Chose promise chose faite. Aujourd’hui on continue le récit du festival HEAVY WEEK-END qui s’est déroulé à Nancy du 21 au 23 Juin avec la deuxième journée, le 22 juin 2024. Après une première journée triomphale, c’est le tour de SORTILEGE, PRETTY MAIDS, MEGADETH et DEEP PURPLE de mettre le feux au Zenith de Nancy!

SORTILEGE – Show énergique et accrocheur

En ce samedi ni trop chaud ni trop froid, parfait pour les concerts, SORTILEGE, le seul groupe français de la programmation du festival, démarre les hostilités à 17h30.

Crée en début des années 80, après un EP éponyme, 2 albums cultes (Métamorphose et Larmes de Héros) et quatre années de tournées, le groupe de heavy et power metal met un terme à sa carrière pour revenir en force 30 ans. Avec un nouvel line- up, ils sortiront en 2021, Phoenix et ensuite en 2022, Apocalypso.

Si c’est un peu calme en ce début d’après-midi au Zenih de Nancy, Christian « Zouille » Augustin (Chant), Olivier « Commandant » Spitzer (Guitare rythmique / Chœurs), Bruno « Turbo » Ramos (guitare), Sébastien « Shag » Bonnet – (Basse / Chœurs), Clément « Cadet » Rouxel (Batterie) sont prêts à en découdre dès le début de leur set.

En démarrant avec Amazone, un excellent morceaux emblématique de leur carrière, le groupe nous offrira un set list sous forme d’un voyage dans leur discographie ancienne (Chasse le Dragon, Délire d’un fou) et récente (Posseidon, Vampire),  une belle occasion pour les fans d’écouter leur morceaux préférés et pour  les autres, qui ne connaissent pas le groupe, de se familiarisé avec leur sonorités.

Des riffs rapides, une rythmique efficace, du heavy metal accrocheur, on assite à un jeu de scène bien dynamique avec tous les musiciens qui sautent et se déplacent sur toute la scène en entrainant le public avec eux.

La fosse est loin d’être pleine mais il ya une très belle ambiance, le public massé devant la scène semble connaitre les chansons par cœur et réagissent à quart de tour à chaque morceau. Les flammes situées au tour de la fosse et des gradins font déjà leur apparition et renforcent la puissance du show !

Le show passe super vite, et va se clôturer avec un autre morceau très acclamé par les fans, Sortilège. On se prépare déjà à accueillir le prochain groupe !

PRETTY MAIDS – excellent hard rock mélodique et grande élégance

PRETTY MAIDS est un groupe danois de hard rock mélodique formé aussi début 80s et qui se fait assez rare en France. C’est leur premier concert en six ans dans l’hexagone comme nous rappellera le très charismatique frontman.

Formé par deux membres d’origine Ronnie Atkins (chant) et Ken Hammer (guitare) – rejoints par Rene Shades (basse), Allan Sørensen (batterie) et Chris Laney (claviers et guitare), le groupe nous offrira un bel aperçu de leur vaste discographie (15 albums studio, le dernier en date, Undress Your Madness est sorti en 2019). Des morceaux rapides alternent avec des puissantes ballades.

Des solos énergiques, des superbes mélodies, un rythme très dynamique, le quartette est d’humeur enjoué et très complice en cette début de soirée !

L’excellent classique des années 80 du « Back to Back » va réveiller tout le monde avec ses riffs endiablés et la voix très percutante d’Atkins ! Au programme donc des classiques du groupe, un morceau extrait du dernier album, Sepentine mais aussi, une belle reprise de John Skyes, Please Don’t Leave me.

Le frontman bouge avec aisance sur toute la scène et ne manque pas de communiquer avec le public. Il fait des signes, des sourires, des clins d’œil et brandit son micro et l’encourage constamment à faire du bruit et taper dans les mains. Il sait très bien comment divertir le public qui apprécie ce show très vitaminé. Des médiateurs sont jetés dans la foule et chacun s’empresse de rattraper le sien. L’ambiance est de plus en plus chaude.

Le son et excellent et les lumières commencent peu à peu à faire leurs apparitions.

Deux classiques du groupe Love Game et Future World terminerons ce show solide et élégant qu’il ne fallait surtout pas manquer. Contente d’avoir enfin l’occasion de les découvrir en live.

