Pour sa troisième édition, le Download Festival Paris, nous a donné rendez-vous de nouveau sur la Base Aérienne 217 à Brétigny-sur-Orge au Cœur de l’Essonne, du 15 au 18 Juin 2018. 77 artistes d’une qualité exceptionnelle, de grosses têtes d’affiche, des groupes en pleine expansion, de belles découvertes, il a été difficile de faire son choix entre le 4 scènes – 2 grandes main stage 1 et 2, une 3 ème plus petite aménagé sous une tente -Warbird – et une 4 ème minuscule -Spitfire- ainsi qu’une 5 -ème scène aménagé dans le camping.
Un weekend prolongé intense où le soleil et la bonne humeur ont été au beau fixe. Les festivaliers ont pu bénéficier pleinement de concerts mais aussi des nombreuses attractions, de la cuisine internationale et des boutiques proposant de articles rock. On a pu se balader entre les containers – avions ou se reposer sur des palettes ou de vieux pneus improvisés en banquettes.
Ce fut un marathon du bon son rock métal mais aussi de l’élégance, des costumes, de magnifiques décors et des effet spéciaux. Voilà mon parcours.
Vendredi, je commence la journée avec alternance death metal – rock progressif des suédois d’OPETH. Mikael Åkerfeldt et ses acolytes, experts dans la matière, enchaînent entre des sonorités dures et épaisses, des voix hurlées ou claires, des passages atmosphériques et des orchestrations progressives devant un public assez conquis.
Rapidement, je me dirige vers la Warbird pour voir UNDEROATH, un groupe typique de la vague metalcore des années 90s. Le combo visiblement content d’être là pour démarrer leur tournée européenne, enchaine de titres pleins d’énergie, des riffs alléchantes, des mélodies et des arrangements électroniques avec un chanteur hyper dynamique et de musiciens talentueux.
Place à la grande messe de GHOST. Devant la scène aux allures imposante de cathédrale, les suédois sont venus présenter leur nouvel album Prequelle, tout fraichement sorti le 1er juin. A l’occasion, les géants du métal dévoilent la nouvelle incarnation de leur chanteur, Tobias Forge en Cardinal Copia, masqué, en costume noir et veste en queue de pie, élégance et théâtralité, son regard et sa curieuse façon de parler font froid dans le dos.
On découvre donc en live un grand parti du nouvel album que le Cardinal Copia qualifie de « very pornographic », des chansons comme Ashes, Rats, Faith, Dance Macabre ou Miasma avec Papa Emeritus Zero invité sur scène pour un solo de saxophone. L’album Meliora est présent aussi avec He Is, Circe ou From the Pinnacle to the Pit et EP Pop Star avec Square Hammer.
Impressionnante présence scénique des 7 ghouls – 2 guitares, basse, batterie, synthés, chœurs – et leurs masques argentés, qui portent aussi des costumes noirs élégants. Une voix unique, entre la pop et le heavy metal, un concert hallucinat qui s’inscrit dans mes préfères du festival.
OZZY OSBOURNE, le headliner de la journée, fait son apparition sur la scène. Deux écrans géants de rectangulaires flanquent un écran géant en forme de croix dans le centre de la scène. Après le décor cathédral de Ghost, c’est décidemment la journée ambiance spécial l’église.
Ozzy en grande forme enchaine les refrains cultes, les grands classiques incontournables de Black Sabbath ( Fairies Wear Boots, War Pigs ou Paranoid) ou de son répertoire solo depuis 1980 – Crazy Train, Mr. Crowley, Bark At The Moon, No More Tears.
Des gesticulations, de la folie, de la générosité et de l’entrain, un seau d’eau sur sa tête, sur les fans et même sur le caméraman et sa caméra – la légende Ozzy, voix sans faille, assure du début à la fin.
Il est accompagné à la guitare par son ami et guitar hero, le flamboyant Zakk Wylde et son quilt qui livre plusieurs solos dont un très long devant le front stage. Remarquable également le solo de batterie de Tommy Clufetos.
