Tous les ans, Rock en Seine rime avec le retour des vacances. Cette année le festival s’est déroulé entre 21 et 25 août comme d’habitude dans le magnifique Domaine de Saint Cloud, située aux portes de Paris.

Aujourd’hui, on vous propose de faire une incursion détaillée sur une édition historique avec une programmation musicale gargantuesque et éclectique (92 concerts en 5 jours) et un record de fréquentions avec pas moins de 182000 spectateurs !

Comme on s’est tous passionnés cet été pour les Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques, en plus de la programmation musicale, le festival francilien s’est pris aux Jeux Paralympiques (le festival avait obtenu le label Olympiade Culturelle) avec plusieurs événements dédiés, notamment le passage de la flamme sur la Grande Scène le 25 Aout 2024.

Sauf un peu de pluie le samedi, la météo a été très clémente, avec le soleil au RDV et des températures idéales qui ont permis à tous les festivaliers de danser et pogoter devant les concerts, gambader dans les allées du parc, participer à des défis sportifs ou siroter des boissons sur un transat.

On ne va pas vous parler du retour à Rock en Seine 10 ans après, de la diva Lana Del Rey et car on n’a pas pu assister à la première journée qui affichait sold out et une programmation 100% féminine, mais on va vous relater plus ou moins en détail nos aventures sur les 4 jours suivantes.

On démarre donc notre festival jeudi, 22 août avec la sensation de l’année venu d’outre-Manche, The Last Dinner Party. Les cinq filles et le garçon (à la batterie), vont conquérir rapidement le public déjà très nombreux en ce bel début d’après-midi devant la Grande Scène, pas seulement avec leurs sonorités pop punk baroques légers et envoutantes, mais aussi grâce à leur présence scénique élégante.

C’est notamment Abigail Morris, la chanteuse aux faux airs de Freida Khalo qui attire toute notre attention. Habillée d’une magnifique robe bohème à volants, elle danse et se déplace avec grâce sur toute la scène, tout en nous ensorcelant avec de sa voix sublime.   

Le premier album du groupe, Prelude to Ecstasy, salué chaleureusement par la critique sera évidemment présent dans le set list. Elles nous feront aussi deux cadeaux spéciaux pour Rock en Seine : un nouveau titre, Second Best, et une reprise énergique du Call Me de Blondie.

Leur tube Nothing Matters terminera le set avec des milliers de bras en air qui bougent joliment en rythme de la chanson. Dans la foulée, elles ont profité pour fêter sur scène l’anniversaire de la petite sœur de la claviériste.  Magnifique découverte. A revoir.

On enchaine à la Grande Cascade avec les Américains de Dead Poet Society. Le chanteur, Jack Underkofler et sa bande nous offrent un set super énergique, un beau mélange de rock explosif, new wave et électro, avec des chansons accrocheuses et efficaces, extraits en grande partie de leur 2 excellents opus  « ! » (Prononcez ‘The exclamation album’) et Fission.

HURT,.swvrm., Running in cicles enflammeront le public venu en grand nombre. Des quelque circles pits se formeront rapidement et de slams se succéderons tout au long du concert. Quel plaisir de les voir enfin. On passe un excellent moment.

De retour à la Grande Scène pour voir Kasabian. On avait un peu perdu de vue le groupe britannique dernièrement et le départ de Tom Meighan n’avait pas arrangé les choses. C’est donc la première fois qu’on les voit avec seulement Sergio Pizzorno aux commandes.

Le fond de scène est l’arc-en-ciel à l’image de l’artwork de Happenings, le nouvel album sorti en juillet.  Le frontman habillé d’un blouson orange (qui laissera la place à un étonnant T Shirt oversize) guitare ou pas sous les bras arpente la scène sans arrêt, alors que les autres musiciens restent plutôt sagement derrière.

Sergio Pizzorno s’adresse en permanence à la foule pour les inciter à applaudir, chanter ou se faire porter sur les épaules. Puissance, belle énergie et bonne communication avec le public.

Les titres s’enchaînent et ce sont plutôt les vieux hits qui feront le bonheur de fans. La pelouse devant la Grande Scène est bondée. Certes le public des premiers rangs ne sont pas tous de fans de Kasabian (mais plutôt ceux de Maneskin venu tôt pour avoir une bonne place) et ne connaissent pas les paroles par cœur, mais la majorité réagit avec enthousiasme et profite de chaque minute.

Club Foot, Underdog, L.S.F. (Lost Souls Forever), sans oublier Shoot The Runner et Vlad the Impaler transformeront la pelouse en dance floor.

Direction à la Cascade pour voir Franck Carter et les Rattlesnakes qui nous offrira comme à son habitude une show punchy, plein d’énergie avec des circles pits et des slammeurs en grande quantité. Sa réputation de bête de scène reste inchangée et on pourra dire la même chose de ses acolytes.

Franck descend dans la foule dès le début de concert et se fera porter par des fans joyeux. Il se fera filmera lui-même avec de téléphones ramassés dans la foule à plusieurs reprises et va enchainer les bavardages, toujours aussi soucieux que tout le monde se sent bien et profite du concert dans les meilleures conditions.

Quant à la set list, le dernier album Dark Rainbow sera mis à l’honneur sans oublier des classiques comme My Town  ou I hate you. Un show qui mettra tout le monde de bonne humeur. 

La bonne humeur continue avec The Hives à Grande Scène.

Vous avez compris, avec cette line up de dingue, aujourd’hui on a fait des allez retours entre les deux plus grandes scènes du festival sans répit.

