LARKIN POE – Splendid Show – Olympia, Paris 15.10.2023

Cet octobre, le duo blues rock américain, LARKIN POE, formé par les sœurs Rebecca et Megan Lovell est enfin arrivé en France pour une série de 5 concerts dans le cadre de leur tournée Blood Harmony. Le 15 octobre, elles se produisait à L’Olympia, Paris et j’avais hâte de les voir sur scène pour la première fois !

D’abord, un petit rappel pour ceux que ne les connaissent pas ! Originaires de Géorgie et désormais basées à Nashville, le sœur Lovell, Rebecca (lead vocal, guitare électrique, mandoline) et Megan (harmonies, lap steel, dobro) se sont imprégnées de toutes les influences musicales de la région : le blues, le gospel, la country, le rock & roll ou le bluegrass et au fil des albums, 6 en total, elles ont réussi à se façonner une belle identité blues rock, insufflant une nouvelle énergie au genre avec une perspective avant-gardiste et une approche résolument féminine.

Elles ont fait leurs débuts musicaux en 2005, alors qu’elles n’étaient que des adolescents. Après la séparation de leur groupe d’origine de bluegrass/americana, The Lovell Sisters (formé avec leur sœur ainée Jessica) Rebecca et Megan ont formé Larkin Poe en 2010. Elles ont donc pratiquement joué ensemble pendant plus de la moitié de leur vie d’où leur solide réputation live.

Et si ce nom, Larkin Poe, vous intrigue, sachez que c’est le nom de leur arrière-arrière-arrière-grand-père qui est un cousin du célèbre poète et écrivain Edgar Allan Poe.

Mais passons donc à cette soirée tant attendue !

Le 5 canadiens de The Sheepdogs démarrent les hostilités à 20h pile. C’est parti pour 45 minutes de funky Rock N’Roll très agréable.

Quasi inconnu en France, avec de références comme Lynyrd Skynyrd, Creedence Clearwater Revival ou The Allman Brothers Band, le quintet de Saskatoon, en Saskatchewan (aie difficile de prononcer et même d’écrire !!!) existe depuis 2004 et c’est un groupe vraiment culte, en particulier en Amérique du Nord, où ils ont été les tout premiers artistes non signés à figurer sur la couverture de Rolling Stone. Ils ont également participé à des nombreuses cérémonies de remise de prix musicaux aux USA et Canada.

Le groupe a 8 albums à son actif, dont un live « Live at Lee’s » sorti l’année dernière. Ils jouent un rock classique bien garni d’excellents duos des guitares : Ewan Currie (lead vocals, guitars) et Ricky Paquette (guitare, backing vocals) et des belles harmonies vocales auxquels tout le monde participe y compris Ryan Gullen (bass, backing vocals), Sam Corbett (batterie, percussion, backing vocals), Shamus Currie (clavier, trombone, guitare, backing vocals).

Les morceaux sont dynamiques agrémentés des mélodies entrainantes et des refrains très accrocheurs qui plaisent au public. Si au début le combo chevelu semble un peu timide, il se lâche au fur et à mesure grâce à l’accueil chaleureux du public.

Les solos de guitares sont nombreux et exécutés avec beaucoup de talent et passion par le très sympathique Ricky Paquette souvent complice avec le bassiste chevelu et moustachu, Ryan Gullen.

Le frère d’Ewan, Shamus se démarque par sa polyvalence aux claviers, guitare, basse, percussions, mais aussi par sa moustache luxuriante en concurrence acerbe avec celle de Ryan Gullen.

On passe vraiment un très un bon moment en leur compagnie.

Petite pause et voilà que sous une pluie d’ovations, à 21h15, Rebecca et Megan, visages radieuses, sourires éclatants, font irruption sur scène en saluant chaleureusement le public. Toute les deux sont habillées en blanc, jeans, T Shirts et chaussures confortables – Converses pour Megan et boots lacés pour Rebecca. Elles sont accompagnées par le bassiste Tarka Layman et le batteur Ben Satterlee, également habillés en blanc.

Le coup d’envoi est donné avec Strike Gold, suivi de près par Kick The Blues et Summertime Sunset, les 3 morceaux de leur dernier superbe album, Blood Harmony sorti l’année dernière. Dès les premières notes, tout le monde est sous le charme. C’est plein d’énergie, de guitares rugissantes, des belles harmonies, de lumières vives et surtout de rires et d’émotion.

