Quand je rencontré Josh Raven (chant) et Stephen Beerkens (basse) du groupe Australien, The Faim, en octobre 2018, ils étaient impatients de jouer devant le public français pour la première fois et leur présenter leur EP Summer is a Curse. Depuis la chanson éponyme tourne en boucle sur les radios françaises (NRJ, RTL2, Virgin radio, RFM, Oui FM, Hit West, Alouette) et le quatuor en pleine ascension a sorti leur premier album, State of Mind en Septembre 2019. Et les voila de retour en France pour 2 dates – Toulouse, le 24/11 au Rex et Paris, 25/11 à la Maroquinerie.
J’ai eu le plaisir de discuter avec le guitariste Sam Tye juste avant la sortie de l’album et il nous a révélé beaucoup de choses sur ce premier excellent opus, ses préférences musicales et en matière de mode, et plein d’autre choses. Votre premier album State of Mind (Etat d’Esprit) sort maintenait et donc quel est ton état d’esprit ?
Sam : Bonne question. Je dirais que mon état d’esprit est quelque part entre l’excitation et la nervosité, mais aussi l’accomplissement. Extrêmement excité, parce qu’il est enfin sorti et aussi très nerveux parce que les gens vont l’écouter et évidemment chacun va l’interpréter différemment. Nous voulons que les gens soient intrigués, qu’ils aient une opinion forte sur l’album.
Comment avez-vous choisi les 10 chansons à mettre sur l’album et où l’avez-vous enregistré ?
Sam : Cet album a été un voyage énorme. Il est resté assez longtemps dans la construction : la plus ancienne chanson sur l’album a été écrite il y a environ 3 ans et la plus récente, on l’a écrite il y a 2 mois. Une période assez étendue. La moitié du l’album a été enregistrée au cours des derniers mois. Si vous écoutez l’album, vous entendez vraiment le voyage sonore à travers ces 3 dernières années. Vous entendez la différence entre Infamous qui a été enregistrée il y a 3 ans et Buying Time qui est notre dernière chanson enregistrée. C’était incroyable. La plupart de l’album a été enregistré à Los Angeles, mais nous avons aussi fait quelques enregistrements à Perth et à New York. Ce disque signifie beaucoup pour nous. Ça nous a pris un bon moment de le faire, donc nous sommes heureux de l’avoir maintenant, enfin.

Tu diras quand même que l’album suit un thème du début à la fin ?
Sam : Pas nécessairement parce que l’écriture de l’album a pris 3 ans comme je disais. Et 3 ans c’est long et nous avons tous tellement changé personnellement, mais aussi musicalement. En quelque sorte, l’album a changé de perspective et il change de chanson en chanson mais en même temps, il parle de beaucoup de thèmes communs. Josh écrit les paroles et elles viennent de son cœur.
Human – quelle est l’idée de cette chanson et de la vidéo aussi ?
Sam : Nous sommes tous façonnés par la vie que nous vivons et les gens qui nous entourent, les expériences que nous avons vécu positives ou négatives. Ces choses nous rendent humains : personne n’est parfait, personne n’a raison à 100 % du temps. Nous sommes tous juste humains, nous essayons tous de comprendre ce monde fou que nous vivons. C’est essentiellement de quoi parle cette chanson. Et la vidéo a une histoire différente. Elle ne suit pas nécessairement à la ligne le sujet de la chanson. On voulait tester différentes idées autour de la chanson et la rendre plus cinématographique. Beaucoup de vidéos dans le passé étaient plus basés sur l’histoire de la chanson, donc cette fois nous voulions quelque chose plus cinématographique. Nous voulions vraiment sortir de notre zone de confort et essayer quelque chose de différent. Ce clip est une tentative et je ne sais pas si nous avons réussi, mais nous allons continuer à nous remettre en question.
Il ya une chanson que j’aime qui est différente des autres – Where the River runs.
Sam : Cette chanson est très personnelle pour Josh. Je ne veux pas trop parler en son nom, mais c’est une chanson très importante. Elle vient du point de vue très honnête de Josh. Et oui, elle très différente des autres chansons, une sorte de chanson expérimentale par rapport au reste de l’album. Cela signifie beaucoup pour Josh et c’est une chanson à laquelle les gens pourraient ne pas s’attendre. Et c’est génial que des gens comme toi aiment cette chanson.
Et ta chanson préférée ?
Sam : Il ya quelques-uns sur l’album. Il est difficile de choisir une favorite, mais si je devais choisir, ce serait Buying time ou State of Mind, ce sont les 2 chansons qui riment avec nous quatre et ces chansons sont spéciales par rapport à la façon dont elles ont été écrites. Elles signifient beaucoup pour nous tous de différentes façons.
