Nous y voilà au troisième et dernier jour du Heavy Week-End au Zenith de Nancy (on espère que vous avez aimé nos reviews du Jour 1 & jour 2) et la journée s’annonce très intense!

Le line up avec en tête d’affiche le mastodonte SLIPKNOT, 2 groupes français, la référence en matière de heavy metal MASS HYSTERIA et les étoiles montantes de Rise of the Northstar sans oublier les texans de Nothing More, nous promet la journée la plus lourde, la plus brutale et la plus explosive en matière de style de métal.

La matinée est pluvieuse et il fait froid pour un 8 juin, mais cela ne nous empêche pas de continuer notre parcours Art Nouveau dans la belle ville de Nancy. En passant par la gare, on remarque le flux continu de fans qui portent des T-Shirt Slipknot et arrivent par les trains. D’ailleurs, toute la ville semble prise d’assaut par les fans du groupe américain.

Grosse différence par rapport au jours précédents en arrivant sur le site du festival, car les parkings sont pleins, les voitures se suivent en fil continu et l’affluence des fans à pieds est imposante. Une longue mais joyeuse file d’attente traverse le parking PMR/médias pour accéder au Zenith.

Comme d’habitude les hostilités démarrent à 17h30 et les premiers rangs sont déjà envahis par de fans masquées ou pas, tous souriants et prêts pour une journée pleine d’émotions fortes. Et cerise sur le gâteau, le soleil est au RDV aussi.

Nothing More – Explosion d’énergie et d’adrénaline

J’ai eu mon coup de foudre pour Nothing More en 2017 grâce à leur album The Stories We Tell to Ourselves (nommé aux Grammy Awards) et j’ai ensuite aimé leur albums Spirits (2022) et Carnal (2024) mais je ne les avais pas vu en live depuis 2018.  J’avais dont hâte de le retrouver au Heavy Week End, la seule date du groupe dans l’Hexagone pour cette année.

Comme d’habitude, ils mettront le feu dès les premières secondes … avec deux morceaux extraits de Carnal : Hand on the Sand et If It Doesn’t Hurt. Le nouvel album sera mis à l’honneur cet après-midi avec 4 morceaux sur les 8 qui formeront leur set list.

Le Scorpion Tail, l’impressionnant drum électronique qui faisait partie de leurs anciens shows n’est plus sur scène. Juste une toile de fond avec le visuel du dernier album fait office de décor.

Le front man Jonny Hawkins look sauvage (torse nu peint en noir et doré et les pieds nus) est flanqué par Mark Vollelunga (guitare), Daniel Oliver (basse). Tous les trois bougent sans arrêt, grimpent sur les plateformes installées en bord de scène, s’échangent leur places et harangue la foule. Ben Anderson à la batterie joue avec une rapidité impressionnante.

Rock, métal mixé à des éléments électro ou hip-hop, un déluge sonore puissant et tourbillonnant s’abat sur la foule de plus en plus réceptive. Les slammeurs commencent à se lancer.

Angel Song et sa cadence infernale, ses riffs déchiquetés et son refrain mélodique est divin. Le groupe de San Antonio n’a aucune envie de ralentir la cadence. 

Le chant de Jonny Hawkins est d’une force incroyable (si au début dans le pit photo, on ne l’entend pas très bien, ça va s’améliorer au fur et à mesure que le show avance). Son registre vocal est très impressionnant : du brut et agressif au doux émotionnel ou haut perché. Il est complètement habité par son chant.

Mark – toujours avec sa manche droite de T-Shirt découpé (il a aussi rasé le côté droit de sa tête) – envoie les riffs enragés alors que Daniel complétement déchainé à la basse saute comme une pile électrique !

L’explosif, Let them Burn accompagné par de flammes est fantastique, suivi de l’incontournable Jenny et surtout Go to War avec son cri de guerrier, sa rythmique d’enfer et ses riffs bien accrocheurs, mettront le public KO.

Tout est allé très vite et le concert finira avec Jonny (armé d’une caisse batterie), Marc et Daniel dans le crash au milieu des bras levés et des slammeurs, pour interpréter titre This is The Time.

