7 jours de concerts, 362 concerts, 420000 spectateurs, HELLFEST (Clisson, Loire -Atlantique, France) a battu tous les records en 2022.
Après deux éditions consécutives reportées à cause de la pandémie de Covid-19, Hellfest a donc doublé la mise et les organisateurs nous ont offert une 15 édition anniversaire gigantesque qui a dépassé tous nos attentes.
Une édition historique clôturée avec un concert anthologique de Metallica qui de produisait pour la première fois sur les terres de Clisson.
Avec un line up d’enfer, il y a eu du métal pour tous les goûts : heavy, death, black, black epic ou baroque, occulte, trash, nu, industriel et mais aussi du rock, du hard rock, du blues et même du folk.
Et 2 feux d’artifices spectaculaires.
MAINSTAGE 1, MAINSTAGE 2, WARZONE, ALTAR, VALLEY, TEMPLE… on a parcouru de kilomètres entre les 6 scènes de festival (sans oublier les aller-retour parking – navette – festival).
On a marché sous le soleil brulant, sous la pluie, dans la boue ou dans le gravier. Mais on l’a fait ! Avec la joie et la bonne humeur de retrouver nos bonnes habitudes d’il y a 3 ans.
Les plus chanceux (et courageux) ont fait les 2 weekend et entre les deux, ils ont profité pour visiter la région : la Loire Atlantique avec ses vignoble verdoyantes et ses beaux sentiers côtiers.
Ici, à Rock Art Fashion, on a fait 5 sur 7 jours de festival : le 19 juin, puis du 23 au 26 juin et on a profité au maximum. On a vu de grands noms de la scène rock métal, on a vu nos préférés et on a aussi fait de belles découvertes.
On a sillonné les allées ombragées, on a retrouvé avec plaisir les fontaines, les arbres, les bars container en fer qui crache du feu et surtout, on a admiré les nouvelles sculptures gigantesques – notamment l’imposante statue de Lemmy Kilmister (12 m de hauteur, 5 tonnes d’acier) et celle monumentale du corbeau.
On a testé les cuisines : argentine, alsacienne, savoyarde etc. Et on a surtout vu des grands sourires, des gens heureux de faire la fête, chanter, danser, se réjouir, slamer… oublier l’isolement, la distanciation et revivre comme avant. Ça fait du bien.
On a vu de costumes, des déguisements, de masques (pas chirurgicales ou FFP2), les T- Shirt Hellfest de tous les éditions, ou ceux à l’effigie de leur groupe préféré et on a vu les queues interminables à la boutique de souvenirs. Les imprimées cranes, croix, des messages de toute sortent, les beaux tatouages et les jolis maquillages affluait devant les scènes.
Comme chaque année, les festivaliers sont de plus en plus créatifs. On le sait à HELLFEST, on peut s’habiller comme on veut sans craindre les commentaires déplacés. Tout le monde est super cool.
La météo a été assez capricieuse entre la grande canicule du premier weekend et la pluie du deuxième, cette année, il ne fallait surtout pas oublier les gourdes d’eau, les chapeaux, les casquettes, les bandanas et les crèmes solaires et mais aussi les sweaters et les ponchos de pluie.

Echappés de près de la grande canicule, on fait la connaissance avec le nouveau parking, la navette et évidemment on arrive plus tard que prévu…
BORKNAGAR (Temple)
BORKNAGAR est un groupe de métal progressif norvégien, originaire de Bergen. On s’attend donc à un voyage à travers les vastes paysages enneigés de la Norvège. Le show est speed et apporte des nombreux changements de rythme. Les guitares puissantes sont accompagnées par des claviers retro et les chants clairs alternent avec des chats growl d’une efficacité redoutable. On navigue entre ambiances brutales black métal, et celles folk, progressive très mélodiques et accrocheuses.
Up North est très entraînant, l’atmosphérique Voices déclenche des tonnerres d’applaudissements. Un show très réussi et une belle découverte pour ma part.
DOWN (Mainstage 2)
Phil Anselmo est un habituel du festival et cette année c’est avec son groupe DOWN qu’il est venu déverser sa voix rocailleuse. Le combo de la Nouvelle-Orléans délivre un set stoner – sluge – métal de très bonne qualité. Les musiciens sont en grande forme et visiblement très heureux d’être là.
Les guitaristes Kirk Windstein, Pepper Keenan et le bassiste Patrick Bruders secouent énergiquement leur chevelures (ou longue barbes …) tout en s’échangeant leurs places sur la scène.
Anselmo interagit en permanence avec la foule. Il exprime sa joie d’être là et remercie le public et Hellfest des nombreuses fois.
Le son est très fort, la voix est assez bien maitrisée, les riffs sont tranchants et la rythmique lourde. Le groove du concert plait aux headbangers venus nombreux se défouler devant la Mainstage 2.
Depuis sa formation, Down a sorti trois albums studio et 2 EP, c’est pourtant sur le premier album, NOLA, que le groupe met en avant ce soir.
JUDAS PRIEST (Mainstage 2)
Judas Priest fête ses 50 ans avec un show superbe. Un set list à la hauteur, façon best of 50 years avec les incontournables You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’, Painkiller, Turbo Lover, Hell Bent For Leather (avec la légendaire arrivée de Rob Halford en Harley sur scène), Breaking The Law ou Living After Midnight.
Un Rob Halford époustouflant. Même si de fois, il semble un peu fatigué, Il n’a absolument rien perdu de ses capacités vocales impressionnantes au point qu’on se demande s’il n’y a pas une astuce technologique quelque part. A quoi on rajoute évidement ses tenues vestimentaires spectaculaires : les vestes cloutées en cuir, les manteaux en jean.
Richie Faulkner et Andy Sneap impeccables à la guitare ainsi que Ian Hill et Scott Travis à la section rythmique. Le public était évidemment de la partie avec des circle pits et des grandes ovations. Avec 50 ans de carrière on a peur des adieux, mais le message de la fin nous rassure « The Priest will be back »
GOJIRA (Mainstage 1)
Une foule immense pour le show de Gojira. Véritable machine de guerre, le groupe français se déchaine. Le son est gigantesque et les visuels spectaculaires.