Quelles sont tes influences musicales ?
Sam: Personnellement, j’écoute beaucoup de musique que mon père avait l’habitude d’écouter, donc beaucoup de rock: Audioslave, Red Hot Chili Peppers et Midnight Oli. En tant que guitariste mon influence serait Tom Morello, Andy Summers et John Frusciante. Ils sont tous des guitaristes étonnants, chacun différent à sa manière. Quelque chose que j’apprécie vraiment à leur sujet, c’est qu’ils savent quand briller, ils rendent les choses simples intéressantes. Ils ont essayé de suivre leur propre chemin et de créer toujours quelque chose de différent. Je suppose que c’est ce que m’inspire quand je les écoute jouer et c’est quelque chose que j’essaie d’incorporer quand j’écris une chanson. J’essaie de créer quelque chose de différent et j’ai encore un long voyage à faire.
Un artiste que tu écoutes en ce moment ?
Sam : Nothing but Thives. C’est un groupe incroyable que j’écoute depuis plusieurs mois maintenant. Le plus récent album Broken Machine c’est génial. Je les écoute sur la route et ils m’influencent dans ma façon de jouer ou d’écrire de chansons. Un grand groupe que je recommande.
Et pour une collaboration, quel serait ton artiste préféré ?
Sam : C’est une bonne question parce que j’ai dit aujourd’hui à Stephen que je voudrais collaborer avec Kevin Parker, de Tame Impala. Ce serait incroyable. Il vient aussi de l’ouest de l’Australie comme nous. Le parcours de Tame Impala est vraiment inspirant. Les chansons qu’ils écrivent sont extrêmement différentes des chansons que nous écrivons donc je pense que ce serait un mélange cool si ça se fera un jour.
Vous avez beaucoup tourné à travers le monde, un lieu qui t’as impressionné le plus ?
Sam : Tous les lieux sont très différents. Chaque spectacle est spécial pour une raison. Nous avons joué un show en Autriche qui était vraiment cool. C’était une très petite salle sous une gare. C’était très fun. Tout le monde était vraiment dans le show. Nous avons pu explorer aussi un peu l’Autriche pendant que nous y étions, ce qui était vraiment bien.
Aussi, quand nous étions à Paris l’année dernière en octobre, c’était très spécial aussi parce que c’était notre dernier spectacle de la tournée mais le premier spectacle à Paris. Quand on va jouer dans un pays pour la première fois, on ne sait pas comment les gens vont réagir. Ça va être bon ou mauvais. Et nous avons joué à Paris et c’était incroyable, nous avons eu un super accueil. Nous avons parlé aux gens après le show et ils ont adoré. Nous sommes reconnaissants.
Quelles chansons vos fans aiment le plus ?
Sam : Summer is a Curse est une chanson très populaire en Allemagne et maintenant en France. Nous recevons beaucoup de réactions quand nous la jouons live. Mais en Australie cette chanson n’est pas très populaire, les gens aiment d’autres chansons comme Amélie. En fait, on a des réactions différentes sur des chansons différentes dans des pays différentes. Et en fonction de cela nous allons construire notre show. Nous jouons en France on va mettre Summer is curse à la fin mais en Australie comme ce n’est pas si populaire, nous allons la jouer au début. Chaque foule est différente et c’est génial pour nous car nous jouons à chaque fois un show différent.
Parlons mode maintenant ! Quels sont tes vêtements préférés dans ton dressing ?
Sam : Brillant ! J’adore la mode. Je peux toujours changer car je suis un fou du shopping. J’acheté de nouveaux vêtements juste pour rafraîchir ma garde-robe. Je suis grand fan de vestes, donc j’en ai quelques-unes. Ma veste préférée est la veste beige que j’ai avec moi en ce moment. Je l’ai acheté récemment et je la porte tout le temps. Aussi des pantalons jaunes avec des grandes poches que j’aime vraiment porter, surtout pour les shows et ils ont la couleur du groupe. Et j’aime aussi mes chaussettes imprimés échecs. J’ai 3 paires en ce moment. En fait, il est difficile de choisir que j’ai tellement de vêtements.
Qu’est-ce que tu as acheté lors de ton dernier shoping ?
Sam : Je n’ai pas trop eu le temps de faire du shopping pendant la tournée, mais dernièrement en Australie j’ai commencé à acheter des bijoux, des bagues et des colliers et aussi des chapeaux. Quelques personnes ont dit que j’ai une tête à chapeaux mais je ne suis pas sûr. J’ai des doutes. Je suis ouvert à essayer de nouvelles choses.
Ton icone mode ?
