De passage à Paris, au Hellfest Corner, Julian et Antoine ont répondus à nos questions. Un immense plaisir de discuter avec des musiciens passionnés et talentueux : on a évidemment parlé d’EXISTANCE, de Wolf Attack, de leur amour pour le heavy metal, des albums préférés et même de Marylin Monroe ! Julian, c’est toi qui as eu l’idée de former EXISTANCE – qui ou quoi t’a donné l’envie de former un groupe de heavy metal ?
Julian : oui, j’ai créé le groupe en 2008. En fait, J’écoutais du heavy metal depuis que j’étais tout petit, j’étais bercé là-dedans. J’ai grandi avec tous les groupes de heavy metal : Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc.
C’est donc venu naturellement. J’ai eu envie de continuer, de faire de la guitare et de monter mon groupe. Et on a enregistré depuis 3 albums : Steel Alive, Breaking the Rock et le nouvel album Wolf Attack qui sortira fin octobre 2021.
Tu joues de la guitare et tu chantes – tu as commencé d’abord la guitare ou le chant ?
Julian : J’ai commencé la guitare d’abord à 16 ans et j’ai créé le groupe quand j’avais 18. Au départ, on cherchait un chanteur mais on n’arrivait pas à en trouver un.
On avait fait des annonces, on a été sur Paris en chercher, on a fait plein d’auditions, mais on ne trouvait pas. Du coup, je commencé à m’y mettre. Mon père m’a payé des cours de chant et j’ai bossé dur. Au début, ce n’était pas gagné mais avec le temps et la persévérance j’ai réussi et j’ai continué.
Mon père avait un groupe à l’époque et je faisais que les chœurs, mais j’étais faux tout le temps. Il me gardait quand même. C’était ma première expérience de scène en tant que choriste.
On avait fait une date dans un pub vers chez nous et le gens m’avait applaudi à ce moment-là et ça a fait un déclic pour moi. J’ai trouvé ça tellement bien et j’ai voulu faire ça tout de suite.
Comment vous vous êtes rencontrés avec Antoine ?
Julian : Avec Antoine on s’est rencontre en 2012.
Antoine : Ils cherchaient un guitariste à l’époque et quelqu’un qui s’occupait du groupe m’a contacté sur facebook. J’étais chaud pour l’audition. Je suis donc venu pour faire 2 auditions et c’est comme ça qu’on s’est rencontré. Et on ne se pas quitté depuis.
Antoine, tu étais aussi fan de heavy métal avant de rejoindre le groupe…
Antoine : Oui absolument, j’ai aussi grandi dans le même univers musical avec mes parents. Quand j’ai commencé à faire de la guitare forcement, j’ai appris sur ce que j’écoutais, donc j’ai un peu acquis les codes. Et quand j’ai écouté ce qu’EXISTANCE faisait avant que j’arrive, j’ai dit je veux faire ça ! c’est obligé !
Julian : Ce qui est marrant c’est qu’on vivait dans le même village sans le savoir. A ce moment-là, il était parti à Bayonne. Donc en fait, il était à Bayonne et il a retrouvé un groupe qui était de son village.
Antoine : Je suis donc remonté et j’ai bien fait. C’était le destin !
Et le nom d’EXISTANCE d’où vient-il ?
Julian : Dès le début je voulais appeler le groupe comme cela : EXISTANCE. Avec un « A » pour faire une peu original. EXISTANCE parce que la musique qu’on fait c’est du heavy 80s. C’est la musique que j’ai toujours aimée et pendant une période on trouvait que cette musique-là avait commencé à être moins un moins représenté. On voulait montrer que cette musique existe encore.
Antoine : Il n’y avait plus assez de groupes de notre génération qui voulais représenter cette musique. Il y a eu un moment début des années 2010 quand beaucoup de groupes sont revenus à ce style d’origine et on voulait faire partir de cela.
Wolf Attack c‘est votre 3eme album. Comment s’est passé le processus de création ?
