En cette deuxième journée du festival Heavy Week-End, la météo s’annonce capricieuse. Si on a hâte d’assister aux quatre concerts programmés ce soir, le matin nous profitons des “Journées de l’Art Nouveau” qui se déroulent ce weekend à Nancy et nous permettent de visiter gratuitement le Musée des Beaux-Arts, la Villa Majorelle et le Musée de l’École de Nancy ! Quelle splendeur ! Je vous en parlerais (photos à l’appui) rapidement.

Nous arrivons sur le site du festival vers 17 h, l’accès est toujours fluide mais la foule est un peu plus dense que hier.

WINGS OF STEEL, VANDEN PLAS, EUROPE et DREAM THEATER sont à l’affiche ce samedi 7 juin.

WINGS OF STEEL – Heavy Metal old school & Glam Rock Elegance

La nouvelle génération du hard rock et du heavy metal glorieux ce sont eux : Wings of Steel. On vous a parlé de nombreuse fois de ce jeune groupe qui a vu le jour à Los Angeles et les retrouver à l’affiche du Heavy Week-end nous a fait grand plaisir.

Il est 17h30 quand le combo arrive sur scène, grands sourires sur les visages et démarre en trombe avec Fall in Line, le parfait morceau d’introduction avec son rythme galopant et son excellente mélodie, suivi de près par l’explosif Liar In Love.

Le groupe américano- européen formé par Leo Unnermark (voix), Parker Halub (guitare), Stefan John-Bailet (guitare rythmique) est rejoint sur scène par le batteur allemand, Marcel Binder et le bassiste belge, Mathieu Trobec.

On est tout de suite interpelée par les riffs brulants livrés par Parker Haloub. En parfait dieu de la guitare avec son look : torse nu, bandana dans les cheveux ultra long, une autre nouée à la guitare et écharpe tête de mort accroché à son pantalon en cuir, il nous fracassé à coup des riffs tranchants et des solos vertigineux, majestueux et élégants l’un plus fantastique que l’autre.

De la même manière la voix magnifique, irréelle de Leo Unnermark nous frappe rapidement avec son timbre ultra puissant. Tantôt chaude et bluesy tantôt aigue et haute perchée, sa gamme vocale est stratosphérique.

Le chanteur charismatique, gestuelle théâtrale arbore lui aussi un bandana dans ses longues cheveux blond et un pantalon en cuir. Une belle chemise blanche fluide à jabot, bottines en cuir et des nombreux magnifiques bijoux complète sa tenue. L’élégance heavy metal d’autre fois est au RDV !

La magnifique balade She Cries avec ses rebondissements, ses riffs rapides et rhythmiques incendiaires séduit tout le monde. Le public les applaudis chaleureusement.

Si le set est composé de morceaux extraits de leur premier album Gates of Twilight (2023) et de leur EP éponyme (2022), on aura le privilège d’écouter un nouveau morceau Winds of Time, qui annonce un nouvel album prévu pour octobre.

Le concert passe super vite et se terminera évidement avec la chanson Wings of Steel, sous une pluie d’ovations largement mérités pour ces musiciens doués et passionnés digne héritières des légendes comme Whitesnake, Queensrÿche ou Led Zeppelin.

Heavy Metal old school, beaucoup d’énergie, de passion et d’élégance Glam Rock, attitude 100% Rock N’Roll ! Le public est conquis !

VANDEN PLAS – Morceaux intenses, Musiciens virtuoses

En 1998 : Vanden Plas, qui avait sorti son deuxième album The God Thing, sillonne les routes d’Europe et de France en 1ère partie de Dream Theater pour le fameux Touring Into Infinity.

11 albums studio et quelques live plus tard, Vanden Plas est devenu l’un des leaders du “prog metal” européen, mais s’est fait rare sur les scènes de l’hexagone. Leur passage au Heavy Week-end marque donc leurs grandes retrouvailles avec Dream Theater et le public français.

Le groupe allemand entre en scène à 18h30, quand la menace de pluie est de plus en plus présente. Le groupe va nous offrir un set incluant de pépites extraites de 7 de leurs 11 albums, dont le dernier The Empyrean Equation of the Long Lost Things, sorti en 2024, un set parfait pour ceux que ne les ont jamais vu en live comme moi (j’avais eu juste un petit aperçu acoustique lors de la conférence de presse Heavy Week-end en avril dernier).

