Le 18 Aout 2023, le super groupe hard rock, The Dead Daisies, célébrait ses 10 ans d’existence avec la sortie d’un « Best Of », une collection de chansons issues de ses six albums studios plus deux titres inédits.

Pour célébrer l’événement, le groupe australo-américain composé par des membres des groupes légendaires : le fondateur David Lowy (Red Phoenix/Mink) – guitare, Doug Aldrich (Lion / BMR / Whitesnake/Dio) – guitare, Brian Tichy (Ozzy Osbourne/Foreigner/ Whitesnake) – batterie, Michael Devin (Whitesnake) – basse et John Corabi (Scream/Motley Crue) – chant, ce dernier de retour cette année au sein du groupe (pendant son absence Glen Hugues a assuré le chant) s’est lancé évidement dans une tournée mondiale.

Démarrée cet été en Amérique du Nord, elle est arrivée en Europe cet automne. En France, deux dates étaient à retenir :  dimanche 5 novembre 2023, à Paris à La Machine Du Moulin Rouge et mardi 7 novembre 2023, à Lyon à CCO La Rayonne.

En route donc vers la salle parisienne dans ce dimanche tranquille, prêts à assister à une bonne tranche de old school Rock N’Roll et fêter comme il se doit les 10 ans d’existence de ces chères marguerites !

Ce soir 2 premières pour moi : assister à un concert The Dead Daisies et aussi assister à un concert à La Machine Du Moulin Rouge (l’ancienne Loco), la salle située juste à côté de fameux cabaret parisien. Soyez rassurés, on ne peut pas se tromper d’entrée !

En arrivant juste au début du concert d’ouverture, je me dis que ça commence mal car en fait, la salle est déjà bondée – enfin l’espace devant la scène est plein à craquer ainsi que l’escaliers d’accès à la fosse et le minuscule balcon.

Il faut savoir que la salle a plutôt une configuration de boite de nuit avec un grand bar à l’entrée, des tables et des chaises situées dans des alcôves et au balcon. Et pour accéder à la fosse, voir piste de danse à plusieurs niveaux, il faut descende un escaler assez étroit.

Bref, inutile d’insister, je ne vais pas pouvoir prendre de photos et il est même pratiquement impossible de trouver une place pour voir quelque chose sur la scène.

Pas grave, je me contente de rester près de la régie et d’écouter Spike, ex chanteur de The Quireboys (il se fait remercier par son groupe l’année dernière), qui accompagné par sa guitare propose ce soir un set acoustique.

Le chanteur semble de bonne humeur et légèrement éméché (les peu de fois que j’ai réussi à l’apercevoir, il a un verre à la main) et entre les chansons il raconte beaucoup d’anecdotes de ses tournées, de ses rencontres, de ses problèmes d’addictions. Sa belle voix calme et Rock N’Roll, légèrement éraillée se prête aux ballades acoustiques. Il interprétera quelques morceaux du répertoire de The Quireboys et surtout beaucoup de reprises. C’est plutôt ces dernières qui plairont au public : House of the Rising Sun (The Animals), Tonight’s The Night (Rod Stewart), Le Pénitencier (Johnny Hallyday).

Je retiens surtout l’hommage à Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake), récemment décédé avec un Here I Go Again très émouvant et aussi la reprise de « Parisienne Walkways » de Gary Moore.

Le show me semble un peu long notamment à cause de ses nombreux monologues. C’est plutôt ambiance bon enfant. Le public écoute et l’accompagne quelque fois timidement aux refrains de reprises.

Une fois terminé, on essaye de se frayer un chemin pour descendre dans la fosse, mais on est vite rebuté par la foule. Je décide d’adopter une autre stratégie au moins pour le 3 premières chansons afin de pouvoir prendre quelques photos. Je demande donc à un jeune homme qui a une bonne place au balcon de me céder sa place et il accepte avec plaisir.

Je m’installe ou plutôt je m’accroche à la balustrade du balcon d’où j’ai une vue plongée sur la scène et la foule ! Pas mal ! 

