AVATAR – Huge Metal Circus – Le Plan, Ris-Orangis, 16.03.2024- Concert Review

Un an après leur 3 concerts archi-complets en France, dont l’Olympia à Paris, AVATAR était de retour dans l’hexagone, pour une tournée de 11 concerts, tous SOLD OUT ! Visiblement, la belle histoire d’amour Avatar – Public français est devenue très sérieuse !

Cette fois, le Métal Circus ne passait pas dans une salle parisienne mais pas très loin, à Ris-Orangis, en Essonne, au Plan, et bien évidement, on ne pouvait pas rater événement. Nous voilà donc débarquer par une très agréable soirée de printemps, le 16 mars 2024, pour la première fois dans cette salle dont j’avais entendu dire que du bien.

Certes, on ne s’attendait pas assister à un spectacle d’AVATAR trop différent de celui à l’Olympia, mais passer un samedi soir en compagne du groupe suédois dans une salle à taille humaine, c’était une idée très alléchante.

Et effectivement, ce fut une soirée absolument géniale, tout à fait mémorable et voilà pourquoi.

URNE – EXCELLENT show d’ouverture

Pour ouvrir les hostilités, URNE fait un énorme boulot ! Venu présenter leur magnifique deuxième l’album “A Feast On Sorrow” (produit par Joe Duplantier de Gojira) le trio de stoner/sludge/metalcore londonien formé par Joe Nally (basse / chant), James Cook(batterie), Angus Neyra guitare nous épate en seulement 6 morceaux.

Le son est lourd, sombre, atmosphérique. Les riffs sont puissants, la rythmique efficace et le chant alterne entre le growl puissant et le mélodique.

Les trois morceaux extraits de leur dernier album : Becoming The Ocean, A Feast On Sorrow et Desolate Heart sonnent magistralement en live.

En France pour la première fois, URNE délivre une prestation intense, quasi dramatique, énergique et émotionnellement changé. Ils ont surement gagné un bon nombre de fans car le public du Plan est visiblement enchanté et les applaudis généreusement ! Une grosse claque !

AVATAR – C’est du GRAND spectacle !

Le die hard fans d’AVATAR (comme moi) le savent. Un show d’AVATAR n’est pas seulement un concert de heavy métal, mais un véritable show théâtral, avec des éléments de cirque, de gags, des surprises, des confettis, des discours, des chorégraphies etc etc et ce soir, cela ne déroge pas à la règle.

L’éclairage magnifique, le brouillard inquiétant, le son massif, les colonnes d’étincelles, le décor avec les cabines de photomaton où les 5 musiciens apparaissant ou disparaissent, le show est millimétré, soigné, une mise en scène sans faute.

Sans oublier, bien sûr les magnifiques costumes que ses 5 musiciens arborent : les tuniques en cuir et satin rouge et noir, les pantalons noirs, les accessoires : chapeau, cape, canne et couronne et évidement le MAQUILLAGE !

THE ONE AND ONLY JOHANNES ECKERSTROM en grande forme !

Toujours un plaisir de retrouver Johannes Eckerström alias The Clown, le frontman, le chef d’orchestre, LE SHOWMAN extravagant et oh combien charismatique !

Ce soir, il est en grande forme et il va nous le montrer tout le longue du spectacle.

Avec son maquillage effrayant, ses regards perçants, ses mimiques diaboliques et son large sourire Joker-esque, il cavale sans arrêt sur scène accompagné par sa canne emblématique. Il partage de moments de complicité avec ses acolytes et s’adresse en permanence au public avec des discours drôles et sincères. Il semble très surpris d’un tel d’accueil à Ris- Orangis et ne manque pas de remercier la foule à plusieurs reprises d’être venue les voir.

Sa voix est extraordinaire et comme d’habitude, il navigue entre le chant clair et le growl sans aucun problème. Il saute, il danse, il improvise de chorégraphies ou simule un striptease. Bref, il ne tient pas en place !

Il jouera au piano la magnifique TOWER et ilfera une apparition au balcon sur Puppet Show, d’abord pour fabriquer une chien ballon, ensuite pour jouer un petit passage au trombone. Il sortira aussi d’une boite miracle pour défiler sur scène accompagné par de ballons multicolores.

Bref, c’est LE SHOWMAN qu’on ne se fatigue jamais à regarder et évidement à photographier !

Les FABULEUX musiciens d’AVATAR

Bien évidemment, il n’y a pas que le fronmant qui nous épate ! Si les tous les musiciens sont excellents à leurs instruments, ils sont tous tout aussi bons dans leurs performances théâtrales avec leur festival de grimasses et dans les tourbillons de headbaging coordonnés.

Jonas ‘Kungen’ Jarlsby et Tim Öhrstrom, les deux guitaristes complices et formidables s’unissent dans des avalanches de riffs enflammés ou s’affrontent dans des batailles des cordes alors que le très sympathique et talentueux bassiste et chanteur Henrik Sandelin accompagne merveilleusement au chant le frontman et fait belle équipe à la section rythmique avec l’implacable batteur John Alfredsson qui en plus de ses frappes puissantes, nous régale de expressions faciales super fun, nous tire dessous avec un canon de confetti ou se prend pour un robot.

