Album of the Month -JUDAS PRIEST – Masterful “Invincible Shield” -Review

JUDAS PRIEST are back! Les British Metal Gods frappent fort avec un 19eme album magistral, Invincible Shield, sorti dans les bacs le 8 mars 2024.

Rythmiques galopante, riffs tranchants et ultra rapides, festival des solos foudroyants et un Rob Halford plus féroce que jamais, les aigues en forme olympique, on retrouve avec plaisir le groupe britannique à son apogée après 50 ans de carrière ! Heavy metal rules!

Si l’album précèdent l’excellent Firepower, sorti en 2018 est devenu rapidement un classique incontournable de fans de Judas Priest, six ans plus tard, Invincible Shield est une suite géniale tout aussi réussie.

British Steel, Turbo et Painkiller ont été longtemps mes albums heavy metal de chevet et la première écoute d’Invicible Shiled m’a toute de suite transportée à cette époque.

Le premier morceau et single Panic Attack – avec son l’intro de synthé, les riffs dégoulinants d’énergie et la voix perçante de Rob Halford, qui frappe fort les notes aiguës – donne le ton parfaitement à ce qui va suivre.

L’ambiance heavy metal old school se poursuit sur The Serpent and the King dans lequel la prestation vocale rapide de Halford est tout aussi impressionnante.

Les solos et le rythme effréné de la chanson titre, l’hymne Invincible Shield crée unvéritable tourbillon émotionnel et auditif. Le mid tempo groovy et la sublime mélodie de Devil In Disguise le rend très accrocheur. Gates of Hell démarre avec un riff mélodique brillant avant de se lancer dans ambiances planantes soutenus par des rhythmiques très efficaces. Une longue intro chargée de guitares lui confère à Crown of Horns un coté dramatique, le morceau brillant monte crescendo alors que sa mélodie et son refrain entêtant nous donne une grave envie de chanter.

L’énergie furieuse de As God is my Witness nous ramène aux classiques de Priest alors que Trial By Fire un peu moins rapide est tout aussi percutant et terriblement accrocheur.

Escape from Reality est un morceau monstrueux que ça soit pour ses riffs lourds et vifs, pour le groove de basse, le chat théâtral ou le refrain qui devient vite obsédant et s’incruste facilement dans le cerveau. La gamme vocale de Halford est impressionnante.

Des riffs ultra rapides, une rythmique efficace et une voix spectaculaire, avec INVINCIBLE SHIELD on retrouve JUDAS PRIEST dans toute sa splendeur Heavy Metal ! Invincible et Triomphant !

Avec sa cadence Sons of Thunder est l’hymne Harley Davidson par excellence alors que le bluesy Giants in the Sky est un morceau complexe, profond et lourd en riffs. On y retrouve un bref et très beaux interlude de guitare acoustique et un Halford qui fait un peu son crooner. C’est un hommage à Dio et Lemmy, un morceau majestueux, avec un positive vibe, parfait pour clôturer l’album.

Judas Priest rugit à travers les 11 chansons féroces qui respectent toutes les caractéristiques du classique heavy metal ainsi le style puissant et incontournable du groupe anglais.

Le duo de guitares composé de Richie Faulkner et Glenn Tipton jouent à la vitesse de la lumière, avec une précision et une dextérité fulgurante. On assite à une compétition des riffs forts et rapides qui font monter l’intensité de chaque morceau alors que la section rythmique formé par Scott Travis à la batterie et Ian Hill à la basse imprime avec ferveur une cadence infernale.

La gamme vocale hallucinante de Rob Halford n’a pas pris une ride et impressionne tout aussi fort qu’il a y 30 ans. Il ne craint pas de torturer encore ses cordes vocales, prendre des risques et se lancer dans des chants incroyables. Il a surement bu dans la fontaine de Jouvence du heavy metal.

Le producteur Andy Sneap, guitariste de tournée du groupe depuis 2018, apporte également son génie et donne un coup d’éclat supplémentaire à cet album.

INVINCIBLE SHIELD est un disque magistral que les fans du métal classique apprécieront. C’est du Judas Priest pur et dur : énergique, mélodique, intemporel.

Au cours des décennies, JUDAS PRIEST a contribué à façonner le son et l’image du heavy metal et ils continuent à le faire. Des riffs ultra rapides, une rythmique efficace et une voix spectaculaire, avec INVINCIBLE SHIELD on retrouve JUDAS PRIEST dans toute sa splendeur Heavy Metal ! Invincible et Triomphant !

If the album precedes the excellent Firepower, released in 2018, that quickly became a must-have classic for Judas Priest fans, six years later, Invincible Shield is fantastic sequel just as successful.

British Steel, Turbo and Painkiller were bedtime heavy metal albums for a long time and the first listen to Invicible Shiled immediately transported me to that era.

The first track and single, Panic Attack – with its synth intro, energetic riffs and Rob Halford’s piercing vocals, which hits hard the high notes – sets the tone perfectly for what follows.

The old school heavy metal vibe continues on The Serpent and the King in which Halford’s fast-paced vocal performance is equally impressive. The solos and frantic pace of the title track, the anthem Invincible Shield, creates a real emotional and aural whirlwind. The groovy mid-tempo and sublime melody of Devil In Disguise makes it very catchy. Gates of Hell starts with a brilliant melodic riff before launching into soaring atmospheres supported by very effective rhythmics.

A long intro loaded with guitars gives Crown of Horns a dramatic side, the brilliant song rises to a crescendo while its melody and catchy chorus make us want to sing. The furious energy of As God is my Witness takes us back to the classics of Priest while Trial By Fire is a little slower and just as hard-hitting and terribly catchy.

Escape From Reality is a monstrous song whether for its heavy and lively riffs, for the bass groove, the theatrical vocal or the chorus that quickly becomes haunting and easily embeds itself in the brain. Halford’s vocal range is impressive.

Ultra-fast riffs, efficient rhythmic and spectacular vocals, with INVINCIBLE SHIELD we find JUDAS PRIEST in all its Heavy Metal splendour! Invincible and Triumphant!

With its cadence, Sons of Thunder is the Harley Davidson anthem par excellence, while the bluesy Giants in the Sky is a complex, deep and heavy riff song. We find a brief and very beautiful acoustic guitar interlude and a Halford who sounds a bit like a crooner. It’s a tribute to Dio and Lemmy, a majestic track, with a positive vibe, perfect to close the album.

Judas Priest roars through the 11 fierce songs that respect all the characteristics of classic heavy metal and the powerful and major style of the English band.

The guitar duo of Richie Faulkner and Glenn Tipton is mind-blowing. They play at the speed of light, with lightning-fast precision and dexterity. We have a competition of strong and fast riffs that increase the intensity of each song. The rhythm section formed by Scott Travis on drums and Ian Hill on bass imprints fervour and infernal cadence on each song.

Rob Halford’s vocal range hasn’t aged a bit and impresses just as strongly as 30 years ago. He’s not afraid to torture his vocal cords again, take risks and launch into incredible singing. He surely drank from the Fountain of Youth of heavy metal.

The producer Andy Sneap, the band’s touring guitarist since 2018, also brings his genius to give this album an extra boost. INVINCIBLE SHIELD is a masterful record that fans of classic metal will enjoy. It’s pure Judas Priest: energetic, melodic, timeless!