Les cinq suédois habillés de leurs traditionnelles costumes noirs et blanc vont se donner à fond devant une pelouse archi- bondée. Rock endiablé, refrains joyeuses, cadences effrénées, un set liste véritable concentré d’énergie : les incontournables Hate to Say I Told You So, Walk Idiot Walk, Tick Tick Boom se mêleront à plusieurs nouveautés comme Bogus Operandi, Countdown to Shutdown ou Rigor Mortis Radio.

Tous les musiciens se déchainent, le guitariste Nicholaus Arson fera un tour dans la foule alors que le frontman Pelle Almqvist fait tourner son micro, saute, danse, monte sur la batterie et enchaîne les interactions avec le public souvent en français, un public qui visiblement ne réagit pas comme il le voulait (encore une fois les Maneskin fans ne connaissent pas forcément le groupe suédois). Cela n’empêche qu’il a une grosse ambiance sur la pelouse de début à la fin !

De retour à la Cascade pour Gossip. Quel bonheur de retrouver le groupe américain et la diva Beth Dido qui accompagnée par Nathan Howdeshell, son fidèle complice à la guitare et trois autres musiciens de tournée, une batteuse (qui n’est pas Hannah Billie), le bassiste Ted Kwo et Bijoux Cone à la guitare et aux claviers, nous offre tous leurs hits de rigueur de Listen Up! à  Heavy Cross en passant par  Love Long Distance, Men in Love et Standing in the Way of Control.

Le chant de Beth est toujours aussi impressionnant et ses blagues et ses nombreuses tentatives de parler français la rend toujours aussi attachante. Néanmoins, on a trouvé beaucoup trop de plaisanteries inutiles et bavardages ennuyeuses entre les chansons et un show moins énergique et palpitant que sans nos souvenirs.

En plus là où on était, à droite de la scène, la basse était prédominante et on entendait à peine la guitare. La diva terminera le show dans la foule, pieds nus et sans perruque, en chantant L’homme à la moto, de Piaf. Un show correct mais un peu décevant quand même.

Notons que ce concert a été chansignée par deux intervenants et diffusés sur les écrans. Une bonne initiative.

Et pour terminer cette excellente journée entièrement sous le signe du Rock, on va retrouver la grande attraction de la journée, Måneskin à la Grande Scène. C’est la première fois quand je vois le fameux groupe italien gagnant de l’Eurovision en 2021 et j’étais extrêmement curieuse.

Si on a bien remarqué le gros engouement pour le groupe pendant toute la journée, la pelouse déborde maintenant de fans qui portent des T Shirts à l’effigie du groupe (souvent des adolescents accompagnés par leur parents). Il est impossible d’accéder des deux côtés de la scène.

Tout au long du concert, l’ambiance à la Grande Scène sera absolument incroyable. Les fans chantent en cœur les refrains, les bras levés et les cris accompagnent chaque morceau. Même les musiciens sont impressionnés.

C’est le dernier concert de leur tournée mais pas de signe de fatigue. Le quatuor, en véritable Rock stars, avec le charismatique Damiano David au chant, la bassiste Victoria De Angelis, le guitariste Thomas Raggi et Ethan Torchio à la batterie se déchainent avec bonheur.  La bassiste et le guitariste jouent près des barrières, le dernier fera même plusieurs bains de foules se laissant porter par les fans en extase.

Zitti E Buoni (la chanson présentée à l’Eurovision), Honey (Are U Coming ?, Gasoline, In nome del padre, les morceaux en anglais et en italien (dommage qu’il n’y a pas plus car je trouve que ça sonne beaucoup mieux) s’enchaînent et sont repris en cœur par les fans.

Pour Kool Kids un nombre impressionnant de fans monte sur scène et sautent dans tous le sens en faisant de ovations hystériques et des courbettes. Un moment assez long et pénible qui casse un peu l’ambiance du concert. Le show se termine en beauté avec la très jolie balade The Lonliest et le frénétique, I wanna be your slave. Les fans sont comblés. Glam rock sexy et énergique, un show bien calibré, à la hauteur des attentes.

C’était donc notre journée préférée de cette édition du festival! La journée la plus Rock & Roll !

Vendredi, avec la programmation plus électronique et hip hop, on passe notre journée dans la deuxième moitié du parc, où se trouve la scène du Bosquet et la scène Firestone et on profite aussi pour découvrir beaucoup d’autres attractions : conférences, défis sportifs et expositions.

On démarre la journée avec Rallye. Une joyeuse bande de potes originaire de Hauts-de-Seine, fermement décidé à mettre l’ambiance en ce début d’après-midi. C’est dynamique, plein d’énergie et de bonne humeur. Pop – Rock aux influences psychédélique avec une peu de French Touch (ils chantent en français), des guitares et des synthés qui font bouger les curieux venus les voir. Le quartette interprétera de morceaux de leur 2 EP l’Age d’OR (2021) et Cheval2-3 (2023) et ils nous offriront même une nouvelle chanson pas encore sortie intitulé Monument.

Mention spéciale pour Le parfum de filles !!! qui fera danser tout le monde et récoltera de chaleureuses ovations.

En attendent leurs copains de Please sur la même scène, on fait un tour aux Arènes du Rock où il fallait former une équipe et défier d’autres festivaliers et festivalières dans une série de 5 épreuves sportives et musicales.

A côté, l’espace FAIR PLAY dédié à la rencontre et à l’initiation aux sports paralympiques, proposait de s’initier au basket fauteuils.