Rebecca nous ensorcèle avec sa voix bluesy, chaude et sublime et joue merveilleusement bien à une des multiples guitares. Des étoiles dans les yeux, elle bouge sur toute la scène et adresse des sourires et des encouragements à la foule.

Megan, tout aussi adorable, fournit habilement de merveilleuses harmonies vocales et elle se produit avec une guitare lap steel accrochée à son cou. Elle est constamment en mouvement, se déplaçant d’un côté à l’autre de la scène, souriant et faisant des gestes vers la foule. Souvent, elle s’accroupit sur ses genoux pour se rapprocher au plus près du public.

Et surtout, très souvent, elles jouent face à face et elles adorent le faire. Ça se voit ! C’est une complicité parfaite et lumineuse et les regarder, c’est un vrai régal.

Leur virtuosité instrumentale et les harmonies sont superbes. Il y a une connexion indéniable en tant que sœurs et musiciennes. Elles se complètent parfaitement musicalement sur scène et partagent la vedette à parts égales.

Les moments forts de leur performance sont vraiment nombreux et l’audience est enchantée. Des applaudissements et de cris de joie surgissent à chaque chanson.

Avant d’interpréter Georgia off My Mind, magnifique morceau blues enthousiaste gorgé d’émotion, Rebecca nous confiera que c’est un morceau dédié à leurs terres natales.

L’un des moments les plus poignants de la soirée sera la superbe reprise de Preachin Blues (Son House) qui nous plonge dans une ambiance bluegrass et rock sudiste couronné par un sublime solo exécuté parfaitement par Megan.

She is a Sef Made Man est ravageuse avec ses riffs électriques et sa voix puissante, même si Rebecca se trompe au de début et elles doivent redémarrer. Elle s’amusera bien de cette faute tout au long du show. Le public est totalement engagé et en adoration.

Vers la moitié du show, un moment acoustique avec les quatre musiciens réunis au milieu de la scène pour de merveilleuses interprétations de leurs tubes Might As Well Be Me et Southern Comfort, percussions et contrebasse se joignent aux deux guitares.

Un bon moment pour les membres du groupe pour porter un toast à la foule avant de se lancer dans une pétillante version de Crocodile Rock, la chanson de Elton John qui verra l’Olympia se transformer dans une immense chorale avec des OOOOOO et des applaudissements dans le rythme qui feront le bonheur des Rebecca et Megan.

La sublimissime Holy Ghost Fire, les riffs brillants et la puissance de Bad Spell soulèvent toute la salle alors que le hard rock et la force de Wanted Woman – ACDC donne un véritable coup de fouet.

Les interactions avec la foule sont nombreuses et naturelles et apportent beaucoup de des sourires et des rires. Que ça soit pour remercier le public pour d’être venu les voir au lieu de regarder le match de Rugby (la France jouait le quart de finale contre l’Afrique du Sud dans le cadre la Coupe Mondiale de Rugby), ou pour exprimer leur joie de jouer dans la salle mythique d’Olympia dont elles ont tant entendu parler.

Rebecca nous rappelle aussi que 2023 est une année importante pour les Lovell Sisters car cela marque 18 ans depuis que les sœurs tournent ensemble.

L’énergique Bolt Cutters & The Family Name terminera le set en beauté et les fans réagissent avec encore plus d’enthousiasme en sachant qu’on se rapproche de la fin.

Un magnifique rappel avec Deep Stays Down et son démarrage A cappella, marécageux, lent et dépouillé sans guitares pour exploser à mi-chemin dans un rock lourd et puissant où Rebecca martèle les riffs tandis que Megan fait crier merveilleusement sa lap steel.

En total, on aura écouté neuf morceaux du nouvel album, Blood Harmony mais aussi 5 merveilleuses incursions dans leurs albums passées ainsi que 2 reprises, bref une set liste incroyablement savoureuse qui nous a fait vibrer de début jusqu’à la fin du concert.

Rebecca et Megan sont des musiciennes et des auteures-compositrices exceptionnelles qui mettent un grand accent sur la performance live. Ce qu’il y a de plus exquis et de plus remarquable dans un concert de Larkin Poe, c’est l’énergie, la joie et la parfaite complicité musicale que les deux sœurs apportent sur scène.