CORONER (Altar)
Coroner joue quasiment ne même temps que Gojira, donc je quitte la Mainstage 1 pour voir un peu le show de suisses. Le public est quand même assez nombreux sur la tente d’Altar. Le show est un peu statique mais le son est excellent. Le trio suisse mené par le front man Ron Royce est en grande forme. Les riffs impitoyables, les sonorités brutes, les titres s’enchaînent au grand plaisir des headbangers pas encore fatigués.

PHIL CAMPBELL & THE BASTARDS SONS (Mainstage 1)
Le groupe que l’ancien guitarise de Motörhead, Phil Campbell, forme avec ses trois fils interprète en ce début d’après – midi un set constitué entièrement de reprises de Motörhead. Sans doute pour rendre hommage au grand Lemmy Kilmister. En effet, le légendaire musicien sera honoré tard dans la nuit avec une cérémonie prévue autour de sa nouvelle statue monumentale, en présence de ses acolytes Phil Campbell & Mikkey Dee. Ça fait plaisir d’entendre des grands classiques comme Killed By Death, Ace Of Spades ou Overkill, mais on aurait bien aimé découvrir quelques chansons de son répertoire original.
Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown (Mainstage 2)
Blues Rock N’Roll de grande qualité, grands sourires, jeu des scène, riffs tranchants, Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown nous offre un show énergique. Visiblement ravi d’être- là, le front man accompagné par sa guitare rose préférée (Pinky) se lâche dans des solos ravageurs, des headbanging et court de droite à gauche de la scène.
Dans la set list, leur Hits, On to the next, House on Fire mais aussi l’excellente Mojo Workin’ (la reprise de Muddy Waters).
Thunder ( Mainstage 1)
Des riffs vertigineux, un chant hard rock puissant, les icônes du classic rock britannique Thunder délivre un show carré devant une parterre de fans bien contents. Leur nouvel album sera présent avec un seul extrait The Western Sky. Les reste de set sera constitué des morceaux plus connus dans leur catalogues comme Last One Out Turn Off The Lights, The Devil Made Me Do It, Backstreet Symphony. Le chanteur Danny Bowes maintien la foule engagée, le groupe et l’audience passent un très bon moment.
The Last Internationale (Mainstage 2)
Sur le Mainstage 2, le duo new yorkaisformé parDelila Paz (chant, basse, piano) et Edgey Pires (guitare), nous pulvérisent avec un show ultra énergique. Hélas trop court !!!
La charismatique chanteuse à la voix hallucinante et le guitariste aux riffs énervés sont accompagnés sur scène par 3 membres du groupe Français, Shaka Ponk (Ion à la Batterie, Mandris à la basse et Steve, aux claviers)
L’excellent Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Indian Blood, suivi par l’incendiaire Hit ‘Em With Your Blues, Delila et Edgey sont des véritables boules d’énergie sur scène.
Pour l’excellent Wanted Man, Delila attrape la basse et encourage le public à la joindre pour chanter et taper dans les mains. Moment culminant avec la magnifique chanson, Soul on Fire, quand la chanteuse se fera porter par la foule subjuguée.
Du rock classique avec des racines folk et blues, des textes révolutionnaires et engagés posés sur des riffs puissance maximale et une voix soul passionnée, le duo capte la foule avec son énergie brute et un charme implacable.
Le show se terminera avec une extraordinaire reprise de Oh, Freedom (Odetta). Grandes ovations du public !
Tribulation (Altar)
Je ne connais pas du tout le groupe suédois sinon la bio fournie par le festival qui les présente comme comme le groupe « qui a gravi les échelons à la vitesse grand V ». C’est plutôt une belle surprise. Death metal mélodique et avec une voix sépulcrale posé sur des grands riffs heavy classiques addictifs. Le groove est accrocheur et efficace. Dommage que le groupe évolue dans un grand brouillard, pas facile de capter leurs visages expressifs peints en noir et blanc.
En allant vers Whitesnake on passe par Temple – où une foule immense regarde le groupe suisse ZEAL & ARDOR, preuve que le talentueux Manuel Gagneux et sa bande se sont fait une réputation et leur mélange expérimental a gagné beaucoup de fans. Bravo à eux !
Whitesnake (Mainstage 1)
C’est le Farewell Tour pour le groupe mythique WHITESNAKE et effectivement le front man David Coverdale très ému, nous annonce sa présence pour la dernière fois au festival. Le grand blond charismatique à la voix magnifique et sa bande enchaînent hit après hit. Mega plaisir d’écouter live pour une dernière fois les hymnes hard rock : Bad Boys, Give Me All Your Love, Is This Love ou Here I go again. Pour terminer toute en beauté avec Still of the Night rejoint pour par un invité de marque : le grand Steve Vai qui s’est produit sur la Mainstage 2 juste avant.
Mention spéciale pour l’incroyable batteur Tommy Aldridge. Son solo nous laisse pratiquement sans voix. Après avoir présenté toute sa bande, Coverdale nous fais ses adieux et lance “Be safe, be happy, and don’t let anybody make you be afraid “. On espère qu’ils changeront d’avis.
Helloween (Mainstage 2)
Un grand plaisir aussi de trouver sur la Mainstage 2, Helloween, les vétérans allemands du speed/power metal. Encore plus de découvrir une setlist tournée vers les premiers albums. Fan de la première heure, c’est pourtant la première fois quand je vois les citrouilles live. Le show est super énergique. Jeu de scène, solos endiablés, le duo voix Michael Kiske / Kai Hansen fonctionne très bien.
Les hymnes Metal Invaders / Victim of Fate/ Gorgar / Ride the Sky/ Heavy Metal is the Law extraits de Walls of Jericho font grand effet. C’est du grand spectacle. Le public est au rendez-vous et accueille avec grande enthousiasme la formation allemande au top ce soir.
Ils seront de retour en France à Paris le 30 aout à l’Olympia et le 31 aout à Lyon.

Dirty Shirt & Transylvanian Folklore Orchestra (Temple)
On commence la journée avec la grande fête que Dirty Shirt & Transylvanian Folklore Orchestra nous propose sous la tente de Temple.
Le groupe roumain se produit pour la première fois à Hellfest et visiblement, ils sont fermement décidés de nous montrer de quoi ils ont capables : une symbiose exceptionnelle entre le métal puissant et la musique traditionnelle roumaine, une énorme énergie, une joie de vivre débordante et une générosité sans limite.