Un show mémorable qui marque les esprits et heureusement Ozzy nous rassure que ce n’est pas sa tournée d’adieu. Il sera sur scène jusqu’à sa mort.
J’attaque le samedi avec NOTHING MORE sur la mini scène Spitfire. Les Texans se surpassent et offre un show pure dynamite sous un soleil de plomb. Morceaux heavy ou des balades, du gros métal et de passages électro, des refrains catchy qui attitre une foule de fans. L’espace devant la scène s’avère très petit. Comme à son habitude le front man, Jonny Hawkins, torse nu, saute non-stop, s’agite et monte sur le curieux engin – la machine à faire du son, « le Scorpion tail ». Il n’oublie pas de remercier les fans pour leur soutien sans lequel ils ne seront pas arrivée jusqu’à là.
Go To War, Don’t Stop, Do you really Want It fade in Fade Out – album nommé au Grammy Awards The Stories We Tell Ourselves, paru en septembre 2017 et mis à l’honheur. Excellent.
THRICE – joli mais très court show des américains de sur la Warbird, belles mélodies, guitares distordues, synthés – un beau mélange de leur riche discographie et également le nouveau single The Grey.
NOFX arrivent avec leur punk rock déjanté made in Los Angeles. Fat Mike, crête rose, lunettes roses et robe turquoise, très bavard et hilarant, Eric Melvin à la guitare l’accompagne joyeusement. Des hits au programme comme Murder The Governemnt et Leave it Alone mais aussi la reprise de Joe Dassin –Champs-Elysées.
Dans mon agenda suivent les suédois d’AVATAR qui nous invite dans Avatar Country, le titre de leur 7 -ème album. Redingotes militaires inspirés de l’armée suédoise, maquillage smokey à la Kiss et Alice Cooper et style Joker-Clown, pour le chanteur Johannes Eckerstorm. Jonas Jarisby alias The King et ses sujets attirent une grande foule devant la Main stage 2, décoré royalement pour l’occasion en jaune et rouge.
Rencontrés plutôt dans la journée, le roi en personne et ses acolytes Tim Öhrström et Henrik Sandelin m’expliquent que cela leur prend environ 1 heure pour se préparer- habillage et maquillage compris avant chaque concert. Plus de secrets du royaume bientôt.
The King welcomes you in Avatar Country, Bloody Angel, The Eagle Has Landed, Smells Like a Freakshow, les morceaux explosives s’enchaines, entre le heavy metal puissant et les refrains groovy et mélodiques, les jets de feux, superbe prestation scénique, théâtrale, des grimaces et belle communication avec le public. L’audience est en délire. Mon show préféré de la journée.
La fin de la soirée, je la partage entre Meshuggah et Marylin Manson.
Grimaces crispées, lumières stroboscopiques, fumée, ambiance obscure, hurlements, apocalypse sonique, Meshuggah fait bien honneur sa réputation pour le dernier concert de la soirée sur la scène Warbird. Les Suédois, (beh oui encore !), qui me sont chaudement recommandés par leurs compatriotes d’Avatar infligent du death-metal effréné, des riffs distorsionés, de frappes mega puissantes, une artillerie lourde qu’on aura du mal à oublier.
MARYLIN MANSON, l’headline de la deuxième soirée, mystère et beaucoup de fumés, le Révérend du métal, interprète son dernier album Heaven Upside Down dont Kill 4 You en faisant monter des fans sur scène. Et bien évidement ses classiques Rock is dead, The Dope Show, Sweet Dreams et Antichrist Superstar.
Ma journée chargée de dimanche commence avec THE NOFACE.
La lionne Oma Jali et les musiciennes masqués ex- Skip The Use originaires de Lille, démarrent les concerts sur le Main Stage 1. Energie débordante, excellente communication, sourires et déhanchements, la chanteuse est tout simplement magnétique. Les français enchainent les morceaux de leur premier album Chapter One sorti en 2017. Show hyper dynamique, excellent son et belle ambiance.
