DeWolff est un groupe Néerlandais de rock néo-psychédélique qui ne vous dit peut-être rien … et pourtant, ils ont déjà sorti 6 albums et jouait plus de 1000 concerts à travers l’Europe, l’USA et l’Australie. En les écoutant, on dirait que les frangins van de Poel, Pablo (chant/guitare) et Luka (batterie)et Robin Piso (orgue Hammond) viennent d’une autre époque. Celle de The Doors, de Led Zeppelin ou de Jimi Hendrix. Celle du rock classique, brut, énergique et sans fioritures.
Leur dernier album, Tascam Tapes sorti le 10 janvier 2020 a été entièrement écrit et enregistré pendant leur tournée : à l’arriere de leur van, en backstage ou sur les aires d’autoroute.
Pablo et Robin m’ont raconté cette aventure. On a aussi parlé de leurs inspirations, de Pulp Fiction, de leur costumes nudie et de prochains projets. Comment vous vous êtes rencontrés et formé DeWolff ?
Pablo: Eh bien, j’ai rencontré mon frère Luka à sa naissance. Robin et moi nous sommes rencontrés dans une colonie de vacances où je jouais à la guitare dans un groupe. Il y avait tous ces enfants, 20 ou 30 qui sont venus pour chanter ensemble et Robin est arrivée avec une guitare acoustique. Après ça, nous devenons amis. Nous étions très jeunes, moi, j’avais 9 ans et Robin, 10 ans.
Des années plus tard quand j’avais 16 ans, Luka avait 13 ans et Robin, 17 ans, nous avons commencé à jouer ensemble chez mes parents. Luca et moi avions l’habitude de jouer beaucoup ensemble alors nous avons invité Robin car il avait récemment commencé à jouer du piano. Pour moi le piano était le même chose que l’orgue et j’ai pensé que peut-être nous pouvons commencer un trio avec orgue, guitare et batterie. Nous avons joué ensemble pendant des heures et c’était vraiment cool. Puis une semaine plus tard, nous l’avons fait à nouveau. Ensuite, nous avons joué à cet Open Mic où beaucoup de chanteurs et compositeurs venaient présenter leur chanson. On est arrivés sur scène et on a joué du massive Rock ‘N’Roll et les gens ont aimé.
Alors, on s’est dit Ok, on va continuer. Puis nous avons remporté ce concours national en 2008 et peu de temps après, l’EP est sorti et nous avons joué à la télévision. Nous avons commencé à jouer des clubs assez cool en Hollande et depuis, on est resté ensemble. Nous avons eu de hauts et des bas. Pour nous, tout a commencé très vite et vraiment bien et puis après quelques années, on a eu quelques moments difficiles mais on s’en est sortis plus forts qu’avant à chaque fois.
Comment vous est arrivé à jouer ce style de Rock ‘N’Roll ? Quelles sont vos influences ?
Robin : Quand nous avons commencé à jouer nous avions une idée claire de ce que nous voulions faire, de la surf musique. Mais ce n’était pas du tout la musique qui est sorti quand nous avons commencé à jouer. Donc, à partir de ce moment, nous avons réalisé que pour nous, ce n’est pas nécessaire de se dire ok, voilà la musique que nous allons jouer. Ça ne marche pas comme cela.
Notre musique a toujours été une sorte de prolongement naturel de l’inspiration musicale que nous avons obtenu en écoutant différents types de groupes. Nous n’écoutons pas aussi de la musique de la même façon que certaines personnes aiment le faire – style ok, nous aimons cet artiste et tout ce qu’ils font est complètement génial. On prend que le meilleur. On peut détester certains albums d’artistes qu’on aime. On a différentes influences musicales de différents artistes et groupes. On peut s’inspirer de hip hop par exemple, même si ça n’a rien à voir avec notre musique.
