On entend tout le temps la même chose : le rock n’attire plus les jeunes, plutôt intéressés par le hip pop, les musiques urbaines, le K Pop…. Il est donc impossible pour un jeune groupe de rock de réussir et de connaitre la gloire de nos jours.

Globalement, c’est vrai, mais il y a de exceptions : par exemple, GRETA VAN FLEET, le groupe américain qui a connu une ascension fulgurante dans le monde entier ces 10 derniers années avec leur sonorités rock 70’s inspirées Led Zeppelin.

Comment ils ont réussi ? Grâce à beaucoup de talent et de passion, un travail acharné, de nombreuses tournées et surtout, grâce à 3 excellents albums, dont le dernier, STARCATCHER, est tout simplement stellaire !

En France, le quatuor est passé en seulement 5 ans et 4 concerts de la petite salle parisienne, Les Etoiles (environ 500 places) à Accor Arena (environ 22000 places) et c’est plutôt miraculeux.

Le groupe de Michigan a construit rapidement une base de fans solide et fidèle qui a investi donc, ce jeudi 9 novembre, l’Accor Arena. Parmi eux, un large éventail d’âges : ceux qui ont connu les années 70, les nostalgiques et mais aussi beaucoup de jeunes qui ont probablement découvert les années 70 grâce à Greta Van Fleet et qui ce soir ont sorti les pantalons patte d’eph, les chemise fleuris et arborait des jolis maquillages à paillettes.

Quand on arrive vers 19h10, la fosse est déjà bien remplie et Hannah Wicklund a déjà entamé son set. La charismatique chanteuse américaine, magnifiques cheveux longs de sirène, robe fluide colorée, style 70s nous charme pendent une vingtaine de minutes avec son rock brut infusé de blues. Très belle voix, puissante et claire, la jeune artiste nous informe que son nouvel album The Prize est déjà disponible à la vente au stand de merchandising, même s’il va sortir officiellement en Janvier. Pour info, l’album a été produit par Sam Kiscka de Greta Van Fleet qui est aussi son petit ami. Le set sera très court mais ça accroche vraiment. Une artiste à suivre.

Le deuxième groupe de la soirée s’appelle Mt Joy. La quintette américaine – quatre garçons et une fille- nous offre un set indie rock avec de incursions dans le progressif, plutôt agréable et mélodique agrémenté de quelques solos de guitare passionnés et très réussis. Dommage que le groupe évolue dans une semi-obscurité étonnante qui rend le show moins captivant qu’il mérite. Un groupe à découvrir aussi.

Une pause d’environ 30 minutes pendant laquelle un rideau est installé tout autour de la scène, alors que les gradins se remplissent doucement et la fosse est archi bondé. Les fans sont de plus en plus impatients.

L’intro démarre, les lumières s’éteignent et finalement, quand le rideau tombe, les jets de flammes éclatent, des étincelles pleuvent du plafond et nos protagonistes font une entrée spectaculaire dans une épaisse brume blanche au sommet d’une plate-forme surélevée.

Leurs costumes sont magnifiques : en satin de plusieurs couleurs avec de broderies scintillantes – le chanteur Josh Kiszka est en blanc, son frère jumeau à la guitare, Jake Kiszka en noir, leur jeune frère Sam Kiszka basse et clavier, est en rouge et leur ami et batteur Danny Wagner en blanc. Des capes, des colliers étincelantes et des maquillages assorties complètent ces tenus flamboyants. Josh et Sam portent de mocassins, qu’ils abandonneront rapidement pendant le concert pour rester pieds nus. Les premiers instants sont une explosion sensorielle. On en plein la vue !

Le groupe démarre le riff fantastique de The Falling Sky, l’harmonica à l’appui et Josh Kiszka nous ébloui déjà avec sa gamme vocale exceptionnelle qui nous coupe le souffle. Haut et puissant, Josh chante sans aucun effort et n’a aucun mal à monter très haut dans des aigues impressionnantes.   

Nouvel extrait de STARCATCHER, The Indigo Streak ralentit un peu les choses avec ses riffs lourds chargés et le rythme implacable. La voix de Josh Kiszka est encore plus mise en avant.

Des jets de flammes, un grand écran à l’arrière et des feux d’artifices accompagnait la scène simple, épuré, totalement ouverte des côtés offrant une vue imprenable sur la scène sous tous les angles.

Lover, Leaver (Taker, Believer) déborde d’énergie, à un moment Josh disparait (il le fera très souvent pendant le show pour changer de costume) en laissant la vedette à Jake Kiszka qui se lance dans un solo crescendo qui se prolonge en jam session improvisé. Même s’il est très bien exécuté, je le trouve un peu trop long, surtout si tôt dans le show.

Superbe Meeting The Master retrouve Jake d’abord à la guitare acoustique avant de passer à l’électrique et Josh se livrant dans des superbes vocalises.

Sam passe aux claviers pour Heat Above qui reçoit un très bel accueil suivi par Highway Tune qui nous ramène aux débuts du groupe, le premier grand succès avec son Rock n’Roll abrasif et direct. C’est court et efficace et le public adore.  