Une bonne incursion dans leur vaste discographie qui mêle le heavy metal au métal progressif et à l’opéra rock dans une décor minimaliste avec juste le logo du groupe en fond de scène. Les musiciens tous habillés sobrement sont assez calmes, plutôt concentres sur leurs instruments et rendent un impeccable travail technique.

De morceaux intenses, bien ficelés et parfaitement exécuté, le groupe allemand captive l’audience qui les écoute attentivement et les applaudis.

Holes in the sky, le superbe morceaux Sanctimonarium ou Cold December Nightde véritables bijoux de prog métal, des morceaux assez longs avec des solos, des changements des rythmiques où toute la virtuosité des musiciens est mise en valeur.

Le front man Andy Kuntz tout sourire, bouge d’un côté à l’autre de la scène en faisant de grands gestes pour faire participer le public assez clairsemé dans la fosse et les gradins. Malheureusement, une pluie intense fera apparition dans la deuxième partie du show faisant partir beaucoup de gens pour s’abriter alors que d’autre resterons courageux pour la fin du set.

EUROPE – Explosion d’énergie, de charme et d’élégance.

Si on dit EUROPE, on dit ??? …. Évidement The Final Countdown , mais l’iconique groupe suédois a beaucoup plus d’autres hits dans son arsenal et il va nous le prouver largement ce soir pendant 75 minutes magistrales sur la scène du Zenith de Nancy.

Je n’avais pas vu EUROPE depuis 2018 à HELLFEST car j’ai malheureusement raté leur show parisien à la Salle Pleyel qui fêtait leurs 40 ans de carrière et a reçu beaucoup d’éloges. J’étais donc très impatiente !

Le show démarre à 20h avec l’électrique On Broken Wings suivi de Rock The Night, un de mes morceaux préféré. Inutile de vous dire que dans le pit photo, je chante et je crie à l’unisson avec le groupe suédois et les fans déchainés dans la fosse tout en essayent de prendre de photos pas trop floues. Ce véritable hymne hard rock de 80’s sera suivi par un morceau plus récent, Walk the Earth, sorti en 2017 qui fait aussi le bonheur des fans.

Le groupe dégage une énorme énergie surtout grâce à la tempête Joey Tempest, le charismatique chanteur qui semble encore plus jeune que dans mes souvenirs de 2018 (sera-t- il victime du même syndrome de rajeunissement que Tom Cruise avec qui d’ailleurs je lui trouve une petite ressemblance ?)

Charmant et élégant avec sa superbe veste bi matière et son écharpe fluide imprimé têtes de mort autour du cou, larges sourires sur son visage, le frontman bouge sans arrêt. On scrute attentivement chaque chorégraphie, chaque sourire, chaque geste ou regard.

Il fait virevolter le pied de son micro, il tournoie avec ou il jette carrément le micro dans l’air et le rattrape sans problème. Il va aussi chanter près de ses camarades. Et il chante merveilleusement bien ! De temps en temps, il s’amuse à dire « Merde » ou « Putain » en faisant le délice de public. Vraiment un Tempest en forme olympique ! La Classe !

Et on ne peut pas dire moins sur ses quatre acolytes : John Norum impérial à la guitare envoie de solos époustouflants, Mic Michaeli nous régale des touches de clavier mélodiques obsédantes, alors que Ian Haugland, un peu caché derrière la batterie et par ses grandes lunettes de soleil et John Leven concentré et très sérieux à la basse assurent brillamment la section rythmique.

On a à faire aux 5 membres originaux du groupe, il y a une évidente complicité et l’alchimie dans l’air ! Ces 5 -là se connaissent par cœur et ensemble dégagent une énergie incroyable !

En total, 14 morceaux seront enchainés à la perfection, des hymnes intemporels comme Carrie (l’une des ballades les plus populaires du groupe), Open Your Heart, Hold Your Head Up ou War of Kings au plus grand bonheur de fans qui se massent de plus en plus nombreux devant la scène, chantent les bras en l’air et ovationnent bruyamment après chaque morceau. La pluie s’invite à un moment donné mais personne ne baisse le bras, on enfile les ponchos et on continue.

