Trois mois après la sortie de leur superbe album, Past Lives, le groupe american L.S.DUNES se produisait au Trabendo à Paris, le 2 février 2023.
Petit rappel pour ceux que ne les connaissent pas encore : L.S. DUNES est un supergroupe formé par Frank Iero (My Chemical Romance) – guitare, Travis Stever (Coheed and Cambria) – guitare, Anthony Green (Circa Survive) – chant, Tim Payne (Thursday) – basse, Tucker Rule (Thursday/Yellowcard) batterie, tous des musiciens talentueux et expérimentés qui connaissent déjà une grande popularité à travers leur groupes respectives.
Les cinq acolytes ont décidé donc de prendre le challenge de former un nouveau groupe, écrire des nouvelles chansons et prendre la route ensemble pour jouer dans des petites salles et se rapprocher ainsi d’un public constitué logiquement de super fans de 5 groupes phare du rock alternatif / post-hardcore mais aussi gagner de nouveaux fans grâce à ce projet. Et j’en fait partie de cette dernière catégorie car j’ai adoré cet album et j’avais hâte de l’écouter live.
Comme la plupart des dates de la tournée américaine et britannique ont été joués à guichet fermés, je m’attendais à un Trabendo bien rempli mais en arrivant je trouve plutôt le contraire. La fosse est à moitié remplie et la rampe qui joue en général de rôle de balcon est fermé.
La chanteuse, compositrice et multiinstrumentiste KAYLEIGH GOLDSWORTHY qui a eu la mission d’ouvrir ce soir, vient justement de terminer son dernier morceau et quitte la scène sous les ovations du public. Visiblement son set a connu un grand succès. Dommage que je l’aie raté.
Il faut savoir que la jeune musicienne qui accompagne L.S. DUNES sur cette tournée européenne a fait partie du groupe FRANK IERO AND THE FUTURE VIOLENTS, donc les fans les plus assidus la connaissaient forcement.
Un fois la salle allumée, on se rend compte que malgré le peu de monde, les fans devant la scène forment une foule compacte, une sorte de communautée très jeune, habillé en noir qui arborent des tatouages, des maquillages sombres et de cheveux colorés en rose ou bleu.
Et quand les membres de L.S. DUNES arrivent sur scène cette communauté bouillonnante est sur le point d’éclater. Le show démarre avec Bombsquad et l’énergie monte en flèche. Les cris sont forts et la sono est un peu chaotique, Une espèce de cacophonie règne dans la salle.
Le frénétique Like Forever fait monter l’énergie encore plus et le favori, Grey Veins enflamme les fans qui chantent le refrain avec passion sous les yeux émerveilles d’Antony Green. Le son est meilleur.
Évidement l’attention est plutôt dirigé vers le charismatique Antony Green. C’est sa voix incroyable et sa présence scénique qui ressortent le plus.
‘Fuckin’ God Damn’, s’exclame-t-il après chaque morceaux, souriant et conscient de charme qu’il dégage auprès de cette foule en ébullition qui boit ses paroles. Il semble assez surpris par cet accueil grandiose et ne manque pas de remercier après chaque morceau.
Chaque musicien sera mis en valeur pendant le show à travers des solos et à chaque intervention, la foule lui réservera un accueil chaleureux.
Le travail de guitare rebondissant et complexe de Stever se complète parfaitement avec les riffs rougissantes d’Iero. Les lignes de basse aiguisée de Payne se rajoutent admirablement aux frappes tonitruantes de Rule.
La scène est assez petite mais cela n’empêche pas les musiciens de se déplacer et de sauter dans tous le sens.
Past Live sera joué en intégralité, dans un ordre aléatoire. Les chansons sont plus brutes en live et chacun déclenche une réaction viscérale du public, les bras et les téléphones dans l’air. La plupart connaissent les paroles par cœur.
Notons l’immense réaction sur Permanent Rébellion, avec la foule criant passionnément chaque parole, encouragée par Green qui souvent dirige le micro vers le public.
Superbe moment avec It Takes Time où la voix parfois soul parfois aiguë du chanteur prend le contrôle du morceau. Grifter est l’un des morceaux les plus complets, la voix torturée et les magnifiques falsettos de Green se posent à merveille sur les riffs de guitare nostalgiques.
Le temps passe vite et on est déjà au rappel. 2 titres : l’urgent 2022 peutêtre le morceau le plus angoissé de l’album qui sonne encore plus brut en live et l’envoutant Sleep Cult qui clôture l’album également.
Pour Sleep Cult, Kayleigh Goldsworthy est invitée sur scène pour jouer au violon. La ballade bouleversante met en lumière la voix bluesy et obsédante d’Antony qui repete sans cesse : Sorry that I wish that I was dead. Et l’hypnotique refrain Shadoop-shooby-doos, shadoop-shooby-doo,Shadoop-shooby-doo chanté à l’unisson avec les fans.
Ce n’est pas souvent qu’un concert se termine avec une telle balade mélancolique. Mais c’était le bon choix après un set aussi débordant d’énergie.
