DURAN DURAN- Fabulous in Berlin, Max-Schmeling-Halle, 27/06/2025, Concert Review

Si vous êtes grand fan de DURAN DURAN (comme moi !), vous n’êtes pas sans savoir que le groupe britannique n’a pas mis les pieds dans une salle de concert parisienne (ou française) depuis bien longtemps (le concert au Gala AmfAR à Cannes de cette année ne compte pas, évidemment !).

Néanmoins, le groupe New Wave – New Romantics iconique des années 80s tourne quasiment en continu et tous les ans, j’essaie de le rattraper quelque part dans le monde.

Cette année, j’ai décidé de faire escale à Berlin, ville que je n’avais pas visitée depuis 2016 (à l’époque c’était pour un concert d’EDITORS).

Bref, alors que je m’apprêtais à écrire le live review pour vous partager mes impressions du concert berlinois, Surprise ! Surprise ! la nouvelle est tombée : DURAN DURAN sera en concert à Paris, au Zenith, le 21 octobre 2025 ! ENFIN !!!

Fondée à Birmingham en 1978, DURAN DURAN sort le premier album éponyme en 1981. Rapidement surnommés les « Fab Five » ( les Fab Four était le Beatles) : Simon Le Bon (Chant), Nick Rhodes (Claviers), John Taylor (basse), Roger Taylor (Batterie) et Andy Taylor (Guitare) enchaînent les albums, les concerts et connaissent un succès fulgurant.

A partir de 1985, au fils des années le groupe connait plusieurs lines up avec les allées et les venus des nouveaux ou d’anciens membres pour qu’enfin se réunir de nouveau dans la formule originale en 2002. Alors qu’Andy quitte le groupe en 2006, Duran Duran devient un quatuor et le reste jusqu’à aujourd’hui.

Plus que 100 millions de disques vendus dans le monde, 16 albums studio en total, des nombreux singles dans le top 10 les charts USA ou UK, le groupe s’est imposé comme l’un des groupes mythiques les plus influents de l’histoire de la musique : The Killers ou Franz Ferdinand se disent influencés par DURAN DURAN. Lady Diana était l’une de leur plus grand fan.

A chaque album, les Anglais ont su se réinventer et se renouveler en restant toujours à la pointe de l’création artistique : des projets de plus en plus innovants qui mêlent parfaitement la musique à la mode, à l’art (vous comprenez mieux maintenant le nom de notre site) ou les nouvelles technologies.

Ils ont révolutionné l’industrie du vidéo clip dans les années 80, l’époque glorieuse du MTV, ils ont créé leur propre style de musique et de mode, ils ont introduit des effets visuels jamais vu auparavant.

Mélodies accrocheuses, synthés entêtants et rythmiques contagieuses, DURAN DURAN a connu des hauts et des bas dans leur carrière sans jamais disparaitre du firmament musical. Ils ont continué avec passion et engagement à faire vibrer les fans fidèles de la première heure mais aussi attirer les nouvelles générations.

Des projets parallèles, des collaborations… il y a tellement de chose à dire, mais je vais m’arrêter là car le but de cet article était quand même de vous parler du concert à Berlin ! Et vous donner un petit aperçu de ce qui va se passer à Paris en octobre prochain. RECIT :

Le 27 juin, direction donc au Max-Schmeling-Halle à Berlin, l’une des plus grandes arènes couvertes de la capitale allemande. Une salle emblématique avec une capacité d’accueil, en format concert, allant jusqu’à 12 000 personnes (9000 personnes pour des évènements sportifs) située à proximité du célèbre Mauerpark, une ancienne zone frontalière entre Berlin-Est et Berlin-Ouest qui a été transformée en un parc très sympa.

En arrivant, on aperçoit le fameux camion Duran Duran, magnifiquement décoré avec les pochettes des albums du groupe, garé devant l’entrée des artistes et évidement on s’empresse pour prendre de photos. C’est encore tôt (18h30) mais des nombreux fans sont déjà sur place.

