Fabulous Evening with VOLBEAT & Guests :BAD WOLVES and SKINDRED, Paris 31.10.22 – Live Review

En ce lundi pluvieux de 31.10.2022, on avait le choix d’enfiler notre plus beau costume d’Halloween et aller chercher de bonbons ou aller voir VOLBEAT et leurs invités, BAD WOLVES et SKINDRED au Zenith de Paris. Le choix fut facile.

BAD WOLVES démarre à 19 h devant un Zenith en format réduit et assez clairsemé. Bizarre, est-ce que c’est trop tôt pour les Parisiens ou beaucoup de monde a choisi de faire le traditionnel pont du 1^er Novembre ?

Bref, les « méchants loups » ne se laissent pas déstabilisées par public pas très nombreux dans la salle et enchaînent les titres. Ce soir, ils sont venus présenter leur dernier album, Dear Monsters, sorti en novembre 2021.

Le show est énergique, les musiciens sont en forme et font le maximum pour chauffer le public. Le nouveau frontman “DL”Daniel Laskiewicz, se produit pour la première fois en France. Il est très dynamique et communicatif et profite largement de l’avancée imposante de la scène qui dépasse le milieu de la salle, pour s’approcher plus près de public. Le guitariste Max Karon, très souriant, descendra même dans la fosse pour jouer quelques riffs.

Malheureusement, le son n’est pas à la hauteur et ne met pas bien en valeur le groove de leur métal de qualité. Les américains interpréteront 7 chansons et l’ambiance deviendra plus chaude vers la fin, notamment avec la reprise de Zombie (Cranberries) et le puissant, I’ll be there.

Petite pause et c’est le tour des musiciens de SKINDRED de monter sur scène en rythme de la Marche Impériale de STAR WARS. SKINDRED est un groupe gallois de fusion reggae/ragga – metal, electro, originaire de New Port avec 7 albums à leur actif. Un groupe que je n’ai jamais vu auparavant et qui m’a totalement conquise.

Le public n’est toujours pas très fourni mais Benji Webbe, le charismatique frontman, va mettre tout le monde à ses pieds.

Farceur, Benji arrive sur scène en faisant semblent de ne pas pouvoir marcher, soutenu par le bassiste Dan Pugsley, pour ensuite se montrer en forme olympique. Il se déplace en long et en large de la scène et échange en permanence avec les spectateurs qui semblent en fin se réveiller : ils sautent, chantent et balance les bras en l’air sur les instructions de Benji qui se montre très exigent sur la réaction du public.

Il déclenche un duel vocal entre les partis droite et gauche de la scène, il joue une petite intro du Jump de Van Halen sur un mini clavier portable, Benji est un showman absolument phénoménal qui dégage une ambiance chaleureuse et des positive vibes.

Si jamais il n’y a pas assez de bruit, il en redemande encore. Les moments culminants de la soirée les méga énergiques, sans aucun doute : That’s my Jam ou Kill The Power quand le frontman prend le contrôle la foule et fait bouger tout le monde.

Skindred sortira un nouvel album, intitulé Smile, en 2023, et ce soir ils interpréteront en avant-première, le premier single Gimme That Boom.

Une excellente performance live, une énergie communicative au top, couronné par les « hélicoptères », apparemment un moment clé et incontournable, dans de leur performance live quand le chanteur demande d’enlever les T-shirts et les faire tourner au-dessous de sa tête.

Les autres musiciens bien que moins expansifs, sont excellents aussi. Notamment le guitariste barbu Michael Mikeydemus Fry qui prend de poses tout en déversant ses riffs ou Arya Goggin qui se défonce derrière à la batterie. SKINDRED livrent ce soir un show fantastique, en faisant participer tout le monde.

Quelle énergie ! Quel enthousiasme ! Skindred est une expérience live incroyable, et l’interaction de Benji avec la foule est fantastique. On aurait pu croire que ces sont headliners ce soir ! Si vous avez l’occasion de les voir, allez -y !

Après une telle prestation, on se demande bien comment VOLBEAT va prendre le relais.

C’est sous les grands ovations du public, beaucoup plus nombreux maintenant, que Michael Poulsen (Chant, Guitare), Jon Larsen (batterie), Rob Caggiano (guitare) et Kaspar Boye Larsen (basse) entrent sur scène.

