2023 fut une année très intense pour groupe hard rock 100% féminin, THUNDERMOTHER. D’abord, un changement radical de line up car Majsan Lindberg (basse), Linnéa Vikström (chant) et Joan Massing (batterie) ont rejoint la fondatrice du groupe, Filippa Nässil (guitare) (avec qui vous avez déjà fait connaissance sur notre site).

Ensuite, les rockeuses ont beaucoup tournés en 2023 et ont cumulé un palmarès impressionnant de concerts dans le monde entier dans des festivals, en headline et notamment en première partie du groupe légendaire, SCORPIONS.

Le 3 novembre, elles ont dévoilé le premier single avec leur line up actuelle I Left My License In The Future, un morceaux rock, catchy et super énergique, très prometteur pour un futur album écrit par la nouvelle line up.

Et pour finir cette année tout en beauté, le groupe suédois embarquera dans une mini tournée européenne qui passera par l’Allemagne, la Suisse, les Pays Bas et bien sûr pas la France – où on pourra les retrouver à Paris le 29/11/2023 au Petit Bain.

En juin dernier à HELLFEST, le concert de THUNDERMOTHER s’est déroulé sous une pluie battante, ce qui a empêché nombreux d’entre nous d’accéder à la Mainstage1. Si malheureusement, j’ai raté ce concert (enfin, je l’ai quand même regardé live sur l’écran), je n’ai pas raté la rencontre très sympathique avec Majsan et Joan et je vous propose donc aujourd’hui de faire leur connaissance : musique, mode, influences, Scorpions, Placebo, découvrez notre interview ! N’oubliez pas de venir les voir en concert à Paris.

Comment allez-vous mesdames, comment a été ce concert sous la pluie ?

Majsan : J’ai adoré. Ce n’était pas mal du tout. Ce n’est pas souvent qu’on a l’occasion de jouer sous la pluie. C’est bien pour changer. Le public a été vraiment été très courageux et ils sont restés. 

Joan : Nous sommes vraiment fiers d’eux.

Vous avez fait beaucoup de festivals ces derniers temps, comment trouvez- vous le Hellfest par rapport aux autres festivals ?

Majsan : C’est énorme, il y a tellement de groupes. Mais nous n’avons pas eu encore eu l’occasion d’en voir beaucoup parce que nous sommes arrivées en retard et puis, c’est la première fois que je participe au Hellfest.

Joan : Pareil pour moi. C’est ma première fois au Hellfest. Après les interviews, je pense que nous allons profiter d’un peu pour voir des groupes, rencontrer des amis et voir comment le festival est construit parce qu’il est vraiment très réputé dans toute l’Europe.

Toutes les deux, vous avez récemment rejoint l’équipe de Thundermother. Comment ça se passé ?  Majsan, il me semble que tu as déjà été membre du groupe dans le passé ?

Majsan : Oui, c’est vrai, j’ai fait partie du groupe dans la passée et je suis de retour maintenant. J’en suis très heureuse et aussi très heureuse d’avoir Joan dans le groupe.

“On est tout à fait prêtes à écrire des chansons ensemble”

Joan, comment es-tu arrivée dans le groupe ? Tu es française.

Joan : Oui, parfois je suis française(rires). Eh bien, en fait, j’ai contacté Filippa par le biais des médias sociaux. On s’est envoyé des petits textos et on s’est mis d’accord pour se rencontrer en vrai, répéter ensemble et voir comment ça se passe et si ça allait marcher entre nous.  Et ça s’est bien passé. C’était assez facile et rapide. Après 2 ou 3 semaines, c’était fait.

Majsan : Tu veux dire plutôt 2 ou 3 chansons… (rires). On est allés aux répétitions juste pour essayer, La musique est importante, mais aussi la personnalité. Et Joan est une fille sympa…

Joan : (rires) Elle ment. C’est juste pour être polie.

Avant de parler de rock, parlons un peu mode. Vous tenus de scène sont vraiment géniales, comment vous les avez choisis ?

Majsan : On travaille avec une créatrice de vêtements ; elle s’appelle Ida Edlund. Elle a différentes marques et celle que nous portons s’appelle She Creatures. En général, on lui donne nos idées, à quoi nous voulons ressembler et ce qui est important est qu’on veut montrer qu’on est un groupe, mais en même temps on est différentes comme individus. Ensuite, c’est elle qui trouve les idées et elle nous transforme en rockstars. 