Pas loin l’artiste The Blind présentait son œuvre exclusivement créée pour le festival. A l’image de la feuille de papier blanche sur laquelle s’inscrit le braille, l’artiste avait développé une installation artistique interactive qui cachait un message en braille sur 4,5 mètres de hauteur. Nombreux festivaliers ont tenté le défi.

Please démarre en trombe avec l’excellent Flashlight qui nous plonge rapidement dans une ambiance vintage 70’s au parfum de Fleetwood Mac ou Daryl Hall & John Oates. Eux aussi sont une bande d’amis depuis les années collège et la complicité est évidente. Portés par une voix puissante, des synthés doux et des mélodies accrocheuses, le groupe enchaine des belles compositions intemporelles, des morceaux énergiques comme It’s only a Band ou plus slow, à l’image de la magnifique ballade Hard Loving. Deux Ep à leur actif, le groupe fait vibrer le public de plus en plus nombreux devant la scène du Bosquet. A suivre.

On enchaine avec New West, à la Scène Firestone. Lauréat du prix de la découverte de l’année 2024 aux derniers Juno Awards (l’équivalent canadien des Victoires de la musique) le groupe délivre un show très agréable et communicatif. Du pop rock qui fait danser avec des belles mélodies et des refrains accrocheurs. Le chanteur descendra plusieurs fois au milieu de la foule pour danser et faire des accolades et tout le monde va se prêter aux jeux. La reprise de Bitter Sweet Symphonie de The Verve va créer un grade vague d’enthousiasme.

Un petit passage à l’espace Let’s Talk qui propose la discussion « Les Corps peuvent-il être militants »   en compagnie de la championne d’escalade Nolwen Berthier et le para athlète Michael Jeremiasz.

Notre périple sur le site du festival continue avec la visite de l’exposition de photos “Scenes & stades – Reflets d’emotions”, (en collaboration avec L’Equipe) qui met en parallèle la musique live et la compétition sportive avec des très jolis clichés.

On va aussi faire aussi un tour à la boutique officielle où on trouve des T-Shirts et d’autres articles du festival, mais aussi le merchandising de groupes présents tout au long du weekend.

On fera aussi une pause littéraire à la Rock Biblio proposé par la Ville de Saint Cloud,  pour consulter de nombreux ouvrages : dictionnaire du rock, biographie des artistes, bandes dessines ou de vieux magazines de spécialité. Quelques jolis tableaux de Lalie Lartiste y sont exposés également.

La journée passe vite et même si aujourd’hui on ne court pas entre les concerts, il y a beaucoup de choses à faire.

Sans être fans de Soulwax, on fait un tour à la Cascade, si ce n’est que pour voir Igor Cavalera (Ex Sepultura) à la batterie et on tombe sur un show fantastique : Un son ultra puissant, une scénographie impressionnante. Trois batteries sont installées en hauteur sur des échafaudages et des nombreux synthétiseurs modulaires se trouvent au centre de la scène où les frères Stephen et David Dewaele sont aux commandes, accompagnées par Laima Cavalera (la femme d’Igor) au chant. Des lumières stroboscopiques pulsent en rythme de la musique. Sur les pelouses, nombreux et nombreuses sont ceux qui vibrent et se déhanchent sur l’électro rock des Belges.

En se dirigeant vers la sortie du parc, on retrouve d’autres aficionados de l’électro qui se laissent envoutés par AILI, le duo mixte belgo-japonais formé par d’Aili Maruyama et d’Orson Wouters, membre eux aussi de la délégation de la ville belge de Gand. Leur l’électro-pop aguicheur embelli par des textes en japonais et joué dans un nuage épais de fumé donne envie à beaucoup de festivaliers de s’attarder encore un peu dans cette belle soirée de fin d’été.

Samedi, on démarre avec groupe Sanaza qui se produit à la Scène Ile de France. Notons que cette scène à fait peau neuve, car elle s’est débarrassée de la tente qui l’a abrité pendant des nombreuses années, en devenant une vraie scène en air libre.

Les cinq membres du groupe de SANAZA, originaire de Seine-et-Marne, font partie des six formations de lycéens lauréates du tremplin Première Seine, organisé dans toute l’Île-de-France. Devant beaucoup des membres de leurs familles, des amis et d’autres festivaliers, ces jeunes lycéens très heureux d’être là jouerons un set bien sympathique formé par quelques compositions originales d’influence rock – soul- funk et aussi une reprise de Stop de Sam Brown. Mention spéciale pour la chanteuse charismatique à la voix claire et puissante, et le claviériste plein d’énergie et son synthé hypnotisant.  

 

Fans inconditionnels de THE KILLS on se dirige vers la Grande Scène pour leur concert. C’est la première fois que je vois Alison Mosshart et Jamie Hince sur cette tournée et le duo explosif ne me déçoit jamais. Leur superbes hits classiques Kissy Kissy,  U.R.A , Baby Says, Last Day of Magic,  Black Balloon, Doing It to Death and Future Starts Slow interprétés avec l’énergie brute, la ferveur et la complicité habituelle ont été agrémentés avec de nombreux extrais de leur nouvel album God Games, parmi eux 103, Love And Tenerness ou New York qui sonnent plutôt bien en live.

Dans un décor minimaliste, Jamie envoi de riff tueurs et Alison bouge comme une lionne en cage, se jette par terre ou secoue drastiquement sa blonde crinière.

Les fans sont au rendez-vous malgré la pluie qui tombe de plus en plus fort sur le site. Les musiciens souriants et communicatifs leur remercieront plusieurs fois d’être aussi courageux et rester en place malgré le mauvais temps.