Sur la scène de Temple 19 musiciens : les 8 membres permanents du groupe accompagnés par 3 choristes et 8 musiciens traditionnels (violons, flûtes, violoncelles, trompettes). Les riffs metalcore se mêlent aux violons à quoi se rajoutent des percussions cadencées, les synthés et plein d’autres sons différents : flûtes, trompettes, violoncelle. Des chansons sont terriblement efficaces qui plaisent énormément au public.
L’ambiance est à la grande fête et la bonne humeur sur la scène mais dans le public aussi. Les chanteurs Dan “Rini” Craciun, voix claire et androgyne et Robert Ruz, voix grave et hurlé alternent leurs passages et ils interagissent en permanence avec la foule et les encouragent de chanter et danser avec eux.
Leur dernier album « Get Your Dose Now » est présent en grand partie dans le set list avec Dope-A – Min, Hot for Summer, Pretty Faces. Notons l’excellent Geamparalele avec les voix féminines qui se démarquent. Les choristes, excellentes tout au long du concert, dansent et chantent avec frénésie.
Avalanche d’émotions pour un public conquis, complément en délire qui profite au maximum de l’ambiance chaleureuse en parfaite communion avec les musiciens sur scène.
Grandes ovations et crowd surfing de choristes en fin de show. L’audience ne s’attendait probablement pas de voir un concert si épique en ce début d’après-midi.
Dimanche 26 juin, on a rencontré le fondateur du groupe, Mihai Tivadar ainsi que les 3 adorable choristes Tea, Miruna et Alexa. On vous dira plus bientôt.
Ihsahn (Temple)
Coup de cœur pour le norvégien Ihsahn, figure emblématique de la scène black métal qui ce soir nous présentera un show varié avec quelques-uns de ses meilleurs morceaux comme Stridig ou Telemark et aussi quelques reprises très réussis Rock And Roll Is Dead de Lenny Kravitz et Wrathchild d’Iron Maiden. Une voix unique et des riffs impeccables.
Kreator ( Mainstage 2)
Kreator garde fièrement sa réputation. Sous une pluie embêtante, les légendes du trash métal allemand délivre un show excellent. Le groupe mené par le talentueux Mille Petrozza depuis 40 ans est au sommet de sa forme. Le show est millimétré : la cadence est infernale, les riffs tranchants et la voix aigüe, en colère. Sur la scène des « cadavres » pendues et empalés, des flammes, etmêmeles confettis la fin du set.
Petrozza demande plus d’enthousiasme à la foule qui se met illico à faire de circle pit malgré la pluie de plus en plus forte. Le nouveaux bassiste français Frédéric Leclercq exprime sa joie de jouer avec Kreator pour la première fois à Hellfest. Actuellement en tournée pour la promo du nouvel album Hate Über Alles, le groupe interprétera en première Strongest of the Strong ainsi que le morceau éponyme et mais aussi les grands classiques comme People of the Lie ou Flag Of Hate.
MINISTRY ( Mainstage 1)
Quand MINISTRY arrive sur scène, la pluie est déjà très forte. L’entrée des américains se fait sur l’hymne de Ukraine avec l’affichage du drapeau sur les écrans, accompagné par le message « Ministry stands with Ukarine »
Al Jourgensen et ses acolytes démarrent en force avec l’époustouflant Breathe suivi de près par The Missing. Le show et de plus un plus puissant. Les vétérans du métal indu sont en forme olympique.
L’énergie du groupe est incroyable, les son excellent. L’écran derrière diffuse des images hallucinantes. Les fans semblent oublier qu’ils sont déjà mouillés jusqu’aux os et réagissent avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme.
De mon côté je me retire juste après Supernaut, la reprise de Black Sabbath, car moi et mon appareil photo ne sommes plus en mesure de résister au déluge infernal qui s’abat sur Hellfest.

SLIFT (Valley)
Alors que le site s’est partiellement transformé en marécage, on arrive trop tard pour voir Ayron Jones mais suffisamment tôt pour se faufiler entre 2 averses et 12453 flaques d’eaux à Valley ou le trio Toulousain SLIFT met le feu avec leur Stoner psychédélique très énervé.
Le groupe français a sorti son deuxième album Ummon en février 2020, donc évidemment pas possible de le défendre sur scène, mais là, ils sont en train de prendre leur revanche avec un show d’une puissance remarquable. Déferlante des guitares fuzz, incroyable mix d’énergie garage rock et des passages psychédéliques, le groupe met KO le public venu très nombreux.
Arcturus (Temple)
La troupe norvégienne de black metal avant-gardiste se produit sous la tente d’Altar. Le son est complexe et nous balade entre la brutalité du black métal et des expérimentations rock, progressif et même symphonique. Il y a des guitares énergiques, des claviers et le chant hurlé ou clair. Les musiciens, ils ont l’air tous échappés de l’hôpital psychiatrique. Notamment le chanteur, ICS Vortex drapé justement d’une camisole de force et des lunettes d’aviateur, interprète un personnage visiblement lunatique ou ivre ou bien complètent fou. Pas mal!
Epica (Mainstage 2)
Le métal symphonique d’Epica nous enchante. Le duo voix – la charmante mezzo-soprane Simone Simons et le guitariste / chanteur Mark Janssen fonctionne à merveille. Jeu de scène complices, envolées symphoniques contrastent avec le growls énergiques, les riffs efficaces, claviers de tous sortes : portables ou sur rails, à quoi on rajoute les jets des flammes, des serpents en métal gigantesques sur scène, le groupe néerlandais offre une excellente performance.
Set list avec un beau mélange de leurs albums, dont 2 morceaux d’Omenga, le dernier en date et le flamboyant Abyss of Time – Countdown to Singularity. 20 ans d’expérience, ça se voit !
Draconian (Altar)
Une petite portion de doom death gothique avec les suédois de Draconian. Le growl puissant équilibré par les chants clairs féminines crée un bel effet.
A noter que le groupe se produit avec 2 chanteuses qui alternent les titres : la brune Heike Langhans, chanteuse depuis 2012, qui passe le flambeau à la blonde, Lisa Johansson, de retour dans le groupe après une vingtaine d’années. Jolie performance.