THE STRUTS prennent place sur Main Stage 2. Sexy glam Rock N’ Roll, les anglais délivrent un show qui électrise le public. Le Frontman charismatique Luke Spiller, habillé en costume orange, veste à franges, haut pailletés, se rappelle que leur premier succès l’ont connu en France et remercie les fans pour leur fidélité. Des morceaux de leur album Everbody Wants mais aussi 2 nouvelles chansons Fire et Body Knows, single sorti un jour plutôt, nous donne un avant-gout d’un deuxième album tant attendu.
On passe au rayon indie pop-rock alternatif avec les londoniens de WOLF ALICE. La voix angélique de la jeune et gracieuse Ellie Rowsell oscille entre force et fragilité. Entourée par de musiciens talentueux, le concert est un mélange de son grungy, des guitares rugueuses avec des atmosphères plus éthérées et intimistes. Un show propre avec de morceaux tantôt psychédélique tantôt bouillonnantes.
De nouveau la Suède à l’honneur avec le Rock N Roll déluré de ROYAL REPUBLIC qui se surpassent en élégance avec des vestes pailletées dorés, la banane Elvis pour le chanteur Adam Granh ou le brushing du guitariste, Jonas Almen. Complicité, communication et drôleries, un show festif, irrésistible et dansant. La foule est chaude et en délire.
Des morceaux comme Underwear, When I See You Dance with Another, Baby, Addictive (une version acoustique hyper fun qui amuse la foule), Tommy Gun et même une reprise de Metallica, Battery – le groupe se déclare de grands fans de métal.… Des refrains géniaux qui plaisent à la foule, tout le monde est en train de se déhancher frénétiquement. Ils seront concurrencés un peu plus tard dans la soirée par les compatriotes de THE HIVES.
Place au phénomène punk rock britannique, FRANK CARTER & THE RATTLESNAKES. Le chanteur couvert de tatouages porte un simple d’un caleçon aussi coloré que ses tatouages lance des regards fous à l’audience qui l’accueille avec de grandes ovations.
Carter nous régale de mélodies abrasives qui monte de plus en plus en puissance. Communication permanente avec le public, on oublie presque sa musique et on fait plutôt attention à ses indications à la foule comme celle de former circle pit géant, sans oublier de demander d’aider ceux qui tombent et pas leur marcher dessous – côtes cassés garanties. Il ne maque pas d’exécuter également de son habituelle marche sur la foule. Un show d’une rare intensité qui ravi le public.
DEAD CROSS – le nouveau super groupe formé par Mike Patton de Faith No More, et le batteur de Slayer – Dave Lombardo adopte un style brutal trash et très noisy, des vocales hurlés mélangés avec de drums puissants et rapides.
Sur le Main Stage, c’est le tour des THE HIVES. Voilà donc les autres scandinaves stylés de la soirée. Costumes noirs et blancs et garage rock euphorique, énergie communicative et bonne humeur, le chanteur Pelle Almqvist bouge en long et en travers de la scène, il descend saluer les fans- Walk Idiot Walk ou Tick Tick Boom ne manquent pas de faire le délice de la foule.
Très jolie découverte avec Ego Kill Talent, les brésiliens de Sao Paulo invités au Download Paris pour la deuxième fois consécutive. Et ils ont déjà leurs fans. Energie et puissance mélodiques, le quintette envoie de riffs bien gras et une voix forte. A suivre.
FOO FIGHTERS – les headliners de samedi délivrent un show de presque 2h30 heures, avec un Dave Grohl très à l’aise niveau communication avec le public. Il parle après presque chaque chanson. Tour à tour il présente ses musiciens. Taylor Hawkins, son fameux batteur -chanteur a le droit d’interpréter plusieurs chansons dont Under Pressure de Queen en compagnie de Luke Spiller de The Struts.