Véritable explosion d’énergie, d’émotion et d’adrénaline en seulement 8 morceaux. Et des ovations bien méritées ! J’aurais aimé un set plus long  !

Petite pause en compagnie de la playlist concoctée par notre ami Matthieu David. L’amphithéâtre continue à se remplir à grande vitesse et la fosse est maintenant quasi pleine.

Rise Of The Northstar – Performance explosive et ambiance d’enfer.

“Metal-HxC-Rap-Manga”: voilà 4 mots qui définissent parfaitement la touche si singulière de Rise Of The Northstar, le deuxième groupe de la journée. J’avais entendu parle du groupe originaire de la banlieue Parisienne, sans jamais avoir l’occasion de les voir en live.

Le combo français s’est forgé, en 3 Ep et 3 albums, une solide réputation de monstre d’énergie scénique. Il comptabilise aujourd’hui plusieurs dizaines de millions de streams sur ses réseaux et a même enregistré avec Joe Duplantier de Gojira.

La foule énorme qui occupe maintenant la fosse du Zénith confirme sa popularité.

Une énorme toile en fond de scène avec le sigle du groupe en rouge, des écritures manga ainsi qu’un cerisier japonais près de kit batterie composent le décor.

Le show démarre et c’est toute de suite la folie. Dans le pit photo, on a du mal à se faufiler entre les membres de la sécurité qui doivent évacuer à tour de rôle les slammeurs qui se succèdent un après l’autre.

Sur scène les musiciens sont très dynamiques. Habillés en vêtements noir siglés Northstar, je note des éléments distinctifs pour chacun, un masque pour le guitariste Brice (Eva-B) Gauthier, une casquette bien vissée sur la tête pour le chanteur Vithia, ou bandana et longues chaussettes pour le guitariste barbu Air One Menez.

Le set list déroulera un mix de morceaux de leurs albums qui représente bien leur style : une fusion du hardcore brutal et percutant, une déferlante de riffs métalliques couplé à un chant hip-hop furieux à peine compréhensible. C’est intense et ultra puissant et dégage une énergie explosive.

C’est un chaos impressionnant dans la fosse ! Les fans s’agitent, s’empressent de chanter, de crier ou de jumper et de mettre les bras en air. Vue depuis le haut des gradins, c’est un spectacle incroyable !!

Pendant une heure, le public sera sollicité non-stop et mis à dure épreuve ! Le frontman Vithia, demande constamment des circle pit et de wall of death et les fans s’executent.

Le nouveau single, Néo Paris, issu du prochain album sera joue pour la première fois joué en live.

Même si ce n’est pas mon truc, je suis totalement impressionné par cette performance explosive et l’ambiance d’enfer.

MASS HYSTERIA – Performance épatante, superbe énergie communicative

La fosse est bondée et les gradins sont noirs du monde quand c’est le tour de MASS HYSTERIA d’entrer en scène.

L’un de groupes le plus emblématiques de la scène métal a fêté triomphalement 30 ans de carrière et a réussi à se réinventer à chacun de leurs 10 albums studio. Ce soir, ils ont donc la lourde tâche de se produire avant le mastodonte SLIPKNOT.

Sur scène un M et un H de chaque côté de la plateforme où est installé la batterie, une voix dans la sono demande si « les furieux, les furieuses, êtes-vous prêts pour Mass Hysteria? », et le public devient furieux et furieuses.

C’est de nouveaux la bousculade dans le pit photo car la sécurité nous prévient qu’il y aura beaucoup de pyrotechnique, donc il ne faut pas trop s’approcher de la scène et en même temps pas trop de la barrière non plus car l’arrivée des slammeurs s’intensifie. Je stresse un peu, mais tout se passe très bien et je suis super contente de pouvoir enfin photographier le groupe français.

Le concert démarre avec le titre Mass Veritas issue de leur double album Tenace (V1). Et les musiciens sautent et s’agitent comme des fous, et font des gestes vers le public. Le draconien Positif à bloc suit et l’énergie est déjà à son comble. L’atmosphère est électrique et on vera encore mieux depuis les gradins ou on s’installe après les 3 première chansons.

Metal industriel ultra puissant avec un déluge de riffs, des rythmiques accrocheuses et un chanté parlé- rappé si particulier de charismatique Mouss.

