Sorti en août dernier, BIRTHDAY, le 4ème album du groupe suédois BLUES PILLS figure dans notre liste des meilleurs albums de l’année.

Des morceaux énergiques ou plus mélancoliques, des compositions vibrantes et addictives qui s’inscrivent dans un registre blues rock psychédélique agrémenté des jolies touches pop rock, ce nouvel opus nous offre des belles sonorités vintage et très modernes en même temps.

Formé par Elin Larsson (chant), Zack Anderson (guitare), André Kvarnström (batterie) et Kristoffer Schander (basse), le groupe suédois est actuellement en tournée européenne qui passera par Paris, le 16/10/2024 à La Maroquinerie, par Toulouse, le 13/12/2024 au Metronum et par Lyon, le 14/12/2024 au Marché Gare.

J’ai eu le grand plaisir de m’entretenir via Zoom avec Elin, Zack et André, l’occasion de faire connaissance avec la formation suédoise, parler de la création de Birthday, de leur inspirations, de la maternité et du Rock N’ Roll !

Comment l’aventure Blues Pills a démarré ?

Zack : Avec la rencontre d’Elin et moi en Californie. J’y vivais à l’époque, et elle était de passage. On s’est rencontré et on a commencé à écrire des chansons ensemble et ça a vraiment bien marché tout de suite.

Peu de temps après, j’ai déménagé en Suède, on a démarré le groupe et on a commencé à faire des concerts.

D’où vient le nom de Blues Pills?

Zack : à nos débuts, on essayait de faire de la musique très inspirée des années 60 et 70 et du blues rock psychédélique. On aimait vraiment ce style et on l’aime toujours.

Et il y a avait un blog sur Internet qui partageait beaucoup de disques très rares, des choses qu’on ne pouvait pas trouver ailleurs. J’ai découvert beaucoup de musique grâce à ce blog qui s’appelait les Blues Pills. C’était le blog d’un gars en Allemagne qui est l’organisateur du festival Freak Valley. Depuis, on l’a rencontré pour de vrai et on a joué dans son festival. Et en fait, il a dit qu’il était d’accord pour que nous prenions ce nom.

Elin : Dison qu’on l’a un peu volé ce nom

Vous sortez votre quatrième album, Birthday, en quoi le processus de création a été différent par rapport aux autres albums ?

Zack : Je dirais que la principale différence est que cet album s’est fait beaucoup plus rapidement que les trois albums précédents.

Je sais qu’il y a des groupes qui vont en studio et l’album et terminent un album en un jour, mais ce n’était vraiment pas notre cas. On était plutôt dans la catégorie des groupes qui mettent un an pour enregistrer un album. 

Mais cette fois-ci, c’était notre premier album qui est allé assez vite. On l’a fait plusieurs sessions réparties, mais au total, on a passé environ un mois à écrire les chansons, ensuite on a passé environ trois ou quatre semaines en studio.

Une autre chose différente avec cet album, c’est qu’on a travaillé avec un nouveau producteur, Freddy Alexander. Freddy est connu pour faire plus de la musique pop, donc c’était un mélange intéressant. Ces nouvelles influences combinées avec notre musique rock et ça a apporté une touche fraîche à notre musique. On a obtenu un bon mélange de sons rétro et vintage, mais qui sonne très moderne en même temps.

Un artiste en particulier qui vous a influencé sur cet album ?

Elin : Et je pense qu’on a eu différentes inspirations, selon les chansons. Je pense que pour Piggyback Ride, on s’est un peu inspirés des Gorillaz et on a essayé de faire les mêmes effets qu’eux.  Mais tu sais, parfois, on se dit qu’on devrait faire une chanson inspirée par The Strokes par exemple et finalement qu’elle se termine par quelque chose totalement différent. C’est intéressant de voir comment une chanson commence et comment ça finit. C’était très facile cette fois-ci d’écrire des chansons et à les terminer. C’était super rapide, ce qui est génial.