Set list construite autour de leur nouvel album Concrete and Gold avec Run et The Sky is a Neighborhood sans oublier les mega hits comme The Pretender ou Monkey Wrench ou MY Hero.
Niveau reprises, il entame plusieurs hits comme Another One Bites the Dust de Queen ou It’s So Easy de Guns N Roses en affirmant qu’il ne connaissait pas toute la chanson, pour finir avec la reprise surprenante d’Imagine de John Lennon avec les paroles de Jump de Van Halen.
Un show maitrisé devant un public hyper réactif.
Je démarre la dernière journée avec JONATHAN DAVIS qui est là pour présenter son projet solo, Black Labyrinth. Accompagné par une multitude des musiciens – contrebasse, violon, clavier, le chanteur charismatique de Korn propose une aventure sonore bien différente : de chansons catchy comme le single What It Is et des extrais de la BO du film La Reine des Damnés. Un show épuré qui nous plonge dans des ambiances sonores captivantes.
La tente de Warbird est bien remplie et s’avère trop petite pour la foule qui vient voir le phénomène GRETA VAN FLEET. Le jeune quatuor de Michigan attaque directement avec le tube Highway Tune, et même s’il y a un petit souci avec le micro, donc on ne peut pas entendre l’intro impressionnante de la chanson, le problème est vite réglé et le foule est tout de suite charmée.
Le trois frères Kiszka (Josh au chant, Jake à la guitare, Sam à la basse), accompagnés par leur ami Danny Wagner à la batterie, habillés en hippie chic – longue tunique pour le front man, veste brodée pour Jake, gilet frangé pour Sam enchaînent les titres de leur EP- From The Fires : Flower Power, Edge of Darkness, Black Smoke Rising ou Safari Song.
Trop souvent comparé à Robert Plant de Led Zeppelin, la superbe voix aigüe de Josh laisse l’audience bouche bée. Riffs incendiaires, basse rhythmique, clavier, frappes effrénées, les jeunes rockers offrent une excellente performance qui a visiblement plu énormément au public. Prochain passage en France prévu pour le 26 octobre à L’Élysée Montmartre.
Après le concert, je rencontre Sam qui me confirme que malgré la tournée très intensive, leur premier album est en préparation et la sortie est prévue pour cette année. Interview bientôt.
C’est le tour de sud-africains de Seether de jouer sur la scène Warbird devant de nombreux fans impatients et hyper excités. Post-grunge et rock alternatif, riffs puissants et distorsions, un set plein d’énergie et d’émotion, un beau mélange de leur 8 albums dont le dernier en date de 2017 –Poison The Parish. Un show un peu trop court pour l’audience.
Et pour clôturer le marathon rock – heavy metal sur la base aérienne qui mieux que les Guns N’Roses.
Le groupe d’Axl Rose, Slash et Duff McKagan étaient de retour en France, 1 an après une Stade de France comble.
En grande forme, les californiens ont enflammé la Main Stage avec plus de 3 heures de show avec un set list impeccable qui a compris tous leurs grands hits.
Tous les classiques ont passées par là de Welcome to the Jungle, Chinese Democracy, You Could Be Mine, November Rain ou encore Don’t Cry et Paradise City mais aussi de reprises de Bob Dylan – Knockin’ on heaven’s door, des Wings – Live and let die, l’hommage au défunt Chris Cornell, le chanteur du groupe Soundgarden, avec Black Hole Sun ou Wish you Were Here de Pink Floyd.
Au programme les délicieuses solos de Slash, lunettes noires et chapeau habituel, la voix d’Axl Rose qui a quand même un peu perdu de son éclat surtout sur de chansons comme Sweet Child O Mine ou Paradise City.
Bandana rouge autour de la tête, lunette de soleil, jeans déchirés et chemise à carreaux attachée autour de la taille, le chanteur changera de vestes en cuir et de chapeaux plusieurs fois dans la soirée.
Une conclusion impressionnante pour un Download Festival 2018 qui a illuminé une fois de plus notre passion pour le bon son rock avec des performances époustouflantes. Merci et à l’année prochaine !

