“THE STORIES WE TELL OURSELVES” – The New NOTHING MORE is out today – 15.09.2017

Nothing More’s needed after listening to the brand-new Nothing More’s album “The Stories We Tell Ourselves” out today, 15th of September 2017. I was looking forward to introduce you my new favorite band of this early fall. Well, here we are.

Emerging onto the alternative metal scene in 2003, the four- piece band from San Antonio – Texas (US) – Jonny Hawkins (frontman), Mark Vollelunga (guitar), Daniel Oliver (bass) and Ben Anderson (drums) are not yet so well known in France and Europe but hopefully the new stunning record will change everything.

“The Stories We Tell Ourselves”, and its elegant cover art work, unveil 12 powerful songs linked by 6 interludes, kind of narrative short stories, that give the album the consistency of an opera rock. The whole record, it is an emotional journey – from the first song to the last one- that alternate heavy rhymes and extremely powerful singing to some calm, melancholic and emotional ballads with meaningful lyrics.

The theme is a very actual one – an introspective reflection about how disconnected could be the stories we tell ourselves about reality and reality itself. “That disconnect is a void where suffering and self – frustration often enter our lives” the singer Jonny Hawkins explain.

So looking from this point of view, the short interludes called (Ambition; Destruction), (Convict; Divide) (End; Begin), etc could be also perceived as introductions to the songs pointing out of these contradictions between real- unreal.

The vocals are insane, Jonny’s vocal force explore several registers, the guitar riffs are energetic, the drums beats are crazy rapid. The sound is various, comprised of different elements ranging from hard rock, progressive metal to pop, exploring some new territories as electro and hip-hop beats.

The boys confess they found inspiration in so many different kinds of music and felt it was important to not make the rules about. As about the songs that inspired them, they posted the playlist on Spotify called simply “The Songs That Inspired The Stories We Tell Ourselves”

All tracks were written earlier last year and recorded while the band was on the road and in personal studios, as production duties were often handled by Hawkins and the band themselves.

This is also the first album to feature the new drummer Ben Anderson and this is one of the big change, as previously all drums were written and performed by Jonny Hawkins.

The album open with the interlude (Ambition; Destruction) followed by 2 explosive tracks Do you really want it and Let’em Burn with intensive vocals and guitars parts filled with hard hitting drums, that alternate between aggressive sound and catchy pop rhythms.

The deadly groovy Don’t Stop – reminding some hip-hop beats combined with electronic and furious heavy metal – and the emotive, anthemic and soulful Still in Love, that gives huge goosebumps with its incredible soaring crying chorus. A track of a painful beauty.

Just say when, acoustic song, chilling fabulous vocals is “probably the most sentimental song we’ve ever written and it came at a time when I had these overwhelming feelings of frustration about a past relationship. I needed an outlet to get it all out “said Jonny. The proof that the bad personal experience turned very often into an amazing song.

Funny Little Creatures had a rapid insane pace and an incredible voice while Go to war starts with A Capella voice and burst later into a fierce warrior shout along with an explosion of heavy riffs and electronic beats.

The song was featured on trailer for the War of the Planet of the Apes.

Rippig Me Appart and The Great Divorce are utterly heavy metal tornados. Who We Are and Tunnels are spreading positive vibes while Fade in Fade out is a beautiful personal song, about the relation father and son.

Overall the album is a smart, deep and sombre, evoking sadness, anxiety, failed relationship, demons exhausting but it also brings some shining light and positive emotions.

Fueled by passion, The Stories We Tell Ourselves offers a delightful sound with catchy songs that becomes addictive from the first listening. It’s an album that you can’t afford to miss.

Very close to their fans, Nothing More multiplied the acoustic sessions on Instagram and Facebook introducing each time a new song and also some covers. They already released 5 songs (3 lyrics videos)

Famous for their legendary energetic live shows, they have just kicked off the US tour followed by an European tour and personally, I can’t wait to see them at Les Etoiles in Paris on 05^th of December 2017.

“The Stories We Tell Ourselves”, le tout nouveau et flamboyant album de Nothing More sort aujourd’hui et voilà donc, la bonne occasion de vous parler de mon mega coup de cœur de la rentrée, car quand on écoute du Nothing More on a besoin de Nothing More.