La mission d’ouvrir la soirée revient à LOBSTERBOMB, un jeune groupe berlinons que Simon Le Bon adore et qu’il vient présenter en personne sur scène. Il faut savoir que Simon anime une émission qui s’appelle “Whooosh!, sur la radio américaine SiriusXM et régulièrement, il fait découvrir aux auditeurs ses nouveaux artistes préférés. Et les Allemands en font partie.

LOBSTERBOMB évolue dans un univers indie glam punk très énergique. Le groupe nous présentera un show d’environ 30 minutes ultra dynamique. Des extrais de leur premier album Look Out sorti en 2023, un nouveau single Not Again, extrait d’un futur nouvel album actuellement en préparation. Même si la salle est loin d’être remplie, le groupe se donne à fond pour chauffer le public. Une véritable bombe énergie ! Très heureux et ému, le quatuor nous avoue que c’est la première fois qu’ils se retrouvent devant un public aussi nombreux. Leurs efforts seront récompensés par de chaleureuses applaudissements. Un groupe très prometteur à suivre de près !

Deuxième groupe ce soir, SOPHIE AND THE GIANTS monte sur scène à 20h. Cette fois, c’est plutôt du electro-pop- disco très dancing qui semble plaire à beaucoup de monde, même si le public dans la fosse reste assez timide. Dans les gradins, autour de nous, il y a quelques fans qui connaissent les chansons par cœur et chantent avec ardeur.

La belle et puissante voix de la charmante Sophie Scott résonne parfaitement dans la salle. Accompagné par ses 2 compères aux claviers et à la batterie électronique, elle nous offrira une performance vitaminée et séduisante. Sans être fan du style, je retiens le groovy Hypnotized et le nouveau single A Little Bit Wild qui fera bouger un plus le public dans la fosse.

Petite pause et on profite pour découvrir la salle. C’est spacieux, très agréable et facile à circuler. Les files d’attente au bar sont raisonnables, cependant le stand de merchandising est pris d’assaut, car tout le monde souhaite repartir avec un souvenir.

Des gens de tous les âges, vêtus de T-shirts Duran Duran de toutes les époques arrivent de plus en plus nombreux. La salle est quasiment pleine maintenait et tout le monde est de bonne humeur et s’impatiente que le concert démarre. Certains sont venus comme nous de très loin (on entend autour de nous UK, Islande).

Peu après 21h, c’est enfin le tour de DURAN DURAN. L’intro atmosphérique de Velvet Newton retenti et le groupe apparait en images de synthèse sur l’écran gigantesque situé derrière la scène.

Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Roger Taylor et Simon Le Bon semblent se trouver dans un vaisseau spatial futuriste qui atterrit sur terre et puis d’un coup, un nuage de fumée et ils apparaissent, tous les quatre au milieu de la scène, en haut d’un grand escalier illuminé. On dirait qu’ils ont surgi directement du vaisseau. Le public hurle à plein poumons dans une ovation impressionnante. Spectaculaire !

Un fois que les 4 membres du groupe prennent place derrière leurs instruments, ils seront rejoints par les musiciens de tournée : Dom Brown à la guitare et deux choristes Anna Ross et Rachel O’Connor (de temps en temps le saxophoniste Simon Willescroft fera des passages bien remarqués).

Le coup d’envoi est donné avec le sombre Nightboat et sa mélodie obsédante, morceaux extrait de leur premier album éponyme sorti en 1981.

Et puis, la batterie martèle, la basse vibre, le puissant synthé résonne et la voix rugi « Wild Boys ! Wild Boys ! » ! C’est le triomphant et si reconnaissable The Wild Boys qui rendra les fans hystériques ! Tout le monde s’affole !

Le son est parfait, l’interprétation est sublime et les effets visuels sont époustouflants. Du Grand Duran Duran ! Frissons garantis !