For this third edition, the Download Festival Paris, invited us again to the AIR Base 217 at Brétigny-sur-Orge in Essonne, France from 15 to 18 June 2018.
77 great artists, big headliners, bands in full expansion, great discoveries, it was difficult to choose between the 4 stages – two Main stages 1 and 2, a 3rd one under a tent – Warbird, a 4th tiny one – Spitfire – as well as a 5th stage in the campsite. The Sun and the cool mood was there and festivalgoers were able to take full advantage of concerts but also of international cuisine or shops offering a large range of Rock N roll items. We were able to walk between planes decorated containers or to relax on benches crafted of pallets or old tires.
Here it is my 4 days journey.
Friday, I start the day with death metal – progressive rock mix of the Swedish band OPETH. Mikael Åkerfeldt and his acolytes, experts in the subject, struggle together between hard and thick sounds, screamed or clear voices, atmospheric passages and progressive orchestrations, a blend that conquered the audience.
Rapidly, I’m heading to the Warbird to see UNDEROATH, a typical early 1990s metal core wave band. Obviously happy to be there to start their European tour, the combo delivers a performance full of energy, sharp riffs, melodies and electronic arrangements with a hyper dynamic singer and talented musicians.
Place to the big mass of GHOST. The stage looks like an imposing Cathedral. The Swedes came to present their new album Prequelle, freshly released on 1st of June. On the occasion, the metal Giants unveil the new incarnation of their singer Tobias Forge in Cardinal Copia who is hidden behind a mask and makeup. He is wearing a black suit, jacket tail coat, elegance and theatricality, his gaze and way of talking chill up our spine.
We could discover in live a large part of the new album that the Cardinal Copia calls “very pornographic”, songs like Ashes, Rats, Faith, Dance Macabre or Miasma with Papa Emeritus Zero invited onstage for a saxophone solo. The Meliora album is also present with He Is, Circe or From the Pinnacle to the Pit and EP Pop Star with Square Hammer.
Impressive stage presence of 7 ghouls – 2 guitars, bass, drums, synths, chorus – and their silver masks, there are also wearing elegant black costumes for girls and boys. A unique voice, a powerful and amazing show, a sound between pop and heavy metal, a fantastic gig. One of my favourites of the festival.
OZZY OSBOURNE, the headliner of the day, arrives on stage. Two giant rectangular screens flank a giant cross-shaped one in the centre of the stage. After Cathedral setting of Ghost’s show, it is definitely special church day atmosphere.
Ozzy in great shape performs the refrains cults, the classical Black Sabbath –Fairies Wear Boots, War Pigs or Paranoid or his solo hits since 1980 – Crazy Train, Mr. Crowley, Bark At The Moon, No More Tears.
The gesticulations, madness, generosity and spirit, a bucket of water on his head, on fans and even the cameraman and his camera – the legendary Ozzy, imperial vocals, ensures from beginning to end.
He is accompanied on the guitar by his friend and guitar hero, the flamboyant Zakk Wylde and his cult quilt that delivers several solos including a very long one in front stage. Remarkable also the Tommy Clufetos ‘s drum solo. A memorable show that marks the spirits and luckily Ozzy reassures us that this isn’t his farewell tour. He will be performing until his death.
I attack Saturday with NOTHING MORE on the tiny stage Spitfire. The Texans offer a pure dynamite show under a blazing sun. Speed songs or ballads, heavy metal and electro passages, catchy choruses that receives a big fan appreciation. The space in front of the stage is quite small for the crowd came to see them. Shirtless as usual, the front man Jonny Hawkins, jumps nonstop, stirs and climb on the curious machine to make sound – the Scorpion tail.
He does not forget to thank the fans for their support, without whom they will not be there. Go To War, Don’t Stop, Do you really Want It, Fade in fade Out – the album nominated for Grammy Awards “The Stories We Tell Ourselves”, realised in September 2017 is privileged. Excellent.