The Dead Daisies débarque sur scène dans un nuage de fumée. Les guitares vrombissent, la rythmique s’affole et le show démarre sous les feux de la rampe avec Resurrected. Un titre d’ouverture super énergique qui fait bien sûr, référence au nom de leur tournée « Resurrected Tour » et qui va toute de suite nous mettre dans l’ambiance. Rise Up et Dead And Gone montent considérablement la température.

Les musiciens sont en forme et super complices. Ils ont vraiment l’air de bien s’amuser. John Corabi, très en voix, habillé en total look noir, porte une superbe écharpe imprimée marguerites (je veux la même !!!). Il encourage chaleureusement tout le monde à crier, à applaudir et à s’impliquer dans le show. Il se penche souvent vers les premiers rangs, fait de gestes, des cornes et des sourires. Les premiers rangs sont aux anges !

Doug Aldrich, gilet ouvert sur la poitrine, envoie des riffs tueurs et des solos brulants. Il joue souvent en bord de scène et se déchaine en véritable guitar hero en prenant des poses, grimaces à l’appui, au plus grand plaisir de premiers rangs, qui téléphone à la main immortalisent les moments et n’hésitent pas même à lui toucher les pieds. Mighty Doug !!!

Michael Devin, excellent à la basse assure aussi les chœurs et David Lowy, en chef d’orchestre, semblent un peu plus réservés et exécutent leurs taches avec assiduité, tout en s’offrant de moments de complicité avec John et Doug, alors que derrière, installé à la batterie surélevé, Brian Tichy envoi du lourd.

Les premiers 3 titres passées, je rends ma place au gentil jeune homme (Merci encore) et je trouve une place à côté de la régie où j’arrive plus au moins bien à voir ce qui se passe sur la scène.

Comme on s’attendait, la set list est une véritable « best of ». Les titres s’enchaînent avec efficacité. Le son et les lumières sont excellents, j’ai rarement vue une si belle qualité dans une si petite salle.  

Le public apprécie et il est réceptif même si on ne peut pas dire que c’est la folie dans la fosse. Chacun profite à sa façon de ce bon moment de Rock N’Roll.

Pour L’hymne Make Some Noise, John demandera à tout le monde de mettre les bras en l’air. La chanson mettra le feu avec sa rythmique retentissante. Face I Love, Unspoken, Bustle and Flow, Lock ‘n’Load, Born To Fly se succèdent : l’énergie et ambiance est au top. Les musiciens s’éclatent et le public s’amuse et savoure religieusement !

Brian nous offrira un solo de batterie tonitruant, tout en s’amusant à jongler avec un bon nombre de baguettes jetées dans l’air.

Un moment très agréable avec John Corabi qui prend le temps de présenter chaque musicien et lui offrir son moment de gloire :  chacun exécute un petit morceau très connu et le résultat sera un medley de morceaux classiques  qui font le délice du public qui applaudi bruyamment à chaque fois.

Pour David – Highway to hell (AC/DC), pourBrian – Living after midnight (Judas Priest), pour Michael Heaven And Hell (Black Sabbath), pour Doug « L’homme aux cheveux dorés et à la guitare dorée » ça sera Smoke On The Water (Deep Purple) et pour John –We’re An American Band (Grand Funk Railroad.)

Lors de la présentation de Michel, « le nouveau petit » de la bande, John nous raconte comment il l’a rencontré pour la première fois, quand il est allé chez son ex-femme, car effectivement Michael est le nouveau chéri de son ex-femme et il tient à lui remercier, sur un ton humoristique, de s’occuper d’elle ! Bref ce fut le moment People du show !

Le monument Fortunate Son de Creedence Clearwater Revival sera accueilli avec grand enthousiasme. Avec de chanter Mexico, Corabi se lancera dans une interrogation du public sur les boissons qu’ils aiment : « Vous avez un truc en France avec le vin. Mais aimez-vous la bière ? Et le whisky ? Vous aimez la tequila ? Voulez-vous aller faire un tour au Mexique ? » le public répondra à chaque fois. L’excellent morceau sera interprété sur une scène baignée de lumières rouges, blanches et vertes, les couleurs du drapeau mexicain.

