“Remember the Name… THE STRUTS” – Fabulous ROCKSTARS at Trabendo, Paris 23.08.2023 – Concert Review

Beaucoup de choses se sont passées à Paris dans ce 23 août 2023 caniculaire : Imagine Dragons a donné un deuxième concert complet à la Défense Aréna, le festival Rock En Seine a ouvert ses portes au Domaine National de Saint Cloud avec une line up entièrement féminine, Billie Eilish en tête d’affiche et The STRUTS se produit sur la scène de Trabendo après 4 années d’absence sur les scènes de l’hexagone.

Fans de la première heure du groupe anglais ici à Rock Art Fashion, notre choix a été évidemment facile car, The STRUTS est l’un de ses groupes rock formidable qu’il ne faut jamais rater en live.

Un mélange des Stones et de Queen, de chansons gorgées de folie glam rock, des mélodies accrocheuses qui restent gravés dans votre tête à jamais, un style facilement indentifiable, surtout grâce à l’extraordinaire timbre vocal de frontman charismatique : Luke Spiller.

Au cours des dernières années, le quatuor anglais a pris de l’ampleur. Des tournées intensives en tête d’affiche ou en première partie de Foo Fighters et des Rolling Stones les ont catapultés sous les projecteurs et les ont fait gagner une très bonne réputation.

Après leur album Strange Days sorti en 2020 en pleine pandémie, les britanniques ont sortis plusieurs singles accrocheurs annonciateurs d’un nouvel album, le 4eme, prévu pour le 3 novembre et intitulé Pretty Vicius. Nous voilà donc ce soir, parmi ceux qui auront la chance d’écouter en live plusieurs extraits de ce disque très attendu.

A 19h30, le coup d’envoi est donné par Bad Nerves, un groupe de Power Pop Rock N’Roll (comme il se définissent eux même) originaire d’Essex. Ça sonne bien et la salle est très réceptive. Il fait déjà une chaleur écrasante dans la salle, mais la fosse quasiment remplie saute et chante avec joie sur des sonorités punk rock super énergiques.

Je rétiens notamment Radio Punk et son refrain catchy repris en cœur par le publicet le punchy Can’t Be Mine. Le chanteur visiblement touché par l’accueil enthousiaste du public nous annonce que c’est leur dernier concert avec The Struts mais qu’ils reviendront à Paris le 24 octobre 2023 (à L’international). Un groupe à revoir absolument.

A 20h30 quand c’est le tour de The STRUTS de monter sur scène, la salle est bondée (le concert est annoncé sold out). Je réussi difficilement à me faufiler au premier rang et grâce à quelques fans bienveillantes (que je remercie chaleureusement) j’arrive à trouver une petite place pour pouvoir prendre quelques photos. Il fait vraiment une chaleur extrême. Dans la foule, beaucoup ont sorti les éventails et les ventilateurs de poche.

Luke Spiller (chant), Adam Slack (guitare), Jed Elliott (basse) et Gethin Davies (batterie) arrivent enfin et explosent carrément l’ambiance avec deux morceaux qui sont désormais des classiques du groupe Dirty Sexy Money et Body Talks accueillis avec un énorme enthousiasme par la foule compacte et survolté. Même s’il n’y a pas beaucoup de place, on est vraiment épaule contre épaule, la plupart trouve le moyen de sauter et danser en agitant les bras en l’air. Ambiance de folie !

Deux nouveaux morceaux : l’excellent Fallin’ With Me et Too Good at Raising Hell et son remarquable solo d’Adam sont acclamés avec tout autant d’enthousiasme. Le public se manifeste avec des hurlements et une marée de bras en l’air. C’est torride !

Luke, sourire éclatant sur son visage, se déplace en long et en large de la scène énergiquement en faisant de grands gestes vers la foule et pointe son micro vers les fans devant et mais aussi vers les fans derrière en veillant à ce que tout le monde soit inclus dans le spectacle. Il ne manque pas de nous rappeler « This is a Rock N Roll show »

Maquillage glamour pailleté sur les yeux, pantalon noir en cuir, chemise brillante, bottines rock blanches imprimée des lèvres rouges, le chanteur incarne à la perfection le frontman glam rock. Il danse, saute, exécute des pirouettes, tout en encourageant la foule à agiter et à taper les mains au-dessus de leurs têtes. Il touche les mains et les têtes des premiers rangs. Adam et Jed sautent et sillonnent la scène pour engager la foule.

