Bruce Dickinson – “The Mandrake Project” – Epic, captivating and cinematic musical journey

Bruce Dickinson, l’un de plus grand chanteur heavy metal de tous les temps, avec son groupe Iron Maiden ou en solo, n’a plus besoin de présentation. Auteur-compositeur, multi-instrumentiste, escrimeur, homme d’affaire, animateur, scénariste ou pilote de ligne, multiples sont les domaines d’activité dans laquelle Bruce Dickinson excelle.

Le 1^er Mars 2024 a marqué la sortie de son nouvel album, The Mandrake Project (sur BMG records), le 7eme de sa carrière solo.

Près de vingt ans après son précédent album solo, Tyranny of Souls, sorti en 2005, Dickinson fait à nouveau équipe pour écrire et enregistrer ce nouvel opus avec son collaborateur et guitariste/bassiste/producteur de longue date, Roy Z. Le batteur Dave Moreno et le claviériste italien Mistheria (alias Giuseppe Iampieri), présents sur l’album Tyranny of Souls font aussi partie de l’aventure.

Certes, on peut dire que Bruce Dickinson ait pris son temps pour réaliser cet album (entre temps il a sorti pas moins de 4 albums avec Iron Maiden) mais ça valait la peine d’attendre, car non seulement la performance vocale de Dickinson est stellaire mais aussi sa voix incomparable est complétée par une remarquable écriture de chansons et des superbes arrangements.

The Mandrake Project est un album concept massif et audacieux. C’est une histoire sombre sur le pouvoir, l’abus et la lutte pour l’identité, sur fond de génie scientifique et magie, une histoire centrée sur un personnage central, Dr Necropolis, en quête de son identité.

The Mandrake Project est une œuvre entière, un récit que l’on va donc pouvoir écouter mais aussi le lire car l’album est accompagné d’une bande dessinée créée par Bruce Dickinson lui-même, scénarisée par Tony Lee avec de superbes illustrations de Staz Johnson pour Z2 Comics. La série comprend 12 épisodes qui se rassemblent en trois romans graphiques et qui a été lancée en janvier 2024.

Et on peut aussi le voir, car les deux vidéos sorties jusqu’à maintenant sont des véritables mini films, soigneusement mises en scène et réalises par Ryan Mackfall, dans lesquelles Bruce se révèle être un acteur talentueux.

Afterglow of Ragnarok, le premier single, nommé d’après le mythe nordique qui évoque la fin du monde, nous plonge dans une atmosphère lourde. Ses gros riffs et sa rythmique tonitruante accompagnés d’une mélodie accrocheuse, ses transitions instrumentales séduisantes et le chant charismatique de Dickinson donnent ton général de l’album.

Many Doors to Hell est punchy avec ses mélodies captivantes, un jeu de guitare passionné et énergique et quelque touches atmosphérique de clavier. Le morceau qui se démarque par sa partie centrale originale slow et bluesy.

Rain On The Graves est portée par un imposant riff de guitare, un solo exceptionnel, des claviers aux allures dramatiques et une voix majestueuse. Les mélodies sont embellies par des couplets récités de manière presque poétique.

Inspirée par une visite, un jour de pluie, sur la tombe du poète romantique William Wordsworth dans la région Lake District, au nord-ouest de l’Angleterre, cette chanson aborde la mortalité et le pacte avec le diable que les artistes ont l’impression de passer depuis que Robert Johnson a prouvé qu’il en valait la peine dans les années 30.

On continue le voyage cinématographique avec Resurrection Men et son tempo plus lent avec, des riffs sombres, on décèle un certain style flamenco qui lui confère une ambiance western spaghetti.

Fingers in the Wounds change de registre. On retrouve des accords profonds de piano et une orchestration atmosphérique moyen-orientale couronnée d’un solo exceptionnel.

Eternity Has Failed est une surprise, car c’estla version originale, la démo, du morceau If Eternity Should Fail, est précédemment sorti en 2015 sur l’album “The Book Of Souls” d’Iron Maiden. Une excellente version qui démarre avec une intro à la flûte qui lui confère une nouvelle tournure, diffrente à la chanson de Maiden. On retrouve les mêmes riffs enflammés mais ici la chanson est plus sombre, subtile et quasiment inquiétante.

Mistress Of Mercy brute et groovy, est porté par les riffs puissants de Roy Z et la performance vocale impressionnante de Dickinson.

La fin de l’album sera plus calme avec Face in the Mirror, une chanson sage et personnelle, doté d’un merveilleux solo de guitare acoustique et se belles parties de piano. Shadow of the Gods dévoile une structure complexe et émotionnelle, atmosphérique. Elle débute dans uneambiance douce avant de devenir grandiose, beaucoup plus lourde et énergique.

Sonata (Immortal Beloved) est une magnifique ballade complexe, mystique et sophistiquée. Une épopée de 10 minutes qui démarre aussi doucement avant de prendre de la vitesse et atteindre un sommet dramatique vers le refrain pour ensuite se terminer dans un registre paisible. Un morceau élégant et totalement différent, de nouveau très cinématographique. Une brillante manière de clôturer l’album.

De début à la fin, à travers chacun de dix titres d’une incroyable richesse, Bruce Dickinson et son collaborateur de longue date, Roy Z, nous invitent à un voyage musical épique, captivant et très cinématographique.

Chaque morceau a été minutieusement écrit, développé et peaufinée avec beaucoup d’attention. On retrouve de somptueuses textures musicales, des belles narrations, un mélange de multiples éléments : de hard rock, du heavy métal classique et direct et des orchestrations sophistiques, des riffs costaux et des refrains catchy et triomphants !