Joan : Je pense qu’elle a réussi à respecter nos personnalités différentes que nous avons dans le groupe. C’est très important de voir qu’on joue ensemble mais qu’on est des personnes différentes. Elle s’est vraiment très bien débrouillée et on est très contentes des tenues de scène. On a aussi eu des très bons retours à ce sujet.

Majsan : Oui, elle s’en est vraiment très bien sortie !  Merci, Ida !

Et votre style personnel dans la vie de tous les jours ?

Joan : J’aime porter des vêtements confortables parce que en général soit je joue de la batterie soit je fais du sport. J’aime évidemment les vêtements noirs, aussi parce que c’est plus facile en tournée quand on ne porte qu’une seule couleur. Il est plus facile de faire les lessives.

Je porte beaucoup de T-Shirts avec des noms de groupes depuis que je suis adolescente et je ne suis pas sûre que cela va changer un jour. Je suis dans la tradition du Rock N’Roll.

Majsan : Mon style est très simple. J’aime aussi les vêtements confortables, vous me verrez toujours porter ces pantalons très larges, aérés et aussi des jeans. J’aime pratiquement tout et ces vêtements que je porte maintenant, c’est pour la route.

Revenons à la musique. Quelle a été votre première influence musicale ?

Majsan : Les Beatles.

Joan : Placebo. Quand j’avais 8 ou 9 ans. Je pense que le son de Placebo est très reconnaissable. La voix de Brian Molko est très spécifique et à ce moment-là, ils étaient au plus grand moment de leur carrière. Je suis tombée amoureuse de ce groupe qui m’a fait découvrir plus tard les groupes de rock et de métal.

Et comment tu as choisi la batterie ?

Joan : Tout d’abord, j’ai joué de la guitare pendant de nombreuses années quand j’étais adolescente. Je jouais dans un groupe de reprises et des trucs comme ça. Je m’intéressais à la batterie, mais à l’époque il n’était pas possible de jouer de la batterie à la maison parce que mes parents aimaient être tranquilles. J’ai décidé de commencer la batterie quand j’étais plus âgé, quand j’avais 19 ans et que je pouvais jouer dans mon propre appartement et dans ma salle de répétition.

En fait, j’écoutais beaucoup de musique rock et c’est en fait un album de Placebo, Battle for the Sun, qui m’a fait choisir aussi la batterie. L’un des batteurs de Placebo, Steve Forest, a un jeu de batterie très puissant. On ressent une sorte d’émotion quand il joue. C’est d’ailleurs la chanson titre, Battle for the Sun qui m’a donné envie de faire de la batterie. La partie de batterie sur cette chanson est incroyable, elle n’est pas complexe, mais elle est vraiment puissante et je suis tombé amoureuse de cette batterie.

J’écoutais beaucoup cet album et je me suis dit OK, je dois essayer la batterie. J’ai donc essayé et j’y joue depuis.

Et toi, Majsan, comment as-tu choisi la basse ?

Majsan: Je jouais beaucoup d’instruments pour m’amuser à la maison. Mon père était musicien et professeur de musique et j’ai toujours eu de la musique autour de moi. La basse a été en fait par accident. Après une soirée où quelqu’un avait besoin d’un bassiste pour son groupe, ils m’ont demandé et j’ai dit oui. Et puis, je me sentais très bien à la basse, alors j’ai persévéré.  

Joan : C’est une très bassite et elle a fait un très bon choix.

Majsan : oh, merci

Et une influence commune au sien de Thundermother ? 

Majsan : Depuis que Filippa a démarré le groupe, je pense que ça a toujours été AC/ DC, mais nous avions beaucoup d’autres influences communes comme Kiss, par exemple.

Joan : Oui, on a beaucoup d’influences communes rock et blues rock, mais on écoute aussi beaucoup d’autres choses différentes. C’est pourquoi je pense on va profiter à l’avenir de ce large éventail de sons et de grooves différents et on va écrire quelque chose de très puissant ensemble.

Vous avez tourné récemment en première partie de Scorpions, qu’avez-vous appris de cette tournée ?

