J’ai eu le grand plaisir de rencontrer le guitariste Hannes Irengård qui nous a parlé de la création de ce nouvel opus, de leurs vidéos délurées, du plaisir de jouer en live, de leur relation spéciale avec la France ou des guitaristes qui ont changé sa vie. Salut Hannes, Comment vas-tu ? 

Hannes : Très bien. Je suis à Paris pour parler de notre nouvel album qu’on aime beaucoup, dont on est fiers et impatients que les gens l’écoute. 

Vous avez été très occupés l’année dernière avec beaucoup de concerts, de festivals, vous avez également sorti Hits & Pieces, une collection de singles sortis pendant la pandémie et un live enregistré à l’Olympia à Paris, quand avez-vous eu le temps d’écrire des nouvelles chansons ?

Hannes : On n’a pas eu vraiment le temps, mais on devrait faire en quelque sorte et prendre le temps d’écrire cet album. Beaucoup d’échéances qui ont été repoussées. Cela a été tout un combat. C’est toujours un combat quand on écrit des chansons et des albums avec Royal Republic.

Ce n’est pas comme si on se réunissait tous les quatre dans une pièce, faire une jam session et voir ce qui se passe. On écrit chacun de notre côté. Je suis à la maison, Pal, Adam et Jonas sont chacun chez soi. On écrit séparément, parfois deux par deux, puis on envoie à tout le monde.

Chaque fois quand on a une idée qui colle, on se réuni en studio ou dans la salle de répétition et on la transforme en une vraie chanson ensemble.  C’est donc un long processus.

Félicitations ! Rock énergique, funky, disco…LoveCop est un super album éclectique difficile de mettre dans une case ! Cette fois vous vous autoproclamez comme un groupe de « Power Disco ».  Aviez-vous l’intention d’inventer un nouveau style de musique ?

Hannes : Merci ! Ce qui est drôle avec Royal Republic, c’est qu’il n’y a pas beaucoup de choses qui se passent intentionnellement. Les choses se passent plutôt de manière très organique avec nos chansons. Parfois ça se passe bien et on a l’impression que ça colle parfaitement à Royal Republic. Parfois, on pourrait penser que c’est une chanson qui déchire, on adore, mais ça ne ressemble pas à Royal Republic.

Mais on n’a jamais une réunion de groupe pour discuter de ce qu’on fait maintenant, du genre de style qu’on veut essayer de faire, des trucs comme ça.

Ça arrive d’une manière très organique et on a fait beaucoup de détours. Ce n’est jamais un chemin droit. Personne ne sait vraiment où on va jusqu’à ce qu’on y arrive. Mais une fois arrivés, on sait tous qu’on y est arrivés et c’est tout !

Le videoclip de LOVECOP annonce toutes les chansons de l’album d’une manière très amusante et originale – en mouvements de danse et d’aérobique. Qu’est-ce qui vous a inspiré ?

Hannes : J’aimerais qu’on puisse s’en attribuer le mérite, mais on ne peut pas.  C’est entièrement l’idée de notre ami bien-aimé et réalisateur vidéo, Leo Åkesson. Il est avec nous depuis 2016. Il a fait la vidéo pour « When I see you dance with another » et depuis, il a fait toutes nos vidéos. C’est un ami très cher qui fait partie de la famille Royal Republic.

On fait entièrement confiance à sa vision de choses. On l’a donc appelé et on lui a dit qu’on a un nouvel album et qu’on a besoin de vidéos pour nos chansons.

Il nous a envoyé un brouillon avec ce gars qui faisait les mouvements d’aérobic et on a tous dit Oui, c’est génial !

Ensuite, il a tout mis en place- le lieu, la date – on y est allés et on a enregistré cinq vidéos en deux jours.

Quelle est l’histoire de la chanson LoveCop ?

Hannes : On a trouvé d’abord ce riff qui sonnait comme un riff classique.