Malheureusement, je n’ai pas été accrédité photo cette année, mais j’ai pris quelques photos dans la foule avec mon cher compact de poche qui ont plu à Alison. Elle les a donc publiés sur Instagram. Quelle fierté ! Merci !

La pluie s’est presque arrêté quand Offspring entre en scène. Avalanche de hits, des blagues, des pogos et de cicles pits, sans oublier les jets confettis, les canons à fumée et les ballons, le groupe californien nous offrent un show frénétique.

Come Out and Play, All I Want, Why Don’t You Get a Job?, Pretty Fly (for a White Guy), The Kids Aren’t Alright ainsi que le nouveau single Make It All Right (extrait du Nouvel album SUPERCHARGED qui sortira en Octobre) ainsi que la reprise de Ramones Blitzkrieg Bop et quelques riffs d’Iron Maides  et de Guns N’ Roses mettent tout le monde d’accord !

Dexter Holland (chant, guitare rythmique), Noodles (guitare solo, chœurs, Todd Morse – (basse, chœurs), Brandon Pertzborn (batteur) et Jonah Nimoy (guitare, chœurs, percussions, claviers) sont déchainés. Punk rock énergique et festif pour évidement d’après eux, « le meilleur public du monde »!

Le show de Massive Attack, sera massif. Sans être grands connaisseurs du groupe, on ne peut qu’être fascinés par leur show puissant et engagé. D’abord, il y a la musique, ce mélange chaotique de rock, électro, cold wave et leurs hits interprétés avec la présence de nombreux invitées (parmi eux ce soir Young Fathers, Horace Andy, Elizabeth Fraser) et ensuite, il y a le spectacle visuel avec un déluge de projections d’images, des vidéos, des dessins, des messages et des déclarations politiques concentrés ce soir notamment sur leur soutien à la cause palestinienne.

On quitte le site avent la fin du concert en passant par le Scène du Bosquet ou les DJ POLO& PAN et MYD se produisent sur scène pour un B2B inédit devant une petite foule enthousiaste pas encore fatiguée et désireuse de continuer la fête.

Nous voilà donc dimanche, le dernier jour de ce festival fantastique et il y a encore beaucoup de choses au programme.

Pour commencer :  MONOBLOC à la Scène Firestone. On ne verra que les 3 derniers morceaux du show, mais c’est suffisant pour nous faire une très bonne idée sur ce groupe new yorkais inspiré par le post-punk revival des années 2000.

C’est élégant, énergique avec des riffs pointus et accrocheurs. On pense surtout aux Strokes (notamment par le timbre de voix du chanteur Timothy Waldron) mais aussi à Joy Division ou The Cure. A suivre de très près !

Les trois toulousaines de Madam se produisent sur la Scène du Bosquet sous un soleil de plomb. Ça sera notre coup de cœur de la journée !

C’est Thanks for the Noise, leur premier album, que le trio féminin vient défendre aujourd’hui devant un public complétement sous le charme. Rock- punk énergique interprété avec du peps et des tripes, Anaïs Belmonte (batterie), Gabbie Burns (guitare) et Marine Masachs (basse) déploient un incroyable dynamisme et enthousiasme communicatif. Dans la foule, de plus en plus nombreuse, beaucoup pogote avec ferveur ! Bravo, mesdames ! A revoir très bientôt !

On passe par l’espace Let’s talk pour assister à une conférence très intéressante intitulé « Femmes, Corp, Liberté : Comment s’émanciper par le geste ? avec la participation de l’écrivaine Lola Lafont, la danseuse sur glace médaillée olympique, Gabriela Papadakis et la judoka médaillée olympique, Amandine Buchard.

A la Grand Cascade c’est le tour de Zaho de Sagazan, la française aux 4 victoires de la musique dont tout le monde en parle. On a hâte de découvrir la chanteuse pour la première fois en live mais on est vite découragé par l’immense foule amassée devant la scène et sur les côtés. Le son n’est pas très bon non plus.

C’est évidemment son album Symphonie des Éclairs qui sera dans set list avec un début plutôt calme avec la chanteuse installée au piano pour Dis- moi que tu m’aime où Je rêve alors qu’Aspiration et Tristesse, feront plus bouger la foule. C’est bien, mais on n’arrive pas entrer dans le show car on est bloqués dans le foule compacte. On s’éloigne au fond la pelouse mais là, c’est difficile à suivre.

On fera un petit tout à la scène Ile de France pour découvrir le show des Never Ending Stairs, les Lauréats Première Seine 2024 – Secteur 75.  Le trio de l’Est Parisien créé à la joue un rock sage avec des influences Jazz et Funk.

On revianda vers le show de Zaho de Sagazan pile pour le dernier morceau, Modern Love, la reprise de David Bowie, pour laquelle la chanteuse fait monter son équipe sur scène et de fera danser tout le monde sur scène et sur la pelouse.

Changement de style avec Dynamite Shakers qui mettent le feu à la Firestone ! Ce quatuor français joue corps et âme du rock garage brut et énergique avec de riffs sauvages et une batterie ultra puissante. On est vite accaparé par ce show réjouissant qu’on décide de faire impasse sur le grand retour de Ghinzu.

On verra quand même les 4 derniers morceaux dont 3 extrais de leur album mythique “Blow” qui fête ses 20 années d’existence (Do You Read Me?, ‘Til You Faint et Mine). Les musiciens n’ont rien perdu de leur énergique et la foule est en délire.