Le flamboyant Hungry Like a Wolf sera accueilli avec une explosion de joie et sera repris par toute la salle en adoration. Et comme si ce n’était pas suffisant en ce début éclatant, voilà le thème de James Bond et le fameux A View to A Kill et son clavier emblématique. La chanson coécrite avec John Barry pour le 14eme James Bond incarné par Roger Moore va déclencher une nouvelle énorme vague d’enthousiasme.

Inutile de continuer à vous raconter chaque chanson car vous avec compris, la cadence, l’énergie du groupe et l’enthousiasme du public ne faibliront pas une seule seconde. C’est incroyable !

Notorious, All She wants is, Reach up for the Sunrise, les tubes se succedent. C’est clair que Duran Duran mise ce soir plutôt sur les hits d’années 80 et 90 avec seulement quelques incursions dans les albums plus récents Danse Macabre sorti en 2023 avec le revisité Lonely in Your Nightmare / Super Freak ou l’excellent Future Past sorti en 2021 avec le morceaux Invisible.

Simon est fun et très en forme. Il s’adresse très souvent au public évoquant même des souvenirs de leur premier concert à Berlin qui n’était pas si extraordinaire, car il parait que le public ne réagissait pas du tout…ce n’est pas le cas ce soir, car la salle vibre d’enthousiasme à chaque morceau et le chanteur est visiblement très content.

DURAN DURAN électrise Berlin avec un show de 2 heures à couper le souffle.

Beaucoup d’émotion lors de l’interprétation d’Ordinary World dédié aux habitants de Gaza, d’Israël, d’Ukraine.

Pour interpréter Come Undone, Simon invitera l’un des choristes, Anna Ross pour l’accompagne à la voix et le résultat est juste merveilleux.

L’électrisante Careless Memories provoque toujours autant de frissons avec sa partie keyboards hallucinante et ses riffs incendiaires. Cette chanson reste toujours ma préférée en concert.

Des superbes projections vidéo artistiques accompagne chaque chanson. J’aurais aimé aussi voir des images des musiciens sur les écrans. Ça nous aurait aussi permis de les voir de plus près et d’admirer leur élégance toujours aussi fabuleuse.

Simon Le Bon se changera plusieurs fois. À son pantalon blanc il associera une chemise noire élégante, une veste blanche ou un T-shirts à l’effigie du groupe. John Taylor associera à son pantalon en cuir rouge d’abord une chemise noire changé contre le T – Shirt « Imagine Peace » , T Shirt de l’exposition Yoko Ono « Dream Together » qui se déroule en ce moment à la Neue Nationalgalerie de Berlin (une exposition qu’on recommande fortement si vous êtes dans le coin).

Nick Rhodes est toujours aussi flamboyant et séduisant dans son costume noir, un blouson façon perfecto avec un soupçon de rose au niveau des fermetures éclair. Appareil photos à la main, «The Controller » (comme il est surnommé) profite de temps en temps pour prendre des photos de ses camarades ou du public (j’aimerais beaucoup voir ces photos un jour Mr Rhodes !!!). Alors que Roger Taylor arbore toujours son élégance classique dans son complet look noir !

Le set principal se clôture avec les fans favorites les mighty hymnes légendaires : Planet Earth (ou le frontman prend le temps de présenter tous les musiciens dont le classique « Play that Fucking bass John » lors de la présentation de John Taylor. Lui-même se présentera à la façon de James Bond : « Je m’appelle Bon, Simon Le Bon »).

Les explosives The Reflex et Girls on Film (ce dernier mélangé parfaitement à un extrait de « Psycho Killer » de TALKING HEADS, occasion pour Simon de nous montrer son impeccable phrasé en français) seront entrecoupé par le dantesque White Lines (Don’t Don’t Do It) la cover de (Grandmaster Melle Mel) que personnellement j’adooore ! C’est de la Folie !