C’est incroyable de voir à quel point elles s’amusent sur scène, à quel point leur alchimie musicale marche et surtout à quel point elles font le maximum pour que le public se sent bien en leur compagnie.

Ce soir, on a assisté à une performance de grande classe, profondément personnelle, qui a connecté merveilleusement les générations.

Les sœurs Lovell ont complétement envouté le public de tous les âges avec des fabuleuse sonorités blues rock, des voix séduisantes, des sublimes guitares qui ont mis parfaitement en valeur l’éventail d’influences musicales du groupe.

Notons également l’admirable performance des musiciens qui les accompagnent : le bassiste Tarka Layman et le batteur Ben Satterlee.

Il est quand même difficile de trouver les bons mots sur l’émotion et le bonheur qu’on puisse ressentir devant un show Larkin Poe. C’est vraiment une performance qu’on doit vivre live, de préférence dans une salle intimiste comme l’Olympia, pour apprécier pleinement sa valeur.

C’était mon premier vrai concert de Larkin Poe et c’était vraiment génial. Il y a encore 3 dates en France et si vous avez l’occasion, foncez-y. N’hésitez pas et allez les voir. Vous allez adorer.

This October, the American blues rock duo, LARKIN POE, formed by sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell finally arrived in France for a series of 5 concerts as part of their tour Blood Harmony.

On October 15th, they were performing at L’Olympia Paris and it was a great pleasure to see them on stage for the first time!

First, a little reminder for those who don’t know them! Originally from Georgia and now based in Nashville, the Lovell sister, Rebecca (lead vocals, electric guitar, mandolin) and Megan (harmonies, lap steel, dobro) have immersed themselves in all the musical influences of the region: blues, gospel, country, rock & roll or bluegrass and over the course of the albums, 6 in total, they have managed to shape a beautiful blues rock identity, infusing new energy into the genre with an avant-garde perspective and a decidedly feminine approach.

They made their musical debut in 2005, when they were just teenagers. After their original bluegrass/Americana band, The Lovell Sisters (formed with older sister Jessica) Rebecca and Megan formed Larkin Poe in 2010. So, they have practically played together for more than half of their lives, as result, they have built a solid live reputation.

And if this name, Larkin Poe, intrigues you, you should know that it is the name of their great-great-great-grandfather who is a cousin of the famous poet and writer Edgar Allan Poe.

But let’s talk about the concert!

The 5 Canadians of The Sheepdogs had the mission to open the evening at 8 p.m. sharp and they offered us 45 minutes of funky Rock N’ Roll very enjoyable.

Almost unknown in France, with references such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Creedence Clearwater Revival or The Allman Brothers Band, the quintet from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (hard to pronounce !!) has been around since 2004 and is a truly cult band, especially in North America, where they were the very first unsigned artists to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone. They have also participated in numerous music award ceremonies in the USA and Canada.

The band has 8 albums to their credit, including a live “Live at Lee’s” released last year. They play classic rock with excellent guitar duos: Ewan Currie (lead vocals, guitars) and Ricky Paquette (guitar, backing vocals) and beautiful vocal harmonies in which everyone participates including Ryan Gullen (bass, backing vocals), Sam Corbett (drums, percussion, backing vocals), Shamus Currie (keyboards, trombone, guitar, backing vocals).

The songs are dynamic with catchy melodies and catchy choruses that appeal to the audience. If at first the hairy combo seems a little shy, it gradually become more comfortable thanks to the warm welcome of the audience.

The guitar solos are numerous and executed with a lot of talent and passion by the very nice Ricky Paquette, often complicit with the hairy and moustachioed bassist, Ryan Gullen. Ewan’s brother, Shamus, stands out for his versatility on keyboards, guitar, bass, percussion, but also for his lush moustache in fierce competition with Ryan Gullen’s. We have a really spent a good time with them.

A short break and then, under a shower of ovations, at 9:15 p.m., Rebecca and Megan, radiant faces and bright smiles, burst onto the stage and warmly greet the audience. Both are dressed in white, jeans, T-shirts and comfortable shoes – Converse for Megan and lace-up boots for Rebecca. They are accompanied by bassist Tarka Layman and drummer Ben Satterlee, also dressed in white

The kick-off is given with Strike Gold, closely followed by Kick The Blues and Summertime Sunset, the 3 tracks of their latest superb album Blood Harmony released last year and from the first notes, everyone is under the spell. It’s full of energy, with roaring guitars, beautiful harmonies, bright lights and above all, a lot of laughs and emotion.