Premier point mode du festival : on remarque rapidement l’élégance et classe du groupe scandinave :  des chemises fluides, des vestes, des chapeaux et des jolis accessoires. Pour l’instant le prix de l’élégance est attribué à Pretty Maids !

MEGADETH – Une dose prodigieuse de Thrash Metal !

De plus en plus de T Shirts MEGADETH autour de nous, le signe que c’est bientôt le tour de Dave Mustaine & compagnie de monter sur scène. Je n’ai pas eu l’l’occasion de les voir sur cette tournée, c’est donc avec beaucoup d’impatience que j’attendais ce concert.

Le démarrage avec The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead! extrait du sublime dernier album éponyme suffit au nombreux fans présents d’éclater de joie.

Le monstre sacré à la longue chevelure rousse (Dave évidemment !) tout habillé en noir (petit détail, la chemise est déboutonnée au niveau de ventre mais cela ne semble pas le gêner) est en forme olympique et se déplace constamment sur la scène toute en observant avec attention la foule en délire.

Il semble surtout de très bonne humeur, car en plus de son festival des grimaces habituel, on a le droit à de nombreuse sourires et des geste amicaux.

Les grands classiques du groupe s’enchainnent sans temps mort : Hangar 18, Sweating Bullets, Tornado of Souls, Symphony of Destruction, Peace Sells. L’atmosphère s’embrase rapidement sous la fabuleuse salve de thrash métal servi avec précision.

Les fans sont de plus en plus chauds, la fosse plus fournie maintenant (comme le premier jour les barrières entre les gradins et la fosse on été enlevées) chante et saute avec ardeur alors que les slammers se font de plus en plus présents.

À tout le monde sera repris avec beaucoup d’émotion par tout le public et le frontman semble très content.

Il ne manquerait pas de nous présenter ses fidèles acolytes : James LoMenzo, de retour au sein du groupe depuis le 2021, qui martèle sa basse à coups de headbanging, Dick Verbeuren déchainé derrière se futs frappe avec puissance et nous fait de larges sourires et surtout le nouveau guitariste arrivé en 2023, Teemu Mäntysaari, qui semble déjà bien intégré dans le groupe et se livre à des solos accrocheurs.

Il y aura aussi une courte apparition de Vic Rattlehead, la mascotte du groupe, acclamé comme il se doit.

Le final sera spectaculaire avec Mechanix et évidement l’immanquable Holy Wars… The Punishment Due qui nous mets KO. D’ailleurs, le front man enfilera son peignoir de box siglé Megadeth pour quitter la scène.

Le groupe américain en feu, nous inflige de nouveau une grosse claque ce soir. Une dose prodigieuse de Thrash Metal ! Un des meilleurs shows du groupe que j’ai jamais vu.

Un prend une pause, afin de faire tour dans le village avant les vétérans de Deep Purple. La foule est plus dense et les stands de boissons et de nourriture sont pris d’assaut.

DEEP PURPLE – leçon magistrale de rock classique et psychédélique

Changement de registre avec les vétérans de DEEP PURPLE. La nuit commence à tomber doucement quand l’écran géant en fond de scène diffuse une animation qui dessine le logo du groupe. Le moment est en fin venu pour mettre la couleur pourpre à l’honneur.

Je n’ai pas eu l’occasion de les voir depuis bien longtemps et donc, encore beaucoup d’émotion et des frissons de mon côté, autant plus que cette fois, j’aurais l’occasion de les photographier depuis le pit photo.

Le show démarre avec la fabuleuse Highway Star extrait de Machine Head, album mythique sorti en 1972, album qui sera d’ailleurs bien représenté ce soir avec d’autres extrais magiques comme Lazy, Space Tracking ou le légendaire Smoke on the Water.

Dans le set list conçu sous forme de « best of » figureront aussi, Hard Lovin’ Man, Into the Fire ou Anya. Uncommon Man (album Now What?! de 2013) sera dédié à Jon Lord, disparu en juillet 2012.

Les morceaux légendaires seront entrecoupés par des nombreux solo de guitare exécutés parfaitement par l’excellent Simon McBride, le plus récent membre du groupe, mais aussi par des solos de clavier, livrées avec finesse et dextérité par Don Airey.

La section rythmique présente un Ian Paice impeccable, le seul musicien présent dans le groupe depuis ses débuts, qui frappe avec beaucoup de sérieux dans ses futs et un Roger Glover très en forme à la basse.