Les hits Superstitious et Cherokee seront interprétés avec la même énergie stupéfiante.  

Et forcément le final en apothéose avec le méga hit, The Final Countdown. Quand la célèbre et si reconnaissable intro au synthé resonne dans l’amphithéâtre de Nancy, tout le monde est debout les téléphones dans les airs. Personnellement, j’ai la chair de poule et je ne dois pas être la seule. Joey fait chanter la foule qui répond avec enthousiasme. Les fans rebondissent et chantent à tue-tête tout au long du morceau. Il n’y a pas l’hymne plus fédérateur. Un Final Epique qui s’achève dans énorme salve de cris et d’applaudissements !

Concert fabuleux, groupe magistral avec un Joey Tempest royal et l’ambiance impeccable. Honnêtement, je ne m’attendais pas à une telle explosion d’énergie, de charme et d’élégance. Quel concert ! Quelle grosse claque ! Mon concert préféré du festival jusqu’à là.

Si je ne suis pas allée voir Europe sur scène souvent, maintenant j’attends leur prochaine venue avec Grande impatience !

La nuit tombe sur Nancy et même si le set d’EUROPE nous a bien réchauffé, la froideur de cette soirée de juin se fait de plus en plus ressenti.

DREAM THEATER – Le métal progressif au sommet de son art

A 22h, il est enfin le temps pour la tête d’affiche, DREAM THEATER de monter sur scène.

Le groupe mythique américain spécialiste du « prog metal » a aussi fêté récemment les 40 ans de carrière avec une tournée triomphale et a sorti un superbe 16 ème album, Parasomnia, en février dernier. Et si à cela on rajoute le retour du batteur Mike Portnoy, co-fondateur du groupe, auprès de ses acolytes James LaBrie (chant), John Petrucci (guitare), John Myung (basse) et Jordan Rudess (claviers), voilà autant de raisons pour les fans de d’empresser devant la scène du Zenith de Nancy.

Avant que le groupe arrive sur scène, on assiste à une projection audiovisuelle futuriste qui nous embarque dans une rétrospective de leur carrière à travers des visuelles exceptionnelles de leurs albums.

Night Terror, extrait du dernier album, a la mission de donner le ton à ce concert qui sera placé sous le signe de la virtuosité musicale.

Il faut savoir que les concerts de Dream Theater durent en général trois heures (avec de morceaux très longs qui peuvent durer jusqu’à 20 minutes) et ce soir, ils ont le droit à seulement une heure et demie, un vrai challenge pour construire le set list.

S’ils démarrent avec un nouveau morceau, la suite sera un parfait mélange de différentes époques du groupe, soigneusement sélectionné qui démontre l’évolution du groupe :  des extraits des albums emblématiques comme Metropolis Part 2 (1999), Octavarium (2005), Train of Thought (2003), Images and Words (1992) ou Parasomnia (2025)

On est toute de suite subjugués par les interprétations exceptionnelles des musiciens : le barbu- chevelu John Petrucci est magistral à la guitare : très concentré, il joue avec précision et minutie, tout comme John Myung extraordinaire à la basse, concerté et extrêmement sérieux, il lève à peine le regard de ses cordes.

Jordan Rudess, le magicien du synthé, joue de ses claviers spectaculaires qui s’inclinent, tournent ou changent de couleur et des motifs, nous permettant de voir sa manière de jouer sous plusieurs angles.

La batterie immense de Mike Portnoy, tout aussi fascinante trône au milieu de la scène et si on a un peu du mal à le voir, le très sympathique batteur se lève souvent pour saluer la foule.

La voix claire et mélodique de James LaBrie vient se rajouter à ce beau monde. Très en forme, il se lance dans des headbangings, se déplace sur toute la scène pour encourager le public. Il s’éclipse souvent en backstage pour laisser libre champ à ces camarades.Mention spéciale pour ses magnifiques bijoux.