Le solo de batterie de Danny évidement obligatoire pour un concert de rock classique s’avéré un peu trop long aussi mais en fait, il masquera le déplacement du groupe vers le fond de la salle sur un petite scène carré.

Josh a changé de tenue, il porte une combinaison bleu brodé des étoiles. Avec Sam au piano, Jake à la guitare acoustique, il chantera une courte et magnifique reprise de Unchained Melody (à l’origine composé par Hy Zaret & Alex North mais plus connu dans la version de Righteous Brothers) le temps que Danny les rejoint. Le public derrière est évidement ravi de les voir aussi près et Josh ne manque pas interagir avec quelques fans. Petit et merveilleux interlude acoustique et intimiste avec Waited All Your Life et Black Smoke Rising.

De retour sur la scène principale avec Josh qui traverse la foule sur les épaules d’un roadie, intro de clavier et distribution de roses blanches et un Fate Of The Faithful avec un nouveaulong solo de guitare de Jake qui précédé un très impressionnant Sacred The Thread, avec Josh arborant une majestueuse longue cape blanche en satin.

The Archer terminera le set principal avec Sam au clavier et de nouveau un énorme et long solo de guitare et Jake qui se balade entre les flammes au fond de la scène baignée en rouge.

Le rappel démarre avec Sam au piano et une interprétation de Rhapsody In Blue de George Gershwin.

Alors que les claviers enchaînent sur Light My Love, les téléphones, les bras et les petits drapeaux arc en ciel se lèvent et Josh livrera une magnifique et très acclamée interprétation (il a révélé son homosexualité plus tôt cette année).

La clôture du show se fera avec Farewell For Now, la dernière chanson de Starcatcher qui deviendra probablement un classique pour terminer leurs concerts tout en beauté. Le groupe quittera la scène sous des fortes et chaleureuses ovations de la part de spectateurs totalement sous le charme.

Ce soir on a assisté à une performance puissante et divertissante de 2h20 de rock classique au doux parfum des ‘70s. Tout y était : la musique, les costumes flamboyants, les solos de guitare et de batterie étendus, la mise en scène spectaculaire.

Évidement la place d’honneur dans la set list a été donné au STARCATCHER, avec pas moins que 8 chansons, mais le groupe n’a pas oublié les hits les plus anciens.

GRETA VAN FLEET sont jeunes, beaux et particulièrement talentueux. C’est confirmé : Les gamins ont grandi et sont devenus ROCKSTARS!

Chaque membre du groupe a mis en valeur son talent individuel. Si le concert se concentre surtout sur le travail vocal absolument fabuleux de Josh Kiszka et sur les prouesses de Jake Kizska à la guitare avec nombreux solos (parfois un peu trop longues et improvisées comme s’il voulait absolument nous convaincre de son talent et de sa technique), Danny Wagner a aussi pris la vedette à la batterie et Sam Kizska a effectué un impeccable travail partagé entre la basse et les claviers.

Leur alchimie sur scène est indéniable, leur présence charismatique sur scène est captivante et la connexion avec les fans remarquable. L’éblouissant déploiement des effets de lumières et de pyrotechnie a créé une atmosphère vibrante qui a complété parfaitement la musique du groupe.

Greta Van Fleet livre ce soir une performance énergique et émotionnelle, de grande classe, qui témoigne leur talent et aussi leur immense ferveur pour le Rock N’Roll. Ils ont réussi à fédérer plusieurs générations de fans enthousiastes et conquérir les cœurs des mélomanes de tous les âges. BRAVO !

We hear all the time the same thing: that rock music no longer attracts young people, who are more interested in hip pop, urban music, K Pop… and that it is therefore impossible for a young rock band to succeed and become famous nowadays.

Overall, this is quite true. But there are some exceptions: for example, GRETA VAN FLEET, the American band that has experienced a huge success all over the world in the last 10 years with their 70’s rock sound inspired by Led Zeppelin. How did they do it?  Thanks to a lot of talent and passion, hard work, many tours and above all, thanks to 3 amazing albums, including the latest STARCATCHER, is simply stellar! 

In France, the 4-piece moved in just 5 years and 4 concerts from the small Parisian venue Les Etoiles (about 500 places) to Accor Arena (about 22,000 places) and it’s rather miraculous.

The Michigan band quickly built a solid and loyal fan base that took over the Accor Arena on Thursday, November 9. Among them, a wide range of ages: those who lived through the 70s, the nostalgic ones and but also many young people who probably discovered the 70s thanks to Greta Van Fleet and who tonight took out the flare pants, the floral shirts and the pretty glittery and brilliant makeup.

When we arrived around 7:10 p.m., the pit was already full and Hannah Wicklund had already started her set. The charismatic American singer, magnificent long mermaid hair, colourful flowing dress, 70s style charms us for about twenty minutes with her raw rock infused with blues.

Very beautiful voice, powerful and clear, the young artist informs us that her new album, The Prize, is already available for sale at the merchandising stand, even if it will be officially released in January. FYI, the album was produced by Greta Van Fleet’s Sam Kiscka who is also her boyfriend.