Rebecca mesmerises us with her bluesy, warm and sublime voice and plays wonderfully well on one of her many guitars. With stars in her eyes, she moves all over the stage and smiles and cheers the crowd.

Megan, equally adorable, deftly provides wonderful vocal harmonies and she performs with a lap steel guitar hanging from her neck. She is constantly on the move, moving from one side of the stage to the other, smiling and gesturing towards the crowd. Often, she squats on her lap to get as close as possible to the audience.

And most importantly, very often, they play face to face and they love to do it. We can see it! It’s a perfect and luminous complicity and watching them, it’s a real pleasure.

Their instrumental virtuosity and harmonies are superb. There’s an undeniable connection as sisters and musicians. They complement each other perfectly musically on stage and share the spotlight equally. The highlights of their performance are really numerous and the audience is delighted. Applause and shouts of joy erupt with each song.

Before performing Georgia off My Mind, a beautiful and emotional enthusiastic blues song, Rebecca will tell us that it is a song dedicated to their native land. One of the most poignant moments of the evening will be the superb cover of Preachin Blues (Son House) which immerses us in a bluegrass and southern rock atmosphere crowned by a sublime solo perfectly executed by Megan.

She is a Sef Made Man is devastating with its electric riffs and powerful vocals, even if Rebecca starts with a wrong riff and they have to restart the song. She will have fun with this mistake throughout the show. The audience is totally engaged and in adoration.

Halfway through the show, an acoustic moment with the four musicians gathered in the middle of the stage for wonderful renditions of their hits Might As Well Be Me and Southern Comfort. Percussions and contrabass will join the 2 guitars.

A good moment for the band members to toast the crowd before launching into a sparkling version of Crocodile Rock, the song by Elton John that will see the Olympia transformed into a huge choir with lots of OOOOOO and clapping in the rhythm that will make Rebecca and Megan happy.

The sublime Holy Ghost Fire, the brilliant riffs and the power of Bad Spell lift the whole room while the hard rock and the strength of Wanted Woman – ACDC give a real boost.

The interactions with the crowd are numerous and natural and bring a lot of smiles and laughter. Whether it is to thank the audience for coming to see them instead of watching the Rugby match (France played the quarter-final against South Africa as part of the Rugby World Cup), or to express their joy to play in the mythical hall of Olympia that they have heard so much about. Rebecca also reminds us that 2023 is an important year for the Lovell Sisters as it marks 18 years since the sisters toured together.

The energetic Bolt Cutters & The Family Name will end the set on a high note and fans react with even more enthusiasm knowing that we are getting closer to the end.

A magnificent encore with Deep Stays Down and it’s A cappella start, swampy, slow and stripped down without guitars to explode halfway in a heavy and powerful rock where Rebecca hammers the riffs while Megan wonderfully screams her lap steel.

In total, we will have listened to nine tracks from the new album, Blood Harmony but also 5 wonderful incursions into their past albums as well as 2 covers, in short, an incredibly tasty set list that made us vibrate from the beginning to the end of the concert.

Rebecca and Megan are fabulous musicians and songwriters and they put a strong focus on their live performance.

The most exquisite and outstanding about a Larkin Poe show is the energy, the joy, the perfect musical complicity that the two sisters bring to the stage. It’s amazing to see how much fun they have on stage, how much their musical chemistry works and most importantly, how much they do to make the audience feel good in their company.

Tonight, we enjoyed a classy, deeply personal performance that wonderfully connected generations. The Lovell sisters completely captivated audiences of all ages with fabulous blues rock sounds, seductive vocals, sublime guitars that showcased the band’s range of musical influences. Also noteworthy is the admirable performance of the musicians who accompany them: bassist Tarka Layman and drummer Ben Satterlee

It’s hard to find the right words for the emotion and happiness you can feel in front of a Larkin Poe show. It’s really a performance that you have to experience live, preferably in an intimate venue like the Olympia, to fully appreciate it.

It was my first real Larkin Poe concert and it was really great. There are still 3 dates in France and if you have the opportunity, go for it. Don’t hesitate and go see them. You’ll LOVE it.