De riffs plus agressifs ou plus lyriques, saccadés ou sinueuse, des solos vertigineux ou atmosphériques, des interludes rapides ou plus slow vont s’entrelacer avec les frappes phénoménales de la batterie, des rhythmique complexes, des claviers intenses ou éthérées. Des nombreux changements de tempos, on est entrainés dans une spirale de sonorités exaltantes ou plus mélancoliques. C’est une démonstration magistrale de technicité musicale. Le métal progressif au sommet de son art.

Under A Glass Moon nous ébloui avec son solo emblématique de Petrucci alors que Panic Attack permet à la section rythmique de se déchainer.

Peruvian Skies qui intègre quelques riffs de Wish You Were Here de Pink Floyd et aussi un petit passage de Wherever I May Roam de Metallica sera largement apprécié par le public.

C’est vrai que certains passages peuvent paraitre une peu longues et ce n’est pas toute le monde qui apprécie surtout si on a froid et on est fatigués, mais le public connaisseur et admiratif écoute religieusement happé par cette leçon de virtuosité et applaudi chaleureusement.

Le son est encore une fois parfait et les lumières sont magnifiques. De temps en temps, des lasers traversent le ciel et se projettent sur les arbres qui entourent l’amphithéâtre du Zenith. Des vidéos cinématographiques accompagnent aussi chaque chanson.

Pull Me Under va clôturer parfaitement cette soirée inoubliable.

DREAM THEATER montre encore une fois sa grandeur et sa parfaite maitrise en matière de métal progressif.

Personnellement, je ne suis pas grand fan de la prog, mais j’ai apprécié pleinement ce show extraordinaire.

Une deuxième journée intense qui tient toutes ses promesses marqué par un show magistral d’EUROPE, pour l’instant mon grand favori du festival.

On this second day of Heavy Weekend, the weather looks capricious. If we are excited to attend the four concerts scheduled tonight, in the morning we take advantage of the “Art Nouveau Days” which take place this weekend in Nancy and allow us to visit the Museum of Beaux – Arts, the Villa Majorelle and the Museum of Ecole de Nancy for free! What a splendour! I’ll tell you about it (with photos) quickly.

We arrive at the Zenith around 5 p.m., the access is still fluid, but the crowd is a little bit denser.

WINGS OF STEEL, VANDEN PLAS, EUROPE and DREAM THEATER are on the festival line up this Saturday, June 7th.

WINGS OF STEEL – Heavy Metal Old school & Glam Rock Elegance

The new generation of hard rock and glorious heavy metal is them: Wings of Steel. We’ve told you many times about this young band founded in Los Angeles and finding them in the lineup of the Heavy Week-End made us very happy.

It’s 5:30 p.m. when the combo arrives on stage, big smiles on their faces and starts with a banger: Fall in Line, the perfect introductory track with its galloping rhythm and excellent melody, followed closely by the awesome Liar In Love.

The American European band formed by Leo Unnermark (vocals), Parker Halub (guitar), Stefan John-Bailet (rhythm guitar) is joined on stage by the German drummer, Marcel Binder and the Belgian bassist, Mathieu Trobec.

We are immediately challenged by the burning riffs delivered by Parker Haloub.As the perfect god of the guitar with his look: shirtless, bandana in his ultra-long hair and another one tied to the guitar and skull scarf hanging from his leather pants, he smashes us with sharp riffs and vertiginous, majestic and elegant solos, one more fantastic than the other.

In the same way, Leo Unnermark’s magnificent, unreal voice quickly hits us with his ultra-powerful timbre. Sometimes warm and bluesy, sometimes high-pitched, his vocal range is stratospheric.

The charismatic, theatrical singer also wears a bandana in his long blond hair and leather pants. A beautiful flowing white frilled shirt, leather ankle boots and many beautiful jewels completes his outfit. The heavy metal elegance of yesteryear!

The magnificent She Cries, a ballad with lot of twists, fast riffs and incendiary rhythms seduces everyone. The audience applauded them warmly.

While the set is made up of tracks from their debut album Gates of Twilight (2023) and their eponymous EP (2022), we will have the privilege of listening to a new track Winds of Time, which announces a new album scheduled for October.

The concert goes by very quickly and will obviously the last song is Wings of Steel, under a shower of well-deserved ovations for these gifted and passionate musicians worthy heirs of legends such as Whitesnake, Queensrÿche or Led Zeppelin.