Le set démarre en trombe avec The Devil’s Bleeding Crown et les jets de fumée font déjà leur apparition. Il ne faut pas plus pour que le public s’enflamme. Pelvis On Fire. Temple Of Ekur et Lola Montez feront monter l’ambiance un peu plus.

La scène est impressionnante. La batterie surélevée est entourée de téléviseurs vintages empilées. Un mur d’écrans géants derrières passe en direct les images du groupe, du public, des photos, des dessins animés. Les visuels, les lumières et la sono claire et puissante sont tous simplement parfaits. Du grand spectacle !

Les danois semblent très à l’aise sur la grande scène et se baladent dans les quatre coins, tout en jouant à la perfection de leurs instruments.

Le frontman tout sourires, Michael Poulsen, visiblement content d’être là, interagit souvent avec le public, bras et cornes dans l’air. Il exprime sa joie et remercie le public d’être venus les voir.

Grands sourires du côté de Rob Caggiano aussi, chevelure impressionnante et remarquable facilité dans sa façon de jouer à la guitare.

Pour le set list, la priorité est donnée bien évidement au dernier album, Servant of the Mind, sorti en 2021, avec 6 titres.

Mention spéciale pour la performance de Shotgun Blues qui va me hanter plusieurs jours. Excellentes aussi Seal the Deal et The Devil Rages, pour cette dernière le chanteur fera référence « au diable qui réside actuellement en Russie »

L’enchaînement de la cover de Johnny Cash, Ring of fire et leur morceau, Sad man’s tongue, justement inspire par la légende de la country, sera accueilli avec le grand enthousiasme du public. Sans oublier, I Only Wanna Be With You, la cover de Dusty Springfield, accompagnée également par une jolie participation du public.

A 2 reprises, il y a aura l’intervention sur scène du duo très fun, ZZ BOTTOM (Zak au piano et Zik au saxophone), pour un coté boogie-woogie très sympa de la soirée. Le très dansant, Wait a minute girl, sera accompagné par un lâcher de ballons dans le public.

Ils reviendront pour un rappel de 4 titres, dont les incontournables For Evygt et unificateur, Still Counting accompagné par des confetti et bandelette tricolores.

VOLBEAT confirme ce soir son excellente réputation live avec un show énergique, sans aucun temps mort. VOLBEAT est incontestablement l’un de ces groupes qui accorde énormément d’attention à la qualité sonore et aux visuels impressionnants.

Des musiciens fantastiques et parfaitement synchronisés, une prestation vocale forte et limpide, des riffs riches et enflammés, une rythmique triomphante. Une parfaite combinaison de heavy metal et de rockabilly dans une ambiance festive que la foule rayonnante a chaleureusement appréciée.

C’était la première fois que je voyais VOLBEAT et je dois dire que j’ai été très impressionné.

Dans cette soirée d’Halloween, on a assisté à une fantastique soirée hard rock – heavy metal à Paris. VOLBEAT, SKINDRED et BAD WOLVES ont fait magistralement leur boulot dans une ambiance électrique.

On this rainy Monday of 31.10.2022, we had the choice to put on our best Halloween costume and go get candies or go see VOLBEAT and their guests, BAD WOLVES and SKINDRED at the Zenith in Paris. The choice was easy.

BAD WOLVES starts at 7 p.m. in front of a Zenith in reduced capacity form and quite sparse. Strange, is it too early for Parisians or rather many people make traditional 1^st of November bridge?

Anyway, the “bad wolves” do not seem destabilized by the small audience in the room. Tonight, they came to present their latest album, Dear Monsters, released in November 2021.

The show is energetic, the musicians are in shape and do their best to warm up the audience. The new frontman “DL”Daniel Laskiewicz, performs for the first time in France. He is very dynamic and communicative and takes advantage of the imposing long stage that goes beyond the middle of the room, to get closer to the public.

The guitarist Max Karon, very smiling, will even go down into the pit to play in the middle of the audience. Unfortunately, the sound is quite bad and does not highlight the groove of their quality metal. The Americans will perform 7 songs and the atmosphere will become warmer towards the end, especially with the cover of Zombie (Cranberries) and the powerful, I’ll be there.

A short break and it’s the turn of the musicians of SKINDRED to go on stage on the Imperial March of STAR WARS. SKINDRED is a Welsh reggae/ragga fusion band – metal, electro, from New Port, that already released 7 albums. A band that I have never seen before and that totally conquered me tonight.