En véritable maître de cérémonie, on dira qu’il est en train de faire en discours en chantant les paroles des chansons toujours aussi engagés et touchantes mais aussi en communiquant avec le public entre les chansons. Des regards, des gestes, des sourires, il s’adresse sans cesse aux les furieux et les furieuses. Il parle d’humanité, de la vie, des sujets graves et mais aussi de l’espoir.

Jamie Ryan excellent à la basse s’adresse aussi souvent à la foule pour l’inciter de jumper, chanter, taper dans les mains ou faire des wall of death. Des flammes jaillissent à de nombreuses reprises.

Le deux guitaristes, Yann et Fred se complètent parfaitement et Raphaël Mercier frappe fortement dans son kit.

Le set list sera formé des morceaux extrais plutôt de trois albums Maniac, Matière Noire et Tenace (V1&2).

C’est punchy, c’est magique et c’est fracassant de début à la fin, morceau par morceau, aucun répit pour les fans qui ne sont pas fatigués. Les titres s’enchaînent à toute vitesse : Chiens de la casse, Vae Soli!, L’inversion des pôles, L’enfer des dieux, Plus que du metal.

La foule déchainée réagit à chaque morceau. Wall of Death a plusieurs reprises et encore une fois vu depuis les gradins, c’est impressionnant.

Mouss annonce que le groupe fête cette année son trentième anniversaire et évidement un traditionnel Joyeux Anniversaire sera repris en chœur par toute la fosse.

Mass Hysteria dans toute sa puissance ! Performance épatante, superbe énergie communicative et un public en feu ! Mon concert préféré de la journée et avec EUROPE, du festival !

Franchement ça sera difficile de faire mieux pour SLIPKNOT.

 45 minutes de pause et il fait de plus en plus froid ! On profite pour faire un tour au village : les stands de merch sont bien fournis, les files d’attente au food truck sont interminables. Décidément, en ce jour de grand affluence l’offre reste insuffisante. Pareil pour les toilettes, bien plus nombreuse que l’année dernière l’attente reste longue.

SLIPKNOT – furieux, brutal et ultra efficace

22h, il est temps pour la tête d’affiche (et du festival ?!) SLIPKNOT et visiblement la principale attraction, vu l’immense foule massée dans la fosse. Même les gradins sont archis pleins. Il faut savoir que c’est la seule date française de la tournée des Américains.

On trouve une bonne place en haut de gradins pour profiter de spectacle. Pas de photos cette fois, car seulement 6 photographes (parmi une trentaine) ont été choisi par le management du groupe pour immortaliser le concert.

Une longue intro et une répétition de « time is generous » est passé en boucle avant que les musiciens masqués arrivent sur scène et démarrent en trombe avec Sic dans une ambiance verte surnaturelle.

L’incontournable tornade People=shit suit, morceaux repris en chœur avec force par un public déchainé qui hurle, saute, headbang avec une frénésie hallucinante. Les slammeurs sont de plus en plus nombreux et la sécurité qui a triplé pour ce concert a de plus en plus de boulot. Dans les gradins quasiment tout le monde est debout et hurle à tue-tête.

Pendant 1h30 les Américains vont atomiser la foule à coups de riffs tranchants, rythmiques chaotiques et hurlements puissants. Machine de guerre, bulldozer, marteaux-piqueurs, comme vous voulez… la sono est tout simplement dantesque. Les lumières sont puissantes, intenses sans être trop agressives et collent bien à la musique.

Le set list nous ballade dans un bon nombre de leurs albums avec des hits comme Wait and Bleed, Yen, Psychosocial ou Duality.

Corey Taylor est en forme et très communicatif.  Il s’adresse au public très souvent, pour annoncer l’absence du Clown (à cause de problème familiale), pour raconter des souvenirs de ses premiers concerts en France ou pour remercier les fans. En tous les cas, il est impressionné par la foule incroyable rassemblée ce soir.

Je ne connais pas l’univers du groupe, ce n’est pas mon style, et donc, je ne saurais pas décrypter les masques de musiciens ou le rôle de chacun, notamment d’un personnage qui se balade sur scène pour faire toute sorts de pitreries.