Les 3 sont vraiment très proches devant la foule, juste en bord de la scène tandis que Geth à la batterie se déchaine derrière ses fûts en brandissant ces baguettes.

Il n’est pas étonnant qu’avec la chaleur et l’énergie débordante sur scène, tout le groupe est trempé de sueur dès les premières chansons. On dira que le chanteur s’est pris un sceau d’eau sur la tête, mais rien ne l’empêche de continuer de bouger avec autant de ferveur et de dynamisme.

Luke ne manque pas de remercier la France qui, comme il nous le rappelle, a donné la chance au The Struts bien avant les USA où en ce moment ils connaissent une énorme popularité.

Kiss This remonte encore un peu le tempo incendiaire du concert. Primadona like me, All Dressed up, In Love With a Camera les tubes s’enchaînent avec intensité et sans répit pour les spectateurs qui malgré la chaleur, sont tout aussi motivées et rebondissent à chaque morceau.

Vers le milieu du show, petit moment accalmie avec d’abord, l’hymne One Night Only, occasion pour Luke de s’installer au piano. Ça sonne merveilleusement bien. Les solos de guitare sont à tomber. Adam et Jed encouragent les fans de taper dans les mains.

Ensuite, alors que le reste du groupe quitte la scène, Luke et Adam interprètent la magnifique et émouvante Mary Go Round et Low Key in Love à la lumière de torches de téléphones.

Le chanteur continue encourager l’audience de chanter et de taper dans les mains « Clap your sticky hands ».

La reprise de Royals, la chanson de Lorde, est tout simplement royale, suivi d’un excellent guitar jamming exécuté brillamment par Adam. Avant d’interpréter Pretty Vicious, Luke nous informe que c’est la chanson titre du nouvel album. Excellente rythmique et des riffs puissantes.

Les musiciens nous régaleront des quelques mots en français de chacun, Jed nous dit « vous êtes parfait » Gethin nous raconte que son ex copine qui lui a brisé le cœur était française et maintenant il cherche sa nouvelle chérie. Luke s’aventure dans quelques gros mots comme « merde » et « putain » pour exprimer plutôt son mécontentement contre la chaleur, mais il nous fait aussi plusieurs déclarations d’amour « Paris je t’aime ».

Alors que nous approchons de la fin du set, Luke demande à tout le monde de mettre les bras en l’air car Where Did She Go est la prochaine chanson. La foule est ravie et le ballet coordonnée des bras synchronisés dans l’air tout au long de la chanson est électrisant. Immense énergie ! Ensuite place à la présentation du groupe.

Put Your Money on Me sera chanté au début a capella et Luke fera chanter longuement la foule avec de oh yeah, nananan, etc et comme d’habitude il fera un concours d’applaudissements entre le côté droit et le côté gauche de la scène. La foule n’est pas encore fatigué et se plie à ses demandes avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme. C’est le côte droit, celui de Jed qui va gagner !

Il demandera aussi qui n’a jamais assisté à un spectacle de Struts auparavant et vu les bras levés, on dira la moitié de la salle. Il souhaite la bienvenue à tout le monde dans la « famille ». Une fois le morceau terminé le groupe se retirer backstage sous des cris et des applaudissements sauvages.

Pour le rappel, Luke revient tous seul pour interpréter au piano de Bohemian Rapsody en guise d’introduction pour le morceau Fire (Part 1). Sa voix époustouflante résonne dans la salle alors que tout le monde allume de nouveau les téléphones. De nouveau, il adresse des chaleureux remercîments à tout le monde avant de présenter le groupe et entamer le méga hit « Could Have Been Me », la fin idéale de cette grande célébration du Rock N’Roll ! Un nouvel élan euphorique de la part d’un public survolté qui décidément n’est pas près de rentrer à la maison.

Tout sourires, le groupe nous dira au revoir et Luke restera sur scène pour signer des autographes.