Sam : La mode pour moi se reflète à travers ce que vous portez. C’est très important et je ne pense pas qu’une façon soit la bonne. Chacun a différentes façons de s’interpréter à travers ce qu’il porte, comme n’importe quoi : tatouages, goût musical. Les choses que les gens portent reflètent leur personnalité.
Eh bien, un artiste que j’admire mais pas nécessairement que je porterais les mêmes choses que lui, mais j’aime sa façon de s’exprimer c’est Jaden Smith. Il porte beaucoup de vêtements magnifiques et intéressants. Et quand j’étais plus jeune, comme 17ans, je suivais beaucoup Matthew Healy de 1975, sa façon de s’habiller. Je portais des jeans skinny noirs et vestes en cuir à cause de son influence massive sur moi. Le noir occupe beaucoup de place dans ma garde-robe.
Vous serez de retour en Europe bientôt
Sam : Oui, nous venons en France pour 2 dates, puis aussi au Royaume-Uni, en Allemagne, en Espagne, en Suisse, nous jouons tout autour. Nous aimons venir en Europe.
Un dernier mot pour les fans en France ?
Sam : Je tiens à leur remercier pour soutenir Summer is a Curse et The Faim – il n’est pas facile de venir d’Australie et de tourner si souvent si le soutien que nous avouns est très apprécié. Et nous espérons qu’ils aimeront State of Mind, le grand voyage tout au long de cet album et nous espérons qu’ils s’identifient à certaines des chansons. Ce serait incroyable !

When I met Josh Raven (vocals) and Stephen Beerkens (bass) of the Australian band, THE FAIM in October 2018, they were eager to play in front of the French audience for the first time and introduce their EP Summer is a Curse. Since then, the eponymous song is playing on repeat on French radios (NRJ, RTL2, Virgin radio, RFM, Oui FM, Hit West, Alouette) and the rising quartet released their first album, State of Mind in September 2019. And they are back in France for 2 dates – Toulouse, 24/11 at Rex and Paris, 25/11 at the Maroquinerie.
I had the pleasure of chatting with guitarist Sam Tye just before the release of the album and he revealed a lot about this excellent debut album, his musical and fashion preferences, and a lot of other things. Discover THE FAIM through these 2 interviews and especially go see their fantastic energy on stage.
Your first album State of Mind came out now and so what is your state of mind?
Sam: Good question. I would say that my state of mind is somewhere between excitement and nervousness, but also accomplishment. Extremely excited, because it is finally out and also very nervous because people will listen to it and obviously everyone will interpret it differently. We want people to be intrigued, to have a strong opinion on the album.
How did you choose the 10 songs on the record?
Sam: This album has been a massive journey. It was a long time in the making: the oldest song on the record was written about 3 years old and the newest one something like 2 months ago, so it’s been a big range! Half of the record was recorded in the last there months. If you listen to the record you really hear the musical journey thought the last 3 years. You hear the difference between Infamous which was recorded 3 years ago and Buying Time which is our last recorded song. It’s been amazing. A lot of the album has been recorded in LA but also in the same time we did a lot of riding over the places like Perth and New York. This record means a lot to us and it’s been a long time coming, so we are glad to have it now finally.
The idea of this song is that we are all shaped by the life we live and the people we are around and you know overtime those experiences we have with the positive or the negative shape who we are. Those things make us human: no one’s perfect, no one is right 100 percent of the time. We are all just human, we are all just figuring out this crazy world that we are living and that’s essentially what music is about.

Will you say that the album follows a theme from the beginning to the end?
Sam: Not necessarily because the writing of the album spends 3 years. It’s a long time, so people change so much during that time. We’ve all changed so much personally but also musically in that time. In a sort, the album changed perspective and sometimes is changing from song to song because it was such a long journey but in the same time it does talk about a lot of common themes. Josh writes the lyrics and a lot of them come from his heart.
Human – tell me more about this song and the video also
Sam: The idea of this song is that we are all shaped by the life we live and the people we are around and you know overtime those experiences we have with the positive or the negative shape who we are. Those things make us human: no one’s perfect, no one is right 100 percent of the time. We are all just human, we are all just figuring out this crazy world that we are living and that’s essentially what music is about. And the video has a different spin on it, it’s not necessarily straight down the line to what to song is about. We wanted to check it different ideas around the song and make it more cinematic. A lot of video in that past were more story based, so we wanted more cinematic. We really wanted to step out from our comfort zone and try something different. This music video is an attempt and I do not know where we succeed or not, but we are going keep challenging ourselves.