Bref c’est furieux, brutal et ultra efficace, et encore un fois le spectacle depuis les gradins est extraordinaire : cette marée humaine en délire bouge et vibre à l’unisson et se livre en permanence à de cercle pits, wall of death et headbanging de folie. Vers le milieu, il y aura un solo de claviers ou plutôt un DJ set et la fosse se transforme en dance floor. C’est fascinant !

Je partirai avant le rappel mais, n’empêche SLIPKNOT livre un concert exceptionnel qui a dû satisfaire le fan le plus exigent.

C’est donc clap de fin pour Heavy Week- End 2025 ! Le festival a attiré en total 35000 spectateurs dont 16 000 le dernier jour (d’après l’Est Republican).

Et on peut dire que Heavy Week-End a tenu toutes ses promesses : une excellente programmation très variée, des vrais concerts d’une grande qualité, un timing respecté, une magnifique ambiance, un très bon accueil et une très bonne organisation. Certes, il reste les files d’attente interminable pour les food trucks et aux toilettes, mais c’est un peu le cas de tous les festivals en jours de grande affluence.

L’amphithéâtre du Zenith est toujours aussi extraordinaire. Il offre une bonne visibilité, un son fabuleux et il est très facile d’accès.

Heavy Week-End est en phase de devenir une incontournable pour tous les headbangers !

La bonne nouvelle est que le festival revient en 2026 du 5 au 7 juin. Hâte de connaitre la programmation et mon petit doigt me dit qu’elle sera tout aussi remarquable !

Here we are on the third and last day of Heavy Week-End at the Zenith du Grand Nancy (we hope you enjoyed our reviews of Day 1 & Day 2) and all the conditions are there to enjoy it.

The line up with the mastodont SLIPKNOT, two French bands, the reference in heavy metal MASS HYSTERIA and the rising stars of Rise of the NorthStar without forgetting the Texans of Nothing More promises us the heaviest, the most brutal and the most explosive one in terms of metal style.

The morning is rainy, and it is cold for and June 8th, but that does not stop us from continuing our Art Nouveau journey in the beautiful city of Nancy. Passing by the railway station, we notice the continuous flow of fans with Slipknot T-Shirts arriving by train. Moreover, the whole city seems to be taken by storm by the fans of the American band.

Big difference compared to the previous days when arriving at the festival site, because the parkings are full, the cars arrive in continuous traffic and the influx of fans on foot is imposing. A long and joyfull queue crosses the PMR/media car park to access the Zenith.

As usual, the hostilities start at 5:30 p.m. and the first rows are already invaded by fans masked or not, all smiling and ready for a day full of emotions. And cherry on the pie, the sun is out too.

Nothing More – Explosion of energy and adrenaline

I fell in love with Nothing More in 2017 thanks to their Grammy-nominated album The Stories We Tell to Ourselves and then loved their following albums Spirits (2022) and Carnal (2024) but hadn’t seen them live since 2018.  I was looking forward to see the Texans at Heavy Week End, the band’s only date in France for this year.

As usual, they will set fire to the fire from the first seconds… with two tracks from Carnal: Hand on the Sand and If It Doesn’t Hurt. The new album will be in the spotlight this afternoon with 4 tracks out of the 8 that will form their set list.

The Scorpion Tail, the impressive electronic drum that was part of their old shows, is no longer on stage. Just a backdrop with the visual of the last album as stage decoration.

The front man Jonny Hawkins and his wild side shirtless and painted in black and gold and the bare foot is flanked by Mark Vollelunga (guitar), Daniel Oliver (bass). The three of them move non-stop, climb on the platforms set up at the edge of the stage, swap seats and harangue the crowd. Ben Anderson on drums plays with impressive speed.

Rock, metal mixed with electro or hip-hop elements, a powerful and swirling deluge of sound falls on the increasingly receptive crowd. The crowd surfers get started.

Angel Song and its infernal cadence, its shredded riffs and its melodic chorus is divine. The San Antonio group has no desire to slow down. 

Jonny Hawkins’ vocals are incredibly strong (if at the beginning in the pit photo, we don’t hear him very well, it will improve as the show progresses). His vocal range is very impressive: from raw and aggressive to emotional soft or high-pitched. He is completely inhabited by his singing.