Joan : On a appris beaucoup de choses. Je pense qu’on a appris sur les deux plans pour l’aspect musical mais aussi pour l’aspect humain. Personnellement, j’ai pu parler avec Mikkey Dee, le batteur et il était très gentil. J’ai pu observer son kit de très près, il m’a expliqué certaines choses et nous avons eu une excellente conversation. J’ai aussi passé beaucoup de temps avec son technicien batterie, Leo Soares, qui est très généreux. J’étais sur scène avec lui pendant tout le concert, pour voir comment ça se passe.

Je pense que je suis très reconnaissante envers les Scorpions parce qu’ils sont très généreux et que j’ai beaucoup appris. Je pense que Scorpions est un très très grand groupe, mais ils restent très humbles et vrais, ce qui est une très bonne leçon. Parce que vous pouvez voir beaucoup de musiciens qui perdent le sens du respect vers les autres.

Ce n’était pas du tout le cas avec Scorpions. Chaque membre de l’équipe a pris à un moment, un peu de temps pour avoir une petite conversation avec nous et nous féliciter pour notre show et beaucoup de choses comme ça.

Je pense que SCORPIONS sont des êtres humains d’exception et des grands musiciens. On est très chanceuses de faire partie de cette expérience.

Nouvelle musique, nouvelle tournée ? Quels sont les prochains projets ?

Majsan : Un nouvel album en cours. On le mettra en place quand on rentre à la maison, probablement pour une sortie année prochaine. 

Joan : on a été très inspirés pendant la tournée et on va utiliser cette inspiration pour les prochaines chansons à venir. On est tout à fait prêtes à écrire des chansons ensemble et donc, faisons-le !

2023 was a very intense year for the 100% female hard rock band, THUNDERMOTHER. First of all, a radical change of line-up with Majsan Lindberg (bass), Linnéa Vikström (vocals) and Joan Massing (drums) joining beginning of the year the founder of the band, Filippa Nässil (guitar) (you have already met her on our website).

Then, the rockers toured a lot and accumulated an impressive list of performances around the world: at festivals, as headliners or as opening band for the legendary band, SCORPIONS.

And to finish this year I style, on November 3rd, the girls unveiled the first single in their current line-up, I Left My License In The Future – a rock, catchy and super energetic track, a very promising debut of a future album written in the new lineup.

This November, the Swedish band will embark on a mini-European tour that will pass through Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and of course, France – where we will be able to see them in Paris, on 29/11/2023 at the Petit Bain. 

Last June at HELLFEST, THUNDERMOTHER’s performed on the Mainstage 1 under a heavy rain, which prevented many of us of seeing them. If unfortunately, I missed this concert (well, I still watched it live on the screen), I didn’t miss the very nice conversation with Majsan and Joan.

So, I propose you today to get to know them: music, fashion, influences, Scorpions, Placebo, discover our interview! And don’t forget to come and see them live in Paris.

How are you ladies, how was the gig under that heavy rain?

Majsan: I love it. It was not bad all. It’s not often that we get to play in the rain. It’s nice for a change. The audience, they were very braved and stayed.

Joan: We are really proud of them.

You did a lot of festivals lately; how do you find Hellfest in comparison with the other festivals?

Majsan: it’s huge, so many bands. We didn’t actually get to see so much of it yet because we were quite late here and it’s my first time in Hellfest.

Joan: Same for me. it’s actually our first time in Hellfest. After the interviews, I think we are going to enjoy some time off, to see some bands, meet with some friends and to see how the festival is built. Because it is very famous all-around Europe and France.

You two recently joined the Thundermother team…well, I think Majsan actually you have already been a member of the band in the past

Majsan:  Yes, that’s true, so I am back now and very happy about it. And I am very happy to have also Joan in the band.

“We are very ready to write songs together “

And Joan, how did you get in the band? You are French…

Joan: (laughing) yes, sometimes I am French. Well, actually I reached out Fillippa by social media. We text it a little bit to see how it goes and we agreed to meet in real life, rehearse and to see how it goes. And it went well.  So, it was quite easy and quickly. After 2 or 3 weeks, it was done.

Majsan: You mean rather 2 or 3 songs… (laughing). We went to rehearsals just trying out, playing together. Music is important but also checking out also her personality, she is a nice girl…

Joan: (laughing) she is lying now because she has to be polite.

