Royal Thunder – New album “WICK” – interview with Mlny Parsonz

Royal Thunder, the 4 Rockers from Atlanta- Georgia, released on 7^th of April 2017 their 3rd album called simply WICK (Spinefarm Records).
First time, I was listening to WICK, I was clearly fascinated by the sublime raspy and haunting voice of MIny Parsonz, their charismatic singer, that made me instantly think of one of my favorite female voice ever, Janis Joplin.

The whole album is a majestic journey into emotionally charged hard rock tracks, starting with the Burning Tree and getting higher and higher in power and energy till the 12th trac, We never fell asleep – an amazing solid performance that enrich of quality at every listening.

Going through the extreme beauty of the harrowing ballad Plans with its gentle sweet guitars and that heart-rending shout “Come back”, the soulful piano lines of Push, the heavy guitars and harder downbeats on The Sinking Chair or Turnaround. And there is Wick, a song of thrilling awesomeness…

All in all, Royal Thunder (Mlny Parsons -Bass/Singer, Josh Weaver- guitar, Evan Diprima- drums, Will Fiore- guitar) deliver an excellent mix of various rock – classic and modern – with some bluesy touch, a subtle craftwork of arty guitars and a flawless voice

I had the great opportunity to have a small chat with MIny Parsonz in Paris about this record and not only.

How are you? First time in Paris?

Mlny : I’m Ok, thank you. No, actually I was walking around the streets telling to myself…I’ve been here before …

Let’s talk about your new album WICK. How would you describe it?

Mlny : It is like a grow up version of us. We’ve come a long way and I think with every album, we see us more comfortable and more mature in our expression of things. It was hard to make it, like every album, but the end result is a good feeling. It was nice to do this again, we were happy.

And this is what we wanted to do. It surprised us. It always does.

You said it was hard to do it. What was the most difficult to do it?

Mlny : : It was me just feeling that I had a lot of things that I wanted to say and trying to find a way to say them. Maybe, in some way, the feeling that I did not have time to do it, as it was something like were off road and then into studio. I usually like to chill out the things and process everything but this album was not about me processing anything. It was more about post process.

It was like, I have already been through these things … what did I learn, what did I gain and what can I give back from my experiences. I’ll never go back to a point where I am soul searching, wondering, left hanging and dangling…

Definitely, it was different for me in that way. I felt like I’ve been somewhere, I am talking about it, but not wondering about it anymore.

Your lyrics are very personal, you are laying your heart bare…

Mlny : This is who I am. I am dangerously trusting at times, but I can also be very guarded. I think that the album does a little bit of both. It is just me being me, being honest and being who I am.

I am in that way and you know, as an artist, creating, it will always be going to crossover into that aspect of my life. It is inevitable. I am always gonna be honest with my music. Something would be lost if I wasn’t honest. This is part of who I am.

Do you have a song which is more important for you?

Mlny: Not really. They are all having their little thing, their little compartment. They are all special to me. I value each one of them, and each one of them was an experience to create them. Being with my band mates, being a part of this band, and all of us together, it is all special.

What can you tell me about WICK? It is an amazing song.

Mlny: Thank you. This song for me was really the cracking of the shell in those moments, when I was really trying to find a way to say the things I wanted to say. I’ve got so much things to say that I was overwhelmed. I don’t know how I get in there and do it, how I make it happen but I know is gonna happen. I do not give up.

Wick was the point that I just checked out, the ultimate frustration.

The idea of calling the album WICK is the idea of “light a wick and you will find the way”. All that darkness will dispel and everything will be exposed. It was like searching and fighting for that flame.

And if you look at the artwork of the album, you can see is all that light fire surrounded by darkness.

But that song doesn’t represent the album. I think it just opens the door.

How did you work to put album together?

Mlny: Instrumentally everything is written except for the piano, cello, things like that are coming after like “sprinkles on a cupcake”. We get all through that part.

I listen to it, I think, I feel things and based on that, I get my lyrics from.

From there, it is a kind of melody coming in and out of it, a kind of dancing, until they connect, like puzzles pieces that come together.

