WATCH OUT! Girls Rock ! Actuellement en tournée en France et en Europe, en première partie de SCORPIONS, et aussi à l’affiche de plusieurs festivals, le groupe suédois THUNDERMOTHER va monter sur la Mainstage 2 de HELLFEST 2023, dimanche 18 juin à 12h15.

Leur album dernier album en date, Black and Gold est sorti en août 2022 (sur AFM Records) et début 2023, la guitariste fondatrice du groupe, Filippa Nässil, a annoncé une toute nouvelle line up incluant Majsan Lindberg (basse), Linnéa Vikström (chant, ex-Therion, At the Movies) et Joan Massing (batterie).

THUNDERMOTHER est né pour la scène ! Des riffs puissants et incendiaires, de mélodies accrocheuses, une rhythmique chargé d’adrénaline, les 4 suédoises vont surement mettre le feu à HELLFEST !

Avant ce concert qui s’annonce déjà incontournable, je vous propose de faire plus ample connaissance avec Filippa Nässil que j’ai eu le grand plaisir de rencontrer à Paris, il y a quelques mois. Découvrez ses influences musicales, sa passion pour AC/DC ou comment les rockeuses suédoises ont réussi à faire des concerts pendant le confinement.

Comment l’aventure THUNDERMOTHER a-t-elle commencé ?

Filippa: J’ai commencé le groupe en 2009 et depuis il y a eu 5 albums et quelques changements de line-up.

Qui ou quoi t’a donné l’idée de former un groupe de hard rock ?

Filippa : J’avais 24 ans et je faisais un stage dans un studio d’enregistrement. J’étudiais pour devenir producteur de musique et à l’époque j’enregistrais un groupe appelé Bullet. J’étais l’assistant technicien pour cet enregistrement et j’ai dit au producteur, hé, ils sonnent juste comme AC/DC. Et, il s’est vraiment mis en colère contre moi. Il m’a dit mais tu ne comprends rien ? AC/ DC est le meilleur groupe de cette planète. Ils ne font que rendre hommage et apporter leur contribution pour que les gens puissent entendre de cette façon ce genre de musique.

Et j’ai eu comme une révélation à ce moment-là. Wow, 3 accords de Rock N’Roll et c’est tellement bon. C’était comme une épiphanie pour moi. J’ai donc commencé à être obsédé par AC/DC à l’âge de 24 ans, donc assez tard et j’ai décidé de monter un groupe inspiré de ces accords faciles.

J’ai joué tellement de choses difficiles à la guitare mais je ne trouvais pas mon cœur et mon âme dedans J’ai tout essayé.  Je suis allé à l’école de guitare et on m’a fait jouer Yngwie Malmsteen, Van HALEN, Toto, funk et jazz et je n’ai rien aimé mais quand j’ai découvert AC/DC, j’ai su que c’est ça qui me plaisait. J’ai consacré ma vie à ce genre de musique. 

Pour le groupe, c’était cette idée depuis le début. Je voulais l’appeler Thundermother, je voulais être rock n’roll à fond sur scène. Je voulais faire du rock classique et continuer à perpétuer cette musique pour la génération suivante. Le monde a besoin de ce genre de musique.

Tu as commencé très jeune avec la guitare classique.

Filippa: Oui, j’ai commencé à jouer de la guitare acoustique classique quand j’étais jeune, je ne voulais pas mais, il fallait le faire et puis quand j’ai commencé le lycée, ils avaient des guitares électriques, donc j’avais des cours toutes les semaines et à la fin de la première année au lycée, j’étais la meilleure de l’école en guitare électrique.

Trois ans plus tard, je suis allée étudier au Guitar College de Stockholm. Je viens du sud de la Suède, de la campagne, alors j’ai déménagé seule à 650 km de chez moi quand j’avais 16 ans pour étudier la guitare électrique à l’Artist’s College. J’étais la seule fille à jouer de la guitare dans toute l’école. Il n’y avait que des gars et ils jouent tous dans des grands groupes maintenant. Nous sommes très fiers les uns des autres.

Vous avez fait une tournée pendant la pandémie à bord d’un camion de pompiers. Comment avez-vous eu cette idée et comment vous l’avez mis en place ? 