La polyvalence de compositions permet à Bruce Dickinson de délivrer une de meilleures performances vocales de sa carrière.

The Mandrake Project est un projet colossal qui met en valeur la vivacité de Bruce Dickinson, son enthousiasme, son imagination débordante et son talent intemporel. Véritable réussite ! Probablement son meilleur album solo !

Notons que à l’occasion de la sortie de The Mandrake Project, Bruce Dickinson a participé à deux séances de dédicace exceptionnelles à Paris chez Gibert Joseph et à Nantes à la FNAC où il a joyeusement signé des albums, des livres et a répondu avec beaucoup de gentillesse aux fans venus très nombreux ! Bruce Dickinson, one of the greatest heavy metal singers of all time, with his band Iron Maiden or solo, needs no introduction. Songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, fencer, businessman, screenwriter or airline pilot, there are many fields in which Bruce Dickinson excels.

March 1, 2024, marked the release of his new album, The Mandrake Project (on BMG records), the 7th of his solo career.

Nearly twenty years after his previous solo album, Tyranny of Souls, released in 2005, Dickinson is teaming up again to write and record this new album with his longtime collaborator and guitarist/bassist/producer, Roy Z.

The drummer, Dave Moreno, and Italian keyboardist Mistheria (aka Giuseppe Iampieri), featured on the album Tyranny of Souls, are also part of the adventure.

Of course, we can say that Bruce Dickinson took his time to make this album (in the meantime he has released no less than 4 albums with Iron Maiden) but it was worth the wait, because not only the Dickinson’s vocal performance is stellar but also his incomparable voice is complemented by remarkable songwriting and superb arrangements.

The Mandrake Project is a massive and daring concept album. It’s a dark story about power, abuse, and the struggle for identity, set against a backdrop of scientific genius and magic, a story centred on a central character, Dr. Necropolis, in search of his identity.

The Mandrake Project is a complete work, a story that we will be able to listen to but also read because the album is accompanied by a comic book created by Bruce Dickinson himself, scripted by Tony Lee with superb illustrations by Staz Johnson for Z2 Comics. The series consists of 12 episodes that come together in three graphic novels and was launched in January 2024.

And we can say that we can also see it, because the two videos released so far are real mini movies, carefully directed by Ryan Mackfall, in which Bruce reveals himself to be a talented actor.

Afterglow of Ragnarok, the first single, named after the Norse myth that evokes the end of the world, plunges us into a heavy atmosphere. Its big riffs and thunderous rhythmic accompanied by a catchy melody, its seductive instrumental transitions and Dickinson’s charismatic vocals give the general tone of the album.

Many Doors to Hell is punchy with its captivating melodies, passionate and energetic guitar playing and some atmospheric keyboard touches. The track stands out for its original slow and bluesy middle part.

Rain On The Graves is carried by an imposing guitar riff, an exceptional solo, dramatic keyboards and a majestic voice. The melodies are embellished by verses recited in an almost poetic way.

Inspired by a rainy day visit to the grave of Romantic poet William Wordsworth in the Lake District of northwest England, the song is about mortality and the deal with the devil that artists feel like they’ve been making since Robert Johnson proved it worth it in the 1930s.

We continue the cinematic journey with Resurrection Men and its slower tempo with, dark riffs. We detect a certain flamenco style that gives it a spaghetti western atmosphere. Fingers in the Wounds changes register. There are deep piano parts and an atmospheric Middle Eastern orchestration crowned by an exceptional solo.

Eternity Has Failed is a surprise, as it is the original demo version of the track If Eternity Should Fail, which was previously released in 2015 on Iron Maiden’s album “The Book Of Souls”.

An excellent version that starts with a flute intro that gives it a new twist, different from the Maiden song. We find the same fiery riffs but here the song is darker, subtle, and almost disturbing sound.

Mistress Of Mercy is raw and groovy, carried by Roy Z’s powerful riffs and Dickinson’s impressive vocal performance.

The end of the album will calm down the spirits with Face in the Mirror, a wise and personal song, with a wonderful acoustic guitar solo and beautiful piano parts. Shadow of the Gods unveils a complex and emotional atmospheric structure. It starts in a soft atmosphere before becoming grandiose, much heavier and more energetic.

Sonata (Immortal Beloved) is a beautiful, mystical and sophisticated ballad. A 10-minute epic that starts as gently before picking up speed and reaching a dramatic peak towards the chorus and then ending in a peaceful register. An elegant and totally different track, again very cinematic. A brilliant way to close the album.

From start to finish, through each of ten incredibly rich tracks, Bruce Dickinson and his partner in crime, Roy Z, invite us on an epic, captivating, and very cinematic musical journey. Each track has been meticulously written, developed, and refined with great care.

We find awesome musical textures, beautiful narrations, a mix of multiple elements: hard rock, classic and direct heavy metal and sophisticated orchestrations, energetic riffs and catchy and triumphant choruses! The versatility of the compositions allows Bruce Dickinson to deliver one of the best vocal performances of his career.

The Mandrake Project is a colossal project that showcases Bruce Dickinson’s liveliness, enthusiasm, vivid imagination, and timeless talent. A real success! Probably his best solo album!

On the occasion of the release of The Mandrake Project, Bruce Dickinson participated in two exceptional signing sessions in Paris at Gibert Joseph and in Nantes at the FNAC where he happily signed albums, books and responded with great kindness to the fans who came in large numbers! The tour kicks off in April in the USA, Mexico and Brazil before arriving in the UK and Europe.