Zack : Je dirais qu’avec cet album, les influences étaient un peu moins évidentes que dans le passé d’une certaine manière. Parce qu’à nos débuts dans le groupe, on avait des influences très claires. On était obsédés par Fleetwood Mac ou Peter Green et on essayait vraiment de sonner comme eux. Avec cet album, je ne pense pas qu’on essayait consciemment de sonner exactement comme quelque chose d’autre. Peut-être qu’inconsciemment on a été influencé par ce qu’on écoutait mais on n’a pas essayé de faire un son spécifique. On a juste écrit tout ce qui est sorti de nous mêmes.

Elin, tu as découvert que tu étais enceinte pendant l’écriture et l’enregistrement de l’album. Comment est-ce que cet heureux événement t’a impacté toi et le groupe dans la réalisation de l’album ?

Elin : J’ai été très surprise parce que ma grossesse n’était pas du tout prévue et en fait, je voulais continuer comme avant. Et je dirais que c’était toujours moi en studio mais pas trop concentrée ou trop réfléchie parce que j’avais quelque chose d’autre plus important sur quoi me concentrer, même si bien sûr l’album était important.

En quelque sort j’absorbais toutes les choses positives lorsque j’écrivais de la musique et que j’enregistrais.

A la fin, pour les deux dernières chansons de l’album, j’étais enceinte de neuf mois, donc c’était assez difficile à chanter parce que à ce stade de la grossesse, les poumons sont repoussés, donc j’avais du mal à respirer.

Et moi, qui chante très puissant j’ai besoin d’être au top avec ma respiration, donc c’était un peu plus difficile. Et puis, le manque de sommeil à la fin parce que j’étais énorme et j’avais du mal à dormir. 

Mais sinon, j’ai eu une super grossesse. Je ne devrais pas me plaindre parce que j’ai entendu beaucoup de mauvaises histoires des personnes qui ont vécu des grossesses difficiles.

Donc, j’ai continué à jouer et j’ai continué à faire des concerts et on a fini d’enregistrer l’album, donc c’était génial. Et puis j’ai eu mon bébé.

Elin : Merci.

Vous avez intitulé l’album Birthday, qui est aussi le titre de la première chanson qui raconte un incident sexiste survenu à Mexico. C’était à la fête de ton anniversaire Elin et au restaurant un serveur a décidé de gâcher la fête. Vous pouvez nous en dire plus ?

Elin : La chanson est inspirée effectivement de cet événement, une fête d’anniversaire qui a pris une mauvaise tournure. On a passé un super moment au Mexique, c’est juste ce gars qui était un connard. Donc, quand on est rentré à la maison, on a voulu écrire notre propre histoire à ce sujet.

Mais l’album ne porte pas le nom de cette chanson en particulier, mais évoque plutôt tout le processus pendant lequel j’étais enceinte : les enregistrements et la séance photo quand j’étais enceinte de 8 mois. Le nom de l’album BIRTHDAY symbolise plutôt la naissance de mon fils.

Avez -vous, chacun d’entre vous une chanson favorite, plus importante sur l’album ?

André : Pour moi, ça varie de temps en temps. Mais je pense que l’un de mes préférés est Holding Me Back, parce qu’il a ce vibe grunge, ce que nous n’avons peut-être pas fait avant.

Zack : C’est toujours très difficile d’en choisir un seul, mais je pense que ça change aussi pour moi parce que les chansons sont tellement différentes sur cet album, donc ça dépend un peu de l’humeur dans laquelle je me trouve.

En ce moment, je dirais que What Has This Life Done To You est ma préférée. Il y a des paroles plus personnelles, et c’est aussi un peu un style qu’on n’a jamais fait auparavant. J’aime beaucoup cette chanson.

C’était très facile cette fois-ci d’écrire des chansons…On n’a pas essayé de faire un son spécifique. On a juste écrit tout ce qui est sorti de nous mêmes.

Elin : c’est pareil pour moi, ça varie beaucoup, mais je dirais que le Piggyback Ride est l’un de mes préférés parce que c’est tellement mélangé et inattendue.

Ça tourne, ça part dans tous les sens. Elle est tellement cool. On a essayé des effets sympas dessus. Ce sont les cochons sauvages qui vivent ici près de chez moi qui m’ont m’inspiré. Il ya une ambiance exaltante dans cette chanson.