Filippa : Notre devise est WE FIGHT FOR ROCK N’ROLL !  On ne s’arrêtera jamais ; Cette devise sera toujours avec nous.  Nous avons contacté notre ancien manager (nous sommes self managed maintenant) et on lui a dit que nous voulions jouer. Aide-nous ! on ne veut pas rester à la maison. Nous voulons répandre la joie. 

Personne ne sort d’albums, on veut sortir un album même si nous allons perdre des ventes, nous nous en fichons parce que les gens ont besoin de musique pour être heureux.

Donc, on a pu louer ce camion et on a fait le tour de l’Allemagne. En fait, nous avons conclu un accord avec le gouvernement allemand pour obtenir des informations tous les jours à 3 heures de l’après-midi sur les règles de confinement. 

On ne savait pas le matin si on pouvait jouer le soir ou non. Seulement à 3 heures de l’après-midi on recevait un email directement du gouvernement sur les règles du confirment et on gardait bien sur le contact avec le promoteur des spectacles.

Tout le monde était enthousiaste car tout le monde s’ennuyait. Ils voulaient tous aussi faire quelque chose. Et bien sûr, les gens avaient faim de voir de la musique.   

Chaque fois, on jouait un concert complet pour 50 personnes. Ensuite, on allait dans un autre endroit le même soir et on jouait un autre concert complet pour 50 personnes. Parfois, on jouait sur une scène mais la plupart du temps, on jouait sur le toit du camion de pompiers, à l’extérieur pour garder les distances. Et les gens étaient assis dans les voitures.

Wow, je pense que vous étiez le seul groupe à faire ça.

Filippa : Oui, on a tourné pendant 4 mois et demi. En gros, on a tourné pendant toute la pandémie mais au final, on s’est retrouvé coincés dans la chambre d’hôtel pendant 4 jours car ils ne permettaient plus à personne de sortir et on a dû rentrer chez nous. Mais on a fait beaucoup de concerts et c’était beaucoup de travail. On a travaillé 2 fois plus car tous les jours, on jouait 2 shows complets.

“Nous voulons inspirer d’autres filles pour faire du Rock N’Roll”

Parlons de l’album Black and Gold quand et comment vous avez écrit cet album ?

Filippa: En 2021, entre ces tournées, nous avons eu 2 semaines de congé à la maison et on s’est dit OK, allons en studio et écrivons ensemble.  Le premier jour, nous avons dit, ok, écrivons 2 chansons aujourd’hui et nous l’avons fait ! On a été très efficaces. Chacun de nous écrivait une partie, puis on échangeait les rôles et on s’entraidait. Donc les riffs et les paroles ont été faits en même temps.

On a enregistré directement sur l’ordinateur, afin de pouvoir l’écouter immédiatement et avoir les démos.  On a fait 12-14 chansons de cette manière et comme elles étaient vraiment bonnes, on a dit ok, on a un album maintenant, alors réservons une tournée car nous voulions vraiment sortir et tourner à nouveau après la pandémie. 

Donc, à la fin de la pandémie, on s’est enfermés en studio pour finir l’album rapidement. On n’a rencontré personne pendant ce temps-là car comme tu sais le temps de studio est très cher et on ne voulait prendre aucun risque que l’une de nous ne puisse pas venir.  On a terminé en 3 semaines. On a fait un très bon travail dans le studio BAGGPIPE, qui est un studio analogique légendaire à Stockholm. C’est là où ABBA a enregistré.   

Les gens n’utilisent plus ce studio parce qu’il y a que de la musique pop de nos jours. C’était amusant car il y avait beaucoup de gens, comme des producteurs pop, assis au balcon au-dessus de cette grande salle où on enregistrait et ils nous regardaient comme, oh, il y a une vraie batterie et il y a des vraies guitares, elles existent toujours.

Tu as un morceau préférée sur Black and Gold?

Filippa: Eh bien, j’aime tout ce qui est fun et Rock N’Roll, donc j’aime Wasted parce que je pense que c’est FUN  et  c’est du vrai Rock N’Roll classique. C’est tout ce que j’aime.

Honnêtement, je suis vraiment fière de toutes les chansons. Tous sont vraiment quelque chose que j’écouterais moi-même. Chaque chanson est très différente. Try With Love est un très bon morceau aussi. Et la première chanson, The Light In The Sky, est vraiment comme une grande chanson de batterie et Hot Mess sonne comme une ballade très Aerosmith.

Vous gardez cette flamme de heavy metal classique. L’un de mes préférés est I Don’t Know You. Comment avez-vous écrit cette chanson ?

