Eh, bien nous savons tous que Janvier a toujours mauvaise réputation. Un mois morose, déprimant et sans fin. Et pour y échapper, quoi de mieux qu’une bonne portion de musique pour redémarrer nos cerveaux en plein hibernation. Albums à découvrir, new singles et plein des concerts à mettre sur son agenda. Vous êtes prêts ? Go !
THE LAST INTERNATIONALE – Soul On Fire
Soul on Fire, le deuxième album de The Last Internationale, est sorti en février 2019. Edgey Pires (guitare) et Delila Paz (chant, basse), le duo New Yorkais a beaucoup de chose à nous dire avec un blues – rock brut et intense et des chansons engagées. Après avoir sortie un disque chez Epic, le groupe est redevenu 100% indépendant. Sur l’album, c’est Joey Castillo (Queens of The Stone Age) qui y assure la batterie et succède à Brad Wilk (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave, Prophets Of Rage) qui a joué avec LTI pendant 2 ans. Le producteur exécutif n’est d’autre que Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave, Prophets Of Rage).
Donc avec un tel CV, on peut attendre que l’excellence et c’est le cas. L’album alterne les morceaux énergiques, puissantes et les morceaux plus douces, mélancoliques, l’ensemble dégageant une puissance contestataire, la passion, la colère et la frustration.
L’album commence en force dès l’Intro, dure et lourde, conçu comme le début d’un concert live et nous donne l’impression d’y être. Suit le rugueux et puissant Hard Times – voix engagé, riffs déchaînés et cette rage continue sur Mind Ain’t Free’ brutal est so crazy Rock ‘N’Roll. Try Me, dévoile un autre côté de la voix magnifique de Delila et le titre blues Tempest Blues nous ensorcelle avec son riff hypnotique. Freak Revolution et ses distorsions est un appel à la révolte. Soul On Fire s’ouvre avec un piano doux, et Delila nous offre une magnifique démonstration de son extraordinaire timbre vocal doux et puissant à la fois (entre Joan Jett et Chrissie Heynde).
Hit ‘Em With Your Blues, 5th Generation et le dernier titre Outro, un morceau court a cappella sont toute aussi brillantes.
Il existe aussi un titre bonus Freedom Town, qui est une chanson protestataire contre la politique actuelle des États-Unis et une fois de plus la performance vocale est impressionnante, pleine d’émotion et de puissance.
Vous avez compris Soul on Fire est un superbe album rock énervé, énergique et provocateur, révolutionnaire et passionnant que personnellement j’adore. Le duo se produira en France en février, soyez sûr de ne pas les rater près de chez vous. Et c’est Ion Meunier, le batteur de Shaka Ponk, qui accompagnera le groupe sur toutes les dates françaises.
DEWOLFF – Nothing’s Change
Les Néerlandais DEWOLFF ont sortiTascam Tapes le 10 janvier 2020, un album entièrement écrit et enregistré pendant leur tournée : dans leur van, en backstage ou sur les aires d’autoroute. Les frères van de Poel, Pablo (chant/guitare) et Luka (batterie), ainsi que Robin Piso (orgue Hammond) délivre ainsi un excellent opus funky néo psychédélique et classique rock à souhait. Vous allez avoir l’occasion de les connaitre un peu plus, car j’ai eu le plaisir de les rencontrer en décembre 2019. HIGHLY SUSPECT- Tokyo Ghoul
Les Américains HIGHLY SUSPECT ont sorti en novembre dernier un 3eme album dévastateur (attention dans le bon sens !!!) appelé MCID (My Crew is Dope – l’expression utilisée par le groupe pour décrire son noyau proche d’amis et de fans).
Déjà assez difficile de les faire rentrer dans une case de « genre » musical avec leur 2 albums précédents, ce troisième opus vient nous perturber encore plus et accentuer le doute avec un mélange hallucinant de styles et une créativité sans limite.