Julian : ça a démarré déjà il y a quelque temps.
Antoine : En fait, ça a commencé, quand le batteur Géry a rejoint le groupe officiellement en 2017. Il venait d’arriver et il a apporté quelque chose du nouveau au groupe musicalement et donc on s’est dit – on va commencer à écrire des morceaux. On s’est donné 1 an pour écrire jusqu’au fin 2018. C’est à ce moment-là qu’on est rentré de tournée avec Primal Fear.
En général, le processus d’écriture pour ce style de musique démarre avec la guitare. C’est la guitare qui a donné le ton.
Julian : Souvent les idées viennent en répétition.
Antoine : il y a quelques morceaux en particulier qui vont être composés soit par Julian ou par moi. Donc, un va avoir un début d’idée et puis après, on finit tous ensemble. C’est un travail d’équipe.
Julian : Ça a été un peu le même processus que les précédents albums, sauf qu’il y a eu des petites choses qui ont changé.
Par exemple, on a essayé plus d’adapter la musique au chant. Plutôt que faire l’inverse. Alors qu’avant on composait, on avait le riff guitare, le couplet, le refrain et puis après on aller griffer la voix dessous.
Sauf que des fois, on se rendait compte que peut être la tonalité, elle n’était pas des mieux pour que la voix est bien mise en valeur.
Antoine : et c’était important surtout pour Julien en live, pour pouvoir le faire correctement en concert.
Julian : On compose aussi en pensent au live surtout. On est dans l’optique toujours de ne pas décevoir les gens. On veut qu’en concert ça soit mieux, même que sur l’album. C’est un peu le but.
Donc à part la sortie de l’album vous n’avez pas été impacté par le Covid
Julian : C’est vrai. En décembre 2019, tout était déjà enregistré. On a décidé de reporter la sortie de l’album. On était content de la production de l’album par rapport au précèdent. On était plus satisfaits. Ça correspond plus à ce qu’on attendait, donc on s’est dit, ça sera peut-être bête de le sortir maintenant alors qu’il n’y a pas d’activité.
Et on a surtout eu la chance qu’il ne sorte pas juste avant la pandémie et on soit bloqué derrière. Au final, on peut dire qu’on est chanceux.
Vous avez enregistré en France ?
Julian : Oui, au sud de la France au Rockstone Studio.
Antoine : c’est toujours sympa de faire un album dans le sud…il pleut beaucoup, mais il y a la piscine, il y a des activités, le vélo …On y retournera.
Parmi tous ces morceaux est-ce qu’il y a un qui vous tiens plus à cœur ?
Julian : Je dirais Tears of fire parce que c’est un hommage à mon père (ndlr : le père de Julian est Didier Izard, le chanteur du groupe H-Bomb, décédé en 2018). Ce morceau a été une peu thérapeutique pour moi, pour passer le cap et pour passer cette étape qui a été dure. Donc forcément pour moi, c’est l’un des titres dont je suis le plus fier.
D’ailleurs, il y a aura un clip qui sortira au mois du novembre.
Antoine : Moi, je n’ai pas un morceau que j’aime en particulier. J’aime à peu près tout. Je n’arrive pas à choisir. Je trouve que c’est un album qui est assez varié en soi.
J’espère que ça paraîtra cohérent ; que tous les morceaux ne sont pas différentes et que ça devient un peu n’importe quoi.
Mais, je pense qu’on ne s’est pas du tout mis des barrières pour composer. On ne s’est pas dis- il faudra rester encré dans ce style et pas dépasser. On a écrit comme c’est venu.
Julian : on est sincère dans ce qu’on fait. C’est peut-être égoïste, mais on fait un truc qui nous plait à la base à nous et on s’est dit si ça nous plait forcement ça plaira aux gens qui nous connaissent et à ceux qui connaissent déjà le groupe.
On ne se dit pas tiens, il faut qu’on fasse un morceau sonne comme telle parce que c’est la mode en ce moment, tu vois un peu.