AVATAR triomphe ce soir à Ris – Orangis. Leur METAL CIRCUS démentiel et grandiose attire de plus en plus du monde. Un spectacle électrique et complet !

Un public au TOP

On a vu beaucoup de visages peints dans le public de tous les âges. Et beaucoup des enfants. Johannes ne manquera pas de mentionner qu’effectivement, en France il voit souvent les gens ramener des enfants au concert de métal, ce qui est très bien.

Le public heureux ovationne et rugit d’enthousiasme à chaque morceau. Le milieu de la fosse a sauté et pogoté non-stop, des mini cicle pits se sont formés et les slameurs se sont succèdes tout au long du concert.

Les refrains ont été repris en chœur par les citoyens confirmés d’Avatar Country et les nouveaux demandeurs de citoyenneté, tous en délire. Les bras ont bougé dans le rythme et les cornes ont été brandis avec fierté après chaque chanson. L’ambiance a été torride tout au longue de concert.

Une Set List EXPLOSIVE

De l’endiablé Dance Devil Dance extrait de dernier album du même nom, sorti l’année dernière à l’incontournable Hail the Apocalypse sorti en 2014, on a voyagé dans leur vaste discographie à traves pas moins de 18 chansons.

L’hymne rebondissant The Eagle has landed, le sombre VALLEY OF DISEASE et son ambiance rouge sang à l’excellent Paint Me Red, au fantastique Bloody Angel et sa mélodie obsédante,du féroce DO YOU FEEL IN CONTROL, au colossal COLOSSUS avec son chant agressif, les guitares distordues et le rythme implacable et un John Alfredsson qui rejoint ses collègues devant la scène.

Jonas « Kungen » Jarlsby arrivera sur scène habillé de sa tenue royale, cape et couronne pour la performance de A Statue Of The King sous les acclamations chaleureuses des citoyens d’AVATAR Country.

Le très groovy THE DIRT IM BURIED IN, l’énergique Smells Like a Freakshow et l’épique HAIL THE APOCALYPSE clôtureront ce show mémorable.

LE PLAN – un lieu très agréable

Quelques mots sur Le Plan pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas. Moderne et très agréable, le lieu propose une programmation nationale et internationale éclectique pour tous les publics : du hip-hop, de la pop au rock, en passant par le reggae, la soul, le blues, les musiques électroniques, la chanson ou le jeune public.

Il y a 2 salles (830 places et 200 places) modulables consacrés aux concerts mais aussi aux activités de répétition, d’enregistrement et d’accompagnement des musiciens amateurs, préprofessionnels ou professionnels, etc Depuis son ouverture en septembre 2014, pendant sa phase construction et ce jusqu’à aujourd’hui, LE PLAN est ancré dans une démarche d’Éco-responsabilité.

Il y a des plusieurs bars, un restaurant et bien évidement un coin merchandising que ce soir avait été littéralement pris d’assaut par les Fans d’AVATAR.

Le plan nous a accueilli dans des très bonnes conditions (juste une petite remarque sur l’évacuation difficile de la salle après le concert par une seule porte). On reviendra.

AVATAR triomphe ce soir à Ris – Orangis. Toute la tournée française est un énorme succès. Leur METAL CIRCUS démentiel et grandiose attire de plus en plus du monde et ce n’est pas étonnant. Un spectacle électrique et complet ! An Absolut Huge Freak Show !

One year after their 3 sold-out concerts in France, including the Olympia in Paris, AVATAR was back in France, for a tour of 11 concerts, all SOLD OUT! Obviously, the beautiful love story of Avatar – French Public has become very serious!

This time, the Metal Circus didn’t stop in a Parisian venue but not very far, in Ris-Orangis, in Essonne, at the Plan, and of course, we couldn’t miss the event. So here we are, disembarking on a very pleasant spring evening, on March 16, 2024, for the first time in this venue of which I had heard nothing but good.

Of course, we didn’t expect to see an AVATAR show that was too different from the one at the Olympia, but spending a Saturday night with the Swedish band in a human-sized room was a very tempting idea. AVATAR is ALWAYS a good idea!

And indeed, it was a brilliant evening, quite memorable and here’s why!

URNE – A GREAT opening !

In the opening act, URNE does a huge job! Coming to present their magnificent second album “A Feast On Sorrow” (produced by Joe Duplantier of Gojira) the London stoner/sludge/metalcore trio formed by Joe Nally (bass / vocals), James Cook (drums), Angus Neyra guitar blows us away in only 6 tracks.

The sound is heavy, dark, atmospheric. The riffs are powerful, the rhythmic is effective and the vocals alternate between the powerful growl and the melodic. The three tracks from their latest album: Becoming The Ocean, A Feast On Sorrow and Desolate Heart sound masterfully live.

In France for the first time, URNE delivers an intense, almost dramatic, energetic and emotionally changed performance. They have surely gained a good number of fans because the audience of the Plan is visibly delighted and applauds them generously! A big slap!