Mark – still with his right T-Shirt sleeve cut-out (he also shaved the right side of his head) – sends the raging riffs and Daniel, completely unleashed on the bass, jumps like an electric battery!

The explosive, Let them Burn accompanied by flames is fantastic, followed by the inevitable Jenny and especially Go to War with its warrior cry, its hellish rhythmic and catchy riffs, will knock out the audience.

Everything went very quickly, and the concert will end with Jonny (armed with a drum box), Marc and Daniel in the crash in the middle of raised arms and crowd surfers, to perform the title This is The Time.

A real explosion of energy, emotion and adrenaline in just 8 tracks. And well-deserved ovations! I would have liked much more!

A short break in the company of the playlist concocted by our friend Matthieu David. The amphitheater continues to fill up at a rapid rate and the pit is now almost full and with the sun.

Rise Of The Northstar – explosive performance and the hellish atmosphere

“Metal-HxC-Rap-Manga”: these are 4 words that perfectly define the singular touch of Rise Of The Northstar, the second band of the day. If I had already heard about the band from the Paris, I never had the opportunity to see them live.

The French combo has forged, in 3 EPs and 3 albums, a solid reputation as a monster of stage energy. It has tens of millions of streamings and it has even recorded with Joe Duplantier of Gojira.

The huge crowd that now occupies the pit of the Zenith confirms his popularity.

A huge backdrop at the back of the stage with the band’s logo in red, manga writings and a Japanese cherry blossom tree near the drum kit make up the décor.

The show starts and it’s immediately crazy. In the pit photo, it is difficult to squeeze between the members of the security who have to take turns evacuating the slammers who follow one after the other.

On stage, the musicians are very dynamic. Dressed in black clothes with the Northstar logo, I note distinctive elements for each one, a mask for guitarist Brice (Eva-B) Gauthier, a cap screwed on the head for singer Vithia, or bandana and long socks for the bearded guitarist Air One Menez.

The set list will feature a mix of tracks from their albums that represents their style well: a fusion of brutal and hard-hitting hardcore, a surge of metal riffs coupled with furious hip-hop vocals that are barely understandable. It’s intense and ultra-potent and exudes explosive energy.

It’s an impressive chaos in the pit! Fans are agitated, hurry to sing, shout or jump and put their arms in the air. Seen from the top of the stands, it’s an incredible sight!!

For one hour, the audience will be solicited non-stop and put to the test! Frontman Vithia, constantly asks for circle pits and wall of death and the fans comply.

The new single, Neo Paris, from the upcoming album will be played live for the first time.

Even if it’s not my thing, I’m totally impressed by this explosive performance and the hellish atmosphere.

MASS HYSTERIA- Amazing performance, superb communicative energy

The pit is packed, and the stands are almons full too, when it is MASS HYSTERIA’s turn to enter the stage.

One of the most emblematic bands of the metal scene in France has triumphantly celebrated 30 years of career and has managed to reinvent itself with each of their 10 studio albums. Tonight, they have the difficult task of performing before SLIPKNOT.

On stage, an M and an H on each side of the platform where the drums are installed, a voice in the sound system asks if “furious-boys , furious-girls, are you ready for Mass Hysteria?”, and the audience becomes furious.

It’s again a rush in the photo pit because the security warns us that there will be a lot of pyrotechnics, so we must not get too close to the stage and at the same time not too close to the barrier either because the arrival of the crowd surfers is intensifying. I’m a little bit stressed, but everything is going very well and I’m super happy to finally be able to photograph the French band.

The concert starts with the track Mass Veritas from their double album Tenace (V1&V2). And the musicians jump and move like crazy, and gesture towards the audience. The draconian Positif à bloc follows and the energy is already at its peak. The atmosphere is electric, and you can see even better from the stands where we sit after the first 3 songs.

Ultra powerful industrial metal with a deluge of riffs, catchy rhythms and a spoken-rapped singing so particular to the charismatic Mouss.

As a true master of ceremonies, we will say that he is making a speech while singing the lyrics of the songs always so committed and touching but also while communicating with the audience between the songs. With gazes, gestures, smiles, he constantly addresses the furious. It talks about humanity, life, serious subjects but also about hope.

