Ok, je l’avoue, en ce moment, je croule littéralement sous les communiqués de presse au sujet des nouveaux artistes à découvrir et sous le nombre incalculable des nouveaux albums à écouter.  Pas facile à faire le tri, je vous assure ! Mais parmi eux un nom s’est démarqué : WINGS OF STEEL et je tenais absolument vous en parler.

Nouveau venu sur la scène internationale, WINGS OF STEEL est un groupe 100% indépendant formé en 2019 par le chanteur Leo Unnermark et le guitariste Parker Halub. L’un est suédois, l’autre californien, ils se sont rencontrés à Los Angeles où ils étudiaient la musique dans le même établissement. Partageant un amour commun pour le hard rock et heavy metal des années 70 et 80, les deux amis ont donc fini par fonder le groupe de leurs rêves.

Jusqu’à là, vous allez dire, ok, rien de spécial !  Sauf que ces deux-là ont sorti en mai 2023 un album tout simplement renversant : « Gates of Twilight ». Une grosse claque dès la première écoute !

Gates of Twilight est une véritable ode à la gloire du heavy métal classique des années ’80s enrichie des sonorités modernes et rafraichissantes terriblement accrocheuses.

Les neuf chansons qui composent l’album sont toutes admirablement écrites et produites (le mix est l’œuvre d’un français installé à L.A : Damien Rainaud, connu pour son travail avec DragonForce, Baby Metal, Fear Factory et Angra).

Chaque morceau est construit sur les riffs majestueuses et les solos fantastiques du Halub, tout en mettant en valeur le registre vocal extraordinaire et très varié de Leo Unnermark qui va facilement du crooner jusqu’aux spectaculaires falsettos.

Dès l’ouverture, avec la puissante Liar in Love, on ne sait pas ce qui nous frappe en premier, la voix exceptionnelle d’Unnermark ou les riffs hallucinants de Halub. Et c’est le cas tout au long de l’album.

Fall in Line, Cry of the Damned ou la chanson titre, Gates of Twilight sont agressifs et directs, gorgées des riffs lourds, des solos vertigineux et des acrobaties vocales impressionnantes.

Garden of Eden, Lady of the Lost ou Slaves of Sorows dévoilent des crochets mémorables et des touches hard rock et blues d’un beauté inouïe.

Sur She Cries, la mélodie est sublime, le chanteur nous épate avec sa voix bluesy et sa capacité d’aller très très haut dans les aigues, alors que la guitare sauvage et la section rythmique fracassante explosent tout sur leur passage.

Et que dire du dernier morceau, Into The Sun ? Pure merveille atmosphérique dans lequel les guitares bluffantes d’élégance y font la loi et le chant est à couper le souffle.

Si vous êtes fan de métal classique, si vous aimez Whitesnake, Helloween ou Queensryche, avec Gates of Twilight, le groupe américain va vous transporter dans des territoires sonores grandioses où le métal règne. Leur potentiel est illimité.

En conclusion, WINGS OF STEEL déploie ses ailes (en acier) et s’empare de la planète heavy metal avec un premier album massif et brillant ! Mais il faut vraiment écouter pour y croire.

Ok, I’ll admit it, right now, I’m literally drowning in press releases about new artists to discover and countless new albums to listen to.  It’s not easy to sort it out, I assure you!

Among them, one name stood out, WINGS OF STEEL, and I absolutely wanted to tell you about it. 

A newcomer to the international scene, WINGS OF STEEL is a 100% independent band formed in 2019 by singer Leo Unnermark and guitarist Parker Halub. One is Swedish, the other Californian, they met in Los Angeles where they were studying music at the same school. Sharing a common love for the hard rock and heavy metal of the 70s and 80s, the two friends ended up founding the band of their dreams.

Until then, you’re going to say, okay, nothing special!  Except that these two released in May 2023 a stunning debut album: “Gates of Twilight”. Awestruck from the first listening!

Gates of Twilight is a true ode to the glory of 80’s classic heavy metal enriched with modern and refreshing elements insanely catchy.

The nine songs that make up the album are all beautifully written and produced (the mix is the work of a Frenchman based in L.A.: Damien Rainaud, known for his work with DragonForce, Baby Metal, Fear Factory and Angra).

Each track is built on the majestic riffs and fantastic solos of Halub, while showcasing Leo Unnermark’s extraordinary and highly varied vocal range that easily ranges from crooning to spectacular falsettos. From the opening, with the powerful Liar in Love, we don’t know what strikes us first, Unnermark’s exceptional voice or Halub’s hallucinatory riffs. And that’s the case throughout the album.

Fall in Line, Cry of the Damned or the title track, Gates of Twilight are aggressive and direct, full of heavy riffs, dizzying solos and impressive vocal acrobatics. 

Garden of Eden, Lady of the Lost or Slaves of Sorows are slower, unveiling memorable hooks and hard rock and blues touches of incredible beauty.

On She Cries, the melody is sublime, the singer amazes us with his bluesy voice and his ability to sing very very high, while the wild guitar and the shattering rhythm section explode everything in their path.

And what about the last track, Into The Sun? A pure atmospheric marvel in which the bluffing guitars of extreme elegance rule and the vocals are breathtaking.

If you are a fan of classic metal, if you like Whitesnake, Helloween or Queensryche, with Gates of Twilight, the American band will transport you to grandiose sonic territories where heavy metal reigns. Their potential is limitless.

In conclusion, WINGS OF STEEL spreads its (steel) wings and takes and conquer the heavy metal planet with a massive and brilliant debut album! But you really have to listen to believe it.