Myrkur (Temple)
Du folk nordique chanté en danois, Myrkur et sa voix angélique nous transporte de l’Enfer droit au Paradis. C’est un véritable voyage dans les landes scandinaves verdoyantes ou enneigés (il ya des plantes vertes sur la scène mais aussi du brouillard) et une petite pause pour nos pauvres tympans soumis à une rude épreuve. Accompagnée par plusieurs choristes, des instruments à cordes : violon, violoncelle, un synthé (notons l’absence de guitares) la musicienne délivre un moment de douceur et d’intimité que beaucoup ont largement apprécié, vue les cris et les applaudissements entre chaque morceau.
GUNS N’ROSES (Mainstage1)
Attention, si vous voulez lire de méchancetés sur le concert de Guns, passez à la chronique suivante. En tout le cas, tout le monde s’attendait au pire. Pourtant, il était quasiment impossible de s’approcher de la scène déjà depuis le concert d’Airbourne à 19h.
Slash, Duff et Axl réunis sur scène après 25 ans, c’est un grand événement (même la ministre de la culture a fait le déplacement) surtout pour ceux qui n’ont pas eu la chance de les voir sur scène à époque Appetite for Destruction et Use Your Ilusions (moi, par example)
Certes, Axl n’a plus la même voix. Il démarre assez mal mais après un temps de chauffe, ça va mieux. En plus, ça se voie ! il fait des efforts et se lâche de plus en plus. Il est en assez bonne forme physique. Et les Guns ce n’est PAS que la voix d’Axl, mais aussi les riffs de Slash, parfaits ce soir, ou la puissance de la section rythmique.
En plus de leur hits Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child o’ Mine, November Rain ou Night Train, ils ont chanté pas mal de reprises réussies ! Back in Black (AC DC), I Wanna Be Your Dog (The Stooges cover) avec Duff McKagan à la voix et bien sur les classiques Live and Let Die (Wings cover) et Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door (Bob Dylan cover). 2h30 de show !
C’est un énorme plaisir d’écouter encore leurs hymnes légendaires et chanter avec eux. Personnellement, j’étais noyée quelques part dans la foule, loin de la scène et je n’ai entendu personne se plaindre. Un prochain GUNS, moi j’y vais !

Et conférence de presse Avatar… Petit compte rendu :
*le nouvel album est en préparation mais ils n’ont pas voulu nous dire plus. Juste qu’ils ont trouvé des nouveaux chalenges et ils ont fait les choses différemment encore une fois. Regarder dans le passé, ce n’est pas la tradition chez Avatar. Quelques chansons sont déjà prêtes et l’album sortira probablement en 2023, mais pas avant la fin de la tournée de l’album actuel « Hunter Gathered ».
*Sinon, les garçons sont toujours aussi sympathiques et blagueurs. Ils adorent ce qu’ils font et ils ne sont pas prêts d’arrêter. Ils sont toujours motivés pour trouver des nouvelles inspirations, de s’améliorer, devenir un meilleur « Avatar».
*Le chanteur Johannes Eckerström, nous dévoile qu’avec son maquillage, ses costumes et son jeu théâtral ne se sent pas comme un personnage, il se sent plutôt soi-même. Un soi – même « exagéré » des milliers de fois.
*Un chose sympathique : à la question quelle chanson de leur répertoire ils aimerions être interprété par un autre artiste et quel artiste, ils ont répondu « Hail the Apocalypse » par Pantera. Avis donc à Pantera qui a annoncé récemment son come-back en 2023.
Maintenant les concerts …
En route vers les mainstage, un petit arrêt au Temple ou se produisent les quatre Tchèques de Cult Of Fire. Scénographie peu commune pour un concert de métal…un chanteur et les deux musiciens qui l’accompagne sont assis sur des trônes, visages totalement couverts par un tissu noir. L’odeur d’enceint est très forte, on dirait qu’on assite plutôt à une messe à l’église ou à un rituel. Les spectateurs sont venus nombreux.
Bullet for My Valentine (Mainstage 2)
Avec un show énergique et bien ficelé, les gallois de Bullet For My Valentine nous offre une jolie incursion dans leur discographie. Presque tous les albums seront présents. A noter une entrée fracassante avec Your Betrayal et un excellent Jason Bowld à la batterie, phénoménal pendant tout le concert.
Four Words (To Choke Upon), Tears Don’t Fall ou Scream Aim Fire provoqueront le grand enthousiasme de l’audience. La voix de Matt Tuck est impeccable et très bien soutenue comme d’habitude par Jamie Mathias (basse et voix).
Avatar (Mainstage 1)
Sur les notes de « Je t’aime moi non plus » de Gainsbourg, le batteur d’Avatar, John Alfredsson lance de roses bleu blanc rouges dans la foule avant d’entamer l’infernale Hail The Apocalypse derrière ses fûts. Les autres musiciens le rejoints et la machine infernale Avatar se met en route. Le chanteur Johannes Eckerström déguisé et maquillé en clown est époustouflant. Get in Line et Colossus extrait de dernier album Hunter Gatherer suivent.
Jonas « Kungen » Jarlsby (guitare), Tim Öhrström (guitare) et Henrik Sandelin (basse) sont tout aussi agités. Headbanging monstrueux, des moulins à vent synchronisés et les solos dantesques. La foule est en délire et chante joyeusement les refrains avec eux. Eckerström déborde d’énergie. Son interprétation théâtrale/clownesque est euphorique. Il bouge en permanence et interagit souvent avec la foule.
Ambiance d’incendiaire pour Bloody Angel et The Eagle Has Landed avec une impressionnante marée de bras en l’air faisant des vagues avec frénésie. La performance des suédois se termine en apothéose avec le brutal Silence in the Age of Apes et Smells like a Freak show et le circle pit de rigueur. Seul bémol quelques problèmes des fluctuations de son et des interférences très désagréables.
Johannes Eckerström nous rappelle qu’ils reviendront en France début 2023 en France. On sera là.
Bring Me The Horizon (Mainstage 2)
Tout le monde à les yeux et les objectifs photos braquées sur le leader charismatique Oliver Sykes. Le chanteur ultra-tatoué porte un haut couleur chair imitant des contrefaçons de tatouages qui recouvre ses propres tatouages. Les autres musiciens resteront plus en retrait tout au long du show. Un écran géant au fond de la scène diffuse des images, des dessins, un graphisme et des couleurs fantastiques.
Il est absolument impressionnant au chant qui ça soit clair ou hurlé growl. Il interagit non-stop avec la foule même si on aimera bien entendre moins de « fuck et fucking ». Il passera même aux premiers rangs pour faire des Free Hugs.