La chanson 16, une chanson personnelle plein d’émotion et angoisse et surtout un morceau sans guitares s’installe rapidement en 1ere place du Billboard Modern Rock Chart. D’ailleurs tout au long de l’album le chanteur Johnny Stevens exprime des émotions intenses, des regrets, de la colère et le fait d’apprendre beaucoup sur lui-même. Et ce qui frappe le plus sur cet album, c’est le grand nombre des collaborations : les rappeurs Young Thug(Tokyo Ghoul) et Tee Grizzley (The Silk Road) deux morceaus morceaux résolument hip-hop, ainsi que le groupe de métal français Gojira (SOS) ou Conor Mason de Nothing But Thieves (@tddybear), un mélange défiant tout ce que nous avons pu écouter jusqu’à maintenait et qui rendent l’album très différent des autres.
Qualifié plutôt de groupe blues rock alternatif, HIGHLY SUSPECT – Johnny Stevens, les frères Meyer (Rich et Ryan) accompagnées par un nouveau membre, Matt Kofos, ont clairement voulu se réinventer complétement, essayer des nouvelles approches du rock, en réduisant les frontières avec le hip pop, le new wave ou le métal et faire quelque chose de frais et révolutionnaire. Bien sûr sans oublier leurs guitares caractéristiques, les riffs abrasives et rugueuses mises à l’honneur sur Upperdrugs et Canals.
Pour ceux qui ont raté le concert du Nouveau Casino le 30 Nov 19, Ils seront de retour à Paris le 14/03/2020 au Trabendo.
COUNTERFEIT – THE NEW INSANE
Les anglais de COUNTERFEIT. sortiront leur EP 5 titres en Janvier.
Avec The New Insane, le deuxième extrait, le groupe nous sert une bonne dose d’énergie folle en amuse-bouche.
YUNGBLUD & DAN REYLNOLDS -Original Me
Le jeune prodige de la scène punk rock alternative anglaise, YUNGBLUD s’est allié à DAN REYLNOLDS d’Imagine Dragons pour un morceau explosif – Original Me – un condensé d’énergie indéniablement agressif. Pour se faire une idée sur ce jeune rebelle de 22 ans, il faudra écouter The Underrated Youth – l’EP sorti l’année dernière.
DAVID BOWIE – The man who sold the world
Même s’il est tout le temps dans nos esprits,janvier reste le mois quand on rend hommage à David Bowie qui nous a quitté le 10 Janvier 2016. Le 8 Janvier, date à laquelle il aura célébré son 73 anniversaire, Parlophone Record a annoncé la sortie de deux disques inédits– un EP de 6 titres David Bowie is it any wonder ? et ChangesNowBowie qui sortira en avril 2020 à l’occasion de la Record Store Day. Premier extrait la version acoustique de The man who sold the world enregistré en 1996 est déjà dispo en streaming. Miss you Genius !
EDITORS – Black Gold
La tournée qui accompagne l’album best of d’EDITORS – Black Gold sorti en 2019, commence à Paris le 30 janvier 2020 à la Salle Pleyel. Raison de plus pour l’écouter ou le réécouter en boucle. Pour rappel, Black Gold inclut 13 titres issus des 6 albums studios d’Editors, aux côtés de 3 inédits du groupe : ‘Upside Down’, ‘Frankenstein’ et le sombre ‘Black Gold’. L’album existe également en version Deluxe 2CD, qui inclut un second disque de 8 titres épurés issus du catalogue du groupe, titré : ‘Distance, The Acoustic Recordings’. Ce « best of « est une opportunité de regarder 15 ans en arrière mais offre aussi un aperçu d’un futur excitant pour l’un des groupes anglais les plus endurant et peut-être une des succès story musicale les plus inattendues du 21ème siècle.
BLEEKER –Disaster
Nouveau single pour le canadiens de Bleeker- Disaster . Une ballade rock qui annonce la sortie de l’album Self-Made, déjà disponible en préventes sur les plateformes digitales. Accompagné par une vidéo dans laquelle on découvre le groupe jouer le morceau live, la chanson est construite sur des jolis riffs de guitare et met en avant la superbe voix, profonde et sincère de Taylor Perkins qui parle d’une vie chaotique, pas toujours facile et remplie de joie, qu’il faudra accepter et aller de l’avant. Ensemble avec les deux précédentes chansons dévoilées jusqu’à maintenant, Straight for the Money et Running to the Flames, le groupe nous offre un aperçu d’un album qui promet un son très diversifié.