Pablo : Il y a beaucoup de groupes qui essaient de ressembler à d’autres groupes de rock. On a évolué à partir de toute la musique qu’on aime et beaucoup de cette musique est de la vieille musique. Quand on joue, c’est ce qui sort et nous en sommes fiers. On fait juste la musique qui sort et coule en nous. Comme Robin l’a dit, c’est une extension de nous – même. Nous intégrons toute la musique que nous écoutons, tous les films que nous avons vus, les livres que nous avons lus dans notre musique. Seulement comme cela, je pense que vous pouvez faire quelque chose qui est individuel et honnête. Je pense que c’est le plus important en tant que musicien de faire quelque chose qui est vraiment le vôtre, unique.
Robin : Et faire beaucoup d’argent.
Vous parlez des films dans votre inspiration. Votre nom de groupe vient d’un personnage de Pulp Fiction de Quentin Tarantino (Winston Wolfe interprété par Harvey Keitel) – pourquoi avez-vous choisi ce film ?
Pablo : Nous étions des enfants quand on a choisi le nom du groupe et je suis heureux parce que c’est un bon nom. A l’époque, nous avons découvert le film Pulp Fiction et nous le regardions tout le temps. Donc, il était assez logique pour nous de choisir un personnage de Pulp Fiction.
Robin : Nous avons pensé que c’était cool.
Et si Quentin Tarantino vous contacte pour écrire la bande originale d’un de ses films, le ferez-vous ?
Robin : Je pense que nous l’avons déjà fait, mais il ne s’en rend pas encore compte. En fait, certaines de nos chansons correspondent assez bien à ses films. Si tu as son numéro de téléphone, nous pouvons le contacter.
Parlons maintenant du nouvel album Tascam Tapes? Vous avez enregistré cet album sur la route.
Pablo : Quand nous avons terminé notre album précédent Thrust, nous avons commencé à penser à ce que nous allons faire pour le prochain album. Essayons-nous encore d’écrire nos meilleures chansons ? Et montrer tout ce que nous savons faire dans un album ? Parce que Thrust a eu quelques ballades et des chansons heavy et entre les deux. Et l’enregistrer de la meilleure façon possible ou allons-nous faire quelque chose de complètement différent ? Quelque chose de bizarre et drôle ? Et j’ai eu l’idée d’enregistrer un album pendant qu’on est en tournée sur ce vieux lecteur de cassettes des années 80 appelé Tascam. D’où le nom de l’album Tascam Tapes. D’abord Robin et Luca n’étaient pas très partants et s’est normal car Luca ne pouvait pas jouer à la batterie à l’arrière du van. Donc il fallait utiliser un sampler ou quelque chose comme ça. Nous avions donc des sources très limitées pour faire un album de cette façon. C’était un défi que nous avons relevé.
Robin : Oui, nous n’étions pas très enthousiastes à propos de l’album, mais avant de partir en tournée, nous avons tout mis en place pour vérifier si cela peut fonctionner. L’enregistreur de cassettes, la guitare de Pablo et un très petit synthétiseur parce que mon orgue ne pouvait pas entrer sur la banquette arrière de la camionnette.
Nous avons branché le 3 signaux audio au cassette player et nous appuyé sur l’enregistrement et nous avons commencé à jouer. Et c’était vraiment cool, donc, nous avons dit OK ce sera une grande aventure. Donc, c’est ce que nous avons fait, nous sommes allés en tournée et le premier voyage que nous avons fait était de la Hollande en France. Et à l’arrière du van, nous avons tout connecté, nous avons commencé à jouer et nous avons déjà enregistré la première partie d’une chanson.
Et c’est ce que nous avons fait le reste de la tournée : jamming, écrire et enregistrer de chansons.
Donc, vous avez enregistré tout l’album dans le van?
Robin: Oui, dans le van et mais aussi dans les backstage. Parce qu’en fait entre le moment où vous arrivez à la salle, vous faites les balances et enfin vous montez sur scène, il y a beaucoup de temps libre à tuer. C’est pourquoi on apportait l’enregistreur de cassettes et on mettait tout en place dans les coulisses et on continuait à travailler sur des chansons. Parfois, nous avons aussi une caméra avec nous et un roadie filmait ce qui se passait en tournée.