Quant à Ian Gillan, la voix est toujours aussi belle, chaude et mélodique. Même s’il n’est pas très dynamique, il se déplace sur toute la scène et encourage le public. Le chanteur profite de passages instrumentaux (un peu trop longues parfois) pour se reposer en pénombre, entre la batterie et les claviers.

Et quand le riff de guitare le plus connu de l’histoire du rock va résonner, un énorme vague enthousiasme se fera sentir dans tout l’amphithéâtre du Zenith. 10 000 personnes comblées, toute âge confondu, chanteront Smoke on the Water à l’unisson avec le groupe britannique, les bras en air.

Les superbes Hush et Black Rain vont clôturer cette véritable leçon magistrale de rock classique et psychédélique.

Notons les superbes lumières et excellente l’animation visuelle projetée sur les écrans en fond de scène qui mettrons chaque musicien en vedette.

Respect et reconnaissance !  Les années sont passées mais leurs titres emblématiques n’ont pas pris une ride et nous enchantent comme au premier jour.

On quittera les lieux avec des grands sourires et des étoiles dans les yeux. Une nouvelle journée de festival à la hauteur de nous attentes !

As promised, today we continue the review of the HEAVY WEEK-END festival which took place in Nancy from June 21 to 23 with the second day: June 22, 2024.

After a triumphant first day, it’s the turn of SORTILEGE, PRETTY MAIDS, MEGADETH and DEEP PURPLE to set the Zenith on fire.

SORTILEGE – Energetic and catchy show

On this Saturday neither too hot nor too cold, perfect for concerts, SORTILEGE, the only French band on the festival’s line-up, starts hostilities at 5:30 p.m.

Formed in the early 80s, after a self-title EP, 2 cult albums (Métamorphose and Larmes de Héros) and four years of touring, the heavy and power metal band is putting an end to its career to come back in force for 30 years. With a new line-up, they will release Phoenix in 2021 and then Apocalypso in 2022.

If it’s a bit quiet at the beginning of the afternoon at the Zenih in Nancy, Christian “Zouille” Augustin (Vocals), Olivier “Commandant” Spitzer (Rhythm Guitar / Backing Vocals), Bruno “Turbo” Ramos (Guitar), Sébastien “Shag” Bonnet – (Bass / Backing Vocals), Clément “Cadet” Rouxel (Drums) are ready to put the fire from the beginning of their set.

Starting with Amazone, an excellent track emblematic of their career, the band will offer us a set list in the form of a journey through their old (Chasse le Dragon, Délire d’un fou) and recent (Posseidon, Vampire) discography, a great opportunity for fans to listen to their favourite tracks and for others, who don’t know the band, to become familiar with their sound. 

Fast riffs, an effective rhythmic, catchy heavy metal, we have a very dynamic stage performance with all the musicians who jump and move all over the stage carrying the audience along with them.

The pit is not crowded but there is a very nice atmosphere, the audience packed in front of the stage seems to know the songs by heart and reacts to each song in a hurry.

The flames located around the pit and the stalls are already making their appearance and reinforce the power of the show! 

The show goes by very quickly and will be closed with another track very acclaimed by the fans, Sortilège.

We’re already getting ready to welcome the next band!  

PRETTY MAIDS – excellent melodic hard rock and great elegance

PRETTY MAIDS is a Danish melodic hard rock band also formed in the early 80s and which is quite rare in France. This is their first concert in six years in France, as the very charismatic frontman will remind us. 

Formed by two original members Ronnie Atkins (vocals) and Ken Hammer (guitar) – joined by Rene Shades (bass), Allan Sørensen (drums) and Chris Laney (keyboards and guitar), the band will offer us a nice overview of their extensive discography (15 studio albums, the latest, Undress Your Madness was released in 2019). Fast heavy tracks alternate with powerful ballads.

Energetic solos, superb melodies, a very dynamic rhythm, the quartet is in a playful mood and very complicit at the beginning of the evening!  The excellent classic of the 80s of the “Back to Back” will wake everyone up with its frenzied riffs and Atkins’ very percussive voice!

On the program we will find some band’s classics, a track from the lastesr album, Sepentine, but also, a beautiful cover of John Skyes, Please Don’t Leave me. 

The frontman moves with ease throughout the stage and keep communicating with the audience. He makes signs, smiles, winks and brandishes his microphone and constantly encourages them to make noise and clap his hands. He knows very well how to entertain the audience who appreciate this very vitaminized show.