Quels sont les thématiques abordés dans vos chansons
Julian : ça peut être des sujets historiques, des faits divers, des réflexions sur la vie… Power of the Guns aborde un sujet plus sur l’écologie, ou on a poussé un coup de gueule parce qu’on a marre de voir que cette planète est si peu respectée.
Antoine : On écrit selon notre humeur : ce qui nous a enjoué, ce que nous a soûlé, des retours d’expériences.
L’Artwork de la pochette est superbe … c’était votre idée ?
Julian : c’est l’artiste guatémaltèque Mario Lopez qui l’a réalisé. On lui a donné nos idées et en fait, il a réussi à l’illustrer parfaitement. Déjà quand il a envoyé le brouillon en noir et blanc, on était impressionnées.
Antoine : il a fait un super travail las dessous.
Il y a un morceau en français – Gwendoline, est-ce que ce votre premier morceau chanté en français ?
Antoine : C’est le premier sur un album. En fait, ce morceau est une reprise, c’est pour cela qu’il est en français …
Julian : c’est un titre de H-Bomb, et donc ça enchaine bien avec Tears of Fire pour l’hommage à mon père. On a voulu faire plaisir à pas mal de fans et des puristes qui nous ont demandé souvent de le faire.
Antoine : on l’a joué quelques fois en concert pendant la tournée et on s’est dit quitte à aller jusqu’au bout autant l’enregistrer. Ça nous faire quelque chose en plus, donc c’était une expérience intéressante.
Julian : Chanter en français c’était une expérience. Car ce n’est pas du tout la même approche. J’ai vraiment dû bosser là-dessous… comment placer les mots pour qu’on entend et on comprenne bien tous ce que je dis. C’est important et donc c’était différent. Sinon, c’est vrai que je préfère chanter en anglais.
A propos, revenons au chant, Julian, tu as une voix extraordinaire qui va vraiment dans les aigues, c’est impressionnant… quel est ton secret et comment est-ce que tu l’entretien ?
Julian : Merci, c’est gentil …avec du Jack Daniels
Antoine …. Et beaucoup de pinard
(Ils rigolent tous les deux) !!!
Julian : il faut un minimum de sérieux pour l’entretenir …surtout quand on est en tournée et quand on faisait 28 dates en 1 mois. Donc, je fais du sport, je vais courir, je bois un petit thé au miel de temps en temps. C’est du travail.
Antoine : c’est comme un sportif et un sportif que s’arrête de s’entrainer c’est mort.
Vous êtes un groupe de heavy metal, vous avez le look avec les cheveux long, les blousons en cuir, les clous, les jeans, est-ce que pour vous c’est important de garder cette image ?
Julian : Pour nous c’est naturel ; on est tout le temps habillé comme ça, ce n’est pas juste une tenue de scène. On est toujours dans une démarche sincère ; donc on est comme ça dans la vie de tous les jours.
Antoine : En fait si tu fais cette musique, tu adopte les codes qui vont avec aussi. Ça rend les choses un peu plus cohérentes. Il faut une cohérence entre ce qu’on écoute et le visuel.
Qui est votre idole ?
Julian : David Coverdale de Whitesnake
Antoine : Mon guitariste préfère est Adrian Smith, d’Iron Maiden. J’aime bien sa façon d’apporter une petite teinte de blues aux morceaux très métal et aux solos de heavy metal pur.
Julian : Par rapport à ce qu’Antone dit, c’est pareil pour David Coverdale – d’amener ce grain bluesy qu’il a dans le heavy, ce charisme qu’il dégage sur scène.
Antoine : En fait c’est typique pour les mecs qui viennent de 70s et qu’il on fait quelque chose dans les années 80. Tous ces styles qui se mélangent, je trouve ça super intéressant et ça sonne trop bien.
Vous commencé les concerts bientôt ?
Antoine : l’album sort le 29/10 et le lendemain on est au FESTIVAL DE VOUZIERS en France et ensuite le 31, on sera au KLINKER CLUB, Aarschot, Belgique avec Victory.