On a aussi enregistré sur une aire d’autoroute à une station-service. On a trouvé que l’endroit était vraiment cool pour enregistrer une chanson. C’était un bel endroit avec des arbres et comme une sorte de prairie. Prairie vibes . Donc, on a fait une chanson là-bas aussi. Ou une fois on a fait un concert dans une salle avec une acoustique géniale et nous avons enregistré la batterie de Luca. Il a mis l’enregistrement dans son sampler puis nous l’avons utilisé pour écrire une nouvelle chanson.
On s’est vraiment amusé mais c’était aussi vraiment épuisant. Parce que en général, tout le temps libre que vous avez en tournée vous l’utilisez pour se reposer, faire une sieste, se détendre. Et nous pendant tout ce temps libre on enregistrait de chansons ou on l’utilisait pour mettre en place notre l’équipement dans le backstage, etc et à la fin de la tournée, nous étions complètement épuisés.
Sur la pochette de l’album vous mentionnez que vous n’avez dépensé que 50 dollars.
Robin : Ce n’est pas exactement 50 dollars – peut être plus ou moins. Nous n’avons pas payé le loyer d’un studio, Pablo avait déjà l’enregistreur de cassettes qui n’a pas non plus coûté beaucoup d’argent quand il l’a acheté il y a 6 ans. Nous avons acheté des câbles, nous avions une ligne de microphone quelque part, nous avons tout connecté et nous avons commencé à jouer. C’est très différent quand on loue un studio pour un mois et qu’on y enregistre son album. Cela peut couter des milliers d’euros, donc c’était beaucoup moins cher.
Avez-vous un souvenir spécifique au sujet d’une chanson en particulier ?
Robin : Ce qui est cool, c’est que chaque chanson a une histoire dans la façon dont nous l’avons fait ou quel était notre état d’esprit. Je ne peux pas en dire autant des chansons que nous avons enregistrées en studio pour nos albums précédents. Par exemple, Made it to 27, ce n’est pas ma chanson préférée mais j’adore la façon dont on l’a enregistrée sur le bord de la route.
Pablo : Robin était vraiment malade quand nous avons enregistré cette chanson, donc nous nous souvenons très bien. Pour chaque chanson on a un souvenir particulier. Quand tu écris une chanson et ensuite tu passes beaucoup de temps à l’enregistrer dans le studio et tu ne te souviens plus exactement quand elle a été enregistrée ou ce qui s’est passé. Mais dans ce cas, l’écriture et l’enregistrement des chansons se sont produits au même endroit donc on se souvient très bien où et quand on l’a fait.
Robin : Pour Awesomeness of Love, nous avons enregistré la voix après un concert à l’UBU à Rennes en France. C’était un concert vraiment cool et excitant et un après le show, Pablo avait beaucoup d’adrénaline, donc, il se précipita dans les coulisses et m’a crié Robin “Je vais enregistrer la voix en ce moment”. Il l’a fait et vous pouvez l’entendre, il a tellement d’énergie dans la voix.
Vous avez aussi des très beaux costumes pour cet album, je pense à ceux dans la vidéo Blood Meridian I. Qu’est-ce qui vous a inspiré pour ces costumes ?
Pablo : Inspiration viennent des années 50 et 60, des artistes de musique country qui avaient ces costumes géniaux appelés “nudie suits”. J’ai vraiment souhaité qu’un jour nous possédions un costume comme ça, mais personne n’en fait plus. On peut juste acheter un vintage qui coute des milliers de dollars et en plus, il faut en trouver à sa taille. En fait, au début, nous allons juste avoir des costumes blancs, mais on a pensée que ça sera cool de rajouter ces vieux dessins comme sur les costumes nudie. C’était le bon moment d’avoir en fin nos nudies. Nous avons cherché partout quelqu’un qui peut faire ses costumes, mais personne ne pouvait le faire.
Robin : Finalement, on a fait les costumes nous-mêmes – nous avons tout dessiné et puis nous sommes alles chez un tailleur à Amsterdam qui a dit – oh c’est difficile, mais ça peut se faire.
Qu’est ce qu’on peut trouver toujours dans votre valise pendant que vous êtes en tournée ?