Le set pulvérise la foule, l’énergie est débordante, le son est ultra puissant. Can You Feel My Heart Teardrops, Dear Diary, Mantra, Parasite Eve ou Kingslayer, les hits s’enchainnent. Des riffs énervés, la voix extraordinaire. L’audience adore, saute avec frénésie, crie et chante avec eux. Oli continue sans arrêt à les pousser pour former des circle-pits.
Il y aura aussi des danseuses présentes sur scènes qui exécutent de chorégraphies différentes pour chaque morceau. Elles changeront de costumes à chaque fois et porteront même de combinaisons de protection antivirus. Obey et Throne se chargent de conclure un set impressionnant.
BLACK LABEL SOCIETY (Mainstage 1)
Zack Wylde et ses acolytes jouent devant une foule compacte car désormais il est quasiment impossible de bouger, les fans de Metallica sont déjà en place. L’audience fait un accueil sur mesure au morceaux groovy garnis de très énormes solos joué même sur le dos. Black Label Society toujours une valeur sure.
MERCYFUL FATE (Temple)
Dommage qu’on n’ait pas le temps de voir le concert Mercyful Fate, mais juste 2 morceaux suffisent pour se rendre compte que le légendaire King Diamond n’a rien perdu de sa superbe. La voix perchée, la scénographie et les costumes extravagantes sont en place.
METALLICA (Mainstage 1)
Probablement, tous les festivaliers qui se trouvent sur le site de Hellfest sont là, devant les 2 mainstages, donc approximative 60000 personnes. Cette foule compacte assistera au 2 h de show apocalyptique de Metallica. Un moment historique qu’on attendait depuis longtemps.
A travers un set liste qui va parcourir toute leur discographie, les 4 Hoursemen nous gratifient d’un show impressionnant : Wiplash, Seek and Destroy, Enter Sandman, For whom the Bells Tolls, Nothing Else Matters, Moth into Flame, bref… impossible de faire plus varier.
Le son est parfait. James Hetfield, Rob Trujillo, Kirk Hammett et Lars Ulrich sont en forme et de bonne humeur. Le frontman ne manque pas de s’adresser au public et semble apprécier le site de Hellfest qui a sorti tous ses flammes pour fêter ce moment unique. Pareil Lars Ulrich qui se demande pourquoi ils n’ont pas été invités avant.
Les musiciens s’échangent les places et jouent souvent sur l’avancement de la scène (autour du fameux Snakepit), donc très près des fans. La scène est assez minimaliste : Les effets de lumières et pyrotechniques sont utilisés avec parcimonie et tant mieux ! On note surtout les fantastiques lasers et bien sûr les grands écrans qui change de couleurs ou déroulent des images et nous permettent de suivre les musiciens de loin.
Le rappel avec « Damage Inc. », One et Master of Puppets sera spectaculaire.
Un final tout en beauté avec une feu d’artifices inoubliable et l’annonce des dates pour l’année prochaine ! Merci HELLFEST !

English Version
7 days of concerts, 362 bands, 420,000 spectators, the festival, HELLFEST (Clisson, Loire -Atlantique, France) beat all the records in 2022.
After two consecutive editions postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the organizers have offered us a gigantic 15th anniversary edition that has exceeded all our expectations. A historic edition closed with an anthological concert of Metallica, who performed for the first time on the lands of Clisson, France.
With an incredible line-up, there was metal for all tastes: heavy, death, black, black epic or baroque, occult, trash, nu, industrial and of course there was rock, hard rock, blues and even folk. And 2 spectacular fireworks.
MAINSTAGE 1, MAINSTAGE 2, WARZONE, ALTAR, VALLEY, TEMPLE… we walk kilometres between the 6 festival stages (not to mention the round trips parking – shuttle – festival).
We walked in the scorching sun, in the rain, in the mud or in the gravel. But we did it! With the joy and good mood of finding our good habits of 3 years ago.
The luckiest (and bravest) did the 2 weekends of festival and in between, they took the opportunity to visit the region, the Loire Atlantique with its green vineyards and beautiful coastal paths.
Here at Rock Art Fashion, we did 5 out of 7 days of festival on June 19, then from June 23 to 26 and we made the most of it. We saw the big band in the metal rock scene, we saw our favourites and we also made beautiful discoveries.
We crisscrossed the shady alleys, we found with pleasure the fountains, the trees, the iron container bars that spit fire and above all, we admired the new gigantic sculptures – including the imposing statue of Lemmy Kilmister (12 m high and 5 tons of steel) and the monumental statue of the Raven.
We tested good food: Argentinian, Alsatian, Savoyard etc. And above all we saw big smiles, happy faces, people partying, singing, dancing, slamming… forgetting about isolation, distancing…enjoying as before. And it feels good.
We saw costumes, disguises, masks (not surgical or FFP2), the Hellfest T-Shirts of all editions, or those with the effigy of their favourite band and we saw the endless queues at the souvenir shop.
The skull prints, crosses, messages of all kinds, the beautiful tattoos and pretty makeup flocked in front of the scenes.
As every year, festival-goers are more and more creative. We know at HELLFEST, you can dress as you want without fear of inappropriate comments. Everyone is super cool.
The weather was quite capricious between the big heat wave of the first weekend and the rain of the second, this year, we should have not forgotten the water bottles, hats, caps, bandanas and sunscreens and but also the sweaters and the rain ponchos.

Escaped close to the big heat wave of the previous 2 days, we get to know the new car park, the shuttle and obviously we arrive later than expected…
BORKNAGAR (Temple)
BORKNAGAR is a Norwegian progressive metal band from Bergen. So, we expect a journey through the vast snowy landscapes of Norway. The show is speed and brings many pace changes. The powerful guitars are accompanied by retro keyboards and the clear vocals alternate with growl parts of formidable efficiency. We navigate between brutal black metal atmospheres, and those folk, progressive, very melodic and catchy. Up North is very energetic, the atmospheric Voices triggers thunderous applause. A very successful show and a great discovery for me.
DOWN (Mainstage 2)
Phil Anselmo is a regular at the festival and this year, it is with his band DOWN that he came to pour out his rocky voice. The New Orleans combo delivers a stoner set – sluge – metal of very good quality. The musicians are in great shape and obviously very happy to be there.