The set will be very short but it’s really catchy. An artist to follow.

The second band of the evening is called Mt Joy. The American quintet – four boys and a girl – offers us an indie rock set with incursions into progressive, rather pleasant and melodic embellished with some passionate and very successful guitar solos. It’s a shame that the band evolves in an astonishing semi-darkness that makes the show less captivating than it deserves. A band to discover too.

A break of about 30 minutes during which a curtain is set up all around the stage, while the stalls slowly fill up and the pit is packed. Fans are getting more and more impatient.

The intro starts, the lights go out and finally, when the curtain falls, jets of flames burst, sparks rain down from the ceiling and our protagonists make a spectacular entrance into a thick white mist on the top a raised platform.

Their costumes are magnificent: in satin in several colours with shimmering embroideries– the singer Josh Kiszka is in white, his twin brother on guitar, Jake Kiszka, in black, their younger brother, Sam Kiszka bass and keyboard, is in red and their friend and drummer, Danny Wagner, in white. Capes, sparkling necklaces and matching make-up complete these flamboyant outfits. Josh and Sam wear loafers, which they quickly ditch during the concert to stay barefoot. The first moments are a sensory explosion. It’s a feast for the eyes!

The band starts the fantastic riff of The Falling Sky, the harmonica in support, and Josh Kiszka already dazzles us with his exceptional vocal range that takes our breath away. High and powerful, Josh sings effortlessly and has no trouble going very high in impressive highs.

A new single from STARCATCHER, The Indigo Streak slows things down a bit with its heavy riffs and relentless rhythm. Josh Kiszka’s voice is even more prominent. 

Flames, a large screen at the back and fireworks accompanied the simple, uncluttered stage, totally open from the sides offering a breathtaking view of the stage from all angles. 

Lover, Leaver (Taker, Believer) is full of energy, at one point Josh disappears (he will do it very often during the show to change the costumes) leaving the spotlight to Jake Kiszka who launches into a solo crescendo that extends into an improvised jam session. Even though it’s very well executed, I find it a bit too long, especially so early in the show.

Superb Meeting The Master finds Jake first on acoustic guitar before switching to electric and Josh indulging in superb vocalizations.

Sam moves on keyboards for Heat Above which receives a very good welcome followed by Highway Tune which takes us back to the beginnings of the band, the first big success with its abrasive and direct Rock n’ Roll. It’s short and to the point and the audience loves it.

Danny’s drum solo, obviously mandatory for a classic rock concert, turns out to be too long as well, but in fact, it will mask the band’s movement towards the back of the room on a small square stage. 

Josh has changed his outfit, he wears a blue jumpsuit embroidered with the stars. With Sam on piano, Jake on acoustic guitar, he will sing a short and beautiful cover of Unchained Melody (originally composed by Hy Zaret & Alex North but better known in the Righteous Brothers version) until Danny joins them. The crowd behind them is obviously thrilled to see them so close and Josh doesn’t miss interacting with a few fans. A short beautiful acoustic and intimate interlude with Waited All Your Life and Black Smoke Rising.

Back on the main stage with Josh walking through the crowd on the shoulders of a roadie, keyboard intro and distribution of white roses on the start of Fate Of The Faithful and again a long guitar solo from Jake that preceded a very impressive Sacred The Thread, with Josh wearing a majestic long white satin cape.

The Archer will end the main set with Sam on keyboards and again a huge and long guitar solo and Jake walking through the flames at the back of the stage bathed in red.

The encore kicks off with Sam at the piano and a beautiful version of of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue.  When Light My Love startphones, arms and rainbow flags go up and Josh will deliver a beautiful and highly acclaimed performance (he came out as gay earlier this year).

The show will close with Farewell For Now, Starcatcher’s last song that will probably become a classic to end their concerts in style. The band left the stage under a loud and warm ovation from the audience, who were totally charmed.

Tonight, we witnessed a powerful and entertaining 2h20 performance of classic rock with a sweet scent of the ’70s. Everything was there: the flamboyant costumes, extended guitar and drum solos, the spectacular staging.  Of course, the place of honour in the set list was given to the STARCATCHER, with no less than 8 songs, but the band did not forget to perform their biggest hits.

GRETA VAN FLEET are young, beautiful and particularly talented. The kids have grown up and becomeROCKSTARS. 

Each member of the group showcased their individual talent. If the concert focuses mainly on the absolutely fabulous vocal work of Josh Kiszka and on the prowess of Jake Kizska on guitar with many solos (sometimes a little too long and improvised as if he absolutely wanted to convince us of his talent and technique), Danny Wagner also took the spotlight on drums and Sam Kizska did an impeccable work shared between bass and keyboards.

Their chemistry on stage is undeniable, their charismatic stage presence is captivating, and the connection with fans remarkable.

The dazzling display of lighting and pyrotechnics created a vibrant atmosphere that perfectly complemented the band’s music.

Greta Van Fleet delivers an energetic, emotional, high-class performance tonight showing their talent but also their immense passion and fervour for classic Rock N’ Roll. They had successfully united and conquered the hearts of several generations of music lovers. WELL, DONE!