The audience is still not big but Benji Webbe, the charismatic frontman, will put everyone to his feet.

A prankster, Benji arrives on stage pretending not to be able to walk, supported by bassist Dan Pugsley, but actually he is in Olympic shape. He moves up and down the stage and constantly exchanges with the audience who finally woke up: they jump, sing and swing their arms in the air following the instructions of Benji who is very demanding on the reaction of the audience.

He triggers a vocal duel between the right and left parties of the stage, he plays a small intro of Van Halen’s Jump on a mini portable keyboard, Benji is an absolutely phenomenal showman who exudes a warm atmosphere and positive vibes. If ever there is not enough noise, he asks for more. The highlights of the evening will be the mega energetic That’s my Jam and Kill The Power when the frontman takes control of the crowd and gets everyone moving.

Skindred will release a new album, titled Smile, in 2023, and tonight they will premiere the first single Gimme That Boom.

An excellent live performance, a communicative energy at the top, crowned by the “helicopters”, apparently a key moment, unavoidable in their live performance when the singer asks to remove the shirts and spin them under his head.

The other musicians, although less expansive, are excellent too. Notably the bearded guitarist Michael Mikeydemus Fry who poses while pouring out his riffs or Arya Goggin who gets mad behind his drums. SKINDRED delivers a fantastic show tonight, involving everyone. What an energy! What enthusiasm! Skindred is definitely an amazing live experience, and Benji’s interaction with the crowd is fantastic. You would have thought that they are headliners tonight! If you have the opportunity to see them, go for it!

After such a performance, we wonder how VOLBEAT will take over. It is under the great ovations of the audience, much more numerous now, that Michael Poulsen (Vocals, Guitar), Jon Larsen (drums), Rob Caggiano (guitar) and Kaspar Boye Larsen (bass) arrive on the stage.

The set starts with The Devil’s Bleeding Crown and the smoke jets are already activated. It doesn’t take more for the audience to get fired up. Pelvis On Fire, Temple Of Ekur and Lola Montez will raise the mood even more.

The stage is impressive. The raised battery is surrounded by stacked vintage TVs. The giant screen wall behind play live images of the band, the audience, photos and cartoons. The visuals, the lights and the clear and powerful sound system are all just perfect. A great show!

The Danes seem very comfortable on the big stage and wander around while playing their instruments to perfection. The smiling frontman, Michael Poulsen, visibly happy to be there, often interacts with the audience, arms and horns in the air.

He expresses his joy and thanks the public for coming to see them. Big smiles on Rob Caggiano’s face too, impressive hair and remarkable ease in his way of playing the guitar.

For the set list, the priority is obviously given to the latest album, Servant of the Mind, released in 2021, with 6 tracks. Special mention for the performance of Shotgun Blues that will haunt me for several days. Excellent also Seal the Deal and The Devil Rages, for the latter the singer will refer to “the devil who currently lives in Russia”.

The sequence with of Johnny Cash’s, Ring of fire and their song, Sad man’s tongue, inspired by the legend of country, will trigger the great enthusiasm of the public. Not to mention, I Only want to Be With You, the cover of Dusty Springfield, which is also accompanied by a nice participation of the public.

There will be also 2 interventions on stage of the very fun duo, ZZ BOTTOM (Zak on piano and Zik on saxophone), for a nice boogie-woogie portion. The very danceable, Wait a minute girl, will be accompanied by a release of balloons in the audience.

They will return for an encore of 4 titles, including the essential For Evygt and unifying, Still Counting accompanied by confetti and tricolour strips.

VOLBEAT confirms tonight in Paris, its excellent live reputation with an energetic and fierce show, without any downtime in a festive atmosphere warmly welcomed by the fans. VOLBEAT is undoubtedly one of those bands that pays a lot of attention to the sound quality and visuals of their performance. Fantastic and perfectly synchronized musicians, a strong and clear vocal performance, rich and fiery riffs, a triumphant rhythm section.

A perfect combination of heavy metal and rockabilly that the radiant crowd clearly appreciated. It was the first time I saw Volbeat and I have to say I was very impressed.

Tonight, we attended a fantastic hard rock – heavy metal evening. VOLBEAT, SKINDRED and BAD WOLVES did their job masterfully in a positive and festive atmosphere.