A la grande scène, place à la déesse PJ Harvey qui semble nous inviter dans son salon car sur scène il y a plusieurs éléments de mobilier :  des chaises en bois, une table sur lesquelles il ya une carafe d’eau, plusieurs verres et tasses.

Le show démarre en douceur dans une atmosphère calme, avec plusieurs extrais de sons dernière album I Inside The Old Year Dying. La voix est superbe et la chanteuse est resplendissante dans sa tenue blanche composé d’une robe longue et cape à dessins et de bottines blanches également. Ses mouvements sont élégants et gracieux.

A la guitare ou à l’autoharpe, la musicienne est accompagnée par ses fidèles acolytes : John Parish, le batteur Jean-Marc Butty, le multi-instrumentaliste Giovanni Ferrario et James Johnston qui resteront plutôt en retrait pendant tout le concert.

Vers le milieu elle s’attaquerait avec plus énergie au hits plus classiques comme Send his Love to Me, 50 Ft Queenie ou Man size laissant les époustouflants Down by the Water et le superbe To Bring You My Love pour la fin. Du grand art. Un show envoutant et majestueux qui subjugue les fans venus très nombreux. Pourtant j’aurais aimé un peu plus d’énergie rock comme à l’époque Stories from the city, stories from the sea, mon album préféré.

De Pixies on verra que la moitié du show car trop de monde (décidément la Scène de la Cascade a attiré beaucoup de monde cette année) et beaucoup jouent de mains et des pieds pour s’approcher de la scène sans se soucier des autres spectateurs.

J’ai constaté que « Pardon » ou « Excusez-moi » a quasiment disparu du vocabulaire des français. Beaucoup passent en force, frappent avec les sacs à dos, mais pour les excuses on repassera plus tard. 

Bref, revenons au concert :  Frank Black et compagnie semble en forme même si sur scène c’est assez statique. Wave of Mutilation, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Caribou ou Debaser, on les écoutera avec plaisir avant d’aller à la Grande Scène à 21 h30 pour accueillir comme il se doit le relais de la flamme paralympique !

La DJ Barbara Butch et la réalisatrice Marjane Satrapi monte sur scène pour transmettre la flamme au Para judoka Hélios Latchoumanaya. Un grand moment d’émotion accueilli avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme par la foule.

On quittera cette édition du festival sur quelques accords de LCD Soundsystem qui rassemble un grand nombre de fans pas encore fatigués, donc prêts à se déchainer sur l’électro rock du groupe new-yorkais mené par James Murphy, alors que d’autres fêtards ont choisi d’épuiser les dernières ressources à la Scène du Bosquet, devant le set du DJ-producteur français Canblaster.

Voilà, la Big Rock Party est fini. Des artistes consacrés, des jeunes artistes talentueux, des belles découvertes musicales et des nombreuses autres activités, encore une excellente édition de Rock en Seine qui nous a ravi.

Every year, Rock en Seine rhymes with the return from vacations. This year the festival took place between August 21 and 25 as usual in the magnificent Domaine de Saint Cloud located at the gates of Paris: A historic edition with a gargantuan and eclectic line up (92 concerts in 5 days) and a record attendance with no less than 182000 spectators! 

And as we were all passionate about the Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer, in addition to the musical program, the Ile-de-France festival took part in the Paralympic Games (the festival had obtained the Cultural Olympiad label) with several dedicated events, including the passage of the flame on the Main Stage on August 25, 2024.

Except for some rain on Saturday, the weather was very mild, sunny and ideal temperatures that allowed all festivalgoers to dance in front of the concerts, frolic in the alleys of the park, participate in sports challenges or sip drinks on a deckchair. 

We are not going to tell you about the come back to Rock en Seine 10 years later, of the diva Lana Del Rey and because we were not able to attend the first day which had a 100% female line up, but we will relate in detail about our adventures on the other 4 festival days. Here there is our report!

We start our festival on Thursday, August 22nd with the sensation of the year coming from across the Channel, The Last Dinner Party. The five girls and the boy (on drums) will quickly conquer the already very large audience at the beginning of this beautiful afternoon in front of the Main Stage, not only with their light and bewitching pop, punk, baroque sounds, but also thanks to their elegant stage presence.

It is in particular Abigail Morris, the singer who looks like Freida Khalo who attracts all our attention. Dressed in a beautiful bohemian dress with ruffles, she dances and moves gracefully all over the stage, while bewitching us with her sublime voice.  

The band’s first album, Prelude to Ecstasy, warmly acclaimed by the critics, will obviously be present in the set list. They will also give us two special gifts for Rock en Seine: a new track, Second Best, and an energetic cover of Blondie’s Call Me. Their hit Nothing Matters will end the set with thousands of arms in the air that move nicely to the rhythm of the song. In the aftermath, they took the opportunity to celebrate the birthday of the keyboardist’s little sister on stage. Magnificent discovery. To see again!

We continue at the Grande Cascade Stage with the Americans of Dead Poet Society. The singer, Jack Underkofler and his band offer us a super energetic set, a nice mix of explosive rock, new wave and electro, with catchy and effective songs, extracted from their 2 excellent albums “!” (Pronounce ‘The exclamation album’) and Fission.  HURT,.swvrm., Running in cicles will inflame the audience who have come in large number. A few circle pits will form quickly, and slams will follow one another throughout the concert. What a pleasure to finally see them. Awesome show!

Back to the Main Stage to see Kasabian. We had lost sight of the British band a bit lately and the departure of Tom Meighan had not helped things. This is the first time we have seen them with only Sergio Pizzorno at the helm.

