Chapeaux Fantastiques, New Romantics, 80’s vibes, Londres, Haute Couture, Paris…aujourd’hui on fait un tour en photos et en musique dans la magnifique exposition Stephen Jones : « Chapeaux d’Artiste »
Présentée au Palais Galliera à Paris – Stephen Jones : « Chapeaux d’Artiste » -retrace 45 ans de carrière du talentueux Stephen Jones, le plus « frency » des modistes anglais à travers près de 400 œuvres : plus de 170 chapeaux, des archives du créateur (dessins préparatoires, photographies, extraits de défilés…) ainsi qu’une quarantaine de silhouettes complètes avec des vêtements et des chapeaux.

Formé à la fameuse Saint Martin’s School of Art de Londres, Stephen Jones côtoie fin 70s le mouvement de Nouveaux Romantiques (New Romantics), un courant musical et vestimentaire issue de la scène underground des clubs londoniens inspiré par le punk (qu’il rejette) et le glam rock de David Bowie, Roxy Music ou Marc Bollan.
Il fréquente les soirées organisées par Steve Strange et Rusty Egan, deux membres du groupe Visage, au Blitz Club à Covent Garden où il va rencontrer de figures emblématiques du mouvement comme Kim Bowen, qui deviendra sa muse, le créateur de mode Stephen Linard, Boy George le chanteur de Culture Club ou les membres de Spandau Ballet.
Exubérance, vêtements glamour, maquillages et coiffures extravagantes, la mode des New Romantics l’inspire et il va confectionner des nombreux couvres chefs futuristes et flamboyantes pour ceux qui se nomment les « Blitz Kids » et devient l’un d’eux.
Ces premières créations seront vite remarquées et il va ouvrir sa première boutique dans le sous-sol de la légendaire boutique PX dans Eldel Street pas loin du Blitz.
Lady Diana en personne fera appel à son talent et lui commander des chapeaux et des bérets.
Si ses débuts sont donc marqués par des inspirations artistiques So British, en 1983 le créateur originaire de Liverpool entame son parcours parisien qui sera largement mis en lumière par cette exposition.
Stephen Jones est fasciné par de Paris : son architecture, ses rues, ses créateurs de mode, ses musées et son art de vivre, l’artiste entretient depuis longtemps un lien magnétique avec la Ville Lumière.
Son arrivée dans la capitale et sa collaboration avec les maisons parisiennes ont en effet bouleversé sa vision de la mode et sa création.
A ses premières collaborations en 1984 avec Jean Paul Gaultier et Thierry Mugler vont se rajouter au des nombreuses autres maisons prestigieuses. Il tisse progressivement des liens étroits avec Christian Dior, John Galiano, Claude Montana, Vivienne Westwood, Comme des Garçons, Walter Van Beirendonck, Louis Vuitton… il va devenir une figure incontournable de la haute couture française, un véritable génie du chapeaux.
Des chapeaux oiseaux, à plumes, à fleurs, en satin ou en feutre, sobres ou délicieusement colorés, des bérets français inspires par la marinière, ou des chapeaux inspires par le Haut-de-forme anglais, Stephan Jones crée des pièces uniques, originales et audacieuses.
Des véritables sculptures minimalistes ou terriblement extravagantes, spectaculaires et sophistiquées, les chapeaux deviennent des œuvres d’art dans les mains de Stephen Jones. Sans conteste, il est l’un des plus grands modistes contemporains. Une exposition fun et captivante ! Stephen Jones : You rock !

Presented by the Palais Galliera in Paris, Stephen Jones: “Chapeaux d’Artiste” retraces the 45-year career of the talented Stephen Jones, the most “frency” of English milliners through nearly 400 works: more than 170 hats, the designer’s archives (preparatory drawings, photographs, excerpts from fashion shows, etc.) as well as some forty silhouettes complete with clothes and hats.
Discover some images of the exhibition, our favorite hats and several New Romantics/New Wave hits from the superb playlist of the exhibition ( created by Stephen Jones himself) which admirably immerses us in this period of creative effervescence of the 80s.
Trained at the famous Saint Martin’s School of Art in London, Stephen Jones rubbed shoulders at the end of the 70s with the New Romantics movement, a musical and clothing movement from the London underground’s club scene inspired by the punk (which the movement rejects) and the glam rock of David Bowie, Roxy Music or Marc Bollan.
He attended parties organized by Steve Strange and Rusty Egan, two members of the band Visage, at the Blitz Club in Covent Garden where he met emblematic figures of the movement such as Kim Bowen, who would become his muse, the fashion designer Stephen Linard, Boy George the singer of Culture Club or the members of Spandau Ballet.
Exuberance, glamorous clothes, extravagant make-up and hairstyles, the fashion of the New Romantics inspired him and he went on to make many futuristic and flamboyant hats for those who called themselves the “Blitz Kids” and became one of them.
These first creations were quickly noticed, and he opened his first store in the basement of the legendary PX store on Enldell Street not far from the Blitz.
Lady Diana herself called on his talent and commissioned hats and berets from him.
If his beginnings were marked by So British artistic inspirations, in 1983 the Liverpool-born designer began his Parisian career, which will be largely highlighted by this exhibition.
Stephen Jones is fascinated by Paris: its architecture, its streets, its fashion designers, its museums and its art of living, the artist has long maintained a magnetic link with the City of Light.
His arrival in the capital and his collaboration with Parisian houses have indeed changed his vision of fashion and his creation. To his first collaborations in 1984 with Jean Paul Gaultier and Thierry Mugler will be quickly added many other prestigious houses.
He gradually forged close links with Christian Dior, John Galiano, Claude Montana, Vivienne Westwood, Comme des Garçons, Walter Van Beirendonck, Louis Vuitton, Elsa Schiaparelli… He would become a key figure in French haute couture.
Hats like birds, feathered, floral, satin or felt hats sober or deliciously colored, French berets inspired by the mariniere, or hats inspired by the top hat of England, Stephan Jones creates unique, original and daring pieces.
From minimalist sculptures to terribly extravagant, spectacular and sophisticated, hats become piece of Art in the hands of Stephen Jones. No doubt, he is one of the greatest contemporary milliners.