Jamie Ryan, excellent on bass, also often addresses the crowd to encourage them to jump, sing, clap their hands or do wall of death. Flames burst out many times.

The two guitarists, Yann and Fred are perfectly synchronised and Raphaël Mercier hits hard in his kit.

The set list will be made up of tracks from three albums Maniac, Matière Noire and Tenace (V1&2).

It’s punchy, it’s magical and it’s smashing from start to finish, track by track, no respite for the fans who are not tired. The titles follow one another at full speed: Chiens de la casse, Vae Soli!, L’inversion des pôles, L’enfer des dieux, Plus que du metal.

The unleashed crowd reacts to each song. Wall of Death several times and once again seen from the stands, it’s impressive.

Mouss announces that the band is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this year and of course a traditional “Happy Birthday” will be sing along.

Mass Hysteria in all its power! Amazing performance, superb communicative energy and an audience on fire! My favourite concert of the day and with EUROPE, of the festival!

Frankly, it will be hard to do better for SLIPKNOT.

 45 minutes break and it’s getting colder and colder! We take the opportunity to take a tour of the festival village: the merch stands are well stocked, the queues at the food truck are endless. Decidedly, on this day of great affluence, the offer remains insufficient. The same goes for the toilets, which are much more numerous than last year, but the wait is still long.

SLIPKNOT – Furious, brutal and ultra effective!

10 p.m., it’s time for the headliner (and of the festival?!) SLIPKNOT and obviously the main attraction, given the huge crowd massed in the pit. Even the stands are very full. You should know that this is the only French date of the Americans’ tour.

We have a good place at the in the stands ready to enjoy the show. No photos this time, because only 6 photographers (out of thirty) were chosen by the band’s management to immortalize the concert. The two ones you see are taken as simple spectators with my mobile phone.

A long intro and a repetition of “time is generous” is played on a loop before the masked musicians arrive on stage and start with Sic in a supernatural green atmosphere.

The inevitable tornado People=shit follows, songs sung along with force by a wild audience that screams, jumps, headbangs with a hallucinatory frenzy. The crowd surfers are more and more numerous and the security which has tripled for this concert has more and more work. In the stands, almost everyone is standing and screaming at the top of their lungs.

For 1h30 the Americans will atomize the crowd with hellish riffs, chaotic rhythms and powerful screams. War machine, bulldozer, jackhammers, whatever you want… The sound system is simply Dantesque. The lights are powerful, intense without being too aggressive and stick well to the music.

The set list takes us on a walk through a good number of their albums with hits like Wait and Bleed, Yen, Psychosocial or Duality.

Corey Taylor is fit and very communicative.  He addresses the public very often, to announce the absence of the Clown (because of family problems), to tell memories of his first concerts in France or to thank the fans. In any case, he is impressed by the incredible crowd gathered tonight.

I don’t know the universe of the band, it’s not my style, and therefore, I wouldn’t know how to decrypt the masks of musicians or the role of each one, especially a character who walks around on stage to do all kinds of clowning.

In short, it’s furious, brutal and ultra effective, and once again the show from the stands is extraordinary: this delirious human tide moves and vibrates in unison and constantly indulges in circle pits, wall of death and headbanging of madness. Towards the middle, there will be a keyboard solo or rather a DJ set and the pit turns into a dance floor. It’s fascinating!

I’ll leave before the Encore but, nevertheless, SLIPKNOT delivers an exceptional concert that must have satisfied the most demanding fan.

So, it’s the end of Heavy Week-End 2025! The festival attracted a total of 35,000 spectators, including 16,000 on the last day (according to the journal Est Republican).

And we can say that Heavy Week-End kept all its promises: an excellent and varied line up, real concerts of a high quality, a respected timing, a very good welcome, a great audience and a very good organization. Of course, there are still endless queues for food trucks and toilets, but this is somewhat the case for all festivals on busy days.

The Zenith amphitheater is still as extraordinary as ever. It offers good visibility, fabulous sound and is very easy to access.

Heavy Week-End is going to become a must for all headbangers!

The good news is that the festival returns in 2026 from June 5 to 7. Can’t wait to know the line up but my little finger tells me that it will be just as remarkable!