Pour le rappel, le magnifique Save a Prayer sera jouée sous une mer de torches de téléphone. Simon attrapera une guitare acoustique et va demander au public de chanter le refrain. Le résultat est magnifique. Et la fin sera laissé à Rio, avec les entêtantes synthés de Rhodes, la basse vibrante de Taylor J, les frappes magiques de Tayor R mixé et la voix toujours aussi puissante de Le Bon.

Ce soir, DURAN DURAN électrise Berlin avec un show de 2 heures à couper le souffle. Un set list parfait, un condensé des hits toujours aussi catchy et toujours, interprétés avec une énorme énergie et passion par des musiciens charismatiques toujours au top. Inoubliable !

Un virtuose du clavier (Nick), un maestro de la basse (John), l’as de la batterie (Roger) et un chanteur inégalable (Simon), toujours une parfaite complicité entre les membres légendaires du groupe. Rejoints par de musiciens de tournée super talentueux, (mentionne spéciale pour Dom Brown excellent à la guitare), DURAN DURAN forme une grande et admirable famille qui donne tout sur scène.

Elégance, enthousiasme, perfection : DURAN DURAN est toujours au sommet de son art après 47 ans de carrière! Fantastique !

Le public berlinois a vibré à l’unisson de début à la fin et sort de la salle sur un nuage de bonheur. Bravo et Merci ! Duranie ? Yes! Always Duranie !

If you’re a big fan of DURAN DURAN (like me!), you know that the British band hasn’t set foot in a Parisian (or French) concert hall for a long time (the concert at this year’s AmfAR Gala in Cannes doesn’t count, obviously!).

Nevertheless, the iconic New Wave – New Romantics band of the 80s is playing almost continuously and in consequence, every year, I try to catch up with them somewhere in the world.

This year, I decided to stop in Berlin, a city I hadn’t visited since 2016 (at the time it was for an EDITORS concert).

Anyway, while I was about to write the live review to share with you my impressions of the Berlin concert, Surprise! Surprise! Breaking News DURAN DURAN will do a concert in Paris, at the Zenith, on October 21, 2025! FINALLY!!!

Founded in Birmingham in 1978, DURAN DURAN released the self-titled debut album in 1981. Quickly nicknamed the “Fab Five” (the Fab Four was the Beatles): Simon Le Bon (Vocals), Nick Rhodes (Keyboards), John Taylor (Bass), Roger Taylor (Drums) and Andy Taylor (Guitar) released albums one after another, performed lots of concerts and enjoyed dazzling success.

From 1985, over the years, the band has had several lines up with comings and goings of new or old members till reunite again in the original formula in 2002. While Andy left the band in 2006, Duran Duran became a quartet and remains so until today.

More than 100 million records sold worldwide, 16 studio albums in total, huge number of singles in the USA or UK top 10 charts, the band has established itself as one of the most influential mythical bands in the history of music: The Killers or Franz Ferdinand say they are influenced by DURAN DURAN. Lady Diana was one of their biggest fans.

With each album, the English have been able to reinvent and renew themselves and always remaining at the forefront of artistic creation with innovative projects that perfectly mix music with fashion, art (you understand the name of our website better now ) and new technologies.

They revolutionized the music video industry in the 80s, the glory days of MTV, they created their own style of music and fashion, they introduced visual effects never seen before.

Catchy melodies, mesmerising synths and contagious rhythms, DURAN DURAN has experienced ups and downs in their career without ever disappearing from the musical firmament. They have continued with passion and commitment to thrill the loyal first hour fans but also to attract the new generations.

Side Projects, collaborations… there is so much to say but I’ll stop there because the purpose of this article was to tell you about the concert in Berlin! And give you a little glimpse of what will happen in Paris next October. So, here it is:

On June 27, head to the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, one of the largest indoor arenas in the German capital. An iconic venue with a capacity of up to 12,000 people (9000 people for sporting events) located near the famous Mauerpark, a former border area between East and West Berlin that has been transformed into a very nice public park.

