BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE- Heavy Metal invasion at Casino de Paris – Gig Review 06.11.2018

Le Heavy Metal s’invitait au Casino de Paris, le 6 novembre 2018, avec Bullet for My Valentine et leurs guests. La formation britannique présentait leur 6eme album, Gravity, sorti le 29 juin 2018 (dont je vous ai déjà parlé ici lors de l’interview avec le très sympathique batteur Jason Bowld).

Si le jour de concert j’ai vérifié plusieurs fois le lieu de concert car le très beau et cosy Casino de Paris me paraissait un lieu assez improbable pour accueillir une un concert de métal, je n’ai pas fait de même en ce qui concerne les horaires de la soirée.

Et là, j’avoue, je l’ai bien regretté car en arrivant à la salle peu avant 20 h, j’apprends que les 2 groupes d’ouverture SHVPES et Nothing More ont déjà joué. Beh oui, j’auras du me rendre compte qu’une soirée qui compte 4 concerts commence après le five o’clock tea et non après l’apéro.

Bref, méga contrariée, je prends place au joli balcon rouge doré du théâtre, en espérant que ce qui va suivre va enlever un peu de ma déception. Premier constat, le balcon est archi plein ainsi que la fosse, et il fait hyper chaud.

Enfin, 3 -ème groupe de la soirée, Of Mice and Men, démarre et l’ambiance est sympa, le public est déjà bien motivé même si au balcon quasiment tout le monde est assis.

Les tentatives de se lever sont accompagnés par les protestations de ceux derrière qui ne voient plus rien. Typique pour les petits théâtres. Le gars devant moi semble mesurer 2m donc s’il se lève, je crains le pire.

Mais revenons au concert de Of Mice and Men, un group que je voyais pour la première fois sur scène et que j’ai vraiment apprécié. Un son de tonnerre, un front man très communicatif et souriant. Un show très puissant, des riffs muscles, le quatuor californien plait à la foule. Les headbangers à côté de moi, même assis, ils sont hyper actifs !

Petite pause qui nous laisse du temps pour admirer le magnifique foyer du Casino de Paris, boire 1 litre d’eau (ou de bière) et enlever la dernière couche possible de vêtements, avant de regagner nos places. Le fond de la scène est drapé d’un énorme tissu imprimé avec les ailes de papillon, le artwork de la pochette de Gravity.

Et voilà que les Gallois démarre en trombe avec Dont Need You suivi par Over it, les deux extraits du nouvel album. La scène est magnifique, de carrés lumineux baignées par des jeux de lumières stroboscopique. Le son est excellent aussi. Prévue que les théâtres parisiens ont une bonne acoustique même pour les concerts rock (seule la climatisation laisse à désirer).

Les musiciens sont en grand forme : Matt Tuck (voix et guitare) habillé d’ blouson en cuir, jean slim clair et casquette fait excellent tandem avec Jamie Mathias (voix et bass), Michael Padget à la guitare, enchaîne de riffs sulfureux quant à Jason Bowld, très souriant, il envoie l’artillerie lourde derrière son kit – solo batterie remarquable au milieu du concert.

Même si la line-up du groupe n’est plus la même (seulement Matt et Michael sont des membres d’origine depuis 20 ans), ces gars fonctionnent super bien ensembles, l’expérience en live ça se voit. Les performances sont impeccables.

L’excellente set list alterne les nouveaux morceaux de Gravity (Letting You Go, Not Dead Yet ou Piece of Me) avec le plus anciens, qui reçoivent un accueil plus fort du public (4 Words, Tears don’t Fall, The Last Fight, Venom). Une très bonne balance aussi entre les pièces nerveuses et ceux plus calmes. A noter No Way Out en début de rappel avec SHVPES, en invités.

Conclusion, les Bullet’s offre un show ultra puissant, super pro, sans aucune fausse note, dans un lieu mythique.

Bravo aussi à la foule enthousiaste qui s’est donné à fond en pit (avec des crowd surfing ou Circle Pits) et au balcon ( et merci au gars devant qui s’est levé 3-4 fois pour prendre des photos – et j’ai fait de même)

Soirée d’exception.

Heavy Metal was invited to the Casino de Paris, on November 6, 2018, with Bullet for My Valentine and their guests. The British formation introduced their 6th album, Gravity, released June 29, 2018 (you remember, I’ve already talked here in the interview with the drummer Jason Bowld).

If I checked several times the venue’s address because the very beautiful and cozy Casino de Paris seemed an unlikely place to welcome a heavy metal gig, I did not do the same thing with the gigs debut and I was completely wrong.

Arriving at the theatre shortly before 8 pm, I realize that the 2 opening bands SHVPES and Nothing More have been already performed. Hmmm, I should have thought that an evening lining up 4 bands starts after the five’ o’clock tea and not after the happy hours.

Well, briefly, mega upset, I take my seat at the lovely red- golden balcony, hoping that what will follow will make me forget my disappointment.

First notice, the balcony is full and the pit also, and it is very hot.

So 3rd concert of the evening starts and Of Mice and Men took the stage. The crowd is already hot but at the balcony almost everyone is sitting. All attempts to stand resulted every time with the cries of the people behind because they can’t see anything. Normal for the small venues like this. The guy in front of me seems to be 2 meters height, so I imagine the worst.

Well, back to the concert of Of Mice and Men, a band that I saw for the first time live and I really enjoyed. A sound of thunder, a smiling communicative front man. A very powerful show, energetic riffs, the Californian quartet pleases the crowd. The headbangers sitting next to me are hyper active!

Short break letting us the time to admire the beautiful Casino de Paris hall, to drink 1 litre of water or beer and remove the last possible layer of clothes, then returned to our seats.

The back of the stage is draped with a huge cloth butterfly wings printed, the Gravity’s cover artwork.

And here it is, the Welsh starts with Dont Need You followed by Over it, the two extracts from the new album. The scene is wonderful, bright squares bathed by strobe lights. The sound is excellent too. This prove that the Parisian theatres have good acoustics even for the rock concerts (only air conditioning is missing).

The musicians are in great shape: Matt Tuck (Vocals and Guitar) wearing a leather jacket, clear slim jean and cap make great tandem with Jamie Mathias (vocals and bass), Michael Padget on guitar, sent blowing mind riffs and Jason Bowld, smiling all the time, sends heavy artillery behind his drum kit – remarkable skilful solo in the middle of the show.

Although the line-up of the band is no longer the same (only Matt and Michael are original members for 20 years) these guys are working well together, the live experience is obvious. The performances are impeccable.

The set list alternates the new tracks from Gravity (Letting You Go, Not Dead Yet or Piece of Me) and older songs, which received a stronger welcome from the public (4 Words, Tears don’t Fall, The Last Fight, Venom). A very good balance between nervous tracks and some slower ones. Note No Way Out with SHVPES in guests.

Conclusion, the Bullets perform an ultra-powerful and flawless show in an amazing mythical place.

Congratulations also to the enthusiastic crowd in the pit alternating the mosh pits, crowd surfing and circle Pits or seating and headbanging!( and thanks to the guy in front of me who only stands 3 or 4 times in order to take pictures as I also did )