Et puis, je faisais un tour dans ma cuisine avec ma guitare tout en jouant ce riff. C’est généralement comme ça que j’écris des chansons. Je me promène et je vois ce qui se passe. Et ce jour-là, j’ai commencé à chanter cette ligne I am a Love cop (il chante). Je l’ai envoyé aux autres et tout le monde a dit : on ne sait pas ce que LoveCop veut diremais on s’en fout, ça sonne très bien.

On est ensuite allés à Berlin pendant une semaine pour rassembler des idées et c’est là que nous avons terminé la chanson.

Lazer Love, quelle ballade incroyable. Honnêtement, je ne vous ai pas reconnu. Qui a eu l’idée d’écrire une power ballade ?

Hannes : On a décidé de l’écrire il y a environ six mois. Je pense qu’Adam est celui qui a dit, vous savez quoi, les gars, je pense qu’il est temps qu’on fasse une vraie Power Ballad.

On a plusieurs slows :  Follow the Sun, Like a Lover, mais c’est la première fois qu’on sort une vraie ballade. Cela sonne complètement différent. Adam est allé jusqu’au bout avec ce gros refrain et ces guitares.

C’est essentiellement ce qu’on fait la plupart du temps.  On commence avec un petit embryon puis, on essaie de le pousser jusqu’au bout, jusqu’à la limite et voir jusqu’où nous pouvons l’emmener. C’est aussi ce que qu’on a fait avec cette chanson.

Et franchement, on a été un peu stressés à cause de cette chanson. On sait que nos fans, qui sont les meilleurs fans du monde, sont ouverts d’esprit. On a fait de la country ou de l’acoustique, on a fait toutes sortes de musiques mais cette fois c’était comme si on les poussait vraiment au bout.

Je ne fais pas ça souvent mais je me souviens quand Lazer Love est sortie, j’étais sur Youtube en train de rafraîchir la page pour voir les commentaires en temps réel. Je pensais que ça pouvait aller dans les deux sens, soit on a un putain de hit, soit les gens vont vouloir nous tuer.

Mais encore une fois, les gens semblaient l’apprécier, ils l’ont aimé et je pense que c’est lié au fait qu’on aime ce qu’on fait.

On ne le fait pas parce que quelqu’un nous l’a dit. On ne le fait pas parce qu’on attend de nous de le faire. On le fait parce que nous voulons le faire, parce que cela nous semble naturel. Parce qu’on est à l’aise de le faire. Je pense que les gens apprécient ça.

Notre plus grand espoir pour cet album est que les gens viendront nous voir et que nous pourrons à nouveau mettre le sourire sur leur visage.

Votre musique parle à beaucoup de gens, elle convient à un festival de métal à un festival pop, tout le monde adore !

Hannes : Oui, c’est incroyable ! On a la chance de conquérir la plupart des gens devant qui nous jouons, qu’ils soient familiers ou pas avec le groupe.

Je pense que c’est l’une de nos forces.  On l’a dit à notre management et à notre label dès le premier jour :  on ne va pas être un grand groupe qui passe à la radio, on ne va peut-être pas avoir cet énorme single à succès, mais mettez-nous devant un public et on vous promet qu’on va le conquérir.

On est très confiants en ce qui concerne ce côté de notre groupe. On sait ce qu’on sait faire quand on est sur scène.

J’aime beaucoup My House. Pour moi, cette chanson et vidéo me fait penser au confinement. Quand notre maison était le centre de l’attention, on créait des pièces imaginaires pour faire fête… Quel est le message en réalité ? 

Hannes : C’est intéressant ton point de vue. Certainement, cela pourrait être comme tu dis. C’est à chaque auditeur de décider.

Quand on l’a écrit, c’était plus comme une fête :  c’est ma maison et je ne vais pas fermer à clé. Peu importe qui vous êtes, en quoi vous croyez ou à quoi vous ressemblez si vous êtes dans notre maison, c’est-à-dire si vous êtes à un concert Royal Republic, vous êtes les bienvenus et on va passer un bon moment ensemble.

On peut voir sur You Tube le « Behind the Scene » et on voit que vous vous este bien amusés en faisant la vidéo. Tu as un souvenir particulier du tournage ?