Old school heavy metal, a lot of energy, passion and Glam Rock elegance, 100% Rock N’Roll attitude! The public is won over!

VANDEN PLAS – Intense melodies, Virtuoso Musicians

In 1998: Vanden Plas, who had released his second album The God Thing, travels the roads of Europe and France as the opening act for Dream Theater for the famous Touring Into Infinity.

11 studio albums and lots of live shows later, Vanden Plas has become one of the leaders of European “prog metal», but has been rare on the stages of France. Their appearance at the Heavy Weekend marks their great reunion with Dream Theater and the French audience.

The German band takes the stage at 6:30 p.m., when the threat of rain is more and more present. The band will offer us a set including songs from 7 of their 11 albums, including the latest The Empyrean Equation of the Long Lost Things, released in 2024, the perfect set for those who have never seen them live like me (I had just a small acoustic glimpse during the Heavy Weekend press conference last April).

A good incursion into their vast discography that mixes heavy metal with progressive metal and opera rock.

The stage is minimalist with just the band’s logo as decoration and the musicians all dressed soberly are quite calm, rather focused on their instruments and do an impeccable technical job.

With intense, well-crafted and perfectly executed songs, the German band captivates the audience who listen attentively and applaud them.

Holes in the sky, the superb tracks Sanctimonarium or Cold December Night real jewels of prog metal, quite long tracks with solos, rhythmic changes where all the virtuosity of the musicians is highlighted.

The smiling frontman Andy Kuntz moves from one side of the stage to the other, making big gestures to get the rather sparse audience in the pit to participate. Unfortunately, a heavy rain will start in the second part of the show and many people will leave while others will stay brave for the end of the set.

EUROPE – An explosion of energy, charm and elegance.

If we say EUROPE, we say ??? …. Obviously The Final Countdown , but the iconic Swedish band has many more hits in its arsenal and it will prove it to us tonight for 75 masterful minutes on the stage of the Zenith in Nancy.

I hadn’t seen EUROPE since 2018 at HELLFEST because I unfortunately missed their Parisian show at the Salle Pleyel which was celebrating their 40th anniversary of career and received a lot of goods reviews. So, I was very impatient!

The show starts at 8pm with the electric On Broken Wings followed by Rock The Night, one of my favorite tracks from their discography. Needless to say, in the pit photo, I sing and scream in unison with the Swedish band and the fans unleashed in the pit while trying to take pictures that are not too blurry. This true hard rock anthem of the 80’s will be followed by a more recent track, Walk the Earth, released in 2017 which is also a fan favorite.

The band gives off a huge energy especially thanks to the stormy Joey Tempest, the charismatic singer who seems even younger than in my memories of 2018 (is he a victim of the same rejuvenation syndrome as Tom Cruise with whom I find a little resemblance?)

Charming and elegant with his superb bi-material jacket and his flowing skull print scarf around his neck, wide smiles on his face, the frontman moves non-stop. We carefully scrutinize each choreography, each smile, each gesture or gaze.

He twirls the foot of his microphone, he spins with it or he throws the microphone in the air and catches it without any problem. He also sang alongside his classmates. And he sings wonderfully! From time to time, he has fun saying in French “Shit” or “Fuck” while delighting the audience. Truly a Tempest in Olympic shape! What a Class!

And we can’t say less about his four acolytes: John Norum imperial on guitar sends breathtaking solos, Mic Michaeli treats us to haunting melodic keyboard keys, while Ian Haugland, a little bit hidden behind the drums and by his large sunglasses and John Leven concentrated and very serious on bass together brilliantly ensure the rhythm section.

We have here the 5 original members of the band, and there is an obvious complicity and chemistry in the air! These 5 know each other by heart and together exude an incredible energy!

In total, 14 tracks will be played to perfection, timeless anthems such as Carrie (one of the band’s most popular ballads), Open Your Heart, Hold Your Head Up or War of Kings to the delight of fans who gather more and more in front of the stage, sing with their arms in the air and give a loud ovation after each song. The rain comes at some point, but no one gives up, we put on the rain ponchos and we continue.

The hits Superstitious and Cherokee will be performed with the same astounding energy. 

