En découvrant l’affiche du HEAVY WEEK-END en novembre dernier, on n’en revenait pas. SCORPIONS, JUDAS PRIEST, MEGADETH, DEEP PURPLE, ALICE COOPER, EXTREME autant des légendes du hard rock et du heavy metal réunis sur la même scène lors d’un weekend, c’était incroyable !

Le festival californien, POWER TRIP, avait rassemblé en octobre 2023  Iron Maiden, Guns N’Roses, Metallica, Tool et AC/DC dans un seul weekend, et voilà qu’en France, c’est de côté du Zenith de Nancy que Gérard Drouot Productions nous invitait à ce même type d’événement le 21, 22 et 23 juin 2024 dans le cadre de Nancy Open-Air.

Entre temps cinq autres artistes s’étaient rajoutés à cette prestigieuse affiche : THE LAST INTERNATIONALE, SORTILEGE, PRETTY MAIDS, AYRON JONES et TOM MORELLO.

C’est dont avec beaucoup d’impatience qu’on a pris la route vers Nancy en ce 21 juin, jour de Fête de la Musique, curieux et super motivés de découvrir cette première édition de rêve du HEAVY WEEK-END et bien évidement avec l’intention de visiter pour la première fois la magnifique l’ancienne capitale du duché de Lorraine.

Sous une météo assez incertaine avec quelques nuages menaçants on arrive sur le site du festival vers 18 h. L’accès aux parkings est fluide et bien organisé. Pareil pour l’accès à l’espace media facile et sympathique dans une grande tente situe juste à côté de la scène. 

Inauguré en 1993, le Zénith de Nancy présente la particularité d’être modulable. Cette salle de 6 000 places, en forme de guitare électrique, déploie sa scène réversible à ciel ouvert, se transformant ainsi en un vaste amphithéâtre pouvant accueillir jusqu’à 25 000 personnes (gradins et fosse).

On est tout de suite impressionnés par ce vaste et agréable espace entouré par un écrin de verdure. La scène est grande sans être gigantesque avec deux écrans de côté.

En attendant le premier concert, on profite de l’excellente playlist concoctée avec amour par Mathieu David, qui sera aux platines à l’ouvertures de portes et entre les concerts pendant tout le weekend.

THE LAST INTERNATIONALE – Boules d’énergie ROCK N’ROLL

C’est THE LAST INTERNATIONALE qui a la lourde tâche d’ouvrir les festivités à 18h30. En cette fin d’après-midi un brin pluvieuse, il n’y a pas beaucoup de monde dans la fosse et les gradins sont clairsemés.

Pas facile de passer en premier dans un festival, mais le duo new yorkais formé par Delila Paz (chant, piano, basse, guitare) et Edgey Pires (guitare) accompagné par Pierre Belleville à la batterie et Andrés Malta à la basse et aux claviers ne se décourage pas.

Fermement déterminés de mettre le feu, ils attaquent dès le début avec Kick Out the Jams (MC5 cover) et les excellents Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Indian Blood et 1984.

La ravissante chanteuse, toute de cuir et clous vêtue, court tout au long de la scène ainsi que sur l’avancé, se jette à genoux et encourage fermement le public, qu’elle trouve trop calme, de bouger et chanter avec elle.

Edgey Pires ne reste pas de marbre non plus. Le guitariste envoi des riffs hallucinants, saute, secoue la tête et se tortille dans tous les sens, en brandissant sa guitare après chaque morceau.

Pour interpréter Soul on Fire, le superbe morceau titre de leur deuxième album sorti en 2019, Delila s’installera d’abord au piano et ensuite, au fur et à mesure que le morceau monte en puissance, elle se jettera dans la foule et va courir jusqu’aux gradins pour faire chanter quelques fans avant de les prendre dans ses bras.

De retour sur scène, Delila attrape la basse pour Wanted Man et continue à chauffer le public à la joindre pour chanter et taper dans les mains.

La réputation du duo new yorkais d’être des véritables boules d’énergie sur scène est de nouveau confirmée.

Hard Times et 1968 termineront tout en beauté ce show énergique. Delila redescendra de nouveau au milieu de l’audience conquise qui grossi petit à petit et réagit un peu plus vers la fin du show.

Du blues rock brut et efficace, des textes révolutionnaires et engagés posés sur des riffs énervés, une voix soul puissante et passionnée et une rhythmique en feu, THE LAST INTERNATIONALE nous offre un show électrique en ce début de festival. Toujours hyper contente de les voir.

Alors que le public continue à arriver et ceux qui portent les T Shirt Scorpions sont de plus en plus nombreux, on profite pour faire un tour dans la partie « village » du festival : il ya des stands de nourritures variés, de bars à boissons et bien évidement les stands de merchandising.