When we arrive, we see the famous Duran Duran truck, magnificently decorated with the covers of the band’s albums, parked in front of the artists’ entrance and of course, we hurry to take pictures. It’s still early (6:30 p.m.) but many fans are already there.

The mission to open the evening goes to LOBSTERBOMB, a young band from Berlin that Simon Le Bon loves and that he comes to introduce himself on stage. You should now that Simon hosts a show called “Whooosh!”, on the American radio SiriusXM and regularly, he introduces listeners to his new favourites artists. And the Germans, they are part of it.

LOBSTERBOMB evolves in a very energetic indie glam punk universe. The band will present us an ultra-dynamic show of about 30 minutes. Songs out of their first album Look Out released in 2023, a new single Not Again, taken from a future new album currently in preparation. Even if the room is far from being full, the group gives its all to warm up the audience. A real energy bomb!

Very happy and moved, the quartet admits that it is the first time that they have found themselves in front of such a large audience. Their efforts will be rewarded with warm applauses. A very promising band to follow up closely!

The second band tonight, SOPHIE AND THE GIANTS, takes the stage at 8 p.m. This time, it’s more of a very dancing electro-pop-disco that seems to please a lot of people, even if the audience in the pit remains quite shy. In the stands, around us, there are few fans who know the songs by heart and sing ardently.

The beautiful and powerful voice of the charming Sophie Scott resonates perfectly in the room. Accompanied by her 2 companions on keyboards and electronic drums, she will offer us a vitaminized and seductive performance. Without being a fan of the style, I note the groovy Hypnotized and the new single A Little Bit Wild which will make the audience move a little more in the pit.

A short break and we take the opportunity to discover the venue. It’s spacious, very pleasant and easy to get around. The queues at the bar are reasonable, however the merchandising stand is crowded as obviously, everyone wants to buy a souvenir of this special event. In Berlin , it looks that also they did not perform for 12 years.

People of all ages, dressed in Duran Duran T-shirts from all eras are arriving in increasing numbers. The venue is almost full now and everyone is in a good mood and impatient for the concert to start. Some came from far ( like us) around us fans from UK or Iceland.

Shortly after 9 p.m., it is finally DURAN’s turn. The atmospheric intro of Velvet Newton sounds and the band appears in computer generated images on the gigantic screen behind the stage.

Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Roger Taylor and Simon Le Bon seem to be in a futuristic spaceship that lands on earth and then, suddenly, a cloud of smoke and they appear, all four of them in the middle of the stage, at the top of a large illuminated staircase. It looks like they came straight out of the ship. The audience screams at the top of their lungs in an impressive ovation. Spectacular!

Once the 4 members of the band take their places behind their instruments, they will be joined by the touring musicians: Dom Brown on guitar and two backup singers Anna Ross and Rachel O’Connor. From time to time saxophonist Simon Willescroft will make some notable passages.

The kick-off is given with the dark Nightboat and its haunting melody, tracks taken from their first eponymous album released in 1981.

And then, the drums pound, the bass vibrates, the powerful synth resonates and the voice roars “Wild Boys! Wild Boys! » ! It’s the triumphant and so recognizable The Wild Boys that will make fans hysterical!

The sound is perfect, the perfoemance is sublime, and the visual effects are breathtaking. The Greatness of Duran Duran! Thrills guaranteed!

The flamboyant Hungry Like a Wolf will be welcomed with an explosion of joy and will be sang along by the whole room in adoration. And as if that wasn’t enough for this dazzling beginning, here is the James Bond theme and the famous A View to A Kill and its emblematic keyboard. The song co-written with John Barry for the 14th James Bond played by Roger Moore will trigger a new huge wave of enthusiasm.

No need to continue telling you about each song because you have understood, the cadence, the energy of the band and the enthusiasm of the audience will not weaken for a single second. It’s unbelievable!