Filippa : On a commencé avec le refrain et on a invité un coauteur avec nous, car nous voulions vraiment écrire un hit, alors nous lui avons demandé de nous aider. On a donc fait cette chanson avec Palle Hammarlund et on a enregistré la démo dans son mini-studio. 

C’est un auteur-compositeur à succès ; Il sait ce qui est bien et ce qu’on aime.  Pour les couplets, une des filles a dit que nous devions faire un peu de Kiss et j’ai dit que nous avions besoin d’AC/DC en intro et donc, c’est devenu cette chanson. je dirais que cette chanson est une sorte de Kiss, mixé avec AC/DC et avec un gros refrain à succès. 

Tu as un style de mode très rock. Quels sont tes articles préférés dans ta garde-robe?

Filippa: J’adore ma veste léopard moelleuse. Je porte beaucoup des pantalons flares, style années 70. Je n’aime pas montrer mes jambes, je n’ai pas de slims. Je collectionne les vestes. J’ai peut-être 20 vestes ; Je joue toujours avec des vestes, c’est ma grande addiction et je porte toujours des chaussures plates car je ne peux pas marcher avec des plates-formes, je risque de me casser les jambes. Je ne peux pas courir en talons sur scène.

Comment te sens-tu en tant que groupe de hard rock féminin dans cette industrie qui est assez dominée par les hommes ?

Filippa: Certainement, on a toujours été traité un peu différemment. On peut le voir. Par exemple, lors des tournées, si on a un crew masculin ou un petit ami avec nous, les gens vont les voir et leur parler à eux. Ils ne viennent pas nous voir, nous. C’est très courant, mais cela s’améliore au fur et à mesure qu’on devient plus connues.

WATCH OUT! Girls Rock! Currently on tour in France and Europe opening for SCORPIONS, and also on the line up of several festivals, the Swedish band THUNDERMOTHER will perform on the Mainstage 2 of HELLFEST 2023, Sunday, June 18 at 12:15. 

Their latest album, Black and Gold was released in August 2022 (on AFM Records) and in early 2023, the band’s founder and guitarist, Filippa Nässil, announced a brand-new band line-up including Majsan Lindberg (bass), Linnéa Vikström (vocals, ex-Therion, At the Movies) and Joan Massing (drums).

Before this not -to- be -missed concert, I invite you to get to know better Filippa Nässil whom I had the great pleasure to meet in Paris some months ago. Discover her musical influences, her passion for AC/DC or how Swedish rockers managed to do concerts during lockdown. Fabulous !

How THUNDERMOTHER adventure started?

Filippa: Actually, I started the band in 2009 and we released 5 albums and there were a few line-up changes since then.

Who or what gave you the idea to start a hard rock band?

Filippa: I was 24 years old and I was doing an internship in a studio. I was studying to be a music producer and at the time I was recording a band called Bullet. I was the technician assistant for this recording and I said to the producer, hey, they just sound like AC DC. And then he got really angry with me, like don’t you get anything? AC DC is the best band on this planet. They are just paying the respect and contributing in this way so people can hear this kind of music.

 And I got like a revelation at that time. You know like, wow 3 chords Rock N Roll is so good. it was like an Epiphany for me. So, I started to be obsessed by AC DC when I was 24, so it was pretty late in discovering them and I decide to start a band inspired from these easy chords.

I have been playing so many difficult things on guitar but I can’t find my heart in anything. I tried everything.  I went to Guitar School and the make me play Yngwie Malmsteen, Van HALEN, Toto, funk and jazz and I did not love anything but when I found AC DC, I know that that’s the one. I dedicated my life to this kind of music.

For the band, it was the same idea from the beginning. I wanted to be named Thundermother and we gonna be rocking and be crazy on stage. I wanted to do classic rock and carried on for the next generation. The world needs this kind of music.

Did you start with classic guitar first? 

Filippa: Yes, I started playing classic acoustic guitar when I was young, I did not want to but you have to and then when I started high school, they had electric guitar, so I had lessons every week and at the end of the first year in high school, I was the best in school in electric guitar.

So, 3 years later, I went the Guitar College in Stockholm. I am from the south of Sweden, from the country side, so I moved by myself to 650 km far from home when I was 16 to study electric guitar in Artist’s College. I was the only girl playing guitar in the whole school. There were only guys and all of them are playing in big bands now. We are very proud of each other.