Robin : Des chaussettes, des sous-vêtements, des ceintures. Je suis accro aux ceintures en ce moment. J’ai 2 ceintures vraiment spéciaux. Avec de boucles en cuir assortis. C’est vraiment difficile à trouver et ils sont très chers.
Pablo : J’apporte toujours des livres en tournée. 3 ou 4 mais je ne lis que 1 ou 2. J’aime lire, mais quand nous sommes en tournée, on va s’amuser ensemble. C’est plus fun que la lecture.
Je ne suis pas très sentimental mais j’avais un collier qui ressemble à celui que je porte maintenant… En fait, c’est une histoire triste. Mes grands-parents sont morts dans un accident de voiture, il y a 2 ans. Et j’ai eu collier de mon grand-père et je le portais tout le temps, mais je l’ai perdu parce que j’étais soûl et je suis allé me baigner dans une piscine et je l’ai perdu quelque part. J’ai cherché partout mais je ne le pas trouvé. Ce serait la chose que je porterais toujours avec moi.
Quelles artistes vous écoutez en ce moment ?
Pablo : Il y a 2 albums que j’écoute pour les deux derniers mois : Townes Van Sandt – Our Mother in The Mountain qui est un très bel album. Je pense que c’est l’un de mes albums préférés de tous les temps. Et j’écoute aussi un album d’un artiste Français, Theo Lawrence. Il est très jeune. Je l’ai vu à un festival en Hollande, il avait l’habitude de jouer avec son groupe Theo Lawrence et The Hearts. Il faisait de la musique soul.
Et puis, je l’ai vu dernièrement avec son nouveau groupe qui fait plutôt de la musique country. J’étais fan dès la première minute quand je l’ai entendu. Quand j’étais aux États-Unis, j’ai téléchargé cet album Sauce Picante et comme, c’était le seul album que je pouvais écouter parce que je n’avais pas de connexion Internet dans le désert, je l’ai écouté une centaine de fois, peut-être plus. Cet album a vraiment grandi en moi et il est devenu une partie de ce voyage. C’est vraiment cool.
Robin : Récemment, j’ai écouté l’album de Willis Allan Ramsey. C’est un vieux disque. C’est Luka me l’a recommandé. Et aussi, récemment, j’ai écouté Rome un album de Danger Mouse – Daniele Luppi. C’est comme une musique de film mais sans film et c’est vraiment un disque d’hiver pour moi. Quand il fait froid dehors, j’écoute ce disque et ça me réchauffe. Et j’écoute aussi le nouvel album de Theo Lawrence.
Vos artistes préférés pour faire une collaboration ?
Pablo: Il ya beaucoup d’artistes cool. Je pense que nous aimerions tous travailler avec Dan Auerbach des Black Keys. Avec Marcus King un artiste super jeune et il fait de la musique vraiment cool. Et bien sûr avec Theo Lawrence.
Robin: Nous avons beaucoup d’amis en Hollande qui sont des très bons musiciens. On voulait depuis longtemps jouer avec eux, mais ce n’était jamais le moment car on est en tournée, ils sont aussi en tournée. Mais nous avons maintenant ce projet avec 15 personnes sur scène : nous 3, les 4 membres de The Dawn Brothers qui ont fait la dernière tournée avec nous et d’autres amis. Il y a 2 batteurs, des percussions, je joue de l’orgue, on a des guitares, des basses, Pablo chante, on a aussi une fille qui chante et un autre chanteur.
Pablo: Avec Internet, le monde devient plus petit et il est assez facile de contacter d’autres artistes et faire des choses ensemble.
Prochains projets ?
Robin: Il y a un documentaire qui sort avec tout ce que nous avons filmé en tournée, un make of Tascam Tapes.
Pablo: Et je pense que nous allons écrire un nouvel album bientôt …
De la même façon, enregistré en tournée ?
Pablo: Pas de la même manière. Dans une interview précédente, Luca a décrit tout ce que nous avions à faire pour enregistrer à l’arrière du van qui est aussi grand que le canapé sur lequel on est assis maintenant, mettre en place tous les trucs, la guitare, l’enregistreur, les câbles, etc après seulement quelques heures de sommeil. Et je me suis dit j’ai dit Oh mon dieu ça a été trop fatigant d’enregistrer un album de cette façon. C’était très amusant, mais on était épuisé. Nous allons probablement apporter le Tascam sur la prochaine tournée et enregistrer des trucs si nous avons envie mais pas tout l’album.