Le combo quittera la scène après la repise Midnight Moses avant de revenir pour nous offrir Long way to go et de finir toute en beauté avec la reprise incontournable de Whitesnake, Slide it in.

Ce soir, les charismatiques The Dead Daisies nous ont offert un fabuleux moment de old school Rock N’Roll dans une ambiance très chaleureuse. Un show électrique de 1h40 avec de musiciens d’exception heureux de jouer ensemble et de donner le maximum pour combler leur public. Merci chères marguerites pour l’excellente énergie et la très sympathique communication ! Only Good Vibes!

Seul bémol pour ma part : la salle – vraiment pas pratique pour un concert :  on ne peut pas circuler, impossible de voir correctement à moins peut être de venir très tôt pour trouver une place devant la scène (mais ça reste à tester) et trop de courants d’air glacials !

J’espère vraiment les revoir bientôt dans une salle plus convenable ! Long live Rock N’ ARoll!

On August 18, 2023, the hard rock superband The Dead Daisies, celebrated its 10th anniversary with the release of a “Best Of”, a collection of songs from its six studio albums plus two previously unreleased tracks.

To celebrate the event, the Australian-American band composed of members of legendary bands: the founder David Lowy (Red Phoenix/Mink) – guitar, Doug Aldrich (Lion / BMR / Whitesnake/Dio) – guitar, Brian Tichy (Ozzy Osbourne/Foreigner/ Whitesnake) – drums, Michael Devin (Whitesnake) – bass and John Corabi (Scream/Motley Crue) – vocals, the latter returning this year to the band (during his absence Glen Hughes provided vocals) embarked on a world tour.  

Launched this summer in North America, it arrived in Europe this fall. In France, two dates were not to be missed: Sunday, November 5, 2023, in Paris, La Machine Du Moulin Rouge and Tuesday, November 7, 2023, in Lyon at CCO La Rayonne.

So, here we go to the Parisian venue, on this quiet Sunday, ready to taste a good slice of great old Rock N’ Roll and celebrate the 10 years of existence with these dear daisies!

Tonight 2 premiers for me: attending a The Dead Daisies concert and also attending a concert at La Machine Du Moulin Rouge (the former Loco), the venue located right next to the famous Parisian cabaret. Be sure, you can’t go wrong with the entry!

Arriving just at the beginning of the opening concert, I tell myself that it starts badly because in fact, the venue is already crowded – I mean, the space in front of the stage is packed as well as the access stairs and the tiny balcony.

The room looks more of a nightclub with a large bar at the entrance, tables and chairs located in alcoves and on the balcony. And to access the pit, looking like a dance floor on several levels, you have to go down a fairly narrow ladder. 

Anyway, needless to say, I won’t be able to take pictures and it’s almost impossible to find a place to see something on the stage.  No problem, I just stay close to the mixing board and listen to Spike, ex-singer of The Quireboys (he was thanked by his band last year), who accompanied by his guitar offers us an acoustic set tonight.

The singer seems in a good mood and slightly tipsy (the few times I’ve managed to catch a glimpse of him, he has a drink in his hand) and between songs tells a lot of anecdotes about his tours, his encounters, his addiction problems.

His beautiful, calm and Rock N’ Roll voice, slightly raspy lends itself to acoustic ballads. He will perform a few tracks from the repertoire of The Quireboys and especially a lot of covers.

Rather, it is the latter that will appeal to the audience: House of the Rising Sun (The Animals), Tonight’s The Night (Rod Stewart), Le Penitencier (Johnny Hallyday) I especially remember the tribute to Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake), who recently passed away with a very moving Here I Go Again and also the cover of Parisienne Walkways (Gary Moore & Phil Lynott). In a friendly atmosphere, the audience listens and sometimes timidly accompanies him to the choruses of covers.

The show seems a bit long to me, probably because of so many monologues and finally when once is finished, I try to make my way down into the pit, but I am quickly put off by the crowd.

I decide to adopt another strategy at least for the first 3 songs, so that I can take some pictures. So, I ask a young man who has a good seat on the balcony to give me his place and he gladly accepts.  I install myself or rather I cling to the balcony railing, from where I have a bird’s-eye view of the stage and the crowd! Not bad!