The stage background is similar to the artwork of Happenings, the new album released in July.  The frontman dressed in an orange jacket (which will give way to an amazing, oversized T Shirt) guitar or not under his arms paces the stage non-stop, while the other musicians stay rather wisely behind. Sergio Pizzorno constantly addresses the crowd to encourage them to applaud, sing or be carried on their shoulders. Power, great energy and good communication with the public.

The titles follow one another, and it is rather the old hits that will delight fans. The lawn in front of the Main Stage is crowded. Of course, the audience in the front rows are not all Kasabian fans (but rather those of Maneskin who came early to get a good seat) and do not know the lyrics by heart, but the majority react with enthusiasm and enjoy every minute. Club Foot, Underdog, L.S.F. (Lost Souls Forever), not to mention Shoot The Runner and Vlad the Impaler will transform the lawn into a dance floor.

We head to the Cascade stage to see Franck Carter and the Rattlesnakes who will offer us as usual a punchy show, full of energy with circle pits and slammers in large quantities. His reputation as a stage beast remains unchanged and the same can be said of his bandmates. Franck descends into the crowd at the beginning of the concert and will be carried by joyful fans. He films himself with phones picked up in the crowd several times and will go on a series of chats, always concerned that everyone feels good and enjoys the concert in the best conditions.  As for the set list, the latest album Dark Rainbow will be honored without forgetting classics such as My Town or I hate you. A show that will put everyone in a good mood.

The good mood continues with The Hives on the Main Stage. You got it, with this crazy line-up, today we went back and forth between the two biggest stages of the festival without respite.

The five Swedes dressed in their traditional black and white suits will give it their all in front of a crowded lawn. Frenzied rock, joyful choruses, frantic cadences, a set list that is a real concentrate of energy: the unmissable Hate to Say I Told You So, Walk Idiot Walk, Tick Tick Boom will be mixed with several new songs such as Bogus Operandi, Countdown to Shutdown or Rigor Mortis Radio.

All the musicians go wild, guitarist Nicholaus Arson will go around the crowd while frontman Pelle Almqvist spins his microphone, jumps, dances, gets on the drums and interacts with the audience often in French, an audience that obviously doesn’t react as it wanted (once again the Maneskin fans don’t necessarily know the Swedish band). That doesn’t prevent from having a great atmosphere on the pitch from start to finish!

Back to the Cascade for Gossip. What a pleasure to find the American band and the diva Beth Dido who, accompanied by Nathan Howdeshell, his faithful accomplice on guitar and three other touring musicians, a drummer (who is not Hannah Billie), bassist Ted Kwo and Bijoux Cone on guitar and keyboards, offer us all their hits from Listen Up! to Heavy Cross via Love Long Distance, Men in Love and Standing in the Way of Control.  Beth’s singing is still as impressive as ever and her jokes and her many attempts to speak French still make her so endearing. Nevertheless, we found far too many useless banter and boring chatter between the songs and a show less energetic and thrilling than without our memories

In addition, where we were, on the right side of the stage, the bass was predominant, and we could barely hear the guitar. The diva will end the show in the crowd, without a wig, by singing L’homme à la moto, by Piaf. A decent show but a little disappointing, nonetheless.

And to finish this excellent day entirely under the sign of Rock, we will find the great attraction of the day, Måneskin at the Main Stage. It’s the first time when I see the famous Italian band winner of Eurovision in 2021 and I was extremely curious.

If we noticed the big craze for the band throughout the day, the lawn is now overflowing with fans wearing T-Shirts with the band’s image (often teenagers accompanied by their parents). It is impossible to access both sides of the stage.  Throughout the concert, the atmosphere at the Main Stage will be absolutely incredible. Fans sing along to the choruses; arms raised and screams accompany each song. Even the musicians are impressed.

It’s the last concert of their tour but no sign of fatigue. The quartet as true rock stars, with the charismatic Damiano David on vocals, bassist Victoria De Angelis, guitarist Thomas Raggi and Ethan Torchio on drums are happily unleashed.  The bass player and the guitarist play near the barriers, the latter even does several crowd baths letting himself be carried away by the fans in ecstasy. 

Zitti E Buoni (the song presented at Eurovision), Honey (Are U Coming?, Gasoline, In nome del padre, the songs in English and Italian (too bad there aren’t more because I think it sounds much better) follow one another and are taken up by the fans. 

For Kool Kids, an impressive number of fans went on stage and jumped in all directions, giving hysterical ovations and bowing. A rather long and painful moment that breaks the atmosphere of the concert a little bit. The show ends on a high note with the very nice ballad The Lonliest and the frenetic, I want to be your slave.

The fans are delighted. Sexy and energetic glam rock, a well-calibrated show, up to expectations.

It was our favorite day of this edition of the festival, the most rock & roll day.

On Friday, with the more electronic and hip-hop programming, we spend our day in the second half of the park where the Bosquet stage and the Firestone stage are located and we will also discover many other attractions: conferences, sports challenges or exhibitions.

We start the day with Rallye. A happy group of friends from Hauts-de-Seine, firmly decided to set the mood in the early afternoon. It’s dynamic, full of energy and good humor. Pop – Rock with psychedelic influences with a bit of French Touch, guitars and synths that make the curious who come to see them move. The quartet will perform songs from their 2 EP l’Age d’OR (2021) and Cheval2-3 (2023) and they will even offer us a new song not yet released entitled Monument.  Special mention for Le parfum de filles!! which will make everyone dance and will receive warm ovations.

While waiting for their friends from Please on the same stage, we went to the Arènes du Rock where we could have form a team and challenge other festival-goers in a series of 5 sports and musical events. Next door, the FAIR PLAY area dedicated to meeting and introducing people to Paralympic sports, offered an introduction to wheelchair basketball.