Je ne suis pas sûr non plus comment seront les prochaines chansons. Il nous reste encore beaucoup d’années devant nous pour faire la musique et ça sera intéressant de faire des albums différents.

DeWolff is a Dutch neo-psychedelia rock band that may not tell you anything… and yet they have already released 6 albums and performed more than 1000 concerts across Europe, the USA and Australia. Listening to them, it seems that brothers van de Poel, Pablo (vocals/guitar) and Luka (drums) and Robin Piso (Hammond organ) come from another era. Frome the one of The Doors, Led Zeppelin or Jimi Hendrix. The one of classic rock, raw, energetic rock.
Their latest album, Tascam Tapes released on January 10, 2020, was entirely written and recorded during their tour: in their van, in backstage or on the motorway service area.
Pablo and Robin told me about this adventure. We also talked about their inspirations, Pulp Fiction, their nudie costumes and upcoming projects. Discover the interview and come and see them in concert on one of their 5 French dates. It looks that their concerts are breath-taking, with incredible energy and boundless enthusiasm.
I would like to start with your roots, how did you start the band, how did you guys meet?
Pablo: Well, I met my brother Luka at his birth. Robin and I actually met in a children camp where I try to play guitar in a band. There were all these children like 20 or 30 from the primary school and they come to sing together and Robin walked in with an acoustic guitar. After the camp we become friends.
We were really young: I was 9 and Robin was 10. Many years later when I was 16 and Luka was 13 and Robin was 17, we met up to jam at my parents house. Luca and I used to jam a lot, so we invited Robin to come over. He had recently started to play the piano and I thought that piano was the same as organ and maybe we can start as a 3-piece band with organ, guitar and drums. We jammed and it was really cool. It was a lot of fun and we did it for hours and hours and then some week later we did it again. And after a couple of times, we played at this Open night mike where a lot of singers and song writers are performing their songs.
We arrived on stage and played this massive loud Rock ‘N’ Roll and people really like it. So, we said Ok, let’s continue to do more.
Then, we won this national competition in 2008 and soon after we released an EP and we performed on TV. We started playing pretty cool clubs in Holland and since then we always stayed together and go through ups and downs. For us, everything started really soon and really fast and really good and then after some years we had like some downs but we always came up stronger than before.
What is actually your influence? How did you start to play this kind of Rock ‘N’ Roll?
Robin: When we started jamming, we had a clear idea of what we wanted to make which was surf music. But clearly that wasn’t the music that came out when we started to play. So, from that moment on we realized that for us, there is no using in making a decision like ok this is the music that we are going to play. It does not work like this.
It’s always has been kind of natural extension of the musical inspiration we got from listening to different kind of bands. We also listen to music not the way that some people do like ok, we like this artist and everything they do is completely awesome. We cherry pick. We can hate some albums of artists that we like. We can get different kind of musical influences from different artists and bands, get inspired by some hip hop for example, even if it does not really fit our music.
Pablo: There are a lot of rock bands that try to sound like other rock bands. We evolve from all music that we love and a lot of this music is really old. When we play that’s what comes out. We take pride in that, just making the music that comes out and flows out of you. Like Robin said it’s an extension of ourselves. We incorporate all the music we listen to, all of the movies we’ve seen, the books we’ve read in our music. Only then, I think you can make something that is individual and I think that that’s the highest goal as a musician: to make something that is truly, something that’s yours.
Robin: And make a lot of money.
You are talking about movies inspiration. Your band name is coming from a character of Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino – why did you choose this movie?
Pablo: We were kids when we came up with the name and I am glad because it’s pretty good name. We discovered the movie Pulp Fiction and we were watching it like all the time, every week. So, it was pretty logical for us that we name ourselves after a character from Pulp Fiction.
Robin: We thought that it was cool.
And if Quentin Tarantino will contact you to write the soundtrack of one of his movies, will you do it?