Quel Concert de Dingue ! Pur Bonheur Rock N’Roll !!

Avec une énergie rock ravageuse, un set list de folie, une impeccable présence scénique et une impressionnante capacité à se connecter avec ses fans, THE STRUTS a magistralement démontré encore une fois qu’il est l’un de groupes le plus exaltants du rock actuel.

Luke respire le charisme. Sa présence est magnétique, sa personnalité est exubérante et sa voix impressionnante. Il a réussi à captiver tous les regards. Il a engagé le public en permanence, les encourageant à se joindre aux chants et aux applaudissements. Et avec ses formidables acolytes, tous les quatre, ont littéralement pulvérisé la foule ce soir. Des veritables ROCKSTARS!

Comme dirait Luke “Who is ready for The Struts to become the biggest band on the planet?” je dirais tout le monde!

L’intensité et la passion avec lesquelles ils se sont produits ont déclenché une véritable une explosion de joie. Le public a été émerveillé et enflammé à chaque moment de la soirée ! La magie du Rock N’Roll a illuminé nos esprits de début jusqu’à la fin.

Quel plaisir de voir grandir ce groupe qui se donne cœur et âme sur scène pour l’amour de Rock N’Roll et de leur fidèle audience. Il est impossible de ne pas tomber sur le charme.

A lot things was happening in Paris in this hot summer day of August 23, 2023: Imagine Dragons performed a second sold-out concert at the Défense Aréna, the Rock En Seine festival opened its doors at the Domaine National de Saint Cloud with an all-female line-up, Billie Eilish headlining and The STRUTS performed at Trabendo after 4 years of absence on the French stages.

Fans of the first hour of the English band here at Rock Art Fashion, our choice was obviously easy because, The STRUTS is one of this great rock bands that should never be missed live. A mix of the Stones and Queen, songs full of glam rock madness, catchy melodies that remain engraved in your head forever, a style easily identifiable, especially thanks to the extraordinary vocal timbre of charismatic frontman: Luke Spiller.

Lately the English 4 pieces band has grown. Intensive headlining or opening tours for Foo Fighters and the Rolling Stones catapulted them into the spotlight and earned them a very good reputation.

After their album Strange Days released in 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, the British released several catchy singles announcing a new album, the 4th, due for November 3 and entitled Pretty Vicius. So here we are tonight, among those who will have the chance to listen live to several songs from this highly anticipated record.

At 7.30pm, the kick-off is given by Bad Nerves, a Power Pop Rock N’Roll band (as they define themselves) from Essex. It sounds good and the room is very receptive. It’s already scorching heat in the room, but the almost full pit jumps and sings with joy to super energetic punk rock sounds.

I remember in particular Radio Punk and its catchy chorus sing along by the audience and the punchy Can’t Be Mine. The singer visibly touched by the enthusiastic welcome of the public announces that this is their last concert with The Struts but that they will be back to Paris on October 24, 2023 (à l’International). A band to follow!

At 20:30 when it is the turn of The STRUTS to go on stage, the room is packed (the concert is announced sold out). I managed to sneak into the front row, and thanks to some beautiful fans (whom I thank warmly) and I find a small place to take some pictures.

It’s really extremely hot. In the crowd, many brought out the fans and pocket fans.

Luke Spiller (vocals), Adam Slack (guitar), Jed Elliott (bass) and Gethin Davies (drums) finally arrive and explode the atmosphere with two tracks that we can consider as classics hits of the band Dirty Sexy Money and Body Talks greeted with enormous enthusiasm by the compact and excited crowd. Even if there is not much place, we are really shoulder to shoulder, most find a way to jump and dance while waving their arms in the air. Atmosphere of madness!

Two new tracks: the excellent Fallin’ With Me and Too Good at Raising Hell and the remarkable Adam’s guitar solo are acclaimed with just as much enthusiasm. The audience manifests itself with screams and a tide of arms in the air. It’s steamy!