On dirait que Top of the Sky est une chanson d’amour, mais il semble qu’elle soit inspirée par un influenceur chinois. Quelle est sin histoire ?

Zack : J’ai regardé ce court documentaire sur YouTube sur cet influenceur qui a escaladé des immeubles en Chine et qui finalement est tombé et il est mort.

Ça a m’a inspiré pour la chanson, parce que c’était un peu comme si je voulais comprendre ses motivations pour faire ça.

Je suis sûr qu’il aimait le faire, mais j’ai juste senti que cela symbolisait le monde dans lequel on vit avec les médias sociaux et les smartphones et tout ce que les gens font pour attirer l’attention et des likes tout le temps. 

Et je l’ai mis dans la perspective de quelqu’un qui recherche cette attention et qui meurt pendant qu’il se filme en direct sur Internet.

Et puis, c’est devenu une chanson qui a un double sens parce que selon la façon dont tu l’écoutes et tu interprète les paroles, ça pourrait être une ballade d’amour.

Mais en fait, quand on l’a écrite, les paroles “I’ll go anywhere for you, my love
Nothin’ I wouldn’t do for you, my love” c’est l’influenceur qui dit qu’il fera n’importe quoi pour attirer d’attention sur Internet.

I Don’t Want to Get Back On That Horse Again, c’est une chanson extraordinaire, poignante, pleine d’émotion. De quoi parle-t-elle de cette chanson ?

Elin : En fait cette, cette chanson est une reprise. Quand j’étais enceinte et pendant les enregistrements, j’ai commencé à penser à l’avenir, à ce que je voulais faire avec mon enfant après l’accouchement, comme ce que je voulais lui montrer par exemple un disque, un instrument ou un endroit…un peu tout ce je voulais lui montre dans ce monde, tu vois ?

Et en quelque sorte, je me suis rappelé pourquoi j’ai commencé à aimer la musique et faire de la musique ou à chanter et à jouer dans un groupe.

Je suis revenu à ce groupe local de ma ville natale en Suède. Un groupe qui s’appele Grande Roses et que j’allais voir quand j’étais adolescente à chaque fois qu’ils jouaient.

I Don’t Want to Get Back On That Horse Again c’est leur chanson dont je suis tombée amoureuse. D’une certaine manière, c’est grâce à eux que je fais probablement ce que je fais.

Pour moi, c’est le noyau de tout cet album. Avec Birthday, on s’est rappelé pourquoi on fait ce qu’on fait.

Mais je ne suis pas vraiment sûre de quoi parle la chanson, mais mon idée est que quoi qu’il fasse comme un travail ou une relation, il ne veut plus le faire. Peut-être que je devrais lui demander de quoi elle parle.  Cette chanson est tellement géniale. Elle n’existe pas sur Spotify, mais ils l’ont juste sorti récemment sur YouTube.

Ce sont des mecs géniaux. Et oui, milles merci à eux, car c’est grâce à eux que je fais cela.

Vous partez en tournée en octobre dans des salles et de clubs plutôt petits. Pourquoi ce choix en particulier ?

Zack : Je pense qu’après Corona, moins de gens vont voir des concerts et aussi on n’a pas tourné depuis si longtemps, donc il est logique de revenir et de commencer dans des salles plus petites. 

Mais en même temps, on aime jouer dans des petites salles car le public est plus proche et je pense que ce sera sympa de pouvoir parler à nouveau aux fans. Mais certainement, l’été prochain, on fera beaucoup de festivals.

Elin, tu pourras nous parler de cette superbe robe bleue que tu portes sur la pochette de l’album et dans les videos.

Elin : Ah oui, c’est une robe de location. J’ai l’habitude de porter des vêtements de créateurs sur scène, mais comme j’étais très enceinte, je ne rentrais en quoi que ce soit, donc on est allés dans cet immense entrepôt à Stockholm, je ne me souviens pas du nom mais ils louent des vêtements pour les films et les acteurs.