DURAN DURAN electrified Berlin with 2 hours of breathtaking new wave – pop rock show!

Notorious, All She wants is, Reach up for the Sunrise, the hits follow one another. It’s clear that Duran Duran is betting tonight on the hits of the 80s and 90s with only a few songs from the more recent albums Danse Macabre released in 2023 with the revisited Lonely in Your Nightmare / Super Lonley Freak or the excellent Future Past released in 2021 with the track Invisible.

Simon is fun and very fit. He addresses the audience very often, even evoking memories of their first concert in Berlin which was not so extraordinary, because it seems that the audience did not react at all… This is not the case tonight, because the room vibrates with enthusiasm at each song and the singer is very grateful.

A lot of emotion during the performance of Ordinary World dedicated to the people of Gaza, Israel and Ukraine.

To perform Come Undone, Simon will invite one of the backup singers, Anna Ross to accompany him on vocals and the result is just wonderful.

The electrifying Careless Memories still causes chills with its hallucinating keyboard part and its incendiary guitar riffs. still my favourite in live concert.

Stunning artistic video projections accompany each song. I would have liked to see images of the musicians on the screens too. It would have allowed us to see them up close and admire their elegance as fabulous as ever.

Simon Le Bon changed several times. To his white pants he will combine an elegant black shirt, a white jacket or a T-shirt with the band’s effigy. John Taylor will first combine his red leather pants with a black shirt changed for the “Imagine Peace” T-Shirt, the T-shirt from the Yoko Ono exhibition “Dream Together” which is currently taking place at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin (an exhibition that we highly recommend if you are in the area).

Nick Rhodes is as flamboyant and seductive as ever in his black suit, a perfecto-style jacket with a hint of pink at the zippers. Camera in hand, “The Controller” (as he is nicknamed) takes the opportunity from time to time to take pictures of his bandmates or of the audience (I would love to see these photos one day Mr. Rhodes !!). While Roger Tayloris classic elegant in his complete black look!

The main set closes with the fans favourites of the legendary mighty anthems: Planet Earth (where the frontman takes the time to introduce all the musicians including the classic “Play that F***ing bass John” during John Taylor’s presentation. He introduced himself in the manner of James Bond: “My name is Bon, Simon Le Bon”).

The explosive The Reflex and Girls on Film (the latter perfectly mixed with an excerpt from “Psycho Killer” by TALKING HEADS, an opportunity for Simon to show us his impeccable phrasing in French) will be interspersed with the Dantesque White Lines (Don’t Don’t Do It) the cover of (Grandmaster Melle Mel) that I personally looove it! Crazy Crazinessy!

As an Encore the magnificent Save a Prayer will be played under a sea of telephone torches. Simon grabs an acoustic guitar and asks the audience to sing the chorus. The result is magnificent. And the end will be left in Rio, with the awesome synths of Rhodes, the vibrant bass of Taylor J, the magic strikes of Taylor R mixed and powerful voice of Le Bon.

Tonight, DURAN DURAN electrified Berlin with 2 hours of breathtaking new wave – pop rock show. A perfect set list, a compendium of hits always as catchy and always, performed with enormous energy and passion by charismatic musicians always at the top. Unforgettable!

A keyboard virtuoso (Nick), a bass maestro (John), the ace drummer (Roger) and an incomparable singer (Simon), always a perfect complicity between the legendary members of the band. Joined by super talented touring musicians, (special mention for Dom Brown excellent on guitar), DURAN DURAN forms a big and admirable family that gives everything on stage.

Elegance, enthusiasm, perfection: DURAN DURAN is still at the top of his game after a 47-year career! Fabulous!

The Berlin audience vibrated in unison from start to finish and left the hall on a cloud of happiness. Congratulations and thank you! Duranie? Yes always Duranie!

So, who is coming to Paris on October 21st? Tickets go on sale on July 11, 2025 at 10 a.m.