Luke, smiling brightly on his face, moves up and down the stage energetically making big gestures towards the crowd and points his microphone at the fans in front and also at the fans behind making sure everyone is included in the show. He does not fail to remind us of “This is a Rock N Roll show”

Glamour glittery makeup over the eyes, black leather pants, shiny shirt, white rock boots printed with red lips, the singer perfectly embodies the glam rock frontman. He dances, jumps, performs pirouettes, while encouraging the crowd to wave and clap their hands above their heads. He touches the hands and heads of the front rows. Adam and Jed jump and roam the stage to engage the crowd. The 3 are really close in front of the crowd, just at the edge of the stage while Geth is unleashed behind his drums brandishing his sticks.

It’s no wonder that with the heat and boundless energy on stage, the whole band is drenched in sweat from the first songs. The singer looks like he took a bucket of water on his head, but nothing prevents him from continuing to move with as much fervour and dynamism.

Luke does not fail to thank France who, as he reminds us, gave the chance to The Struts well before the USA where they are currently experiencing enormous popularity.

Kiss This raises the incendiary tempo of the concert a little more. Primadona like me, All Dressed up, In Love With a Camera the tubes are linked with intensity and without respite for the spectators who despite the heat, are just as motivated and bounce with each song.

Towards the middle of the show, the tempo slow down a little bit with first, the anthem One Night Only, opportunity for Luke to settle at the piano. It sounds wonderful. Killer guitar solos. Adam and Jed encouraged fans to clap their hands.

Then, as the rest of the band leaves the stage, Luke and Adam perform the beautiful and moving Mary Go Round and Low Key in Love by the light of phone torches.

The singer continues to encourage the audience to sing and clap “Clap your sticky hands”. The cover of Lorde’s song Royals is simply royal, followed by an excellent guitar jamming brilliantly performed by Adam. Before performing Pretty Vicious, Luke informs us that it is the title track of the new album. Excellent rhythm and powerful riffs.

The musicians will gratify us with a few words in French of each, Jed tells us “you are perfect” Gethin tells us that his ex-girlfriend, who broke his heart, was French and now he is looking for his new sweetheart. Luke ventures into a few swear words like “shit” and “fuck” to express his displeasure with the heat, but he also makes several declarations of love “Paris, I love you”.

As we approach the end of the set, Luke asks everyone to put their arms up because Where Did She Go is the next song. The crowd is delighted and the coordinated ballet of the arms synchronized in the air throughout the song is electrifying. Immense energy!

Put Your Money on Me will be sung at the beginning a capella and Luke will make the crowd perform a long singing with oh yeah and nananan and as usual he will play the clapping competition between the right and left side of the stage. The crowd is not yet tired and is bending to his demands with great enthusiasm. It is his right side, Jed’s one that will win!

He will also ask who has never attended a Struts show before and seen arms raised, we will say half the room. He welcomes everyone to the “family”. Once the song was finished the band withdrew backstage to shouts and wild applause.

For the Encore, Luke returns alone to perform Bohemian Rapsody on the piano as an introduction to the song Fire (Part 1). His stunning voice echoes through the room as everyone turns on the phones again. Again, he sends warm thanks to everyone before introducing the band and starting the mega hit Could Have Been Me, the ideal end of this great evening of Rock N’Roll celebration! A new euphoric impulse from an excited audience that is decidedly not about to go home.

All smiles, the band will say goodbye and Luke will stay on stage to sign autographs. What a crazy concert! Pure Rock N’Roll hapiness!!!

With devastating rock energy, a crazy set list, impeccable stage presence and an impressive ability to connect with fans, THE STRUTS has masterfully demonstrated once again that they are one of the most exciting Rock N’ Roll bands nowadays.

Luke exudes charisma. His presence is magnetic, his personality is exuberant and his voice impressive. He managed to captivate everyone’s eyes. He engaged the audience constantly, encouraging them to join in the chants and applause.

And with his formidable band colleague, all four musicians literally pulverized the crowd tonight. Real ROCKSTARS!

As Luke would say

“Who is ready for The Struts to become the biggest band on the planet?” I would say Everybody!

The intensity and passion with which they performed triggered a veritable explosion of joy. The audience was amazed and inflamed at every moment of the evening!

The magic of Rock N’Roll has illuminated our minds from beginning to end. What a pleasure to see this band grow that gives heart and soul on stage for the sake of Rock N’Roll and their loyal audience. It is impossible not to fall on the charm.