And of course the finale in apotheosis with the mega hit, The Final Countdown. When the famous and so recognizable synth intro resonates in the amphitheater of Nancy, everyone is standing with phones in the air. Personally, I have goosebumps and I can’t be the only one. Joey makes the crowd sing, and they respond enthusiastically.

Fans bounce and sing at the top of their lungs throughout the track. There is no more unifying anthem han this one! An Epic Final that ends in a huge salvo of screams and applause!

Fabulous concert, masterful band with a royal Joey Tempest and impeccable atmosphere. Honestly, I didn’t expect such an explosion of energy, charm and elegance. What a concert! What a big slap! My favorite concert of the festival so far.

If I haven’t been to see Europe on stage often, now I’m waiting for the next possibility to see them with great impatience!

Night falls on Nancy and even if the set of EUROPE has warmed us up, the coldness of this June evening is felt more and more.

DREAM THEATER – Progressive metal at the top of its ART

At 10 p.m., it’s finally time for the headliner, DREAM THEATER, to take the stage.

The mythical American band specializing in “prog metal” also recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of their career with a triumphant tour and released also a superb 16th new album, Parasomnia, last February. And if we add to that the return of drummer Mike Portnoy, co-founder of the band, who joined his mates James LaBrie (vocals), John Petrucci (guitar), John Myung (bass) and Jordan Rudess (keyboards), these are all reasons for fans to hurry in front of the stage of the Zenith in Nancy.

Before the band arrives on stage, we watch a futuristic audiovisual projection that show us on a retrospective of their career through exceptional visuals of their albums.

Night Terror, taken from the last album, has the mission to set the tone for this concert which will be placed under the sign of musical virtuosity.

You should know that Dream Theater concerts usually last three hours (with very long songs that can last up to 20 minutes) and tonight, they are only allowed to have a show of one hour and a half, so they had to choose the right songs.

If they start with a new track, the rest will be a perfect mix of different eras of the band, carefully selected that demonstrates the evolution of the band: excerpts from iconic albums such as Metropolis Part 2 (1999), Octavarium (2005), Train of Thought (2003), Images and Words (1992) or Parasomnia (2025)

We are immediately captivated by the exceptional interpretations of the musicians: the bearded and hairy John Petrucci is masterful on the guitar: very concentrated, he plays with precision and meticulousness, just like John Myung, extraordinary on the bass, concentrated and extremely serious, he barely looks up from his strings.

Jordan Rudess, the synth wizard, plays his spectacular keyboards that tilt, rotate or change color and patterns, allowing us to see his way of playing from several angles.

Mike Portnoy’s huge drums, just as fascinating, sits in the middle of the stage and if we have a little trouble seeing him, the very nice drummer often gets up to greet the crowd.

James LaBrie’s clear and melodic voice is added to this beautiful world. Very fit, he launches into headbangings, moves all over the stage to encourage the audience. He often slips backstage to give free rein to his comrades. Special mention for his  beautiful jewelry.

More aggressive or more lyrical, jerky or sinuous riffs, dizzying or atmospheric solos, fast or slower interludes will intertwine with phenomenal drum strikes, complex rhythmics, intense or ethereal keyboards. From the many changes of tempo, we are drawn into a spiral of exhilarating or more melancholic sounds. It is a masterful demonstration of musical technicality. Progressive metal at the top of its ART.

Under A Glass Moon dazzles us with its emblematic Petrucci solo while Panic Attack allows the rhythm section to be unleashed.

Peruvian Skies which incorporates some riffs of  Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here and also a small passage of  Metallica’s Wherever I May Roam will be widely appreciated by the audience.

It’s true that some passages can seem a bit long and not everyone appreciates it, especially if you’re cold and tired, but the connoisseur and admiring audience listens religiously this lesson of virtuosity and applauds warmly.

The sound is once again perfect and the lights are beautiful. From time to time, lasers cross the sky and project themselves on the trees that surround the Zenith amphitheater. Cinematic videos also accompany each song.

Pull Me Under will perfectly close this unforgettable evening.

DREAM THEATER shows once again its greatness and its perfect mastery in progressive metal.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of prog, but I fully enjoyed this extraordinary show.

An intense second day that keeps all its promises marked by a masterful EUROPE’s show , for the moment my big favorite of the festival.