Before talking about Rock, let’s talk fashion. Your stage outfits and they are really great, how did you choose them?   

Majsan: We have a clothing designer; her name is Ida Edlund. She has some different brands and the one we are wearing is She Creatures. So, we give her our ideas, how we want to look like and put like a mention, you can see that we are a band but we are different individuals. She come up with the ideas and then she makes us look like rockstars.

Joan: I think she succeeded in trying to respect every different personality that we have in the band and I think that it is very important to see that we are all playing together but we are different people. She really did great and we are happy about the stage outfits. We really had very good feedback about that.

Majsan: Yeah, she really did great!  Thank you, Ida!

How about your personal style?

Joan: I like wearing comfortable clothes because I am either drumming either doing some sports. I like obviously black clothes, also because it is easier on tour when you are wearing only one colour. It’s easier to wash your stuff. I am wearing a lot of T-Shirts with the name of bands since I am a teenager and I am not sure that this will change one day. I am in the Rock N’ Roll tradition way of fashion.

Majsan: My style is very simple. I also like comfortable clothes, you will see me always wearing these really big pants, airy pants and also jeans. I like basically everything.

Let’s go back to music. Who was your first musical influence?

Majsan: The Beatles.

Joan: Placebo. When I was 8 or 9 because, I think that the sound of Placebo is very recognizable. Brian Molko’s voice is very specific and that time they were at their biggest moment of their career and I absolutely fell in love with that band, which introduced me later to rock and metal bands.

And how did you choose drums?

Joan: First, I play guitar for many years when I was teenager. I played in a cover band and stuff like that and I was interested in drums but at the time it was not possible to play drums at home because my parents liked to be quiet at home. I decided to started drums when I was older, when I was 19 and I could play in my own appartement and in my practice room.

In fact, I was listening to a lot of rock music and that’s actually a Placebo album, Battle for the Sun, that made me choose also drums because one of the Placebo drummer Steve Forest has a very powerful drumming and also you feel some kind of emotion when he is playing. I would say that it’s actually the song title Battle for the Sun that make me choose the drums. The drum part on that song is amazing, it’s not complex but it’s really powerful and I fell in love with that drumming.

I was listening a lot to that album and I said OK, I need to try the drums and then I’m playing since then.

And you Majsan, how did you choose the bass?

Joan: I played a lot of instruments for fun at home. My dad was a musician and music teacher and I always had music around me. The bass was actually by accident. After a party when someone needed a bass player for their band, they asked me and I said yes. And then, I felt very good playing bass, so I stuck with it. 

Joan: She is a very good player and she made a very good choice.

Majsan: Thank you

How about a common influence in Thundermother?

Majsan: Since Filippa started the band, I think it was always AC DC but we had lot of other common influences like Kiss, for example.

Joan: Yes, we have a lot of common influences about rock and blues rock band but we also are listening to a lot of different stuff. This is why, I think we are going to have a very strong music in the future. Have a common influence and then, have a wide range of different sound and groove, we can take advance of that.

You guys have been touring for a long time with Scorpions, what did you learn from this tour?

Joan: We learned a lot of things. I think we learned on both levels for the musical aspects but also for the human aspect. Personally, I was able to speak with Mikkey Dee, the drummer, and he was very nice. I was able to watch his kit very closely, he explained me some stuff and we had a great conversation. I also spent a lot of time with his drum tech, Leo Soares, who is very generous. I was on stage with him to see the whole show, to see how it goes.

I think I am very grateful to Scorpions because they are very generous and I’ve learned a lot. I think that Scorpions is a very very big band but they stay very humble and true which is quite a good lesson because you can see a lot of musicians that are losing the sense of being respectful with other people. It wasn’t the case at all with Scorpions. Every member of the team took at one point, some time for us to have a little chat and to say congratulations for the support show, we are happy with it and lot of stuff like that. I think Scorpions are great human beings and great musicians. We are very lucky to be part of this experience.

What are the next projects? new music, new tour?

Majsan: Yes, new album it’s on going. We will put it together when we get back home, probably for a next year release.

Joan: We are very inspired by the fact that we are on tour, we are going to use that in the next coming songs. We are very ready to write songs together and yeah, let’s do that!