Mediators are thrown into the crowd and everyone hurries to catch up with their own. The atmosphere is getting hotter and hotter. The sound is excellent, and the lights are gradually starting to appear.

Two classics of the band Love Game and Future World will end this solid and elegant show that should not be missed. Happy to finally have the opportunity to discover them live. 

First fashion point of the festival: we quickly notice the elegance and class of the Scandinavian band: flowing shirts, jackets, hats and pretty accessories. For the moment, the prize for elegance is awarded to Pretty Maids!

MEGADETH – A prodigious dose of Thrash Metal!

More and more MEGADETH T Shirts around us, a sign that it will soon be Dave Mustaine & company’s turn to take the stage. I didn’t have the opportunity to see them on this tour, so I was looking forward to this concert with a lot of impatience. 

The start with The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead! Out of the sublime the latest eponymous album is enough for the many fans present to burst with joy.

The sacred monster with long red hair (Dave of course!) dressed all in black (small detail, the shirt is unbuttoned at the belly, but it doesn’t seem to bother him) is in Olympic shape and constantly moves on the stage while carefully observing the delirious crowd.  He seems to be in a very good mood, because in addition to his usual festival of grimaces, we will see many smiles and friendly gestures.

The band’s great classics follow one another without a pause: Hangar 18, Sweating Bullets, Tornado of Souls, Symphony of Destruction, Peace Sells. The atmosphere quickly flares up under the fabulous salvo of thrash metal served with precision.

The fans are getting hotter and hotter, the pit is almost packed now (as on the first day the barriers between the stalls and the pit have been removed) sings and jumps with ardor while the slammers are more and more present.

A tout le monde with be sung with great emotion by the whole audience and the frontman seems very happy. He will introduce us to his faithful collegues: James LoMenzo, back in the band since 2021, who hammers his bass while headbanging, Dick Verbeuren unleashed behind his drums hits with power and gives us wide smiles and especially the new guitarist arrived in 2023, Teemu Mäntysaari, who already seems well integrated into the band and deliver catchy solos.

There will also be a short appearance of Vic Rattlehead, the band’s mascot, acclaim as deserved. 

The finale will be spectacular with Mechanix and of course the unmissable Holy Wars… The Punishment Due which knocks us out. Moreover, the front man will put on his box bathrobe with the Megadeth logo to leave the stage. 

The American band on fire, inflicts a big slap on us again tonight. A prodigious dose of Thrash Metal! One of the band’s best shows I’ve ever seen. 

Time to take a break and go around the village before the veterans of Deep Purple. The crowds are denser, and the food and drink stalls are crowded.

DEEP PURPLE – Masterful Classic and Psychedelic Rock

Change of register with the veterans of DEEP PURPLE. Night begins to fall slowly when the giant screen at the back of the stage broadcasts an animation that draws the band’s logo.

The time has finally come to put purple colour in the spotlight.  I haven’t had the opportunity to see them for a long time and so, still a lot of emotion and chills on my side, especially since this time, I will have the opportunity to shoot them from the photo pit.

The show starts with the fabulous Highway Star out of Machine Head, a mythical album released in 1972, an album that will be well represented tonight with other magical songs such as Lazy, Space Tracking or the legendary Smoke on the Water.

The legendary tracks will be interspersed with numerous guitar solos perfectly executed by the excellent Simon McBride, the newest member of the band, but also by keyboard solos, delivered with finesse and dexterity by Don Airey.

The rhythm section features an impeccable Ian Paice, the only musician in the band since its beginnings, who hits hard with great seriousness in his drums and a very fit Roger Glover on bass. 

As for Ian Gillan, the voice is still as beautiful, warm and melodic. Even though he is not very agile, he moves around the stage and encourages the audience.

The singer takes advantage of instrumental passages to rest in the dark between the drums and the keyboards.

And when the most famous guitar riff in the history of rock resounds, a huge vague enthusiasm will be felt throughout the Zenith amphitheater. 10,000 happy people, of all ages, will sing along Smoke on the Water together with the British band. All arms are waving in the air.

The superb Hush and Black Rain will close this masterclass of classic and psychedelic rock. Note the superb lights and excellent visual animations projected on the screens at the back of the stage which will feature each musician.

Respect and recognition!  The years have passed but their emblematic truck have not aged a bit and enchant us as on the very first day. We will leave the place with big smile and stars in our eyes.

Another day of the festival that exceed our expectations!