Hannes : Le plus spécial de ce tournage vidéo, c’est qu’il a été fait en si peu de temps : cinq vidéos et une séance photo en deux jours. C’était très stressant. Heureusement, on est de bons amis, et on est entourés de bonnes personnes qu’on aime.

En ensemble cela a été une expérience très agréable et je dirais que la principale chose que j’ai retenu de cette séance est que c’était extrêmement serré !

Vous chantez maintenant « My Pearls and shiny leather fit perfectly together» et il semble que vous avez définitivement adopté cette tenue noire avec des vestes en cuir, slims et des perles. Où sont vos vestes colorées et scintillantes que vous avez porté dans le passé ?

Hannes : Je pense qu’elles sont dans un entrepôt quelque part à Berlin. Elles sentent mauvais et ressemblent probablement à rien. On va peut-être les sortir pour une future tournée.

Qui sait ?

Prévoyez-vous d’exécuter certains mouvements qu’on peut voir dans les vidéos dans vos concerts ?

Hannes : Oui, on a pensé à essayer d’apprendre certains des mouvements que ce gars fait. On a aussi pensé à le faire venir sur scène avec nous. On a beaucoup d’idées et de scénarios différents dans notre tête.

On est en train de répéter les nouvelles chansons et le nouveau set pour les festivals d’été et les concerts du reste de l’année et en nous connaissant, je pense qu’il y aura certainement de la danse et beaucoup de mouvement sur scène.

As-tu une chanson du nouvel album en particulier que tu aimerais jouer en live ?

Hannes : Je suis vraiment impatient à l’idée de jouer Freakshow en live, parce que je pense que c’est une très bonne chanson. C’est un morceau simple, avec un riff de blues rock old school assez lent. J’ai hâte de le jouer en live.

L’ouverture d’esprit est une grande partie de notre ADN.

Vous jouez toujours le covers de Metallica ou Motorhead, allez-vous en jouer d’autres ?

Hannes : Ce qui est drôle et que le plan est toujours : pas de Metallica, pas de Motorhead, rien mais connaissant Adam, j’ai du mal à le voir s’empêcher de jouer Metallica parce que c’est ce qu’il aime le plus. Donc oui, nous prévoyons de ne pas faire du Metallica mais il y aura Metallica de toute façon.

Vous avez fait un album live, un album acoustique, avez-vous avez un projet que vous aimeriez faire un jour et ce n’est pas encore fait ?

Hannes : Rien n’est encore dit mais ce qu’on a vraiment envie de faire, c’est une suite aux NoseBreakers, l’album acoustique.

On a beaucoup aimé. C’était une super tournée et on a pu jouer du violon, de la mandoline. On aimerait bien le refaire mais rien de prévu pour le moment.

C’est dans la nature de notre groupe d’essayer de nouvelles choses, des choses différentes et de ne pas nous répéter. Il y aura de nouveaux projets à venir, c’est sûr.

Kurt Cobain a bouleversé mon monde et rien n’a été pareil depuis…. Slash est l’homme le plus cool qui ait jamais marché sur la planète.

La France vous aime. Vos concerts sont Sold Out, vous avez participé une émission de télévision, Taratata.  Que pensez-tu de cette relation privilégiée avec la France ?

Hannes : on joue en France depuis 13-14 ans maintenant. On a travaillé très dur et c’est très satisfaisant maintenant de voir que ce travail acharné, qu’on aime beaucoup d’ailleurs, porte enfin ses fruits.

J’ai l’impression que ça se passe en France pour nous en ce moment. On a participé à Taratata. On a travaillé depuis trois ou quatre ans pour y être et finalement, on a réussi.

C’était une magnifique expérience pour nous. On a rencontré une super équipe. Le spectacle est génial. Tu as l’occasion de jouer de la musique live, ce qui est assez rare de nos jours.

Et cela a payé pour nous, car nous avons réussi à vendre sold out le concert de Olympia, ce qui a été une très grande étape pour nous. Et maintenant, on est en train de boucler la boucle avec le fait de jouer au Zenith en novembre. C’est énorme pour nous!