Après, il y aura des dates en 2022, au Petit Bain à Paris avec Rhapsody Of Fire et Nightmare, à Grenoble aussi avec eux et puis, il y a des dates qui ont été reportés et qui seront reprogrammées. Et bien sûr Hellfest en Juin 2022.
Ça vous fait quoi d’être à Hellfest sur la Main stage ?
Antoine : J’ai hâte. Faire un des plus gros festivals en France et en Europe pour un groupe français, c’est un honneur,
Julian : ça fait bizarre. D’habitude on va en tant que festivaliers et puis se dire qu’on va ouvrir le samedi sur la Mainstage ça fait quelque chose … c’est un honneur, une fierté.
Parlons un peu de « Legends Never Die »
Julian : On a eu l’idée de ce projet en pleine pandémie, quand on était tellement frustrés de ne pas pouvoir sortir l’album. Et on s’ennuyait.
On voulait rendre hommage à nos idoles avec des reprises de groupes qui nous ont influencés. On a fait 5 morceaux et ça nous a permis de garder la connexion avec les gens, d’avoir des nouvelles des fans. Ça nous a fait vraiment du bien.
Ça a été vraiment un challenge pour nous niveau musical. On voulait être sûrs d’arriver à faire un truc bien…mettre un peu notre patte mais tout en respectant l’œuvre de l’artiste.
Comment vous avez choisi les 5 morceaux, j’imagine qu’il y en avait beaucoup sur votre liste
Julian : c’était compliqué. Pour choisir les groupes, ça a été plus facile. Quant aux titres, on voulait des titres qui soit peu repris, qui ont été repris mais pas trop. A part pour Rainbow, Kill the King qui a été repris pas mal de fois. Et puis, ce sont des morceaux qu’on a adorés et qu’on a travaillé pour apprendre la guitare quand on était plus jeunes.
Sur l’album Breaking the Rock il y a un morceau qui s’appelé Marylin (Icon Of Desire) …c’est peut-être la seul chanson hommage à Marilyn dans le heavy metal. Comment c’est venu l’inspiration ? Qui est le fan numéro 1 ?
Julian : je pense qu’on l’aime tous bien mais peut être moi en particulier. J’avais regardé un documentaire sur sa vie et en fait, on se rend compte qu’elle était adulée, admirée par plein de gens mais au final elle n’était pas heureuse. On abusait d’elle. Elle était un sexe symbole, une icone mais elle était limite prise pour un objet, et j’ai trouvé ça très mal.
Du coup le morceau, les paroles, je l’ai écrit dans une nuit juste après avoir regardé ce documentaire. Ça m’a marqué. Je n’avais pas dormi de la nuit et j’écris cette chanson.
Une playlist de confinement ? Qu’est-ce que vous écoutez en ce moment ?
Julian : En fait, j’aime écouter un album du début jusqu’à la fin, tu sais à l’ancienne, … j’ai une platine vinyle. Je mets un vinyle et j’écoute. Je ne suis pas très playlist Spotify ou autre. Récemment, j’ai acheté Ready An’ Willing de Whitesnake que j’écoute en ce moment. C’est la période la plus bluesy de Whitesnake que j’aime bien.
J’ai écouté récemment Thin Lizzy –Live and Dangerous et les Van Halen, je les ai tous écouté récemment. J’aime aussi Saxon, j’ai écouté Innocence is No Excuse – ce n’est pas l’album que beaucoup de gens citent, mais je l’aime beaucoup.
Apres, ça peut être des groupes un peu plus glam comme Warrant ou Skid Row.J’aime beaucoup Pretty Maids aussi. Il y a un paquet à citer.
Et parmi les groupes français ?