Ils ont des zones spéciales par décennies et bien sûr, on est allés dans la zone 70s et j’ai trouvé cette robe vintage des années 70. Elle est super sympa. Et j’en ai fait une sorte de réplique, inspirée de cela là mais avec des pantalons pour les concerts d’été. Comme je surfe sur la foule, je ferais mieux de porter des pantalons car sinon je vais montrer ma culotte.

Comment préparez-vous la tournée ?  Est-ce difficile de choisir les chansons pour le set list maintenant avec 4 albums à intégrer ? 

André : On répète beaucoup, pour qu’on puisse ressentir les chansons. Il y a de nouveaux sentiments maintenant avec le quatrième album. C’est sûr que la liste des chansons à choisir est longue.

Elin : pour les concerts en tête d’affiche, on jouera probablement minimum 90 minutes, donc on va surement faire un mélange de chansons de tous les albums. Le seul album qui est assez difficile à jouer en live est The Lady in Gold parce qu’il ya beaucoup de overdubs et de chœurs. C’est difficile de le faire sonner cool en live.

Elin comment est-ce que tu entretien ta voix. Est-ce que tu as une routine pour rester en forme ?

Elin : j’ai fait une petite pause dans l’entraînement parce que j’ai eu des problèmes avec mes jambes après la grossesse, mais je m’entraîne généralement : je fais de la course à pied, des exercices cardio, des haltérophilies. Et j’ai une espèce de pipe en verre qui vient de Finlande. Je pense que ça date des années 60. Alors je souffle dedans comme dans l’eau et je me réchauffe la voix. Cela ressemble un peu à une pipe à crack, mais ce n’est pas le cas. Cela aide vraiment quand vous êtes en tournée ou en studio quand vous enregistrez ou vous répétez pendant des heures dans le studio. C’est donc un conseil que je peux donner. Sinon, manger sainement, vivre sainement et boire beaucoup d’eau.

Un dernier mot sur l’album ou autre ?

Elin : Jetez-y un coup d’œil. Dansez et chantez sur lui, éclatez -vous et nous espérons vous voir lors de notre tournée à l’automne. Vive la France !

Released in August, BIRTHDAY, the 4th album of the Swedish band, BLUES PILLS is in our list of “best of” the year.

Energetic or more melancholic tracks, vibrant and addictive compositions with a psychedelic blues rock style embellished with some beautiful pop rock touches, the album sound vintage but very modern at the same time.

Formed by Elin Larsson (vocals), Zack Anderson (guitar), André Kvarnström (drums) and Kristoffer Schander (bass), the Swedish band is currently in the middle of a big European tour that will pass through Paris, on 16/10/2024 at La Maroquinerie, through Toulouse, on 13/12/2024 at the Metronum and through Lyon, on 14/12/2024 at the Marché Gare. 

I had the great pleasure of chatting via Zoom with Elin, Zack and André, an opportunity to get to know the Swedish band, talk about the creation of Birthday, about their inspirations, about motherhood and Rock N’ Roll!  

Have you swallowed your bluesy rock pills today? Have some BLUES PILLS – the treatment is very effective!

Let’s start with the beginning. How did you guys start the adventure Blues Pills?

Zack : It started when me and Elin met in California. I lived there at the time, and she was just visiting. We met and started to write songs together and it worked really well right away. Not so long after that I moved to Sweden and once I moved, we pretty much started to do the band and we started to get shows and go on tour. It just took off from there.

This name Blues Pills, where did it come from?

Zack: In the beginning, we like really love, I mean, we still love that, but especially when we started the band, we were trying to make music that was very inspired by the 60s and 70s psychedelic blues Rock.

And basically, it was a blog on the Internet that shared a lot of very obscure records and things that you couldn’t find them any other way because it’s such a rare music. So back at that time, I discovered a lot of music, and that blog was called the Blues Pills. It’s the blog of a guy in Germany and he does the Freak Valley festival.

We’ve met him in real life now and we’ve played on his festival. So, he said he’s fine with us taking this name.

Elin : actually, we stole it in a way.

Your fourth album, Birthday is coming up in August.  How was the writing process in comparison with the previous ones?

Zack: The thing that stood out with this album was that it was done faster than any of the other albums, especially the first one.