On a joué au Zenith en 2011 en première partie de The Offspring et je me souviens quand on est montés tous les quatre sur cette scène pour les balances et on s’est dit, pouvez-vous imaginer les gars, il y a des groupes qui font salle comble dans ces endroits. C’est fou !

Et maintenant, tout d’un coup, on est ici et on fera la même chose dans quelques mois. C’est l’un de ces moments quand on doit se pincer pour voir si c’est vrai. C’est incroyable dans tous les sens du terme. Nous aimons être ici, en France. C’est génial.

Parlons un peu de toi en tant que guitariste. Quand as-tu commencé la guitare et qu’est-ce qui t’a donné l’envie ?

Hannes : J’ai commencé à jouer à la guitare à 12 ans. Jusque-là, j’ai joué au piano de la musique classique pendant 6 ans.

Et tout d’un coup Kurt Cobain est arrivé. Il m’a époustouflé et il a bouleversé mon monde et rien n’a été pareil depuis. Kurt Cobain et Nirvana, mais surtout, Kurt a été la raison pour laquelle j’ai pris la guitare.

Mais même avant, j’écoutais Jimi Hendrix, Cream et Led Zeppelin et j’ai grandi avec Bob Dylan et Neil Young.

J’ai économisé un peu d’argent, et j’ai acheté une guitare électrique et je ne l’ai jamais lâchée.

Slash a été également énorme pour moi et il l’est toujours. Je pense toujours que Slash est l’homme le plus cool qui ait jamais marché sur la planète.

Qu’y a-t-il dans ta playlist en ce moment ? 

Hannes : Chaque fois que je trouve une chanson que j’aime vraiment, je la mets dans mon téléphone.

Laisse-moi voir (il vérifie son téléphone) :  Dry Your Eyes – The Street, Dream A Little Dream of Me – The Mamas & The Papas, The Best – Tina Turner, Dear Landlord – Bob Dylan, Lounge Act – Nirvana, Coming from the cold – Joni Mitchell et aussi  The Beach Boys, Tracy Chapman, Shinead O’Connor, Coldplay, Bob Marley, c’est dans tous les sens.

Eclectique comme le son de Royal Republic…

Hannes : ça fait partie du groupe. On aime le rock and roll, mais nous sommes surtout des mélomanes. On n’a jamais eu de frontières… on n’a jamais tracé une ligne… L’ouverture d’esprit est une grande partie de notre ADN.

Pour moi, avoir une playlist comme celle-ci est tout à fait naturel. Ça a toujours été le cas: j’écoutais toujours de tout, du grunge à la musique classique en passant par le hip hop et le rap. Il ya de la bonne musique partout. Je ne vois pas pourquoi on devrait se limiter.

Quelles sont tes attentes pour LoveCop ?

Hannes : Je pense que la façon dont nous avons assemblé cet album nous rend très, très fiers. C’est suffisant pour nous quatre. Ensuite, on espère évidemment que les gens viendront à nos concerts et qu’ils seront plus heureux que jamais. 

C’est essentiellement ce que nous faisons et c’est pourquoi nous sommes ici. C’est donc notre plus grande attente et notre plus grand espoir pour cet album est que les gens viendront nous voir que nous pourrons à nouveau mettre le sourire sur leur visage.

C’est notre plus grande attente de cet album. Si on était en début de la carrière, on s’attendait peut-être d’avoir un énorme hit qui soit jouée à la radio dans le monde entier 24 heures sur 24, 7 jours sur 7, mais maintenait cela semble moins important pour être honnête.

Ce n’est plus ce qui nous intéresse parce que on a appris qu’on est plutôt motivés par les tournées, par le fait de jouer live, de rencontrer des gens, de créer des souvenirs et de bons moments.

Et on espère que cela va continuer. Espérons qu’on sera de mieux en mieux pour nous et qu’on sera de plus en plus grand, ce n’est pas une mauvaise chose évidemment, mais le principal espoir et attente est que ce train continue à rouler et qu’on puisse continuer à faire ce que nous faisons et ce que nous aimons faire. Nous nous considérons très chanceux de pouvoir le faire.