THRICE – great but short show of Americans on the Warbird- beautiful melodies, distorted guitars, synths – a nice mix of their rich discography and also a new single The Grey.
NOFX arrive with their crazy punk rock made in Los Angeles. Fat Mike, pink hair, pink sun glasses and turquoise dress, very chatty and hilarious joined happily by Eric Melvin on guitar. Hits to the program as Murder The Government or Leave it Alone, but also the cover of Champs-Élysées by Joe Dassin.
On my schedule follow the Swedes of AVATAR who invites us in Avatar Country, the title of their 7th album. Military frocks inspired of the Swedish army, smoky eyes Alice Cooper’s style and Joker-Clown make up for the singer Johannes Eckerstorm. Jonas Jarisby alias “The King” and his subjects attract a large crowd in front of the Main stage 2, settled royally in yellow and red for the occasion.

The King welcomes you in Avatar Country, Bloody Angel, The Eagle Has Landed, Smells Like a Freakshow, explosive tracks between the powerful heavy metal and the groovy melodic choruses, fireworks, theatrical performance, faces and good communication with the public. The audience is going crazy. My favourite show of the day.

Faces clenched tightly, strobe lights, smoke, dark atmosphere, growl vocals, sonic apocalypse, Meshuggah does honour their reputation for the last concert of the evening on stage Warbird. The Swedes, (Yes again!), highly recommended by their compatriots of Avatar inflict death-metal frantic riffs, a heavy artillery drums. A mega powerful show that will be hard to forget.
MARILYN MANSON, the headline of the second evening, mystery and a lot of smoke, the Reverend of metal perform his latest album Heaven Upside Down including Kill 4 You with fans invited on stage. And of course, his classic Rock is dead, The Dope Show, Sweet Dreams and Antichrist Superstar.
Busy Sunday starts with THE NOFACE. The lioness Oma Jali and the ex-Skip the Use musicians hidden behind their masks start the concerts on the Main Stage 1. Boundless energy, excellent communication, smiles and swaying, the singer is simply magnetic. The French band perform the tracks of their debut album Chapter One released in 2017. Hyper dynamic show, excellent sound and beautiful atmosphere.
THE STRUTS are taking place on Main Stage 2 – Sexy glam Rock N’ Roll, the English delivers a show that electrifies the audience. The charismatic Frontman Luke Spiller wearing an orange suit, fringed jacket, sequined top, remembers that their first success was in France and thank the fans for their loyalty. Song of their album Everbody Wants – Kiss This or Could have been me but also 2 new songs Fire and Body Knows, a single released one day before gives us a taste of a so expected second album.
We switch to the alternative indie pop-rock sound with the Londoners of WOLF ALICE. The angelic voice of the young and graceful Ellie Rowsell oscillates between strength and fragility. Surrounded by great musicians, the concert is a blend of grungy, rough guitars with more ethereal and intimate atmospheres.
Again, the Sweden to honour with the crazy craziness Rock N Roll of ROYAL REPUBLIC who excel in elegance with golden glittering jackets, Elvis banana hair for the singer Adam Granh or blow-drying of the guitarist Jonas Almen. Complicity, fun, a festive, irresistible and dancing show. The crowd is warm and cheering.
Songs like Underwear, When I See You Dance with Another, Baby, Addictive (an acoustic super fun version that amuses the crowd), Tommy Gun and even a Metallica cover, Battery, the band declare themselves being big fans of metal… Great choruses that appeal to the crowd, everyone is trying to wiggle wildly. They will be competed later in the evening by their compatriots of THE HIVES.
It’s the tour of the British rock punk phenomenon, FRANK CARTER & THE RATTLESNAKES. The singer covered by tattoos wearing just a colourful boxer is welcome with great ovations. Carter feast us on abrasive melodies that grow more and more in intensity. Ongoing communication with the audience, we almost forget his music and focus our attention to his instruction to the crowd to form giant circle pit, without forgetting to ask to help those who fall down and not walk on them – sides broken guaranteed. A show of rare intensity that thrilled audiences.