EXTREME – Funky Hard Rock mélodieux et bien costaud

La fosse est un peu plus fournie et c’est le tour du groupe américain, EXTREME de mettre le feu sur la scène du Zenith.

Formé au milieu des années 80, le groupe a connu un grand succès grâce à l’album Pornograffitt,i sorti en 1990, et comme l’illustration de sa pochette se trouve en fond de scène, on comprend que cet album sera mis à l’honneur ce soir. Et effectivement ça sera le cas avec pas moins de 5 extraits dans le set list (parmi eux les explosives Decadence Dance et Get the Funk Out).

Le groupe composé des trois membres originels Gary Cherone au chant, Nuno Bettencourt à la guitare et au chant, Pat Badger à la basse rejoints à la batterie par Kevin Figueiredo (depuis 2007) vient de sortir un nouvel album, SIX, qui sera aussi représenté par deux excellents chansons  #rebel et Rise. 

Gary Charonne déchainé ne tient pas en place. Bandana dans les cheveux et magnifique veste pailletée, le chanteur danse, saute et fait toute sorte de poses quasi acrobatiques, tout en encourageant le public de faire plus de bruit.

Nuno Bettencourt est plutôt calme et posé. C’est peut-être son attelle sur la jambe droite qui l’empêche de trop bouger, mais en tout cas, ça ne l’empêche pas d’envoyer des riffs acères et efficaces.

Il est très communicatif, il fait quelques blagues et nous parle de son magnifique chapeau acheté à Paris et avoue que à son âge (58 ans !!), le meilleur moment du concert est quand il peut s’assoir « c’est comme avoir un orgasme entre deux morceaux ». Et une fois assis, il va nous offrir un magnifique solo acoustique.

Pat Badger arbore un magnifique Stetson et martèle impeccablement la basse tandis que Kevin Figueiredo fait son boulot très sérieusement.

La superbe ballade More Than Words qui figure également sur Pornograffitti sera interprété d’une manière très intimiste avec le chanteur et le guitariste très complices assis au milieu de la scène. Un moment d’émotion que tout le monde essaie de capter avec son téléphone.

L’audience, plus nombreuse, les applaudissent chaleureusement. Entre temps les barrières entre les gradins et la fosse sont tombées et beaucoup sont descendus près de la scène pour mieux profiter du concert.

Je n’avais jamais vu live le groupe américain et j’ai été totalement impressionnée par leur prestation ultra énergique ! Funky hard rock mélodieux et bien costaud.

SCORPIONS – Exceptionnel, toujours au sommet du hard rock

A 22h, c’est enfin le tour de vétérans SCORPIONS. La fosse est quasiment remplie, pareil pour les gradins. La nuit tombe, on peut donc bénéficier pleinement de l’explosion des lumières et des écrans géants installés sur la scène. Les flammes placées dans la fosse et au tour de gradins se font de plus en plus présentes.

Un écran de fond montrant une sublime image de la Terre, beaucoup de fumée et l’infatigable groupe allemand formé actuellement par Klaus Meine (Chant), Rudolf Schenker (guitares et fondateur du groupe en 1965), Matthias Jabs (guitare), Paweł Mąciwoda (bass) et Mikkey Dee (batterie) fait son apparition sous de fortes ovations d’un public chaud bouillant.

Les Allemands sont de retour cette année pour célébrer le quarantième anniversaire de l’album Love at first sting mais avec une discographie si impressionnante (19 albums dont le dernier un date, Rock Believer, sorti en 2022) on s’attend évidement à une set list variée, ce qu’ils ne manqueront pas de nous offrir.

Les incontournables Coming Home, Bad Boys Running Wild, Delicate Dance, la magnifique Send Me an Angel, le tube planétaire Wind of Change (avec les paroles du premier verse changés), Tease Me Please Me, Big City Nights et bien sur Still Loving You et Rock You Like a Hurricane vous avez compris, tout était là !

Le public de tous les âges ne manquera pas de chanter à l’unisson sur les grands hits du groupe, encouragé par le chanteur Klaus Meine qui semble assez diminué physiquement (le chanteur a eu quelques problèmes de santé en mars). Il semble avoir du mal à se déplacer et il s’appuie sur son micro, mais il est toujours en forme pour chanter à plein poumons.

C’est plutôt le duo de guitaristes Rudolf Schenker et Matthias Jabs qui font le spectacle, se donnant à cœur joie à des solos et de duels de riffs incendiaires. Ils se déplacent ensemble énergiquement ou à tour de rôle sur l’avancé de la scène en faisant des gestes et des mimiques vers le public. Dans le pit photo c’est difficile de les suivre. Inutile de vous décrire mon enthousiasme de revoir le groupe de Hanovre et cette fois avoir le grand privilège de les photographier depuis le pit photo. Quel plaisir de se trouver nez à nez avec les monstres du hard rock.