Je veux dire, après tout, pour nous, c’est le meilleur travail du monde. On espère que nous pourrons continuer à faire ce que nous faisons.

Hey Hannes, How are you?

Hannes: I’m very good. I’m in Paris and I’m talking to you about our new album that we are very fond of and proud of and excited to have people listening to.

You guys have been very busy last year with a lot of concerts, festivals, you also released Hits & Pieces, a collection of singles released during the pandemic and a live recorded in Olympia, Paris. When did you have time to write new music?

Hannes: We didn’t really have time, but we sort of had to make time to write this album. A lot of deadlines that have been pushed. It’s been quite a struggle. It is always a struggle when we write songs and albums with Royal Republic.

It’s not like the four of us get in a room, jam and see what happen and put it out there. It’s more like we sit separate. I am at home, Pal is at home, Adam and Jonas are at home. We write separately, sometimes we write together like two and two, and then we send it out to everyone. Whenever there’s an idea that sticks with the four of us, we got together in the studio or in the rehearsal room and we turn it into a proper song together.

So, it’s a long process, it’s not something that comes easy for us.  

Congratulations! It’s a great album. As usual, energetic rock, funky, eclectic…with Love Cop you proclaimed yourself as a “Power Disco” band.   Was it your intention to invent a new style of music?

Hannes :  Thank you ! The funny thing with Royal Republic is that’s not a lot of stuff happen intentionally. It’s more like things happen very organically and sometimes It turns out well and it feels like this totally goes under the Royal Republic umbrella. This fits. Sometimes, we might think that this is a kick ass song, we love it, but it does not feel like Royal Republic.

But we never sat down and have a band meeting and discussing like what we do now, what kind of style we wanna try out and make, stuff like that. It happened very organically and then we go on a lot of detours. It’s never a straight path. We go on a lot of detours, and no one is really sure where we are going until we get there. But once we arrived, we all know and feel that we have arrived, and this is it!

The video for Love Cop announced all the songs of the album in a very fun and original way – with these dance and aerobic moves. What inspired you?

Hannes : I wish we could take credit for this but we cannot.  This is entirely our beloved friend and video director Leo Åkesson’s idea. He has been with a us since 2016. He made a video for “When I see you dance with another” and he has been doing every video since then. We completely trust Leo’s vision. He is very dear to us, he is part of Royal Republic camp and Family.

So, basically, we call Leo and we say we have a New album and we need videos for these songs. Can you make it happened?

So, he came up with this idea. He sent us a draft with this aerobic guy doing the moves and all of us said yes, this is crazy good! Then he set up a location and we went there, and we recorded five videos in two Days.

Our biggest expectation and hope for this album is that people will show up and that we will once again be able to put a smile on their faces.

What is the story of the song LoveCop?

Hannes: We came out with this riff and we instantly thinks that this sounds like a classic riff, we need this in our lives. this is great.

And then I was basically walking around my kitchen with my guitar playing this riff. This is usually how I write songs. I just walk around and see what happens. And this particularly day I started singing I am a Love cop (he is singing ) 

I sent it to the other guys and everyone was like I don’t know what the F*** LoveCop is but who gives a shit, it sounds Great! Let’s stick it ! Then we went just outside Berlin actually for a week to collect ideas and that’s when we finish the song.

Lazer Love, what an amazing ballad. Honestly, I did not recognize you. Who has the idea of writing a power ballad?

Hannes : We decided to write it a half a year ago. I think Adam was the one who said, you know what, guys, I think it’s about time that we make a proper Power Ballad.

We never did. I mean we did slow songs; Follow the Sun, Like a Lover  but it is the first time when we with put out a proper ballad.

It sounds completely different. Adam took it all the way with this big chorus and guitars. That’s basically what we do most of the time.

Usually, we start with a pretty small embryo and then we are trying push it all the way, push it to the limit, see how far we can take it. That’s what we did with this song as well.