DEAD CROSS – the new super band formed by Mike Patton of Faith No More, and the drummer of Slayer – Dave Lombardo offered a very noisy, brutal trash style, screamed voice mixed with fast and powerful drums.
On the Main Stage, it’s the turn of the THE HIVES. So here it is the other Scandinavian stylish band of evening. Black and white suits and euphoric rock garage, infectious energy and good mood, the singer Pelle Almqvist is moving across the scene or it comes down to greet the fans – Walk Idiot Walk or Tick Tick Boom never fail to make the delight of the crowd.
Very nice discovery with Ego Kill Talent, the Brazilians of Sao Paulo invited to Download Paris for the second time in a row. They have already their fans. Melodic energy and powerful sound, the quintet sends greasy riffs and loud vocals. To be followed.
FOO FIGHTERS – the headliners on Saturday, deliver a show of almost 2:30 hours, with a Dave Grohl very communicative with the audience, he speaks after almost every song. One by one, he presents his musicians. Taylor Hawkins, his famous drummer – singer has the right to perform several songs including Under Pressure by Queen in the company of Luke Spiller of The Struts. Accompanied by a multitude of musicians – contrabass, violin, keyboard, the charismatic singer of Korn offers a very different sound adventure, with catchy songs as the single What It Is and also some tracks of the film Queen of the Damned soundtrack. A sleek show that plunges us into exciting soundscapes.
The Warbird tent is too small for the large crowd who comes to see the phenomenon GRETA VAN FLEET. The young quartet of Michigan attack directly with the tube Highway Tune, and even if there is a small problem with the microphone, so we can’t hear the impressive intro, the problem is solved quickly and the crowd is immediately charmed.
The three Kiszka brothers – Josh on vocals, Jake on guitar, Sam on bass accompanied by their friend Danny Wagner on drums, dressed in hippie chic – long tunic for the front man, jacket embroidered for Jake, fringed waistcoat for Sam, perform songs of their EP From The Fires: Flower Power, Edge of Darkness, Black Smoke Rising or Safari Song.
Too often compared to Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, the great voice of Josh blew the audience away. Perfect rhythmic, keyboards, incendiary riffs, frantic strikes, the young rockers offer an excellent performance. Total success.
Their next gig in France is scheduled for 26 October at the Elysee Montmartre.
After the concert, I met Sam Kiszka who confirms that in spite of the very intensive tour, their first album is in preparation and the release is scheduled for this year. Interview coming soon.
It’s the turn of South Africans from SEETHER to play on stage Warbird in front of many impatient and excited fans. Post-grunge and alternative rock, powerful riffs and distortions, a set full of energy and emotion, a nice mix of their 8 albums including the latest one released in 2017 – Poison The Parish. The show is a little bit too short for the audience, that obviously would like to have more.
And to close the marathon rock – heavy metal on the air base 217 what better than GUNS N’ ROSES.
The band of Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan are back in France, 1 year after the awesome show on Stade de France. In great shape, the Californians put the fires on the Main Stage with over 3 hours show, with an impeccable set list including all of their hits.
All the classics have been there: Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child O’ Mine, Chinese Democracy, You Could Be Mine, November Rain, Don’t Cry, Night train and also the covers of Bob Dylan – Knockin’ on heaven’s door, Wings – Live and let die and the tribute to Chris Cornell, the lead singer of Soundgarden with Black Hole Sun and also Johnny B. Goode and Wish you were here by Pink Floyd.
In the programme the great Slash’s solos, wearing black glasses and usual hat, the voice of Axl Rose that lost some intensity that we can hear especially on songs like Sweet Child O’ Mine or Paradise City.
Red bandana around his head, sunglasses, torn jeans and tied plaid shirt around the waist, the singer change of several leather jackets and hats.
An awesome conclusion for an intense Download Festival 2018 that once again, lit up our passion for rock with some breath-taking performances.