Actually, for all three 3 previous albums, we spend a long time in the studio. I know there are bands that went one day in the studio and the album is done but we were always the type of band that we would spend a year recording an album.

And this time, it was our first album that went quite fast. I think it we did it in some different sessions spread out but in total, we spent maybe about a month writing songs and then, we spent about three or four weeks in the studio.

So, for us that was a very fast process compared to what we’ve done before and. Also, another thing that was different with this album was that we worked with a new producer: Freddy Alexander. Freddy is known for doing more pop music. So, it was like an interesting blend to have these new influences combined with our rock music. It brought a fresh touch to the music. It gives a nice mixture of retro and vintage sounds, but still sounds modern at the same time.

An artist in particular influenced you in the on this album?

Elin: I think we had a few different ones, depending on songs. It was more like we focus on each song. I think for Piggyback Ride, we got a bit inspired by the Gorillaz and we tried to do some same effects that they had.

But you know sometimes we say, we should make a song inspired by The Strokes and then it ends up in something different. It’s interesting how it starts and how it ends up.

Anway it was very easy this time to keep writing songs and finishing them. It was super-fast, which is awesome.

Zack: I would say that with this album the influences were a bit less obvious in a way. Because in our earlier days in the band, we had very clear influences. We were like obsessed with Fleetwood Mac or Peter Green and we were really trying to sound like that. With this album, I don’t think we were consciously trying to sound exactly like something else. We were just more like subconsciously have influences in the back of your mind probably like what you’ve listened to. We weren’t trying to make a specific sound. We just wrote and whatever came out came out.

Elin, you discovered that you are pregnant during the writing and recording, how this happy event influenced you and the band in the creation of the album?

Elin : I was quite surprised cause my pregnancy wasn’t planned, so I wanted to keep going and it was actually more me not focusing or overthinking so much in the studio, because I had something else that was more important for me at the time, even though the record it’s was important. I was just like taking in all the positive things when writing music and recording.

It was very easy this time to keep writing songs and finishing them….We weren’t trying to make a specific sound. We just wrote and whatever came out came out.

At the end, for the last two last songs for the album, I was in nine months, so that was pretty rough to sing because your lungs are kind of get pushed away, so you have trouble breathing.

And me as a vocalist and singing very powerful, I need to be on top with my breathing, so it was a bit harder. And then the lack of sleep at the end. Because it was very huge and it was hard for me to sleep.

But otherwise, I had a great pregnancy. I should not complain because I’ve heard some many bad stories from some people that have gone through pregnancy. So, I kept playing shows and we finished recording the album, so it was awesome. And then I had my baby.

Elin: Thank you.

You titled the album Birthday, which is also the title of the first song of the album that talk about an incident in Mexico City. It was at your birthday party Elin and at the restaurant a waiter decided to ruin the party. Can you tell us more about it?

Elin: well, I would just say that it was supposed to be a birthday event, but it kind of took a wrong turn. But I mean, this happened in Mexico. We had a great time otherwise in Mexico, only this particular guy that was an asshole, I would say.

So, when we came back, we I wanted to write a story about that to sort of, you know, your own story. But I mean, the album isn’t named after the specific song.

It’s more the whole process when I was pregnant during the recordings and then when we did the photo shoot, I was, you know, 8 months pregnant.

The name of the album, Birthday, is symbolizing my son’s birth.

Do you have a favourite song each of you?

André: It varies from time to time. But I think one of my favourites is Holding Me Back, because it has this grungy feeling to it, which we maybe haven’t done so much earlier.

Zack: It’s always so hard to pick just one, but I think it also for me changes cause the songs are so different on this album, so it depends a bit on the mood I’m in. If I want a rock song or a softer one. But I think right now, I would say like What Has This Life Done To You   is my favourite. It has more personal lyrics, and it has a bit of a style we haven’t done before. I just like that one a lot.

Elin: it’s the same for me, it varies a lot, but I would say Piggyback Ride is one of my favourite ones because it’s so mixed up. You don’t know where this song is going to turn and it’s just so cool. It’s inspired from the wild pigs that live here in where I live.

We tried cool effects on it. It gets you in an uplifting mood, I think.