Evidement Mikkey Dee, le maitre incontestable de la baguette, se défonce derrière son kit et nous offrira un long solo fabuleux ! et bien sûr il ne faut pas oublier, Paweł Mąciwoda, un peu plus réservé, mais qui tiens la cadence impeccablement à la basse.

Le show est remarquable, parfaitement maitrisé, le jeu de scène millimétré.

Des lumières éblouissantes et des images spectaculaires s’ajoutent au son, tout simplement parfait.

Un show exceptionnel qui confirme la réputation d’un groupe légendaire toujours au sommet du hard rock.

Le public de tous les âges a énormément apprécié chaque moment de ces 90 minutes de show et s’est investi à chaque moment à coup de headbanging ou à chant de folie.

Un moment nostalgique pour certains ou une grande découverte pour d’autres mais pour tous surement une expérience inoubliable !

Une première journée triomphale au Zenith de Nancy.

J’ai commencé à écrire ce live report en un seul morceau, mais comme finalement j’avais beaucoup de choses à dire et plein de photos à vous montrer, j’ai décidé de le publier en 3 volets. When we discovered the line up of the HEAVY WEEK-END last November, we couldn’t believe it. SCORPIONS, JUDAS PRIEST, MEGADETH, DEEP PURPLE, ALICE COOPER, EXTREME so many legends of hard rock and heavy metal gathered on the same stage for a weekend, incredible!

After the Californian festival POWER TRIP had brought together successfully in October 2023 Iron Maiden, Guns N’Roses, Metallica, Tool and AC/DC in a single weekend, it was at Zenith in Nancy that Gérard Drouot Productions invited us to a similar event on June 21, 22 and 23, 2024 as part of Nancy Open-Air.

In the meantime, five other artists have been joined to this prestigious line-up: THE LAST INTERNATIONALE, SORTILEGE, PRETTY MAIDS, AYRON JONES and TOM MORELLO

It is therefore with great impatience that we took the road to Nancy on this June 21st, the day of the Fête de la Musique, curious and super motivated to discover this first dream edition of the HEAVY WEEKEND and of course with the intention of visiting for the first time the magnificent former capital of the Duchy of Lorraine.

Under a rather uncertain weather with a few threatening clouds, we arrive at the festival site around 6 p.m. Access to the car parks is fluid and well organised. The same goes for the easy and nice access to the media area, a large tent located right next to the stage.

Inaugurated in 1993, the Zénith de Nancy has the particularity of being modular. This 6,000-seat venue, in the shape of an electric guitar, deploys its reversible open-air stage, transforming itself into a vast arena that can accommodate up to 25,000 people (seats and pit).

We are immediately impressed by this vast and pleasant space surrounded by greenery. The stage is large without being gigantic with two screens on each side.  While waiting for the first concert, we enjoy the excellent playlist concocted with love by Mathieu David, who will be at the turntables when the doors open as well as between the concerts throughout the weekend.

THE LAST INTERNATIONALE – Endless ROCK N’ROLL Energy

It is THE LAST INTERNATIONALE who has the difficult task of opening the festivities at 6:30 p.m. At the end of this slightly rainy afternoon, there are not many people in the pit and the stands are sparse. 

It’s not easy to perform first to a festival, but the New York duo formed by Delila Paz (vocals, piano, bass, guitar) and Edgey Pires (guitar) accompanied by Pierre Belleville on drums and Andrés Malta on bass and keyboards is not discouraged.

Firmly determined to set the fire, they attack from the beginning with Kick Out the Jams (MC5 cover) and the excellent Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Indian Blood and 1984. The lovely singer, all in leather and studs, runs all along the stage as well as on the front, throws on her knees and firmly encourages the audience, whom she finds too calm, to move and sing with her.

Edgey Pires is not unmoved either. The guitarist sends hallucinating riffs, jumps, shakes his head and squirms in all directions, brandishing his guitar after each song. 

To perform Soul on Fire, the superb title track of their second album released in 2019, Delila will first sit at the piano and then, as the track gets stronger, she will jump into the crowd and run to the stands to make a few fans sing before hugging them.

Back on stage, Delila grabs the bass for Wanted Man and continues to warm up the audience to join her to sing and clap her hands. The New York duo’s reputation for being real balls of energy on stage is once again confirmed.

Hard Times and 1968 will end this energetic show in style. Delila will go down again in the middle of the conquered audience which grows little by little and reacts a little more towards the end of the show.

Raw and effective blues rock, revolutionary and committed lyrics set on edgy riffs, a powerful and passionate soul voice and a rhythmic on fire, THE LAST INTERNATIONALE offers us an electric show in the beginning of the festival. Always super happy to see them.