Julian : Je suis plus dans les groupes français de l’époque Vulcain, Sortilège, Warning, Trust, H-Bomb forcement. Parce j’ai grandi avec leur musique. Dans les groupes français aujourd’hui, il y a quand même de bons groupes, après, c’est compliqué aujourd’hui niveau promo surtout qu’on est dans un pays ou cette musique est loin d’être démocratisé.
A toi avis, pourquoi ce problème en France ?
Julian : Je pense que c’est à cause de médias publiques. Les radios ne passent pas cette musique alors qu’il y a vraiment un public. Quand on voit que le Hellfest est sold out en quelque minutes alors que des fois, on ne connait pas même pas les groupes. Et même pour d’autre festivals en province.
Il y a vraiment un public mais les médias ne veulent pas s’en occuper …. Je ne comprends pas… il ya une mauvaise image parce qu’on écoute du métal ?
C’est dommage, mais c’est peut-être aussi ce qui lui rend ce côté un peu underground et finalement, ce qui fait qu’il y a autant des gens qui l’écoute maintenant. Ça donne un côté rebêle d’écouter cette musique et pas celle qu’on passe à la radio, celle qu’on veut nous mettre dans les oreilles tous les temps
Qu’est que tu aimes faire quand tu ne fais pas de la musique ?
Julian : Je fais du sport mais c’est surtout en rapport avec la musique, pour la voix, je vais courir. Je fais pas mal du sport pour être en forme. Ne pas être essoufflé sur scène, c’est important.
Ensuite, je fais beaucoup de moto, je retrouve des potes, des bikers. Je fais souvent des concentrations moto. Ça me fait du bien. Quand tu roules en moto, ça permet de faire le vide dans ta tête, de te concentrer seulement sur ce que tu es en train de faire, de rouler. J’aime bien ça.
Un bon souvenir de vos tournées ?
Julian : on va dire la tournée qu’on a fait avec Primal Fear et Riot. L’un de meilleur moment, c’est la dernière date qu’on a faite en Allemagne. Le bassiste de Riot, Don, et monté sur scène pendant qu’on jouait. Il est venu faire les chœurs sur nos morceaux.
Nous après, on a fait les chœurs sur leurs morceaux et après, on a fini tous sur scène avec Primal Fear. Et on a fait une soirée derrière. C’était vraiment un super souvenir. En plus, on relâchait la pression de la tournée.
On a essayé de rester sérieux pendant toute la tournée et on s’est lâché pour la dernière date. Ça laisse un souvenir indélébile.
Où tu aimerais jouer un jour ?
Julian : Mon rêve est d’aller jouer au Japon. On a un label et on signe l’album là-bas au Japon. C’est un pays mythique, légendaire.
Tous les grands groupes ont enregistré un live au Japon et il y a vraiment une culture de cette musique là-bas. Il y a beaucoup des fans. Aussi j’aimerais jouer en Amérique du sud. Et il reste plein de festivals à faire : des gros et des moins gros. Il y a beaucoup de chose à faire encore.

Antoine : on a hâte de retrouver tout le monde sur scène, de retrouver le public et de pouvoir tous repartir en festivals, retrouver un peu notre vie d’avant.
Julian : on a hâte de voir les retours des gens sur l’album, en espérant que ça plaise à maximum des personnes et de tous vous revoir bientôt en concert après concerts

Julian it was you who had the idea to form EXISTANCE – who or what gave you the desire to form a heavy metal band?
Julian: Yes, I formed the band in 2008. In fact, I had been listening to heavy metal since I was a little kid, I was rocked into it. I grew up with all the heavy metal bands: Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc. So, it came naturally. I wanted to continue, to play guitar and to set up my band.
And since, we have recorded 3 albums Steel Alive, Breaking the Rock and the new album Wolf Attack which will be released at the end of October 2021.
You play guitar and you sing also – did you start guitar or vocals first?
Julian: I started playing guitar first at 16 and I started the band when I was 18. Initially, we were looking for a singer but we couldn’t find one.
We had made announcements, we went to Paris looking for them, we did a lot of auditions, but we couldn’t find it.