Émergents sur la scène métal alternative en 2003, ls 4 rockers de San Antonio – Texas (États-Unis) : Jonny Hawkins (chant), Mark Vollelunga (guitare), Daniel Oliver (basse) et Ben Anderson (batterie) ne sont pas encore bien connus en France et en Europe, mais ce nouvel excellent opus changera peut être la donne.

« The Stories We Tell Ourselves », l’album à l’élégante pochette rouge blanc noir, présente 12 chansons puissantes, reliées par des 6 interludes (plages musicales) – une sorte de courtes histoires narratives, qui offrent à l’album la consistance d’une opéra rock. L’ensemble, c’est un voyage émotionnel – de la première chanson à la dernière- alternent des sonorités énergiques, très heavy metal, avec des chansons plus chaudes et mélancoliques, accompagnées des paroles éloquentes.

La thématique abordée est bien ancrée dans notre monde actuel – c’est un voyage introspectif, une réflexion sur la manière dont notre perception de la réalité peut être complètement différente et déconnecté de la réalité elle-même. « Cette déconnection de la réalité est un vide par où la souffrance et la frustration peuvent souvent entrer dans nos vies » explique le chanteur Jonny Hawkins.

Donc si on regarde de ce point de vue, les six courts intermèdes appelés (Ambition; Destruction), (Convict; Divide) ou (End; Begin), etc pourraient être aussi perçues comme des intros aux chansons évoquant ces contradictions entre real-irréel.

Le chant de Jonny Hawkins est d’une force incroyable, son registre vocal étant très large et bien rôdé, les riffs de guitare sont énergiques et enragés, accompagnés par une batterie d’une rapidité inouïe.

L’album est varié, alterne entre l’agression hard rock, métal progressif et des rythmes pop entraînantes, le groupe explorant aussi de nouvelles territoires, avec des éléments électro ou hip-hop.

Ils avouaient qu’ils ont trouvé leur inspiration dans différents genres de musique et ils estimaient qu’il était important de ne pas suivre de règles. Les morceaux ont été écrites en début de l’année dernière et enregistrés alors que le groupe était sur la route et dans les studios personnels, Hawkins et sa bande prenant en charge la production.

C’est aussi le premier album du nouveau batteur Ben Anderson et c’est l’un des grands changements, car précédemment, la partie batterie était écrite et interprétés par Jonny Hawkins.

Commençant par les explosives Do you really want it et Let‘em Burn avec des chants percutants, des guitares folles, suivis par la mortelle et groovy – heavy de Don’t Stop et l’émotionnelle, Still in Love avec son refrain époustuflant, d’une beauté douloureuse, attention …papillons dans le ventre.

Just Say When, le morceau acoustique, est « probablement la chanson plus sentimentale que nous n’avons jamais écrite, elle est venue à un moment où j’ai eu cet immense sentiment de frustration sur une relation passée et j’avais besoin d’un moyen pour extérioriser » explique Hawkins. La preuve que les mauvaises expériences personnelles sont toujours transformées en belles chansons.

Funny Little Creatures avec son rythme fou – met en valeur le registre vocal affolant de Jonny. Pareille pour Go To War, le premier single et chanson phare de l’album, qui commence à capella pour éclater ensuite dans un Cri de Guerrier sur des riffs bien accrocheurs. La chanson est présente dans la bande d’annonce du dernier Planète de Singes – Suprématie.

Who We Are et Tunnels sont des chansons plus positives tandis que Rippig Me Appart et The Great Divorce sont complètement turbulentes, des vraies tornades de sonorités métal et électroniques. Fade in Fade out qui clôture l’album, est une belle chanson personnelle qui parle de la relation père et fils.

Vue en l’ensemble est un album profond, sombre et intelligent qui évoquent des relations échouées, l’exutoire des démons, l’anxiété, la tristesse, mais parsemé quand même avec des vibrations plus optimistes. Alimentée par la passion, « The Stories We Tell Ourselves » devient addictif dès la première écoute.

Très proches de leurs fans, Nothing More a multiplié les sessions acoustiques sur Instagram et Facebook pour présenter les nouvelles chansons et quelques reprises.

Célèbres pour leur légendaires shows énergiques, ils viennent de débuter la tournée Aux États Unis et en Europe. Ils passeront par Les Etoiles à Paris, le 5 Décembre 2017. Et ça sera brulant! Il ne faut pas les rater!