Robin: I think we already did it but he does not realise it yet. Actually, some of our songs fits his movies pretty good. If you have his phone number, we can contact him.
Let’s talk now about the new album Tascam Tapes? You recorded it on the road.
Pablo: When we finished our previous album Thrust, after a while we started to think what are we going to do with the next album. Are we again try to write our best songs? And show all the things that we do in one album? Because Thrust got some slow songs and heavy songs and everything in between. And record it in the best way possible or are we are going to do something completely different? Something weird and funny?
And I came up with the idea to record an album on tour on this old cassette player from the 80s called Tascam. That’s why the album is called Tascam Tapes. First Robin and Luca weren’t very excited about it which make sense as Luca could not drum on the record. Because if we record in a van and in back stages, you cannot have a drum kit over there, so we had to use like a sampler or something like that. We had very limited sources to make the album in this way, so it was a kind of challenge we took on. But it was a very funny album to do.
Robin: Yeah, we weren’t very enthusiastic about the album but just then, before we went on tour, we set up everything to check out if it will work. The cassette recorder, Pablo’s’ guitar and a really small synthesiser because the organ and could not use in the back seat of the van. The 3 audio signals run into the cassette and we press record and we started playing. And it sounded really cool so, we said OK it will be a great adventure. So that’s what we did, we went on tour and first trip we made it was from Holland to some place in France. And in the back of the van we connected the speakers, we started jamming and we already recorded the first part of a song. That’s what we did it the rest of the tour: jamming, writing songs and recording.
So, you recorded all the album in the van?
Robin: Yeah, in the van and also backstage. Because actually between the time when you arrive at the venue, you did the sound check and then you did the show, so there is plenty of free time in between.
So that’s why also we took out of the van the cassette recorder and we set everything up in the backstage and we continue working on songs in the backstage. Sometimes, we also have a camera with us and a roadie filmed what was happening on tour. We thought that this is gone be a really cool footage.
Once, we just stop on the side of the highway at a gas station and it was a really cool location to record a song. It was a beautiful location with trees, like a prairie kind of vibes and we also recorded a song there. Or one time we arrived at a venue with a really nice acoustic sound and we set up the Lucas drum there and we recorded his drums. He put the recording into his drum sampler then we used that to write a new song.
There was a lot of fun. It was also really exhausting cause all the free time you have on tour usually you use it to rest, take a nap or just relax. And for us, all the free time we put it in making and recording songs, setting up the recoding gear in the backstage and by the end of the tour we were completely exhausted.
On the album cover you mention you spent only 50 dollars to record the album
Robin: It’s not exactly 50 dollars – it might be less or more. We did not have to pay for a studio rent, Pablo already had the cassette recorder which also did not cost a lot of money when he bought it 6 years ago. We just bought some cables, we had a microphone line around somewhere, we connected everything and started playing. That’s very different when you rent a studio for a month and record your album there. That’s going to cost you something like thousands of euros, so this was much cheaper.
Do you have special memory about a song in particular?
Robin: The cool thing about all these songs is that every song has a story of how we made it, how we were feeling. I cannot say the same for the songs that we recorded in the studio for our previous albums. For example, Made it to 27, it’s not my favourite song but I love as we recorded it on the side of the road which is really cool.
Pablo: Robin was really sick when we recorded this song, so we remember very well. Every song has a special memory. Usually, you write the song and you spent a lot of time record it in the studio and you do not remember when and what happened. But in this case, the writing and the recording happen in the same place, so it was inevitably a different place for every song.
Robin: For Awesomeness of Love, we did the vocals after a show at UBU in Rennes in France. It was a really cool and exciting show and a after the show, Pablo had a lot of adrenaline, so right after the show he rushed in the backstage and shouted to me Robin “I am gonna do a vocal tape right now”. He did the vocal tape and you can hear it, he has so much energy in the vocals.
You also have some great outfits for this album, I am thinking of the video Blood Meridian I. What inspired you for these suits?