Not far away, the artist The Blind presented his work created exclusively for the festival. Like the white sheet of paper on which the Braille is written, the artist had developed an interactive art installation that hid a message in Braille 4.5 meters high. Many people took the challenge.

Please starts with the excellent Flashlight which quickly plunges us into a vintage 70’s atmosphere with the flavor of Fleetwood Mac or Daryl Hall & John Oates. They also know each other since their college years and the complicity is obvious. Carried by a powerful voice, soft synths and catchy melodies, the band plays beautiful timeless compositions, energetic tracks like It’s only a Band or slower, like the magnificent ballad Hard Loving. With two EPs in their discography  the group thrills the growing audience in front of the Bosquet stage.

We continue with New West, at the Firestone Stage. Winner of the 2024 Discovery of the Year award at the last Juno Awards (the Canadian equivalent of the Victoires de la musique), the group delivers a very pleasant and communicative show.

Pop rock that makes us dance with beautiful melodies and catchy choruses. The singer will go down several times in the middle of the crowd to dance and hug and everyone will play the game. The cover of The Verve’s Bitter Sweet Symphonie will create a wave of enthusiasm.

A short visit to the Let’s Talk area which offers the discussion “Can bodies be militants” with climbing champion Nolwen Berthier and the para-athlete Michael Jeremiasz.

Our journey to the festival site continues with a visit to the photo exhibition “Scenes & stadiums – Reflections of emotions”, (in collaboration with L’Equipe) which parallels live music and sports competition with some very nice shots. We also go to the official store where you can find T-Shirts and other items from the festival, but also the merchandising of bands present throughout the weekend.

We will also take a literary break at the Rock Biblio offered by the City of Saint Cloud, to consult many works: rock dictionary, artists’ biographies, comic books or old specialty magazines. Some pretty paintings by Lalie Lartiste are also on display.

The day goes by quickly and even if today we don’t run between concerts, there are a lot of things to do…

Without being fans of Soulwax, we go to the Cascade stage, only to see Igor Cavalera (Ex Sepultura) on drums and we come across a fantastic show: An ultra powerful sound, an impressive scenography. Three drums are installed high up on scaffolding and numerous modular synthesizers are in the centre of the stage where brothers Stephen and David Dewaele are at the controls, accompanied by Laima Cavalera (Igor’s wife) on vocals. Strobe lights pulsate to the rhythm of the music. Many people vibrate and sway to the crazy electro rock party.

Heading towards the exit of the park, we find other electro aficionados who let themselves be enchanted by AILI, the Belgian-Japanese mixed duo formed by Aili Maruyama and Orson Wouters, also a member of the delegation from the Belgian city of Ghent. Their seductive electro-pop embellished by lyrics in Japanese and played in a thick cloud of smoke makes many festival-goers want to linger a little longer in this beautiful late summer evening.

On Saturday, we start with the band Sanaza who performs at the Scène Ile de France. Note that this stage has been given a makeover, because it got rid of the tent that housed it for many years, becoming a real open-air stage.

The five members of the SANAZA group, originally from Seine-et-Marne, are among the six high school student groups that have won the Première Seine springboard, organized throughout the Île-de-France region. In front of many of their family members, friends and other festival-goers, these young high school students very happy to be there will play a very nice set formed by some original compositions of rock-soul-funk influence and also a cover of Sam Brown’s Stop. Special mention for the charismatic singer with a clear and powerful voice, and for the keyboardist full of energy and his hypnotizing synth.

Unconditional fans of THE KILLS we head to the Main Stage for their concert. It’s the first time I’ve seen Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince on this tour and the explosive duo never disappoints me. Their superb classic hits Kissy Kissy, U.R.A, Baby Says, Last Day of Magic, Black Balloon, Doing It to Death and Future Starts Slow performed with the usual raw energy, fervour and complicity were embellished with many excerpts from their new album God Games, among them 103, Love And Tenerness or New York which sound pretty good live.

In a minimalist setting, Jamie sends killer riffs, and Alison moves like a lioness in a cage, throws herself on the ground or drastically shakes her blonde mane. The fans are there despite the rain that is falling harder and harder on the site. The smiling and communicative musicians will thank them several times for being so brave and staying in place despite the bad weather.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get photo accreditation this year, but I took a few photos in the crowd with my beloved pocket compact that Alison liked. So, she posted them on Instagram. So proud! Thank you! 

The rain has almost stopped when Offspring takes the stage. Avalanche of hits, jokes, pogos and cicles pits, not to mention confetti throws, smoke cannons and balloons, the Californian band offers us a frenetic show.

Come Out and Play, All I Want, Why Don’t You Get a Job?, Pretty Fly (for a White Guy), The Kids Aren’t Alright as well as the new single Make It All Right (from the New album SUPERCHARGED coming up in October) as well as the Ramones cover Blitzkrieg Bop and some Iron Maiden and Guns N’ Roses riffs make everyone agree! 

Dexter Holland (vocals, rhythm guitar), Noodles (lead guitar, backing vocals, Todd Morse – (bass, backing vocals), Brandon Pertzborn (drums) and Jonah Nimoy (guitar, backing vocals, percussion, keyboards) are unleashed. Energetic and festive punk rock for obviously, according to them, “the best audience in the world”!