Five Finger Death Punch – Inside Out
Après l’excellent And Justice For None sorti en 2018 et numéro #1 dans le top des albums Hard Rock/Heavy Métal, le nouvel album de Five Finger Death Punch, F8, arrive le 28 Février ! Avec Plus de 3 milliards de streams et plus de 2 milliards de vues à ce jour, Five Finger Death Punch sont le 3ème plus grand artiste hard rock mesuré par la consommation totale (ventes et streams). Ils sont surpassés seulement par Metallica et AC/DC.
Inside Out, premier extrait du 8eme albumest l’une des chansons les plus personnelles que le groupe a publié à ce jour. Zoltan Bathory, le guitariste de FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, déclare : « Nous avons eu quelques années extrêmement réussies, mais tumultueuses en tant que groupe. Nous n’avons pas seulement résisté à la tempête, mais nous sommes sortis de l’autre côté mieux que jamais. C’était un enregistrement d’un groupe sobre et concentré. Well, we all know that January has a bad reputation. A gloomy, depressing and endless month. And to escape, what better than a good portion of music to reset our brains in hibernation. Albums to discover, new singles and lots of concerts to schedule in our agenda. Ready? Go!
THE LAST INTERNATIONALE – Soul On Fire
Soul on Fire is THE LAST INTERNATIONALE second album, released in February 2019. Edgey Pires (guitar) and Delila Paz (vocals, bass), the duet from New York that have a lot to tell us with raw and intense bluesy rock and committed songs. After releasing a first record at Epic, the band became 100% independent again. On the album, Joey Castillo (Queens of The Stone Age) is performing on drums and succeeds to Brad Wilk (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave, Prophets Of Rage) who played with LTI for 2 years. The executive producer is anyone other than Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, Prophets Of Rage).
So, with such a CV, we can expect an excellent record and it is true. The album alternates energetic, powerful tracks with and softer, melancholy tracks, all revealing a powerful protest, passion, anger and frustration.
The album starts strongly with Intro, hard and heavy conceived as the debut of a live show that gives us the impression of being there with them in the room. Follows the rough and powerful Hard Times. Engaged voice, wild riffs and this rage continue on Mind Ain’t Free so brutal and crazy Rock ‘N’Roll. Try Me reveals another side of Delila’s beautiful voice and the bluesy track Tempest Blues bewitches us with its hypnotic riff. Freak Revolution and its abrasive riffs is a call to revolution. Soul On Fire opens with a soft piano, and Delila offers a magnificent demonstration of her extraordinary vocal ability (between Joan Jett and Chrissie Heynde).
Hit ‘Em With Your Blues, 5th Generation and the latest track Outro, a short a cappella track, are just as brilliant as the others. There is also Freedom Town, a bonus track which is a protest song against current U.S. policy and once again the vocal performance is impressive: full of power and emotion. You understood that Soul on Fire is a superb rock album full of strength, energy, provocative and exciting that I personally adore. THE LAST INTERNATIONALE will perform in France in February, do not to miss them. And it is Ion Meunier, the drummer of Shaka Ponk, who will accompany the band on all French tour dates
DEWOLFF – Nothing’s Change
The Dutch band DEWOLFF released Tascam Tapes on January 10, 2020, an album entirely written and recorded on tour: in their van, in backstage or on motorways. The van de Poel brothers Pablo (vocals/guitar) and Luka (drums), as well as Robin Piso (Hammond organ) delivers an excellent funky neo psychedelic classic rock record. You will have the opportunity to find out more about them because I had the chance to meet the band in December 2019 and has a long and fun discussion. HIGHLY SUSPECT– Tokyo Ghoul
The Americans HIGHLY SUSPECT released last November a devastating 3rd album (attention in the good way !!!) called MCID (My Crew is Dope – the expression by the band to describe its close core of friends and fans).
Already quite difficult to range them in a musical “genre” case with their 2 previous albums, this third one album disturbs us even more and accentuates the doubt with a mind-blowing mix of styles and unlimited creativity.