This was one of the songs where we were bit stressed. We know our fans, who are the best fans in the world, they are open minded. I mean they have been used in a long time with country staff or acoustic staff, you know, all sorts of genres that we have been going through but this one time, it was like, OK this might like… too much… we are really pushing it here.

I don’t do that a lot but I remember when we release Lazer Love, I was on Youtube refreshing the browser to see the comments in Real time because I’ve thought this could go either way, either we have a have a fucking Smash hit or people are will want to kill us.

But again, people seem to enjoy it, people seem to like it and I think it as it has to do with a fact that, we do what we do it because we love it. We don’t do it because someone told us to do it.

We don’t it because it’s expected from us to do it. We do it because we want to do it because it feels natural to us. Because we feel comfortable doing it and I think people appreciate that in the end.

Your music is speaking to a lot of people, it’s fitting to a metal festival to a pop festival, everyone loves!

Hannes : Yes, right , that’s crazy. We are lucky enough that most people we play to either or not familial with a band, love.  We seem to win people over. I think this is one of our strengths.

We been saying this to our Management and to our label since day one like we are not going to be a big radio band, we are not going to have that sort of hit single but put us in front of an audience and will promise you that we will win them over.

So, we are very confident when it comes to that side of our band. We know what we do when we are on stage, and we know that we do it will.

I love the song My House. This song is evoking me the lockdown when we focused to our house and create some imaginary rooms and parties … what is the message actually?

Hannes: Yeah, that’s Interesting. Definitely, it could be as you say. It’s up to every listener. But when we wrote, it was more like a party, like, you know, this is my house that I’m not going to lock to door. You are Welcome. We don’t care who you are, what you believe in or what you look like. if you’re in our house, meaning if you are at a Royal Republic Concert, you are welcome.

We are going to have a good time and is going be kick ass and we are not close in the doors to anyone.

We can watch “Behind the Scene” of this video on You Tube and it looks you had a good time filming it. Any special memories of filming all these videos?

Hannes : What was most special about all these video shooting that it was done in such a short period: five videos and a photoshoot in two days. It was a very, very stressful. Thankfully, we are good friends, and we make sure that, we surround ourselves with good people that we like and enjoy being around. So, the experience in whole was a very pleasurable and nice experience. The main thing I think with brought from that session was that it was extremely tight.

Kurt Cobain turn my world upside down and nothing has been the same since…Slash is the coolest Man to walk the Planet.

You are singing now “My Pearls and shiny leather fit perfectly together”and it looks that you definitely adopt now this black outfit with leather jackets, slims and pearls. Where are you colourful, shimmer jackets that you use have in videos and concerts?

Hannes: I guess they are in a store somewhere in Berlin. They are smelling and probably looks like shit. But I know there’s still around what we have all our stuff in Berlin somewhere. We might take them out for another round in the future. Who knows?

Do you plan to execute some moves in the live shows inspired buy those we can see in the videos?

Hannes: yes, we thought about trying to learn some of the moves that this guy does, we also thought about having him doing the moves on stage.

We have a lot of different ideas and scenarios in our head. We are currently rehearsing the new songs and the new set for summer festivals and rest of the year and knowing us, I think there will be for sure some dancing and moving around on stage.

Do you have a particular song that you would like to play a live from the new album?

Hannes : I am really excited about playing Freakshow live, because I think it’s a great song. It’s a pretty straight forward, it’s like an old school blues rock kind of riff, it’s pretty slow. I am looking forward to playing it live.

You always have some Metallica or Motorhead covers in your show, do plan to introduce some New Cover?

Hannes:  the funny thing is we’ve been saying in the past year now okay when we go out for the festival, we need to put all new stuff in there. The plan is always no Metallica, no Motorhead, no nothing but knowing Adam, I have a hard time seeing him keeping himself from playing Metallica because this is what he loves the most. So yes, we plan not doing Metallica but there is going to be Metallica anyway.

The open mindedness, that’s a big part of our DNA.

You did live album, an acoustic album, do have a project that you would like to do one day and it’s not done yet.

Hannes : Nothing that we spoke yet  but what we really want to do is a follow up to the NoseBreakers, the acoustic album.