So, I started to get into it by myself. My father paid some singing lessons and I worked hard. At first, it was not easy but with time and perseverance I succeeded and I continued.
My father had a band at the time and I only did the backing vocals, but I was fake all the time but he kept me anyway. We had done a concert in a pub near our home and the people had applauded me at that time and I love it. I felt so good and I wanted to do it right away.
How did you meet Antoine?
Julian: We met in 2012.
Antoine: They were looking for a guitarist at the time and someone who was in charge of the band contacted me on Facebook. I was hot for the audition. So, I came to do 2 auditions and that’s how we met. And we haven’t left each other since.
Antoine, you were also a fan of heavy metal 80s before joining the band…
Antoine: Yes absolutely, I also grew up in the same musical universe with my parents. So, when I started playing guitar, I learned about what I was listening to, so I acquired a little bit of the codes of heavy metal.
And when I listened to what EXISTANCE was doing before I arrived, I said I want to do this!
Julian: The funny thing is that we lived in the village without knowing it. At that time, he had gone to Bayonne, so actually he was in Bayonne and he found a band in his native village.
Antoine: I had to come back to my village and I did well. It was fate!
And where does the name EXISTANCE come from?
Julian: From the beginning, I wanted to call the band like this: EXISTANCE. With an “A” to make it a little original. EXISTANCE because the music we make is heavy metal 80s. This is the music I have always loved and for a period we found that this music began to be less performed … We wanted to show that this music still exists.
Antoine: There weren’t enough bands of our generation that wanted to represent this music. There was a moment in the early 2010s when a lot of bands went back to this original style and we wanted to start from that.
Wolf Attack is your 3rd album. How was the creative process?
Julian: It started some time ago.
Antoine: Actually, the writing started, when drummer, Géry officially joined the band in 2017. He had just arrived and he brought something new to the band musically and so we thought – ok, we’re going to start writing songs.
We gave ourselves 1 year to write it, until the end of 2018. That’s when we came back from touring with Primal Fear.
In general, the writing process for this style of music starts with the guitar. It was the guitar that set the tone.
Julian: Most of the ideas come often during the rehearsals
Antoine: There are a few songs in particular that will be composed either by Julian or by myself. So, one of us is going to have a beginning of idea and then we all end up together. It’s a team effort.
Julian: It’s been almost the same process as the previous albums, except to some little things that have changed.
For example, we tried more to adapt the music to the vocals. Rather than doing the other way around. Whereas before we composed, we had the guitar riff, the verse, the chorus and then we go scratch the voice underneath.
Except that sometimes, we realized that maybe the tone was not the best to highlight the vocals.
Antoine: And it was important to be able to do it correctly especially when Julien is singing live.
Julian: We also compose thinking especially about live performance. We are always in the perspective of not disappointing people. We want the songs to be better in concert, even better than on the album.
So actually, you have not been impacted by Covid
Julian: Right. In December 2019, everything has already been recorded. But we decided to postpone the release of the album. We were happy with the production of the album compared to the previous ones. It’s more in line with what we expected, so we thought it might be silly to release it now when there is no activity.
And we were especially lucky that it did not come out just before the pandemic and find ourselves stuck behind. In the end, we can say that we are lucky.
Did you record in France?
Julian: Yes, in the south of France at Rockstone Studio.
Antoine: It’s always nice to make an album in the south… it rains a lot, but there is the swimming pool, there are activities, cycling … We will go back for sure.
Among the album tracks is there one that is more important to you?
Julian: I would say Tears of Fire because it’s a tribute to my father (Editor’s note: Julian’s father is Didier Izard, the singer of the group H-Bomb, who died in 2018). This song was a bit therapeutic for me, to overcome difficult moments. So necessarily for me, it’s one of the titles I’m most proud of.
There will be a video released in November for this song.
Antoine: I don’t have a particular a song that I like. I love just about everything. I can’t choose. I think it’s an album that is quite varied in itself.