16, a very personal song, full of emotion and angst and above all, a song without guitars, quickly reached the number 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Charts.
Throughout the album, the singer Johnny Stevens expresses intense emotions, regrets, anger and talk about learning a lot about himself. And what is most amazing about this album is the various collaborations: the rappers Young Thug (Tokyo Ghoul) and Tee Grizzley (The Silk Road) 2 great hip hop style tracks as well as French metal band Gojira (SOS) and Conor Mason of Nothing But Thieves (@tddybear).A mix defying everything we could listen to till now.
Described as an alternative blues rock band, HIGHLY SUSPECT- Johnny Stevens, the Meyer brothers (Rich and Ryan) accompanied by a new member, Matt Kofos, clearly wanted to reinvent themselves completely, try new approaches of rock by reducing the boundaries with hip pop, new wave or metal and to do something fresh and revolutionary. But of course, they did not forget their abrasive and rough characteristic riffs featured on: Upperdrugs and Canals. For those who missed their concert at Nouveau Casino on 30 Nov 19, they will be back in Paris on 14/03/2020 at Trabendo.
COUNTERFEIT – The New Insane
We expect the COUNTERFEIT.’s 5 tracks EP in January. With The New Insane, the second extract, the band serves us a good dose of insane energy in amuse-bouche.

The young prodigy of the English alternative punk rock scene, YUNGBLUD has teamed up with DAN REYLNOLDS of Imagine Dragons for an explosive track – Original Me – an undeniably condensed energy. To get an idea about these 22 years old rebel artist, you need to listen to The Underrated Youth – the EP released last year. He is killing it.
DAVID BOWIE – The Man Who Sold the World
Even though it is always in our minds, January remains the month when we pay tribute to David Bowie, who left us on January 10, 2016. On January 8, when he would have celebrated his 73rd birthday, Parlophone Record announced the release this year of two unreleased discs. EDITORS – Black Gold
The tour that support EDITORS‘ best of album – Black Gold released last year, start in Paris on January 30th at Salle Pleyel. A good reason to listen or re-listen to it over and over again. Black Gold includes 13 tracks from Editors‘ 6 studio albums, alongside with three unreleased tracks from the band: Upside Down, Frankenstein and the dark Black Gold. The album also features a Deluxe 2CD version, which includes a second album of 8 tracks from the band’s catalogue, titled: ‘Distance, The Acoustic Recordings’. This “best of” is an opportunity to look back to the last 15 years but also offers a glimpse to an exciting future for one of the best British bands and perhaps one of the most unexpected musical stories of the 21st century.
BLEEKER –Disaster
New single for the Canadian Bleeker– Disaster. A rock ballad that announces the release of the album Self-Made, already available for pre-sales on digital platforms. Accompanied by a video in which we discover the band playing live, the track is built on pretty guitar riffs and highlighted by the superb, deep and sincere Taylor Perkins voice, who talk about a chaotic life, not always easy and filled with joy, but which has to be accepted and move forward. Together with the two previous songs released so far, Straight for the Money and Running to the Flames, the band offers us a preview of an album that promise a very diverse sound.
FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH – Inside Out
After the excellent And Justice For None released in 2018 and number #1 in the hard rock/heavy metal albums charts, Five Finger Death Punch’s new album F8 arrives on February 28th! With more than 3 billion streams and more than 2 billion views, Five Finger Death Punch is 3rd biggest artist in the hard rock space measured by total consumption (sales and streams). They are surpassed only by Metallica and AC/DC.
Inside Out, the first single from the 8th album is one of the most personal songs the band has released to date. The guitarist Zoltan Bathory says: “We had an extremely successful, yet tumultuous couple of years as a band. We didn’t just weather the storm but came out on the other side better than ever. It was a focused sober group recording, our most important album to date and without a question it shows. This album represents rebirth, progression, transcendence both personally and musically”.
Vocalist Ivan Moody adds: “This record to me is ‘absolution’ – everything I’ve done in my life has led up to this moment”.
They will be touring Europe with Megadeth and Bad Wolves from mid-January with a show in Paris on January 28, 2020 at Zenith.