AVATAR – It’s a HUGE SHOW!

The Die-hard fans of AVATAR (like me) know this. An AVATAR show is not only a heavy metal concert, but a real theatrical show, with circus elements, gags, surprises, confetti, speeches, choreographies etc etc and tonight it is no exception to the rule.

The magnificent lighting, the disturbing fog, the massive sound, the columns of sparks, the set with the photo booths where the 5 musicians appear or disappear, the show is meticulous, neat, a flawless staging.

Not to mention, of course, the magnificent costumes that the 5 musicians wear: the red and black leather and satin tunics, the black pants, the accessories: hat, cape, cane and crown and of course the MAKEUP!

The ONE and ONLY Johannes Eckerström!

It’s always a pleasure to see Johannes Eckerström aka The Clown, the frontman, the conductor, the extravagant and oh-so-charismatic SHOWMAN! Tonight, he’s in great shape and he’s going to show it to us throughout the show.

With his frightening makeup, piercing gazes, diabolical facial expressions and wide Joker-esque smile, he runs non-stop on stage accompanied by his iconic cane. He shares moments of complicity with his acolytes and constantly addresses the audience with funny and sincere speeches. He seems very surprised by such a welcome in Ris-Orangis and does not fail to thank the crowd several times for coming to see them.

His voice is extraordinary and as usual, he navigates between clean vocals and growls without any problems. He jumps, he dances, he improvises choreographies or simulates a strip-tease. He doesn’t stay in place!

He will play the magnificent TOWER on the piano and he will make an appearance on the balcony on Puppet Show, first to make a balloon dog, then to play a little passage on the trombone. It will also come out of a miracle box to parade on stage accompanied by multicolored balloons. In short, he is THE SHOWMAN that we never tire of looking at and of course photographing!

The FABULOS musicians of AVATAR!

Of course, it’s not just the front man that blows us away! While all the musicians are excellent at their instruments, they are equally good at their theatrical performances with their festival of grimases and in the coordinated headbanging swirls.

Jonas ‘Kungen’ Jarlsby and Tim Öhrstrom, the two complicit and formidable guitarists unite in avalanches of fiery riffs or clash in string battles while the very nice and talented bassist and singer Henrik Sandelin wonderfully support the frontman on vocals and teams up on the rhythm section with the relentless drummer, John Alfredsson who in addition to his powerful strikes, treat us to super fun facial expressions, shoot us with a confetti cannon or pretend to be a robot.

THE ENTHOUSIASTIC CROWD

We saw a lot of painted faces in the audience of all ages. And a lot of children also Johannes will not fail to mention that indeed, in France he often sees people bringing children to the metal concert, which is very good.

The happy audience gives a standing ovation and roars with enthusiasm at each track. The middle of the pit jumped and pogoted non-stop, mini cicle pits formed and slammers followed one another throughout the concert.

The choruses were sung along by confirmed citizens of Avatar Country and new citizenship applicants, all in delirium. Arms moved in the rhythm and horns were waved with pride after each song. The atmosphere was torrid throughout the concert.

From the frenzied Dance Devil Dance from the last album, released last year, to the unmissable Hail the Apocalypse released in 2014, we have travelled through their vast discography through no less than 18 songs.

The bouncing anthem The Eagle has landed, the dark VALLEY OF DISEASE and its blood-red atmosphere to the excellent Paint Me Red, to the fantastic Bloody Angel and its haunting melody, from the ferocious DO YOU FEEL IN CONTROL, to the colossal COLOSSUS with its aggressive vocals, distorted guitars and relentless rhythm and a John Alfredsson who joins his colleagues in front of the stage. Jonas “Kungen” Jarlsby will arrive on stage dressed in his regal attire, cape and crown for the performance of A Statue Of The King to the warm cheers of the citizens of AVATAR Country. The very groovy THE DIRT IM BURIED IN, the energetic Smells Like a Freakshow and the epic HAIL THE APOCALYPSE will close this memorable show.

LE PLAN – A very nice venue

A few words about Le Plan for those who don’t know. Modern and very pleasant, the venue offers an eclectic national and international programme for all audiences: from hip-hop, pop to rock, reggae, soul, blues, electronic music or young audiences.

There are 2 modular rooms (830 seats and 200 seats) dedicated to concerts but also to rehearsal activities, recording and accompaniment of amateur, pre-professional or professional musicians as well as many other activities.

Since its opening in September 2014, during its construction phase and until today, LE PLAN has been anchored in an Eco-responsibility approach. There are several bars, a restaurant and of course a merchandising corner that tonight was literally invaded by AVATAR Fans.

The PLAN welcomed us in very good conditions (maybe just a small remark about the difficult evacuation of the concert hall through a single door). We’ll be back.

AVATAR triumphs tonight at Ris-Orangis and not only. The whole French tour was a huge success. Their insane and grandiose METAL CIRCUS attracts more and more people, and this does not surprise me. An Absolut Huge Freak Show!
