Guns N’Roses, Slash’s Snakepit, Velvet Revolver, Slash Ft. Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators, tous ces groupes/projets remarquables ont un guitariste-compositeur prolifique en commun: SLASH !

A peine terminé la tournée avec SMKC (dont le dernier concert s’est déroulé au Zenith de Paris le 29 avril 2024) que le guitariste légendaire se retrouve de nouveau à la une de l’actualité rock avec son 6 ème album solo, sorti le 17 mai 2024 via Gibson Records.

Un opus qui peut paraitre surprenant, car avec Orgy Of The Damned, Slash déclare son amour passionnel pour le blues.

Tout comme pour son album éponyme sorti en 2010, sur Orgy Of The Damned, le musicien s’est entouré de invités de marque au chant : Brian Johnson (AC/DC), Beth Hart, Chris Stapleton, Iggy Pop, Paul Rodgers, Gary Clark Jr, Billy F. Gibbons (ZZ Top), Chris Robinson (The Black Crowes), Demi Lovato, Dorothy et Tash Neal.

En reprenant à la fois des classiques et des morceaux plus confidentiels, Slash tire son chapeau au passé de manière nostalgique, tout en revigorant ces covers avec son jeu inimitable, habile et précis et son goût pour les collaborations.

Cet album est une lettre d’amour au blues en 12 chapitres (12 morceaux), une bonne occasion pour Slash d’explorer ses racines et de rendre hommage au genre que sa grand-mère américaine lui a fait découvrir dès son plus jeune âge. Et qui, en quelque sorte, montre que le rock ne serait pas là où il est aujourd’hui sans le blues.

Tout l’album a été joué live, dans la même pièce, avec un groupe (Johnny Griparic -basse, Teddy Andreadis -claviers, Michael Jerome -batterie et Tash Neal -chant/guitare) qui a mis l’accent sur l’improvisation. Le résultat : des morceaux dynamiques et énergiques, qui restent immédiats, crus et familiers.

Chris Robinson des Black Crowes se joint à Slash pour le titre d’ouverture, The Pusher. Une version puissante et groovy dotée une superbe guitare qui donne un nouveau souffle au titre écrit par Wayne Hoyt Axton qui a été rendu populaire par le film Easy Rider et son interprétation de Steppenwolf.

Le talentueux Gary Clark Jr l’accompagne au chant et à la guitare pour une interprétation électrisante de Crossroads. Les solos y sont hallucinants.

Billy F Gibbons avec sa voix rocailleuse est aux commandes de Hoochie Coochie Man, un classique de genre, ensemble se livrant à une superbe interprétation assez traditionnelle. Le jeu de guitare y est de nouveau remarquable.

Chris Stapleton chante sur Oh Well de Peter Green mais ici, c’est la guitare survoltée qui rend le morceau vraiment impressionnant. Sur Key To The Highway, Dorothy Martin (de Dorothy) apporte beaucoup de puissance et d’émotion.

Slash a approché son vieil ami et partenaire musical Iggy Pop, qui voulait enregistrer du blues depuis longtemps. L’iguane a proposé de chanter Awful Dream, un morceau de Lightnin’ Hopkins datant de 1962, initialement enregistré à la guitare acoustique. Les deux musiciens, assis sur leurs tabourets respectifs, ont décidé de recréer cette atmosphère dépouillée et ont enregistré leur version langoureuse et émouvante dans le studio de Slash. Iggy est totalement craquant.

Orgy of the Damned est une célébration joyeuse et vibrante du blues…

Le chant fantastique de Paul Rodgers se démarque sur Born Under A Bad Sign etune invitée inattendue, Demi Lavato, sur Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone des Temptations est très impressionnante. Ce morceau garde son côté traditionnel, mais la chanteuse apporte beaucoup d’originalité avec sa voix affirmée et puissante.

Killing Floor bénéficie de la voix imparable de Brian Johnson de AC/DC alors que Steven Tyler d’Aerosmith est sublime à l’harmonica pour une interprétation électrique, rugueuse et joyeusement débridée du standard de Howlin’ Wolf datant de 1964.

Sur Living for the Cityde Stevie Wonder, Tash Neal fait une merveilleuse interprétation et sur Stormy Monday de T. Bone Walker, Beth Hart est vibrante et resplendissante d’intensité et la guitare épique.

L’album se conclut avec une magnifique composition instrumentale planante, Metal Chestnut, écrite spécialement par Slash pour l’occasion. Un morceau plein d’émotion qui met à l’évidence son approche blues dans ses riffs vertigineux hard et heavy.

Orgy for the Damned est une collection des interprétations fraiches et dynamiques de titres emblématiques de blues, qui permet à Slash d’explorer une nouvelle facette de son jeu de guitare qui puise largement dans ses inspirations blues.