Guitarists Kirk Windstein, Pepper Keenan and bassist Patrick Bruders energetically shake their hair (or long beards …) while exchanging their places on the stage.
Anselmo constantly interacts with the crowd. He expresses his joy at being there and thanks the audience and Hellfest many times.
The sound is very loud, the voice is quite well mastered, the riffs are sharp and the rhythm heavy. The groove of the concert pleases the headbangers who came to let off steam in front of mainstage 2. Since its formation, Down has released three studio albums and 2 EPs, yet it is on the first album, NOLA, that the band highlights tonight.
JUDAS PRIEST (Mainstage 2)
Judas Priest celebrates its 50th anniversary with a superb show. A set list to celebrate the event, best of 50 years with the essential You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’, Painkiller, Turbo Lover, Hell Bent For Leather (with the legendary arrival of Rob Halford in Harley on stage), Breaking The Law or Living After Midnight.
A stunning Rob Halford. Even if sometimes he seems a little tired, he has lost absolutely nothing of his impressive vocal abilities to the point that we wonder if there is not a technological trick somewhere. And obviously add his spectacular clothing: the leather jackets, the denim coats.
Richie Faulkner and Andy Sneap impeccable on guitar as well as Ian Hill and Scott Travis on rhythm section. The audience was obviously there with circle pits and big ovations. With 50 years of career, we are afraid of farewell but the message of the end reassures us “The Priest will be back”. Fantastic!
GOJIRA (Mainstage 1) A huge crowd for Gojira’s show. A veritable war machine, the French band is unleashed. The sound is gigantic and the visuals are spectacular.
CORONER (Altar)
Coroner plays almost the same time as Gojira, so I leave Mainstage 1 to see a bit of the Swiss show. The audience is still quite numerous under the Altar’s tent. The show is a bit static but the sound is excellent. The Swiss trio led by front man Ron Royce is in great shape. The ruthless riffs, the raw sounds, angry singing, everything works perfectly to the great pleasure of the headbangers not yet tired.

PHIL CAMPBELL & THE BASTARDS SONS (Mainstage 1)
The band that former Motörhead guitar player Phil Campbell forms with his three sons performs in the early afternoon a set consisting entirely of covers of Motörhead. Probably to pay tribute to the great Lemmy Kilmister. Indeed, the legendary musician will be honoured late at night with a ceremony planned around his new monumental statue, in the presence of his band mates, Phil Campbell & Mikkey Dee. It’s nice to hear great classics like Killed By Death, Ace Of Spades or Overkill, but we would have liked to discover some songs from band’s discography.
Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown (Mainstage 2)
High quality Blues Rock N’Roll, big smiles, stage play, sharp riffs, Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown offers us an energetic show. Visibly delighted to be there, the front man accompanied by his favourite pink guitar (Pinky) lets loose in devastating solos, headbanging and runs from right to left of the stage. In the set list, their hits, On to the next, House on Fire and also the excellent Mojo Workin’ (Muddy Waters’ cover).
Thunder (Mainstage 1)
Dizzying riffs, powerful hard rock songs, the icons of British classic rock, Thunder delivers a great show in front of an audience of happy fans. They will sing only one song from the new album, The Western Sky. The rest of the set will consist of the best known songs in their disography, like Last One Out Turn Off The Lights, The Devil Made Me Do It, Backstreet Symphony. The singer Danny Bowes keeps the crowd engaged, the band and the audience have a great time.
The Last Internationale (Mainstage 2)
On mainstage 2, the New York duo formed by Delila Paz (vocals, bass, piano) and Edgey Pires (guitar), pulverize us with an ultra-energetic show. Unfortunately, too short!!!
The charismatic singer with a huge voice and the guitarist with sharp riffs are accompanied on stage by 3 members of the French band, Shaka Ponk (Ion on drums, Mandris on bass and Steve, on keyboards)
The excellent Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Indian Blood, is followed by the incendiary Hit ‘Em With Your Blues, Delila and Edgey are real balls of energy.
For Wanted Man, Delila grabs the bass and encourages the audience to join her to sing and clap the hands with her. Great moment with the beautiful song, Soul on Fire, when the singer will be carried by the subjugated crowd.
Classic rock with folk and blues roots, revolutionary and committed lyrics set on maximum power riffs and a passionate soul voice, the duo captures the crowd with their raw energy and relentless charm. The show will end with an extraordinary cover of Oh, Freedom (Odetta). Great ovations from the audience!
Tribulation (Altar)
I don’t know the Swedish band at all except the bio provided by the festival which presents them as the band “who climbed the ladder at high speed”.
It’s rather a nice surprise. Melodic death metal and with a sepulchral voice posed on great addictive classic heavy riffs. The groove is catchy and effective. Too bad the band performs in a great fog, not easy to capture their expressive faces painted in black and white.
Going to see Whitesnake we pass by Temple – a huge crowd for the Swiss band ZEAL & ARDOR, proof that the talented Manuel Gagneux and his band have made a reputation for themselves and their experimental mix of metal has gained a lot of fans. Congratulations to them!
Whitesnake (Mainstage 1)
This is the Farewell Tour for the mythical group WHITESNAKE and indeed the front man David Coverdale very moved, announces his presence for the last time at the festival. The tall charismatic blonde with a beautiful voice and his band sing hit after hit. Mega pleasure to listen live for one last time the hard rock anthems: Bad Boys, Give Me All Your Love, Is This Love or Here I go again. To finish in style with Still of the Night joined for by a distinguished guest: the great Steve Vai who performed on mainstage 2 just before.
Special mention for the incredible drummer Tommy Aldridge. His solo leaves us practically speechless. After introducing his entire band, Coverdale bids us farewell and launches “Be safe, be happy, and don’t let anybody make you be afraid”. We hope that they will change their minds.
Helloween (Mainstage 2)
It is also a great pleasure to find on mainstage 2, Helloween, the German veterans of speed/power metal. Even more to discover a setlist turned towards the first albums. Fan at first hour, it is however the first time when I see “the pumpkins” live. The show is super energetic. Scenography, frenzied solos, the singing duo Michael Kiske / Kai Hansen works very well.
The anthems Metal Invaders / Victim of Fate / Gorgar / Ride the Sky / Heavy Metal is the Law from Walls of Jericho make a big impact. It’s a great show. The audience welcomes with great enthusiasm the German formation at the top tonight.