Then we had ideas, spaces that we wanted to fill. It’s a process that we do all together, we are all very much involved at the studio together and practicing and having a good time. The producers are friends also. We collaborate with Joey Jones from the beginning.

It is really like when you were in school, like f***the academic aspect, just hanging out with friends, play music together and having good time. It is always exciting.

You are playing bass, what other instrument do you play?

Mlny: Yes, I play bass, guitar and piano. I’d love to learn to play cello. I’d like to try a lot of string instruments. I’ll give anything a try.

But piano is my favorite for sure.

So do you write music on the piano?

Mlny: Yes, I wrote parts on the piano, but most of my vocals on this album, I wrote on the classical guitar. I listen to the music and just play the guitar till I found a melody that I like and then I will copy it with my voice.

Actually over all, how do you describe your sound?

Mlny: We do not really care in what category we fall into, we are not offended by any category.

It does not really matter but I think, we all agree that it is alternative rock because these is so much that can fit within. We grew up into the 90’s, so it is a part of who we are.

What music do you listen?

Mlny: You open the door of my house, you think an old lady lives there and I listen music like an old lady these days.

I listen to a lot of piano artists, no vocals on it. It is relaxing and soothing. I am happy sitting and drinking a couple of coffees and listening to Latin Jazz. I love Latin Jazz.

I stick to my 5 CDs for a year, just rotate and I enjoy them. I am pretty melo with my music.

How about the tour? For the moment only US dates. Do you plan Europe too?

Mlny: Yes, definitely, it will be a European tour this year. It’s been a while since we were here. We were here just to play to Hell Fest.

Do you have special place where you would like to play on stage?

Mlny: Iceland, mostly because it would be a good excuse to go there. It would be cool to play in Japan also and I think this would be a good experience. I heard a lot of funny and awesome stories.

I’d be happy to play anywhere. I do not care if we play a small or big venue, how many seats we sell or if we reach full capacity.

What can you tell me about your fashion style?

Mlny: Fashion, I definitely view it as an art form. It is like a mood to me. Somedays, I pay attention, I wear what I wear for a reason. It’s a form of self-expression.

The guys are making fun of me saying “you are like a chameleon. One day you are wearing all black and one day you are all wearing white”

I am like this. And somedays, I just wake up and do not care. I just put a jean and T shirt.

I am not a fashion obsessed. I have a lot of clothes and most of them, I have them for years and years.

I do not have a favorite thing apart these dirty old boots that I am wearing since a long time (she shows me her black laced boots)

But I think shoes for me mean something. I put a lot of miles on them and a lot of memories. Sometimes, I have a pair of shoes ready to get rid of them but I said …hey, wait, I went here and there with them… They did a lot of journey through life with me …

Most important for me is being comfortable, especially on stage.

And how about your tattoos?

Mlny: It is the same thing – they matter or not. When I look at them, I can remember where I was, who I was and what I did. How I was doing in my life.

A lot of memories, a lot of histories. I hate most of my tattoos.

Do you have a favorite artist with whom you would like to play on stage or do a collaboration?

Mlny: Klaus Meine from Scorpions. He is pretty amazing. I love Scorpions. They did amazing stuff.

What’s next?

Mlny: We will be touring like crazy and working hard.

Royal Thunder, les 4 rockers d’Atlanta, Georgia ont dévoilé leur 3ème opus intitulé tout simplement WICK (chez Spinefarm Records), le 7 avril 2017.

A la première écoute, j’ai été fasciné par la voix sublime et hantée de Mlny Parsonz qui m’a immédiatement renvoyé à Janis Joplin, ma référence en matière de voix rock féminine.

L’album est un voyage majestueux, chargé d’émotion qui monte en puissance et en énergie au fur et à mesure, en partant de la première chanson Burning Tree jusqu’à la 12eme We never fell asleep .C’est une performance incroyable qui s’enrichit en qualité à chaque écoute.