Pablo: Inspiration come from 50s and 60s, from the country music artists who had these amazing suits called “nudie suits “. I really wished that one day we are owning a suit like that but nobody makes these suits anymore. You can only buy an old one for thousands of dollars and it also has to fit. Actually, at the beginning we are just gonna have white suits, but we thoughts that it will be cool to put all this old stuff like on the nudie suits. So, we thought that is the good time to finally have our nudie suits.
Robin: We kind of make the suits ourselves – we drew everything and then we took it to a local tailor, he was like – oh this is difficult but I can make it work.
Pablo: We searched everywhere for a place, for someone who can make this king of suits but nobody could do it, so we totally do it ourselves.
What are the items that you carry always with you in your suitcase while you are on tour?
Robin: Socks, underwear, belts. I have 2 belts now that they are really special and I think this will be my new thing. That is really hard to find and they are really very expensive. It’s a belt that has a matching leather buckle.
Pablo: I always bring books on tour. 3 or 4 and I read only 1 or 2. I love reading but when we are on tour, you can also choose to not read and go and have fun together instead. Because most of the time is more fun than reading. I am not super sentimental. I do not have a thing that I always bring with me. I had a necklace which looks like the one I wear now… Actually, it’s a sad story, my grandparents died in a car crash 2 years ago. And I got my grandad necklace and I was wearing it all the time but I lost it because I was drunk and wanted to get in the pool and I lost it somewhere. I searched all around and could not find it. That would be the thing that I always carry with me.
What do you listen to in this moment?
Pablo: There are 2 albums that I am listening for the last couple of months: Townes Van Sandt – Our Mother in The Mountain, which is a beautiful record. I think it is one of my favourite record of all the time. And I also listen an album by a French artist, Theo Lawrence. He is very young. I saw him on a festival in Holland, he used to have his band Theo Lawrence and The Hearts which was like pretty cool soul music.
And I saw him lately with his new band which is more country music really good. I was a fan from the first minute when I heard it. When I was in US, I downloaded this album Sauce Picante. And as it was the only album I could play because I had no internet connection in the desert, I play it like a hundred times, maybe more. This album really grew out on me and it became part of this trip. It is really cool.
Robin: Recently I have listened to the Willis Allan Ramsey’s album. it’s an old record. Luca sent it to me. And also, recently I have been listening to Rome an album of Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi. It’s kind of western soundtrack but without a movie and that’s really a winter record for me. When it is cold outside, I put that record on and makes me feel warm again. And I also listen to the new Theo Lawrence record.
And if you would like to do a collaboration who will be your artist
Pablo: There are a lot of cool artists. I think we all would like to work with Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys. Also, with a very young artist, Marcus King, he makes really cool music. And with Theo Lawrence of course.
Robin: We have a lot of friends in Holland who are very good musicians. We always wanted to play with them but it is never the time as we are touring and they are also touring. But we have now this project with 15 people on stage: 3 of us, 4 people from the Dawn Brothers who were on tour with us last time and some of our best friends also. I think it total we have 2 drummers, percussions, I play organ, we have guitars, bass, Pablo is singing, we also have a girl that sings, we have another singer. That’s also a collaboration that we wanted for a long time and now it’s happening.
Pablo: Yes, that’s really cool and also, I think that of course with the internet the world is getting smaller and it’s pretty easy to reach out other artists and do things together. With Theo Lawrence, I speak to him all the time on Instagram and it’s like if I am ever in Holland, let’s record something together.
Next projects?
Robin: There is a documentary coming out, we filmed everything on tour, a making of Tascam Tapes.
Pablo: And I think that we are going to write a new album soon…
In the same way, on tour?
Pablo: Not in the same way. In a previous interview, Luca described all we had to do to record, so we arrived at the venue after few hours of sleep in the van, we were set up all the stuff, we plug in all these cables. You know our back of the van is as big as this coach we are sitting now. So, we were sitting there, I had my guitar, we have the recording stuff here, we have small place around us and when I think of this, I said Oh my god it is too exhausting to record an album in that way. It was a lot of fun but too exhausted. We will probably bring this Tascam Tape on the next tour and record some stuff with it whenever we feel like it.
I am not sure what the next songs are going to be like because we have so many years yet to make music, so to me it will be really fun to make all kinds of different albums.