We enjoy that a lot. It was a great tour and we got to play violine and mandolin and all that stuff. So, we want to do that again and that’s been talk about different kind of projects but nothing that is plan or set yet. But yes, it lies within the nature of our band that we want trying new stuff, different stuff and not repeat ourselves. So that’s going to be new projects coming up for sure.

France loves you. Your shows are sold out, you did the TV Show Taratata.  How do you feel about this special relation with France.

Hannes: We’ve been playing in France for 13-14 years now. We’ve been around and we’ve been working very hard and it’s been very satisfying seeing that this hard work, even that we like what we do, it’s really paying off now. 

I have the feeling that it’s happening in France for us now. We had the Taratata show, that we had been working on getting for three or four years and we finally got it and pay it off.

It was a great experience for us, a great group of people, the show is awesome, you get to go there and play live music which is pretty rare these days. And it pay it off in terms of us, we manage to sell out the Olympia show which was a very big milestone for us.

And now we are kind of go in a full circle with playing Zenith in November which it’s overwhelmingly huge for us. We played Zenith in 2011 opening up for The Offspring and I remember the four of us walking up on that  stage for soundcheck and being like, can you imagine ? There are actually bands that sell these places out. That’s insane! And now suddenly, we are here, and we will be doing the same thing in some months. It’s one of those pinch yourself moment. It’s amazing in every sense of the word and we love being here . It’s great.

Let’s talk about you as a guitarist. When did you start the guitar and what makes you that is passion for guitar?

Hannes : I started playing when I was twelve. Till then, I have been playing classical piano for six years and the all of the sudden Kurt Cobain came along and he blow  me away and he turn my world upside down and nothing has been the same since.

Kurt Cobain and Nirvana, but the specially, Kurt was pretty much the reason I pick up the guitar. But even before that I was listen to Jimi Hendrix and Cream and Led Zeppelin and I grew up with Bob Dylan and Neil Young.

Slash also was huge for me as well and he still is. I still think Slash is the coolest Man to walk the Planet.

I saved some money, and I bought an electric guitar and I never left back.

What’s on your current playlist?

Hannes: Whenever I find a song that I really dig, I put it in my phone. It’s very eclectic. Let me see (he is checking his phone).  I have Dry Your Eyes – The Street, Dream A Little Dream of Me – The Mamas & The Papas, – The Best – Tina Turner, Dear Landlord – Bob Dylan, Lounge Act – Nirvana, Coming from the cold – Joni Mitchell and also The Beach Boys, Tracy Chapman, Shinead O’Connor, Coldplay, Bob Marley, it’s all over the place.

You are right – eclectic like Royal Republic sound

Hannes: that’s such a big part of the band. We love rock and roll but most of all we are music Lovers. So, you know we never had boundaries…like this is where we draw the line… the open mindedness that’s a big part of our DNA.

For me, having a playlist like this is completely natural. It’s always been like this: I always listen to everything from grunge to classical music to hip hop and rap. That’s so much good music all over the place. I don’t see why would you want to limit yourself?

What are your expectations for LoveCop?

Hannes: I think the fact how we put the album together that we are very, very proud of this. It’s enough for the four of US. Then we hope that people to show up at our shows and be happier than ever.

That’s basically what we do and that’s why we are here. So that’s our biggest expectation and hope for this album is that people will show up and that we will once again be able to put a smile on their faces.

That’s the big expectation. I mean earlier in our career; the expectation would be like maybe having a song like a proper hit to be played on the radio all over the world 24/7 but that seems this less important to be honest.

It’s not what is about for us anymore because we learned that we are not about that, we are about the touring side of things, we are about playing live, we are about meeting people, we are about creating memories and goods times. That’s the expectations for this to keep rolling.

Hopefully, it goes better and bigger, that’s not a bad thing obviously, I am not saying that but the main hope and expectation is for this train to keep rolling and that we get keep doing what we are doing and what we love doing. We consider ourselves very blessed to be able to do this.

I mean after all for us it’s the best job in the world. The expectation is that we get to keep doing what we do.