As the public continues to arrive and those wearing the Scorpions T-Shirts are more and more numerous, we take the opportunity to take a tour in the “village” part of the festival: there are various food stands, bars and of course, the merchandising stands.

EXTREME – Funky Melodious and solid Hard Rock

The pit is a little fuller and it’s the turn of the American band, EXTREME to set fire to the Zenith stage.

Formed in the mid-80s, the band was very successful thanks to the album Pornograffitti released in 1990, and since the illustration of its cover is at the back of the stage, we understand that this album will be highlighted tonight. And indeed, it will be the case with no less than 5 singles in the set list (among them the explosive Decadence Dance and Get the Funk Out).

The band composed of the three original members Gary Cherone on vocals, Nuno Bettencourt on guitar and vocals, Pat Badger on bass joined on drums by Kevin Figueiredo (since 2007) has just released a new album, SIX, which will also be represented by two excellent songs #rebel and Rise.  

Gary Charonne unleashed can’t stand still. With a bandana in his hair and a beautiful sequined jacket, the singer dances, jumps and does all kinds of almost acrobatic poses, while encouraging the audience to make more noise.

Nuno Bettencourt is rather calm. Maybe it’s his brace on his right leg that prevents him from moving too much, but in any case, it doesn’t prevent him from sending sharp and effective riffs. 

He is very communicative, he makes a few jokes and tells us about his beautiful hat bought in Paris and admits that at his age (58 years old!!), the best moment of the concert is when he can sit down “it’s like having an orgasm between two songs”. And once seated, he will offer us a magnificent acoustic solo.

Pat Badger with his magnificent Stetson hammers the bass impeccably while Kevin Figueiredo does his job very seriously behind the drums.

The superb ballad More Than Words, which also appears on Pornograffitti, will be performed in a very intimate way with the singer and the guitarist very complicit sitting in the middle of the stage. A moment of emotion that everyone tries to capture with their phones.

The audience, which was larger, applauded them warmly. In the meantime, the barriers between the stands and the pit have fallen and many have gone down to the stage to better enjoy the concert.

It was my first EXTREME concert, and I was totally impressed by their ultra energetic performance! Funky, melodious and solid Hardrock.

SCORPIONS –Legends on the top of hard rock. Exceptional!

At 10 p.m., it’s finally the turn of SCORPIONS. The pit is full packed, as well as the stands. Night falls, so we can take full advantage of the explosion of lights and giant screens installed on the stage. The flames placed in the pit and around the syands are becoming more and more present.

A background screen showing a sublime image of the Earth, a lot of smoke and the indefatigable German band currently formed by Klaus Meine (vocals), Rudolf Schenker (guitars and founder of the band in 1965), Matthias Jabs (guitar), Paweł Mąciwoda (bass) and Mikkey Dee (drums) appears under loud ovations from a boiling hot audience.

The Germans are back this year to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the album Love at first sting but with such an impressive discography (19 albums, the last of which dates, Rock Believer, released in 2022) we obviously expect a varied set list, which they will not fail to offer us.

The unmissable Coming Home, Bad Boys Running Wild, Delicate Dance, the magnificent Send Me an Angel, the worldwide hit, Wind of Change (with the lyrics of the first verse changed), Tease Me Please Me, Big City Nights and of course, Still Loving You and Rock You Like a Hurricane you understood, everything was there! 

Audiences of all ages will be sure to sing along to the band’s great hits, encouraged by singer Klaus Meine who seems quite physically diminished (the singer had some health problems in March). He seems to have trouble moving around and he leans on his microphone, but he is still in good shape to sing at the top of his lungs.

It’s the guitar duo Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jabs who put on a show, giving themselves to solos and incendiary riff duels. They move together energetically or each one separately the advance of the stage, smiling, making gestures and mimics towards the audience.

In the pit photo it’s difficult to follow them. Usless to describe my enthusiasm to see the band from Hanover again and this time to have the great privilege of shooting them, so close from the pit photo. What a pleasure to find yourself face to face with the monsters of hard rock!

Obviously Mikkey Dee, the undisputed master of the sicks, is unleashed behind his kit and will offer us a fabulous long solo! and of course we must not forget, Paweł Mąciwoda, a little more reserved, but who holds the cadence impeccably on the bass.

The show is remarkable, perfectly mastered, the stage play millimetric. Dazzling lights and spectacular images add to the perfect sound.

An exceptional show that confirms the reputation of a legendary band still at the top of hard rock!

The audience of all ages greatly appreciated every moment of these 90 minutes of show and invested themselves at every moment with headbanging or crazy singing.

A nostalgic moment for some or a great discovery for others but for all surely an unforgettable experience!

A triumphant first day at the Zenith in Nancy.