I think we didn’t put up any barriers to ourselves for composition. We did not say to ourselves – we will have to stay inked in this style and not exceed. We wrote as it came.
Julian: We are sincere in what we do. It may be selfish, but we do something that we like and we thought if we like it necessarily it will please the people who know us and those who already know the group.
We don’t say to ourselves, we have to make a song sound like this or that because it’s the fashion right now, you see.
What are the themes in your songs?
Julian: it can be historical subjects, news, reflections on life… for example, Power of the Guns deals with a subject about ecology, where we shout an angry cry because we are tired of seeing that this planet is so less and less respected.
Antoine: they are according to our mood: what made us joyful or mad
The Art cover is amazing too… was that your idea?
Julian: It’s made by Guatemalan artist Mario Lopez. We gave him our ideas and in fact, he managed to illustrate it perfectly.
When he sent the draft in black and white, we were already so impressed.
Antoine: he did a great job underneath.
There is a song in French – Gwendoline. What can you tell us about it? is this your first song sung in French?
Antoine: It’s the first recorded on an album. In fact, this song is a cover, that’s why it’s in French
Julian: It’s an H-Bomb track, so it follows well with Tears of Fire for the tribute to my father. We wanted to please a lot of fans and purists who often asked us to do it.
Antoine: We played few times in concert during the tour and we thought it will be good to record it. It did something extra to us. It was an interesting experience.
Julian: Singing in French was an experience. Because it is not at all the same approach. I really had to work underneath… how to place the words so that we all hear and understand what I am saying. It’s important and it was different. Otherwise, it’s true that I prefer to sing in English.
By the way, let’s go back to singing, Julian, you have an extraordinary voice, it’s impressive… what is your secret and how do you keep it in shape?
Julian: Thank you, that’s nice… with Jack Daniels
Antoine: …. And a lot of pinard
(They are both laughing)!!!
Julian: It takes a minimum of seriousness to take care … especially when we are on tour and when we were doing 28 dates in 1 month. So, I do sports, I run, I drink tea with honey from time to time. It’s a lot of work.
Antoine: It’s like a sportsman and a sportsman that stops training it’s dead.
You are a heavy metal band, you also have the look with long hair, leather jackets, nails, jeans, is it important for you to keep this image?
Julian: For us it’s natural; we’re always dressed like that, it’s not just a stage outfit. We are always in a sincere approach, so we are like that in everyday life.
Antoine: Actually, if you make this music, you adopt the codes that go with it too. You need a coherence between what you listen to and the visual
Who is your hard rock /heavy metal idol?
Julian: David Coverdale of Whitesnake
Antoine: My favourite guitarist is Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden – I like the way he brings a little bit of blues to very metal tracks and pure heavy metal solos.
Julian: it’s the same for David Coverdale. He brings that bluesy touch into heavy metal, that charisma that he exudes on stage.
Are you starting concerts soon?
Antoine: The album comes out on 29th of October 2021 and the next day we are performing at the FESTIVAL DE VOUZIERS in France and then on the 31st of October, we will be at KLINKER CLUB, Aarschot, in Belgium with Victory. After, there will be dates in 2022, at the Petit Bain in Paris with Rhapsody Of Fire and Nightmare, in Grenoble also. And then there are also the dates that have been postponed and that will be rescheduled.
And of course, Hellfest in June 2022.
How do you feel to play at Hellfest on the Main Stage?
Antoine: I can’t wait. To perform to one of the biggest festivals in France and Europe for a French band is an honour
Julian: it’s weird. Usually we go as festival-goers and then say that we will open on Saturday on the Mainstage, it does something … it is an honour, a pride.
Let’s talk a little bit about “Legends Never Die”
Julian: We had the idea for this project in the middle of pandemic, when we were so frustrated not to be able to release the album. And we were bored. We wanted to pay tribute to our idols with covers of bands that influenced us.
We did 5 songs and it allowed us to keep the connection with people, to hear from the fans. It made us feel really good. It was really a challenge for us musically. We wanted to be sure that we could do something well… put a little our own touch while respecting the work of the artist.