L’extrême beauté de la ballade poignante Plans – guitares douces, voix exquise (ce cri déchirant Come-back !), les lignes de piano mélancoliques de Push, les guitares noisy et de beats plus hard sur The Sinking Chair or Turnaround…

et WICK une chanson qui donne des frissons…

Dans l’ensemble, Royal Thunder (Mlny Parsons -Basse/Chant, Josh Weaver- guitare, Evan Diprima- batterie, Will Fiore- guitare) offre un large spectre musical, un mélange de rock divers – classique et moderne – avec des accents blues.

Un travail minutieux et subtile, des guitares arty et une voix d’une sensibilité très forte.

J’ai eu l’occasion de rencontrer la charismatique Mlny Parsonz à Paris et discuter musique et autres choses.

Comment vas-tu ? Première fois à Paris ?

Mlny : Ça va, merci. En fait, je suis déjà venue… je me promenais dans les rues en me disant… tiens, je connais. J’ai déjà été ici avant…

Parlons de votre nouvel album. Comment tu décriras WICK ?

Mlny C’est comme la version adulte de nous. Nous avons parcouru un long chemin et je pense qu’avec chaque album, nous sommes devenus plus à l’aise et plus matures dans notre expression des choses.

Il était difficile de le faire, comme tous les albums, mais le résultat final est très bon. C’était agréable de le faire encore une fois et on a été surpris, comme toujours.

Tu dis que c’était difficile de le faire. Pourquoi ?

Mlny : C’était moi. Je sentais que j’avais beaucoup de choses à dire et j’essayais de trouver la meilleure façon de les dire. En quelque sorte, j’ai eu le sentiment que je n’ai pas eu le temps de le faire comme d’habitude, car on a été sur la route et puis toute de suite dans le studio.

J’ai l’habitude de détendre, cogiter les choses, mais ça n’a pas été le cas. C’était comme si, j’ai déjà vécu ces choses… ce que j’ai appris et ce que peux donner en retour de à travers mes expériences. Je ne reviendrai pas là où je recherchais mon âme ou j’avais de doutes. Je sentais que j’ai été quelque part, j’en parle mais je ne me pose plus de questions.

Tes paroles sont très personnelles, tu mets ton cœur à nu…

Mlny Oui, c’est ma façon d’être. Je suis dangereusement ouverte mais je peux aussi être très prudente. Je pense que sur l’album j’étais un peu des deux. C’est juste moi, être moi, être honnête et être qui je suis.

Je suis dans cette voie et un artiste, dans le processus de la création, il va forcément croiser des aspects de sa vie. C’est inévitable. Je vais toujours être honnête avec ma musique, sinon quelque chose sera perdu.

Il ya une chanson qui est plus importante pour toi ?

Mlny Pas vraiment. Elles ont toutes leur petit quelque chose, leur petit compartiment. Elles sont toutes spéciales pour moi. J’apprécie chacune d’entre elles, et chacune a été une expérience de la créer avec mes band mates.

Parles-moi de WICK ? C’est une chanson magnifique.

Mlny Merci. Pour moi, cette chanson a vraiment comme briser la coquille dans ces moments, quand j’essayais vraiment de trouver une façon de dire les choses que je voulais dire.

J’étais à un point où j’avais tellement de choses à dire que j’étais submergée. Je ne savais pas comment le faire, mais je savais que j’allais le faire et que je ne vais pas abandonner.

Donc WICK a été le point de casse, la frustration ultime.

L’idée d’appeler l’album WICK (la mèche de la bougie) veut dire : Allume la mèche/ bougie et tu trouveras le chemin. L’obscurité se dissipera et tout sera exposé. Chercher, se battre pour cette flamme.

On peut voir cette lumière entourée d’obscurité sur la pochette de l’album.

Mais cette chanson ne représente pas l’album. Elle ouvre juste la porte.

Comment avez-vous travaillé ensemble pour construire l’album ?

Mlny Instrumentalement, tout a été écrit sauf la violoncelle et le piano, qui sont venu après comme “la cerise sur le gâteau”.

A partir de là, moi, j’ai écouté, je l’ai senti – c’était une sorte d’aller-retour des paroles jusqu’à ce qu’ils se connectent et se mettent en place comme un puzzle.

Ensuite, nous sommes venus rajouter des choses, remplir les petites espaces.

