nice introduction of the evening. 

After a short break, on the mythical chords of Rock The Casbah by The Clash, the members of THE LUKA STATE: Conrad Ellis (vocals, guitar), Sam Bell (bass, vocals), Lewis Pusey (guitar) and Jake Barnabas (drums) appeared on the small stage to the ovations of the already larger audience.

The band starts their set with an incredible raw energy that would be maintained throughout the concert. The first tracks Bring Us Down and Insert Girl’s Name Here sparked a contagious enthusiasm. The pogoers are already in place jumping vigorously.

The setlist shared between the band’s two albums Fall In Fall Out and More Than This will be a real rollercoaster. The band goes seamlessly from energetic and gritty rock to a little quieter song. Fierce and rebellious anthems, melodies full of emotion, the songs follow one another with efficiency.

Losing Streak, Stick Around, Two Worlds Apart, the poignant lyrics come straight from the heart and are sung with a lot of passion by Conrad Ellis. His powerful, gravelly voice resonates perfectly in the room. The riffs are roaring and the rhythms are intense.

The chemistry of the group is evident and the interaction with the fans is permanent. Sam and Conrad ask the audience to sing even louder, jump and do pit circles. The temperature is rising more and more.

After the very energetic Room on Fire and What’s My Problem, it’s time to light the phone torches for the very pretty and moving ballad, Movies. A few couples kiss. Then, Feel It will bring the rocking energy again and have everyone dancing. Before performing the ultra-dynamic and sweaty Tightrope, the singer will give a short speech about the importance of talking about mental health issues and the need to preserve it by spending time with the people we love. 

The frenetic rendition of More Than This will send fans into a frenzy mood. Conrad will bring an audience member up on stage to read a piece of paper in French « Achetez le vinyle s’il vous plaît, le prix est really bon ! (“Buy the vinyl please, the price is really good!”) Of course, there was a lot of laughter in the crowd.

They will close the set with the very energetic Liar, their new single released at the beginning of the year.

They’ll be back for a scorching encore with Oxygen Thief and Bury Me. No doubt, the band still has a lot of energy to spare. And the same can be said for the fans.

Conrad will go down into the pit to have fun with them, he will even film himself singing on someone’s borrowed phone. There will be a small wall of death and crowd surfing. A very joyful finale. 

The LUKA STATE offers us an electrifying evening. Powerful, unbridled and authentic Rock ‘N’ Roll in perfect communion with the audience. A show a bit short (a little less than 1 hour) but intense and ardent from start to finish!  British Rock attitude!

They will be touring UK staring with 15^th of February 2024 and hopefully we will have the chance to see them soon in France !