How did you choose the 5 tracks, I imagine there were a lot of them on your list?
Julian: it was complicated. For the bands, it was easier. As for the tracks, we wanted songs that were covered too much. Except for Rainbow, Kill the King which has been covered a lot of times.
And then, these are songs that we loved and we worked on them to learn the guitar when we were younger.
On your album Breaking The Rock, there is a song called Marylin (Icon of Desire) … maybe, the only Marilyn Monroe tribute song in heavy metal. How did the inspiration come about? Who is the number 1 fan?
Julian: I think we all love her but maybe me more in particular. I watched a documentary about her life and in fact, we realize that she was adored, admired by many people but she was not happy. She was abused. She was a sex symbol, an icon but she was often taken for an object, and I found this very bad.
I wrote the song, the lyrics in one night just after watching this documentary. It left a mark on me. I hadn’t slept all night and I wrote this song.
A lockdown playlist? What are you listening to right now?
Julian: Actually, I like to listen to an album from beginning to end, you know the old-fashioned way, … I have a turntable. I put on a vinyl and listen. I’m not very Spotify playlist or whatever. Recently, I bought Ready An’ Willing of Whitesnake which I’m listening to right now. This is the most bluesy period of Whitesnake and I love it.
I recently listened to Thin Lizzy –Live and Dangerous and Van Halen, I listened to all of themrecently. I also like Saxon, I listened to Innocence is No Excuse – it’s not the album that a lot of people quote but I like it a lot. After that, it can be bands a little more glam like Warrant or Skid Row. I really like also Pretty Maids. There are a lot to quote.
And among the French bands?
Julian: I’m more into the old era of French bands like Vulcain, Sortilège, Warning, Trust, H Bomb of course. Because I grew up with their music. But there are still good bands today but it is complicated to promote them here, especially because we are in a country where this music is far from being democratized.
In your opinion, why this problem in France?
Julian: I think it’s because of public media. The radios do not play this music even if there is a real big audience here. When we see that the Hellfest is sold out in a few minutes while sometimes, we do not even know the bands. And even for other smaller festivals. There is an audience but the media don’t want to deal with it…. I don’t understand… is there a bad image because we listen to heavy metal?
It’s a shame but maybe that’s also what makes it a bit underground and finally, what makes so many people listening to it now. It gives you a rebel side to listen to this music and not the one they play on the radio…
What do you like to do when you are not making music?
Julian: As I said earlier, I do sports but it’s mostly related to music, for the voice. I go running. I do a lot of sports to be in good shape. When you get on stage, it’s important not being out of breath.
Then, I do a lot of motorcycles with friends, bikers. I often do motorcycle concentrations. It makes me feel good. When you ride a motorcycle, it allows you to clear your mind, to focus only on what you are doing, riding. I like that.
A good memory from your touring?
Julian: The tour we did with Primal Fear and Riot V. One of the best moments was the last date we did in Germany. The Riot V’s bassist Don and came on stage while we were playing. He came to do the backing vocals on our songs.
We then did the backing vocals on their tracks and after that, we all ended up on stage with Primal Fear. And we did a party behind. It was really a great memory.
In addition, we released the pressure of the tour. We tried to stay serious throughout the tour and we let go for the last date. It leaves an indelible memory.
Where would you like to play one day?
Julian: My dream is to play in Japan. We have a label and we sign the album there in Japan. So, I’d like to go there one day. It is a mythical, legendary country. All the big bands have recorded a live in Japan and there’s really a culture of that music there. There are a lot of fans. Also, in South America. And there are still plenty of festivals to do. Big or not so big. There is still a lot to do.

Antoine: we can’t wait to meet everyone on stage, to find the audience, the fans and to be able to go back to festivals, to find our life before.
Julian: We can’t wait to see the feedback from people on the album, hoping that it pleases as many people as possible and to see you all again soon in concerts.