Finally, The Dead Daisies arrive on stage in a cloud of smoke. The guitars roar, the rhythm section goes crazy and the show starts in the spotlight with Resurrected. A super energetic opening track that of course refers to the name of their tour “Resurrected Tour” and that will immediately put us in the mood.

Rise Up and Dead And Gone turn up the heat considerably.  The musicians are in good shape and super complicit. They really seem to be having a good time. John Corabi, great vocals, dressed in a total black look, wears a beautiful daisy print scarf (I want the same !!). He warmly encourages everyone to shout, applaud and get involved. He often leans towards the front rows, gesturing, doing horns and smiles. The front rows are over the moon!

Doug Aldrich, vest open on his chest, sends killer riffs and burning solos. He often plays on the side of the stage and unleashes himself like a real guitar hero by striking poses, grimacing in support, to the delight of the front rows, who phone in hand, immortalize the moments and do not even hesitate to touch his feet. Mighty Doug!!

Michael Devin, excellent on bass, also provides backing vocals and David Lowy, as conductor, seem a little more reserved and perform their tasks assiduously, while offering themselves moments of complicity with John and Doug, while behind, installed at the elevated drums, Brian Tichy sends heavy stuff.

After the first 3 tracks, I give my place back to the nice young man (Thank you again) and I find a place next to the control room where I can more or less see what is happening on stage.

As expected, the set list is a real “best of”. The tracks follow one another with efficiency. The sound and lights are excellent, I have rarely seen such beautiful quality in such a small room.

The audience appreciates it and is receptive even if we can’t say it’s madness in the pit. Everyone enjoys this good time of Rock N’ Roll in their own way.

For the anthem Make Some Noise, John will ask everyone to put their arms in the air. The song will set the stage on fire with its resounding rhythmic. Face I Love, Unspoken, Bustle and Flow, Lock ‘n’Load, Born To Fly follow one another: the energy and atmosphere are at the top. The musicians have a blast and the audience enjoys it religiously!

Brian will offer us a thunderous drum solo, while having fun juggling a good number of drumsticks thrown into the air.

A very pleasant moment with John Corabi who takes the time to introduce each musician and offer him his moment of glory: each one performs a very well-known title and the result will be a medley of super famous pieces that delight the audience who applauds loudly each time. 

For David – Highway to hell (AC/DC), for Brian – Living after midnight (Judas Priest), for Michael Heaven And Hell (Black Sabbath), for Doug “The Man with the Golden Hair and the Golden Guitar” it will be Smoke On The Water (Deep Purple) and for John –We’re An American Band (Grand Funk Railroad.)

During the presentation of Michel, “the new kid” of the gang, John tells us how he met him for the first time, when he went to his ex-wife’s house, because indeed Michael is his ex-wife’s new boyfriend and he wants to thank him, in a humorous way, for taking care of her! Briefly, it was the “People” moment of the show!

Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Fortunate Son monument song will be greeted with huge enthusiasm. Before singing Mexico, Corabi will launch into a big crowd questing about the drinks they like: “You have something in France with wine. But do you like beer? What about whisky? Do you like tequila? Do you want to go for a trip to Mexico?

The audience will loudly respond every time. The excellent track will be performed on a stage bathed in red, white and green lights, the colors of the Mexican flag.

The combo will leave the stage after the cover Midnight Moses before coming back to offer the electric Long way to go and ending in beauty with the unmissable cover of Whitesnake, Slide it in.

Tonight, the charismatic The Dead Daisies offered us a fabulous moment of old school Rock N’ Roll in a very warm atmosphere. An electric show of 1h40 with exceptional musicians happy to play together and give their best to satisfy their audience.

Thank you, dear Daisies, for the excellent energy and the very friendly communication! Only Good Vibes! We had a blast!

The only downside for me is the venue: really not practical for a concert: you can’t move around, it’s impossible to watch properly unless you come very early to find a place in front of the stage (but it remains to be tested) and there are a lot of icy drafts!

I really hope to see them again soon in a more suitable room! Long live Rock N’ Roll!