Du début à la fin, L.S. DUNES a totalement capté l’attention du public enthousiaste et entièrement dévoué. Un équilibre parfait entre l’émotion brute et une énergie hyper intense.
Le groupe n’avait que onze chansons à nous présenter ce soir et ils les ont joués de tout cœur. Peu importe qu’ils n’aient pas une salle comble devant eux, les 5 musiciens se sont donnés à fond. Ils semblaient sincèrement apprécier l’accueil que les fans français leur ont réservé.
Une chose était claire – l’alchimie entre ces musiciens est indéniable. Quelque chose de spécial se passe quand ils jouent ensemble et on espère que le groupe continuera à nous offir d’autres concerts aussi magnifiques.

Three months after the release of their magnificent album, Past Lives, the American band, L.S.DUNES performed at the Trabendo in Paris, on February 2, 2023.
A little reminder for those who does not know them yet: L.S. DUNES is a supergroup formed by Frank Iero (My Chemical Romance) – guitar, Travis Stever (Coheed and Cambria) – guitar, Anthony Green (Circa Survive) – vocals, Tim Payne (Thursday) – bass, Tucker Rule (Thursday/Yellowcard) – drums, all talented and experienced musicians who already have great popularity through their respective bands.
The five musicians decided to take the challenge of forming a new band, write new songs and take the road together to play in small venues and thus get closer to an audience logically made up of super fans of 5 flagship bands of alternative rock / post-hardcore but also to gain new fans thanks to this project. Myself, I’m part of the latter category and I couldn’t wait to listen to this album live.
As most of the dates of the US and UK tour were sold out, I was expecting a full Trabendo but when I arrived, I find the opposite. The pit is half filled and the small balcony is closed.
The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist KAYLEIGH GOLDSWORTHY had the mission to open the evening, has just finished her last song and leaves the stage under the big audience ovations. Obviously, her set was a great success. Too bad I missed it.
You should know that the young musician who accompanies L.S. DUNES on this European tour was part of the band FRANK IERO AND THE FUTURE VIOLENTS, so the most assiduous fans necessarily knew her.
Once the room is lit, we realize that despite few people, the fans in front of the stage form a compact crowd, a kind of very young community, dressed in black wearing tattoos, dark makeup and hair colored pink or blue.
And when the members of L.S. DUNES arrive on stage this bubbling community is about to erupt. The show kicks off with Bombsquad and the energy skyrockets. The screams are loud and the sound system is a little chaotic, A kind of cacophony reigns in the room.
The frenetic Like Forever raises the energy even more and the favorite, Grey Veins ignites fans who sing the chorus passionately under the amazed eyes of Antony Green. The sound is better. It is impossible to approach the stage to take pictures. The crowd is too packed.
Obviously, everyone attention is rather directed towards the charismatic Antony Green. It is his incredible voice and stage presence that stand out the most. “Fuckin’ God Damn,” he exclaims after each song, smiling and aware of the charm he exudes from the boiling crowd that “drinks” his words.
He seems quite surprised by this grandiose welcome and does not fail to thank everyone for coming after each song. But each musician will be highlighted during the show through solos and at each intervention the crowd will give him a warm welcome.
Stever’s bouncing and complex guitar work complements perfectly with Iero’s blushing riffs. Payne’s sharp bass lines add beautifully to Rule’s thunderous strikes.
The stage is quite small but that does not prevent the musicians from moving and jumping in all directions.
Past Live will be played in full, in random order. The songs sound rawer live and each one triggers a visceral reaction from the audience, arms and phones in the air. Most know the all lyrics by heart. Note the immense reaction on the awesome Permanent Rebellion, with the crowd passionately shouting every word, encouraged by Green who often directs the microphone towards the audience.
Superb moment with It Takes Time where the incredible Green’s high voice takes control of the song. Grifter is one of the most complete tracks, Green’s tortured voice and beautiful falsettos land perfectly on nostalgic guitar riffs.
Time flies and we are already at the Encore. 2 tracks: the infectious 2022, maybe the most anxious and hardcore of the album that sounds even more raw live and the captivating Sleep Cult that ends the album as well.
For Sleep Cult, Kayleigh Goldsworthy was invited on stage to play violin. A moving ballad that highlights the bluesy and haunting voice of Antony who obsessively apologize for wishing he was dead: Sorry that I wish that I was dead. And the hypnotic chorus Shadoop-shooby-doos, shadoop-shooby-doo, Shadoop-shooby-doo big singalong with the fans.
It’s not often that a concert ends with such a melancholic ballad. But it was the right choice after such an energetic set.
From start to finish, L.S. DUNES totally captured the attention of the enthusiastic and dedicated audience. A perfect balance between raw emotion and intense energy.
For sure, the band only had eleven songs to present to us tonight and they played them wholeheartedly. It doesn’t matter if they don’t have a full venue in front of them, the 5 musicians gave it their all. They seemed to sincerely appreciate the welcome they received from the French fans.
One thing was clear – the chemistry between these musicians is undeniable. Something special happens when they play together and we hope that the band will continue to offer us such great concerts.