They will be back in Paris on 30th of August at l’Olympia and on 31 august in Lyon.

Dirty Shirt & Transylvanian Folklore Orchestra
We start the day with the big party that Dirty Shirt & Transylvanian Folklore Orchestra offers us in the Temple tent. The Romanian band performs for the first time at Hellfest and obviously, they are firmly decided to show us what they have been capable of: an exceptional symbiosis between powerful metal and traditional Romanian music, enormous energy, overflowing joie de vivre and unlimited generosity.
On the stage of Temple 19 musicians: the 8 permanent members of the band accompanied by 3 backing vocals and 8 traditional musicians (violins, flutes, cellos, trumpets). Metalcore riffs mixed with violins to which are added rhythmic percussions, synths and many other different sounds: flutes, trumpets, cello. That’s the strength of this live. Songs are terribly effective that appeal enormously to the public.
Big party and the good mood on the stage and in the audience too.
The singers Dan “Rini” Craciun, clear and androgynous voice and Robert Ruz, deep and screaming voice alternate their parts and they constantly interact with the crowd and encourage them to sing and dance with them.
Their latest album “Get Your Dose Now” is largely present in the set list with Dope-A – Min, Hot for Summer, Pretty Faces. Note the excellent Geamparalele with the female voices that stand out. The 3 girls backing vocals are excellent throughout the concert, they dance and sing with frenzy.
Great ovations and crowd surfing of choristers at the end of the show. The audience probably did not expect to see such an epic concert in the early afternoon. BRAVO!
Ihsahn (Temple)
Coup de Coeur for the Norwegian Ihsahn, emblematic figure of the black metal scene who tonight will present us a varied show with some of his best songs like Stridig or Telemark and also some very successful covers as Rock And Roll Is Dead by Lenny Kravitz and Wrathchild by Iron Maiden. A unique voice and impeccable riffs.
Kreator (Mainstage 2)
Kreator proudly confirms its reputation. Under a pesky rain, the legends of German trash metal deliver an excellent show. The group led by the talented Mille Petrozza for 40 years is at the top of its form. The show is meticulous: the cadence is infernal, the riffs sharp and the voice angry. On stage “corpses” hanged and impaled, flames, and even confetti at the end of the set.
Petrozza asks for more enthusiasm from the crowd who are starting to make circle pit despite the rain getting heavier and heavier. New French bassist Frédéric Leclercq expresses his joy at playing with Kreator for the first time at Hellfest. Currently on tour for the promo of the new album Hate Über Alles, the band will sing for the first time the song Strongest of the Strong as well as the eponymous track, along to the great classics such as People of the Lie or Flag Of Hate.
MINISTRY (Mainstage 1)
When MINISTRY arrives on stage, the rain is already very heavy. The entrance of the Americans is on the anthem of Ukraine with the display of the flag on the screens, accompanied by the message “Ministry stands with Ukarine”
Al Jourgensen and his acolytes start strong with the breath-taking Breathe followed closely by The Missing. No matter the rain, the show is more and more powerful. The veterans of industrial metal are in Olympic shape. The energy of the band is amazing, the sounds excellent. The screen behind broadcasts mind-blowing images.
Fans seem to forget that they are already wet to the bone and react with great enthusiasm. For my part, I withdraw just after Supernaut, the Black Sabbath’s cover, because my camera and myself are no longer able to resist the infernal deluge that falls on Hellfest.

SLIFT (Valley)
While the site has partially turned into a swamp, we arrive too late to see Ayron Jones but early enough to sneak between 2 showers and 12453 puddles at the Valley, where the Toulouse trio SLIFT sets fire with their very angry psychedelic Stoner.
The French band released their second album Ummon in February 2020, so obviously not possible to defend it on stage, but here they are taking their revenge with a show of remarkable power. Sweeping fuzz guitars, incredible mix of garage rock energy and psychedelic parts, the band knocks out the large audience.
Arcturus (Temple)
The Norwegian avant-garde black metal band performs in Altar’s tent. The sound is complex and we travel between the brutality of black metal and some rock, progressive and even symphonic experiments. There are energetic guitars, keyboards and screaming or clear vocals. The musicians, they all look escaped from the psychiatric hospital. In particular the singer, ICS Vortex wearing a straitjacket and aviator glasses, he plays a character visibly whimsical or drunk or completely insane.
Epica (Mainstage 2)
Epica’s symphonic metal enchants us. The voice duo – the charming mezzo-soprano Simone Simons and guitarist/singer Mark Janssen works wonderfully. Complicit stage play, symphonic parts contrast with the energetic growls, the effective riffs, impressive keyboards of all kinds: portable or on rails, to which we add the pyros, the gigantic metal snakes on stage, the Dutch band offers a fantastic performance.
Set list with a nice mix of their albums, including 2 tracks from Omenga, the latest and the flamboyant Abyss of Time – Countdown to Singularity. 20 years of experience, we can see it!
Draconian (Altar)
A small portion of gothic doom death with the Swedish Draconian. The powerful growl balanced by the clear feminine songs creates a beautiful effect. Note that the group performs with 2 singers who alternate the titles the brunette Heike Langhans, singer since 2012, who passes the torch to the blonde, Lisa Johansson back in the band after twenty years. Nice emotional performance.
Myrkur (Temple)
Nordic folk sung in Danish, Myrkur and her angelic voice transports us from Hell straight to Paradise. It is a real trip to the green or snowy Scandinavian moors (there are green plants on the stage but also fog) and a small break for our poor eardrums subjected to a harsh test. Accompanied by several choristers, stringed instruments: violin, cello, a synth (note the absence of guitars) the musician delivers a moment of softness and intimacy that many have widely appreciated, given the screams and applauses between each song.
GUNS N’ROSES (Mainstage1)
Be careful, if you want to read nastiness about the Guns N’Roses concert, go to the next reviw. In any case, everyone expected the worst. However, it was almost impossible to approach the stage already since the Airbourne concert at 7pm.
Slash, Duff and Axl reunited on stage after 25 years, it is a great event (even the Minister of Culture made the trip) especially for those who did not have the chance to see them on stage at the time Appetite for Destruction and Use Your Ilusions (me, for example)
Certainly, Axl has no longer that voice that make them famous. At the beginning, it’s quite bad but after a warm-up time, it gets better. In addition, he makes efforts. He is in pretty good physical shape and run from one side to the other. And the Guns is NOT just Axl’s voice, but also Slash’s riffs, perfect tonight, or killer rhythm section.