You toured during the pandemic on a fire truck. How did you get this idea and how was possible?

Filippa : Our motto is WE FIGHT FOR ROCK N’ ROLL !  We will never stop; this motto will be forever with us.

We contact our former manager (we are seft managed now) and we told him that we want to play. We said please help us; we do not want to sit at home. We want to spread joy.

No one is releasing albums, we want to release an album even if we will lose sales, we do not care because people need music to be happy.

So, we could rent this truck, we stood on the roof and toured across Germany. Actually, we made a deal with the German Government to get information at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, every day about the lockdown rules.

Actually, we did not know in the morning if we can play tonight or not, only at 3 o’clock we get email directly from the government about what are the rules and we talked very closely with the promoter of the shows.

They were very excited as they were bored, they also wanted to do something. And of course, people were hungry to see music.   

Every time, we did a full show for 50 people. Afterwards, we move to another place in the same evening and had another full show for 50 people.

Sometimes, we played on a stage but most of the time, we played on the fire truck, outside to keep distance. and people were sitting in the cars.

Wow, I guess you were the only band to do this.

Filippa: Right, we did this during 4 months and a half. Basically, we toured during all pandemic but in the end, we could not do it anymore, we were stuck in the hotel room for 4 days as they did not allow anybody anymore and we had to go home. But we did a lot of shows and it was a lot of work. We did double amount of work as every day we played 2 full shows per day.

Let’s talk about Black and Gold album when did you start and how you write this album?

Filippa: In 2021 between these tours, we had 2 weeks off home and we said OK, let’s go in the studio and write together.

First day we said, ok let’s write 2 songs today and we did it! We were very efficient. Each of us write a part, then we swap the roles and help each other, so the riffs and the lyrics were done in the same time.

We recorded it straight into the computer, so we can listen to it immediately and have the demos.  And we had like this 12-14 songs and they were really good, so we said, ok we got an album now, so let’s book a tour as we really wanted to go out and tour again after the pandemic.

So, at the end of the pandemic, we were locked in the studio to finish the album quicky, we could not meet anybody as you know the studio time it’s very expensive and we did not take any risk of not being able to come for some reasons.

We finished in 3 weeks. We did a really great job in BAGGPIPE studio, which is a legendary analog studio in Stockholm were ABBA recorded.   

People do not use this studio anymore because it’s only pop music nowadays. It was fun as there were a lot of people, like pop producers, sitting at the balcony above this big room watching us like, oh, there are real drums and real guitars, they are still existing.

Do you have a favourite song on Black and Gold?

Filippa: Well, I am all about the fun and Rock N’ Roll so, I like Wasted because I think it is funny, real classic Rock N’ Roll. It is all I love. If you listen to the lyrics is It’s about being wasted in Love.

Honestly, I am really proud of all of songs. All of them are really something that I would listen to myself. Every song is very different of each other. Try with Love, it’s also very good.

The first song The Light In The Sky, is really like a big drum song arena and Hot Mess is a very Aerosmith ballad sound.

You keep this flame of classic heavy metal. One of my favourites is  I Don’t Know You. How did you write this song?

Filippa: We started with the chorus and we actually invited a cowriter with us, as we really wanted to write a hit so we asked him to help us. So, we did it together with this guy, Palle Hammarlund, and we were recording in his mini studio.

He helped us with the demo. He is a kind of hits songwriter; he knows what’s well and that we all loved.  For the versus, one girl said we have to do some Kiss here, and I said we need to have some AC DC in intro and so, it become that song – so I would say at this and is some kind of Kiss, AC DC and a hit chorus

You have a very rock fashion style. What are your favourite items in your wardrobe?

Filippa: I love my fluffy leopard jacket. I wear flare pans, 70’s style. I do not like to show my legs, I do not have tights pants. I collect jackets. I have maybe like 20 jackets; I always play with jackets that’s my big addiction and I always wear flat shoes as I cannot walk with platforms, I would break my legs. I can’t run-in heels on stage.

People even give us leather clothes, so free clothes and we love them.

How do you feel being a girIs hard rock band in this industry which is quite dominated by men?

Filippa: Definitely, we ‘ve been treated little bit different. We can see it. For example, on tours if we have a male crew or a boyfriend with us, people go to the guys and talk to them not to us. That’s very common but it’s getting better the bigger we get.