C’est un processus que nous faisons tous ensemble.Nous sommes tous impliquées dans le studio. Les producteurs sont aussi des amis. On travaille avec Joey Jones depuis le début.

C’est vraiment comme on etait à l’école…. On s’en fiche de l’aspect académique, on veut juste retrouver et s’amuser avec des copains. C’est toujours excitant.

Tu joues à la basse, quel autre instrument tu pratiques ?

Mlny Je joue à la basse, à la guitare et au piano. J’aimerais apprendre à jouer au violoncelle. En fait, je voudrais essayer beaucoup d’instruments à cordes.

Mais, le piano reste est mon préféré.

Donc tu écris de la musique au piano ?

Mlny Oui, j’ai écrit des morceaux au piano, mais la plupart de mes voix sur cet album je les ai écrites sur la guitare classique.

En fait, comment est-ce que tu décriras votre son ?

Mlny Ce n’est pas vraiment important dans quelle catégorie on est classé, mais je pense que nous sommes tous d’accord que c’est du rock alternatif, parce que on peut mettre beaucoup de choses dedans et puis, nous avons tous grandi dans les années 90.

Quelle musique tu écoutes ?

Mlny Si tu ouvres la porte de ma maison, tu penses qu’une vieille dame vive là-dedans et j’écoute de la musique comme une vieille dame. J’écoute beaucoup de musique de piano. C’est relaxant et apaisant. Je suis heureuse de m’assoir et de boire 2 -3 tasses de cafés et d’écouter du Latin Jazz. J’aime le Latin Jazz.

Et puis, je me tiens à mes 5 CD que je fais tourner en boucle pendant une periode. Je suis assez mélancolique avec ma musique.

Pour la tournée il y a que des dates aux US. Prévoyez-vous des dates en Europe ?

Mlny Oui, certainement, il y aura une tournée européenne cette année. Ça fait un moment qu’on n’a pas joué ici. Nous étions à Hell Fest.

As-tu un endroit particulier ou tu aimerais chanter ?

Mlny En Islande, principalement parce que ce serait une bonne excuse pour y aller. Ce serait cool de jouer au Japon aussi et je pense que ce serait une bonne expérience. J’ai entendu beaucoup d’histoires drôles et géniales.

En fait, je serais heureuse de jouer n’importe où, grande ou petite salle. Peu importe combien de billets nous avons vendus.

Parlons un peu de la mode. Quel est ton style ?

Mlny Je considère la mode comme une forme d’art. C’est comme un état d’esprit pour moi.

Il ya des jours quand je fais attention.Je porte ce que je porte pour une raison. C’est une forme d’expression de soi.

Les gars rigolent en me disant : « Tu es comme un caméléon. Un jour tu t’habilles toute en noir et le jour suivant toute en blanc »

C’est comme ça. Mais, il ya des jours quand je ne me soucie pas. J’enfile juste un T-shirt et un jean.

Je ne suis pas obsédée par mode. J’ai beaucoup de vêtements mais la plupart, je les ai depuis longtemps.

Je n’ai pas de truc préféré appart ces vieilles bottes usées que je porte depuis longtemps (elle me montre ses bottes noires lacées).

Je pense que les chaussures pour moi signifie quelque chose parce que j’ai fait beaucoup de kilomètres avec et donc, j’ai beaucoup de souvenirs. Parfois, j’ai une paire de chaussures que je suis prête à mettre à la poubelle mais je me dis, hey, attend … je suis allée ici et là avec eux… Ils ont fait beaucoup de voyage avec moi à travers ma vie…

En fait, le plus important pour moi est d’être confortable, surtout sur scène.

Et tes tatouages ?
Mlny C’est la même chose : ils sont importants ou non. Quand je les regarde, je me souviens où j’étais, qui j’étais et ce que je faisais dans ma vie.

Beaucoup de souvenirs, beaucoup d’histoires. Je déteste la plupart de mes tatouages.

As – tu un artiste préféré avec lequel tu aimerais chanter ou faire une collaboration ?

Mlny Klaus Meine de Scorpions. Il est magnifique. Il a fait des choses assez incroyables. J’adore les Scorpions.