In addition to their hits Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child o’ Mine, November Rain or Night Train w listen to a lot of successful covers! Back in Black (AC DC), I want to Be Your Dog (The Stooges cover) with Duff McKagan on vocals and of course, the classics Live and Let Die (Wings cover) and Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door (Bob Dylan cover). 2h30 of show!
It is a huge pleasure to still listen to these legendary anthems and sing with them. Personally, I was drowned somewhere in the crowd, very far from the stage and I didn’t hear anyone complain. A next GUNS concert, I’m going!

And here is the last super busy day on my side. Dirty Shirt Interview – we met the founder of the band, Mihai Tivadar as well as the 3 adorable singers Tea, Miruna and Alexa. We’ll tell you more soon.
And Avatar press conference… Small report:
*The new album is in preparation but they did not want to tell us more. Just that they found a new way to challenge themselves and do everything different once again. A few songs are ready and the album will probably be released in 2023, but not before the end of the tour of the current album “Hunter Gathered”.
*Otherwise, the boys are still as friendly and joking. They still enjoy doing what they do, there is always something new to try. they’re not ready to stop. They are always motivated to find new inspirations, to improve, being a better “Avatar”.
*Singer Johannes Eckerström reveals that with his makeup, costumes and theatrical acting does not feel like a character, he rather feels like a self looks. A self – looks magnified a thousand times over.
*One fun thing: to the question which song from their discography they would like to be performed by another artist and which artist, they answered “Hail the Apocalypse” by Pantera. Notice therefore to Pantera which recently announced its comeback in 2023.
Now the concerts of the day … On the way to the mainstage, a small stop at the Temple where the Czechs of Cult Of Fire perform. Unusual scenography for a metal concert… a singer and the two musicians who accompany him sit on “thrones”, faces totally covered by a black fabric. The smell of encircled is very strong, it seems that we attend a mass in a church or ritual.
Bullet for My Valentine (Mainstage 2)
With an energetic and well-crafted show, the Welsh Bullet For My Valentine offers us a nice foray into their discography. Almost all the albums will be present. Note a smashing entrance with Your Betrayal and an excellent Jason Bowld on drums, phenomenal throughout the concert.
Four Words (To Choke Upon), Tears Don’t Fall or Scream Aim Fire will provoke the great enthusiasm of the audience. Matt Tuck’s voice is impeccable and very well supported as usual by Jamie Mathias (bass and voice).
Avatar (Mainstage 1)
On the notes of Gainsbourg’s “Je t’aime moi non plus”, Avatar drummer, John Alfredsson throws blue-white-red roses into the crowd before starting the hellish Hail The Apocalypse behind his drum kit.
The other musicians join him and the infernal Avatar’s machine sets off. Singer Johannes Eckerström dressed up and made up as a clown is amazing. Get in Line and Colossus from the latest album Hunter Gatherer follow.
Jonas “Kungen” Jarlsby (guitar), Tim Öhrström (guitar) and Henrik Sandelin (bass) are equally agitated. Monstrous headbanging, synchronized windmills and Dantesque solos. The crowd is delirious and happily sings the choruses with them. Eckerström is full of energy. His theatrical/clownish interpretation is euphoric. He moves constantly and often interacts with the crowd.
Incendiary atmosphere for Bloody Angel and The Eagle Has Landed with an impressive tide of arms in the air making waves with frenzy. The performance of the Swedes ends in apotheosis with the brutal Silence in the Age of Apes and Smells like a Freak show and the circle pit of rigor.
Only some problems of sound fluctuations and very unpleasant interferences. Johannes Eckerström reminds us that they will return in France early 2023 in France. We will be there !
Bring Me The Horizon (Mainstage 2)
Everyone with their eyes and photo lenses focused on the charismatic leader Oliver Sykes. The ultra-tattooed singer wears a high flesh color imitating fake tattoos that covers his own tattoos.
A giant screen at the back of the stage broadcasts fantastic images, drawings, graphics and colors. He is absolutely impressive at the vocals that are fantastic rather clear or screamed growl. The other musicians will stay further behind throughout the show.
He interacts non-stop with the crowd even if we will like to hear less “fuck and fucking”. He will even go to the front rows to make Free Hugs. The set pulverizes the crowd, the energy is overflowing, the sound is ultra-powerful.
Can You Feel My Heart Teardrops, Dear Diary, Mantra, Parasite Eve or Kingslayer, the hits follow one after another. Angry riffs, extraordinary voice. The audience loves, jumps frantically, screams and sings with them. Oli keeps pushing them to form circle-pits.
There will also be dancers on stage who change costumes that perform different choreographies for each song. They will even wear anti-virus protection suits. Obey and Throne are in charge of concluding this impressive set.
BLACK LABEL SOCIETY (Mainstage 1)

Too bad we don’t have time to see the Mercyful Fate full concert, but just 2 tracks are enough to realize that the legendary King Diamond has lost none of its superb. The perched voice, scenography and extravagant costumes are in place.

Probably, all the festival-goers who are on the Hellfest site are there, in front of the 2 mainstages, so approximately 60,000 people. This compact crowd will attend Metallica’s 2-hour apocalyptic show.
An historical moment that we have been waiting for a long time. Through a set list that will go through their entire discography, the 4 Hoursemen reward us with an impressive show: Wiplash, Seek and Destroy, Enter Sandman, For whom the Bells Tolls, Nothing Else Matters, Moth into Flame, impossible to find a more eclectic set list.
The sound is perfect. James Hetfield, Rob Trujillo, Kirk Hammett and Lars Ulrich are fit and in a good mood. The frontman does not fail to interact often with the audience and seems to appreciate the site of Hellfest which has taken out all its flames to celebrate this unique moment. Same for Lars Ulrich who wonders why they were not invited before.
The musicians exchange places and often play on the front stage (around the famous Snakepit), so very close to the fans. The light and pyrotechnic effects are used sparingly and so much the better!
We especially note the fantastic lasers and of course the large screens that change colors or unfold images and allows us to follow the musicians from afar. The encore with Damage Inc., One and Master of Puppets will be spectacular.