The Massive Attack show will be massive. Without being great connoisseurs of the band, we can only be fascinated by their powerful and committed show. First, there is the music, a chaotic mix of rock, electro, cold wave and their hits performed with the presence of many guests (among them tonight Young Fathers, Horace Andy, Elizabeth Fraser) and then there is the visual spectacle with a deluge of image projections, videos, drawings, messages and political statements focused tonight on their support for the Palestinian cause.

We leave the festival site before the end of the concert via the Scène du Bosquet where the DJ POLO & PAN and MYD perform for the first time a B2B in front of a small enthusiastic crowd not yet tired and eager to continue the party.

So here we are on Sunday, the last day of this huge festival and there is still a lot on the program.

To start: MONOBLOC at the Firestone Stage. We will only see the last 3 tracks of the show, but it’s enough to give us a very good idea of this New York band inspired by the post-punk revival of the 2000s. It’s elegant, energetic with sharp and catchy riffs. We think of The Strokes (especially by the timbre of the voice of the singer Timothy Waldron) but also of Joy Division or The Cure. To be followed very closely! 

The three Toulouse ladies of Madam perform on the Stage of the Bosquet under a blazing sun. It will be our favourite concert of the day!

It’s Thanks for the Noise, their first album, that the female trio comes to defend today in front of a completely charmed audience. Energetic rock-punk interpreted with pep and guts, Anaïs Belmonte (drums), Gabbie Burns (guitar) and Marine Masachs (bass) deploy an incredible dynamism and contagious enthusiasm. In the crowd, which is growing in number, many are fervently pogoting! Bravo, ladies! See you again very soon!

We go through the Let’s talk area to attend a very interesting conference entitled “Women, Corp, Freedom: How to emancipate oneself through gesture? with the participation of writer Lola Lafont, Olympic medal-winning ice dancer Gabriela Papadakis and Olympic medal-winning judoka Amandine Buchard.

 At the Grand Cascade stage, it’s the turn of Zaho de Sagazan, the French artist winner of 4 Victoires de la Musique that everyone is talking about. We can’t wait to discover the singer for the first time live but we are quickly discouraged by the huge crowd gathered in front of the stage and on the sides. The sound is not very good either.

It is obviously her album Symphonie des Éclairs that will be on the set list with a rather calm beginning with the singer installed at the piano for Dis- moi que tu m’aime et Je rêve while Aspiration and Tristesse, will make the crowd move.

It’s good, but we can’t get into the show because we’re stuck in the compact crowd. We move away from the back of the pitch but there, it’s difficult to follow. 

Short move to Ile de France stage to discover the show of the Never Ending Stairs, the Première Seine 2024 Laureates – Sector 75.  The trio from the East of Paris perform some rock with Jazz and Funk influences. 

We came back to Zaho de Sagazan’s show just for the last track, Modern Love, the David Bowie cover, for which the singer brings her team on stage and makes everyone dance on stage and on the lawn.

Change of style with Dynamite Shakers who set fire to the Firestone! This French quartet plays raw and energetic garage rock body and soul with wild riffs and ultra-powerful drums. We are quickly monopolized by this joyful show that we decide to skip the great return of Ghinzu. We will still see the last 4 tracks including 3 excerpts from their mythical album “Blow” which celebrates its 20 years of existence (Do You Read Me?, ‘Til You Faint and Mine). The musicians have lost none of their energy and the crowd is delirious. 

On the main stage, it’s time for the goddess PJ Harvey who seems to invite us into her living room because on stage there are several pieces of furniture: wooden chairs, a table on which there is a carafe of water, several glasses and cups.

The show starts gently in a calm atmosphere, with several songs from the latest album I Inside The Old Year Dying. The voice is superb, and the singer is resplendent in her white outfit composed of a long dress and cape with drawings and white boots as well. Her movements are elegant and graceful. 

On guitar or autoharp, the musician is accompanied by her faithful acolytes: John Parish, drummer Jean-Marc Butty, multi-instrumentalist Giovanni Ferrario and James Johnston who will remain rather in the background throughout the concert.

Towards the middle she would tackle with more energy the more classic hits like Send his Love to Me, 50 Ft Queenie or Man size leaving the breathtaking Down by the Water and the superb To Bring You My Love for the end. Great art. A bewitching and majestic show that captivates the fans who came in large numbers. However, I would have liked a little more rock energy like at the time Stories from the city, stories from the sea, my favourite album.

Of Pixies we will see that half of the show because too many people (definitely the Cascade Stage attracted a lot of people this year) and many play with hands and feet to approach the stage without worrying about the other spectators.

I noticed that “Pardon” or “Excusez-moi” has almost disappeared from the vocabulary of a big part of people. Many force their way through, hitting with backpacks, but for the apologies we’ll come back later.  

Anyway, let’s get back to the concert: Frank Black and company seem to be in good shape even if on stage it’s quite static. Wave of Mutilation, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Caribou or Debaser, we will listen to them with pleasure before going to the Main Stage at 9:30 p.m. to welcome the Paralympic torch relay as it should be! 

DJ Barbara Butch and director Marjane Satrapi take the stage to pass the flame to Para judoka Hélios Latchoumanaya. A great moment of emotion welcomed with great enthusiasm by the crowd.

We will leave this edition of the festival with LCD Soundsystem which brings together a large number of fans not yet tired, therefore ready to go wild on the electro rock of the New York band led by James Murphy, while other partygoers have chosen to exhaust the last resources at the Scène du Bosquet, in front of the set of the French DJ-producer Canblaster.

Here we are, the Big Rock Party is over. Well-known artists, talented young ones, beautiful musical discoveries and many other activities, another excellent edition of Rock En Seine that bring us much joy. Thank you and see you next year!