Une lettre d’amour au blues en 12 chapitres…

Le guitariste et ses invités abordent chaque morceau avec finesse et subtilité, en prenant soin de garder à chaque fois son essence originale. Nous avons le sentiment d’assister à une séance de jamming entre amis, ce qui rend l’écoute très agréable.

Orgy of the Damned est un album blues rock classique, une célébration joyeuse et vibrante du blues, qui brille par l’excellent choix de morceaux intemporelles, par le choix des invités et surtout par les riffs stellaires et les solos exceptionnels de Slash qui dominent chaque chanson. Exquis !

Guns N’Roses, Slash’s Snakepit, Velvet Revolver, Slash Ft. Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators all these remarkable bands/projects have a prolific guitarist-songwriter in common: SLASH!

Barely finished the tour with SMKC (whose last concert took place at the Zenith in Paris on April 29, 2024) that the legendary guitarist finds himself on the front page of rock news with his 6th solo album, released on May 17, 2024, via Gibson Records.  A project that may seem surprising, because with Orgy Of The Damned, Slash declares his passionate love for the blues.

Just like for his self-title album released in 2010, on Orgy Of The Damned, the musician has surrounded himself with distinguished guests on vocals: Brian Johnson (AC/DC), Beth Hart, Chris Stapleton, Iggy Pop, Paul Rodgers, Gary Clark Jr, Billy F. Gibbons (ZZ Top), Chris Robinson (The Black Crowes), Demi Lovato, Dorothy and Tash Neal.

By covering both classics and more confidential tracks, Slash takes his hat off to the past in a nostalgic way, while reinvigorating these covers with his inimitable, skilful and precise playing and his taste for collaborations.

This album is a love letter to the blues in 12 chapters (12 tracks), a good opportunity for Slash to explore his roots and pay respect to the genre that his American grandmother introduced him to at a young age. And which, in a way, shows that rock wouldn’t be where it is today without the blues.

The whole album was recorded live, in the same room, with a band (Johnny Griparic – bass, Teddy Andreadis – keyboards, Michael Jerome – drums and Tash Neal – vocals/guitar) who emphasized improvisation. The result: dynamic and energetic tracks, which remain immediate, raw and familiar.

Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes joined Slash for the opening track, The Pusher. A powerful and groovy version with a superb guitar that breathes new life into the track written by Wayne Hoyt Axton which was made popular by the movie Easy Rider and its interpretation of Steppenwolf.

The talented Gary Clark Jr accompanies him on vocals and guitar for an electrifying interpretation of Crossroads. Mesmerising solos.

Billy F Gibbons with his gravelly voice is at the helm of Hoochie Coochie Man, a classic track and together indulging in a superb rather traditional interpretation. The guitar playing is once again remarkable. 

Chris Stapleton sings on Peter Green’s Oh Well but here, it’s the supercharged guitar that makes the song impressive. On Key To The Highway, Dorothy Martin (of Dorothy) brings a lot of power and emotion.

Slash approached his old friend and musical partner Iggy Pop, who had wanted to record blues for a long time. The iguana offered to sing Awful Dream, a 1962 Lightnin’ Hopkins song originally recorded on acoustic guitar. The two musicians, sitting on their respective stools, decided to recreate this stripped-down atmosphere and recorded their languorous and moving version in Slash’s studio. Iggy is totally cute.

Paul Rodgers’ fantastic vocals stand out on Born Under A Bad Sign and an unexpected guest, Demi Lavato, on Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone by the Temptations is very impressive. This track keeps its traditional side, but the singer brings a lot of originality with her assertive and powerful voice. 

A love letter to the blues in 12 chapters…

Killing Floor benefits from the unstoppable voice of Brian Johnson of AC/DC while Steven Tyler of Aerosmith is sublime on the harmonica for an electric, rough and joyfully unbridled interpretation of Howlin’ Wolf’s standard dating from 1964. 

On Living for the City by Stevie Wonder, Tash Neal makes a wonderful interpretation and on Stormy Monday by T. Bone Walker, Beth Hart is vibrant and resplendent with intensity while guitar is epic.

The album concludes with a magnificent soaring instrumental composition, Metal Chestnut, written especially by Slash for the occasion. A track full of emotion that highlights his blues approach in its dizzying hard and heavy riffs. 

Orgy of the Damned is a collection of fresh and dynamic interpretations of iconic blues songs, which allows Slash to explore a new facet of his guitar playing that draws heavily on his blues inspirations.

The guitarist and his guests approach each track with finesse and subtlety, taking care to keep every time its original essence. We have the feeling of attending a jamming session with friends, which makes listening very pleasant.

Orgy of the Damned is a classic blues rock album, a joyful and vibrant celebration of blues music, which shines with the excellent choice of timeless tracks, the choice of guests and especially the stellar riffs and exceptional solos of Slash that dominate each song. Exquisite!