Top of the Sky looks to be a love ballad, but it looks that it’s inspired by a Chinese influencer

Zack: I watch this short YouTube documentary about this influencer that climbed buildings in China and fell and he died doing that.

This inspired me this song, because in a way, I wanted to understand what motivated him for doing that.

I’m sure he also enjoyed doing it, but I just felt that it symbolized the world that we live in, with social media and smartphones and everything, the fact that people are chasing attention and likes all the time.

And I put that in perspective when someone does something like that and dies while they filmed themselves live on the Internet.

It became a song with double meaning because depending how you listen to it, it could be a love ballad about someone in a  relationship, but actually when we wrote it, the lyrics were like he was singing to craving for attention on the internet and  he would do anything  “I’ll go anywhere for you, my love Nothin’ I wouldn’t do for you, my love”

I Don’t Wanna Get Back On That Horse Again, it’s a full emotion song and a poignant performance. What does this song talk about?

Elin : That song is actually a cover. When I was pregnant and during the recordings, I start to think about the future, like what you want to do with your child after giving birth. And I started to think what record and what instrument, I should show him. I started thinking, we should go there and do that, etc. you know, what I want to show him in this world.

And in a way, I went back to what did I and why I start loving music and doing music and singing and playing in band. And I went back to this local band from my hometown in Sweden, called Grande Roses, whom I went to see every time they played when I was a teenager.

And they have this song I Don’t Wanna Get Back On That Horse Again that I fell in love with. In a way, it’s thanks to them that I’m probably doing what I’m doing.

For me that’s ties the knots for this whole album. With Birthday we go back to everything, to why we’re doing this.

But I’m not really sure what the song is about, I don’t really know what he means but I just think that whatever he is doing a job or a relationship, he doesn’t want to do it anymore.

That’s probably what I would think it’s about, but I haven’t really asked him. Maybe I should do it.  This song is so great. It doesn’t exist on Spotify but they released-on YouTube. They’re great dudes. And yeah, a lot of thanks to them that I’m doing this.

You plan to do a big tour starting with October in rather small clubs and venues. Why this choice?

Zack: I think that after Corona less people are going to shows and like and also, we haven’t toured in such a long time, so it makes sense to come back and start on smaller venues.

But at the same time, we enjoy this because when you play those kinds of venues, you can meet the fans.The audience is closer, so I think it’s going be fun to get to talk to fans again.

But definitely, next summer we will do more festivals.

Elin, let’s talk about that great blue dress that you wear on the album artwork and also in the video.

Elin: Ohh yeah, it’s a rental dress. I usually wear designers’ stuff on stage, but since I was very pregnant and I couldn’t fit in anything we went to this huge warehouse in Stockholm, I do not remember the name, but basically they rent clothes for films and actors.

They have special areas per decades and of course, we I went to the 70s era so I found this vintage dress from the 70s. Super nice. And I actually had made a sort of replica of it but with pants for the shows this summer. As I crowd surf, I better wear pants because otherwise I’m going to show my panties.

So how do you guys prepare the tour?  Is it difficult to pick up the songs for the set list now with 4 albums in your discography?

André: we practice a lot, so we could feel the songs. There are new feelings now with the fourth album, so for sure the list of songs to choose from is long.

Elin:  on headlining tour, we will probably play at least 90 minutes so, we will mix it up from all the albums. The only album that’s pretty hard to play live is The Lady in Gold because there are so many overdubs over it and choirs… it’s the hardest to make sound cool live.

Elin, how do you care about your incredible voice? Do you have a special routine?

Elin: I’m having a break from working out because I’ve had some problems with my legs after the pregnancy, but I usually work out: I do running and cardio exercise and weight lifts. Then I have this vocal pipe from Finland. I think that’s from the 60s. So, I blow and warm up my voice, it’s like blow it into water. It’s like a glass pipe. It looks like a crack pipe, but it’s not. It really helps when you’re on tour or record or practice for hours in the studio. So that’s a tip I can give.

Otherwise, eat healthy and live healthy and drink a lot of water.

Elin: Check out the new album! Dance to and sing with it, rock out through it and we hope to see you on our tour in the fall. Vive la France!