There is also a song that I really love – Where the rives run – it’s different from the others
Sam: That song is really personal to Josh. I do not want to speak too much on his behalf about the song, but it’s a very important song. It definitely comes from Josh’ very honest point of view. And yeah, it’s very different from all the others songs, a sort of left field song compared to the rest of the album. It means a lot to Josh and it’s a song that people might not expect. And it’s great that people like you like this song
How about you personally, do you have a favourite song?
Sam: There are a few on the album. It’s hard to choose a favourite but if I had to chose a song it would be Buying time or State of Mind, these would be the 2 songs that will rhyme with four of us and these songs are special because of the way they were written for us. They mean a lot for us in different ways.
What is your musical influences?
Sam: Personally, I listen to a lot of music that my dad used to listen to, so a lot of that is like rock music: Audioslave, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Midnight Oli. Like instrument wise my influence would be Tom Morello, Andy Summers and John Frusciante, they are all amazing guitarists and they are all very different in their own way. Something that I really appreciate about them is that they know when to shine, they make the simples things interesting. They tried to follow their own path and they always tried to create something different. I assume as this is what I get from them when I listen to them playing their music and this is something that I am trying to incorporate when I write a song. I try to create something different and I have a long journey to go.
The artist that you listen in this moment?
Sam: Nothing but Thieves. They are an amazing band. I’ve been listening to them fo 2 months now they are so good as a whole band. The most recent record Broken Machine it’s amazing. They have been influenced me on the road if I am writing stuff or playing thigs. A great band, I do recommend to listen to them.
And for a collaboration, what would be your favourite artist to do?
Sam: That’s a great question because I said today to Stephen that I would like to collaborate with Kevin Parker, from Tame Impala. That would be amazing. He is also from western Australia from where we are from. So just the journey that Tame Impala had over their career is really inspiring. The songs they write is extremely different to the songs we write so I think it would be a cool mixture if this will happen.
You tour a lot, you saw lot of venues around the world, a venue that impressed you?
Sam: All the venues are very different. Every show is special for one reason. We played a show in Austria which was really cool. It was a very small venue, we were playing underneath a railway station which was interesting, it was a real fun show. Everyone was really into the set. We had to explore a bit Austria while we were there which was really fun.
Also, when we were in Paris last year in October, it was very special also because it was our last show on that tour but it was the first show in Paris. When you go playing in a country for the first time, you do not know how people are going to react. it’s gonna be good or bad. And we played in Paris and it was amazing, we had such a great reception. We spoke to the people after the show and they loved it and we were very appreciable for that.
What songs your fans love the most?
Sam: Summer is a curse is a very popular song in Germany and now in France. We get a lot of reaction when we play it live. But in Australia, this song is not very big, people like other songs like Amelie. Actually, you get different reaction from different song, it’s funny because when we play a set we understand, we’ll say ok we play in France today, let’s make Summer is a curse the last song as this is a great song to go out and people can enjoy that. When we are in Australia, we will say ok, as it is not so popular, we will play it early in the set and save the last song for a song that is popular in Australia. Every crowd is different and the great thing is that we play different set every time we go to different continent.
Let’s speak fashion now! What are your favourite items in your wardrobe?
Sam: Brilliant! I love fashion – I can always change as I am a sucker for buying new clothes. I can always buy new clothes just to fresh up the things. I am big fan of jackets, so I have few jackets and my favourite jacket is the tanned beige jacket that I have with me right now. I bought that recently and I wear it all the time.
I have some yellow pants with massive pockets on them which I really like wearing, especially for our live shows and they suit the band colour and I will say my chess socks. I have 3 pairs at the moment. Actually, it is hard to choose as I have so many more.
What did you buy at last shopping?
Sam: I do not have time to shop during the tour but when I have time, I always do some shopping. Actually, I am starting to buy new jewelleries now, like rings and necklaces and hats. A couple of people said that I suit hats but I am not sure. I question it. I do not think I suits bracelets; I never had a bracelet that I really like. I am open to try new things.
Your fashion icon?
Sam: Fashion for me is reflecting yourself through what you wear. It is very important and I do not think that one way is the right way. Everyone has different ways of interpreting themselves through what they wear, like anything: tattoos, music taste, the things that people wear are reflecting their personality.
Well, an artist that I admire, not necessarily that I would wear the same things but the fact that he expresses themselves would be Jaden Smith. He wears a lot of magnificent and interesting clothes.
And when I was younger like 17, I use to follow the Matthew Healy from 1975 style. I use to wear like black shinny jeans and leather jackets because of that, in the period of time he had a massive influence on me. A massive part of my wardrobe is black because if that.

Sam: Yes, we come in France for 2 dates then also UK, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, we are playing all around. We love to come in Europe
