POP EVIL – Tremendous Rock Energy in Paris – 09.05.2023 – concert review

Les hard rockers de Michigan, POP EVIL, ne s’étaient pas produits à Paris depuis février 2019. Les voilà de retour dans la même salle, au Trabendo, le 9 mai 2023. Entre temps, ils ont travaillé dur et ils ont sorti 2 albums : VERSATILE, le 21 mai 2021 et SKELETONS, le 17 mars 2023.

Si je connais et j’aime déjà depuis bien longtemps les sonorités avant-gardistes et l’excellente l’habilité du groupe américain de mélanger les styles : pop, rock, métal, hip- hop, pour créer des véritables hymnes head banger et des magnifiques mélodies, ce soir c’est la première fois que je vais les voir sur scène.

J’arrive bien avant l’heure pour rencontrer l’adorable batteuse Hayley Cramer et tout de suite après l’interview, je m’installe dans la fosse, au premier rang.

A chaque album successif de leur discographie qui compte sept albums actuellement, leurs prouesses et leur renommée ont mérité de croître. Si au US le groupe est très populaire et capable de remplir de salles de plus de 1500 personnes, en France et en Europe, ils sont beaucoup moins connus. Et ce soir, vu que le fond de salle parisienne qui peut accueillir jusqu’à 700 personnes est fermé avec une bâche je me dis qu’il n’y aura pas beaucoup de monde.

Effectivement, la salle est particulièrement vide quand Call Me Amour, le groupe anglais, chargé d’ouvrir les hostilités monte sur scène. Mais les British originaires de l’ile de Man, ne se découragent pas et semble fermement décidés de mettre le feu, coute que coute. Le public est engagé dès le départ.

Le chanteur, Harry Radford, visiblement ravi d’être là saute et bouge sans arrêt tout en s’adressant au public après chaque chanson. Il descendra au milieu du public à plusieurs reprises pour chanter et inciter les gens à chanter avec lui.

Le son est rock électro accrocheur avec des guitares fortes et une batterie puissante. Le chanteur, le guitariste et le bassiste (qui a le visage complètement cache sous un bandana) bougent en long et en large de la petite scène et encourage le public en perméance. Le batteur aussi fait des grands gestes derrière son kit. C’est super énergique !

La chanteuse Lina Drae les rejoindra le temp d’un morceau, IMFKT. Deeper, une belle et émouvante chanson sur la dépendance et le rétablissement sera chanté dans le noir, la salle éclairée que par les lumières torches de téléphones.

Vers la fin, nous avons droit à une interprétation furieuse de Firestarter de The Prodigy. Très souriant et communicatif, le chanteur terminera le show à genoux sur scène mais pas avant une dernière incursion au milieu du public pour serrer des mains et faire des accolades.

Un set super sympa et passionné, une excellente bonne entrée en matière pour la soirée. Assurez-vous de suivre ces gars-là. Leur premier EP sortira très bientôt.

Une vingtaine de minutes de pause et c’est le tour de POP EVIL. Le public est à peine plus nombreux quand la batteuse Hayley Cramer, les guitaristes Davey Grah et Nick Fueling, le bassiste Joey “Chicago” Walser et le chanteur LEIGH KAKATAY entament l’explosive Paranoid (Crash & Burn), extrait de Skeletons. L’ouverture rallongé et musclée nous saisit instantanément. Les guitares grincent, la rhythmique gronde. Démarrage en trombe !

Le son est énorme mais je dirais un peu trop fort parce la voix de du charismatique frontman est à peine audible devant, là où je suis (mais après les premières chansons, j’irais vers le milieu de la salle où le son sera vraiment bon)

Deal with the Devil, Let The Chaos Reign augmentent considérablement l’énergie. Le groupe laisse vraiment le chaos régner sur scène. Leigh, Dave et Joey sautent et se déplacent tout au long de la scène, headbanging à fond et tout en encourageant la foule avec des grands gestes et des regards. Le public répond avec enthousiasme.

Hayley Cramer, derrière son kit est bouillante. Déchainée, cheveux dans le vent, elle lance des regards ensorcelés, sourires aux lèvres. Le ballet incessant de ses bras est spectaculaire. La batterie est ultra puissante et écrasante. On a l’impression que sa caisse lourde va carrément exploser. Son jeu est impressionnant.

Le combo maintiendra ce rythme effréné tout au long du concert. L’album Skeletons sera le plus représenté avec pas moins de six chansons dont Eye of the Storm, la superbe chanson titre Skeletons et évidement Dead Reckoning, la chanson la plus heavy du nouvel album, toutes magistralement jouées.

Waking Lions est mega rapide tandis la magnifique ballade, Torn to Pieces et une très belle version de 100 In A 55, interprétée a capella calmeront un peu les esprits.

Et POP EVIL ne sont pas venu tout seuls en Europe. Ils ont ramené avec eux le rappeur ZILLON invité sur l’album SKELETONS sur le morceau Raging Bull. Ensemble, ils interprèteront War Inside of Me et leur ultra-méga succès, Trenches, qui déclenche un vague de folie parmi le public, c’est vrai pas très nombreux mais extrêmement engagé et motivé.

Leigh Kakaty adresse ses remercîments à tous d’être venus ce soir et de soutenir le nouvel album. Il revient sur les dernières années et s’excuse pour toutes les perturbations qui les ont tenus à l’écart de leurs fans et ont entraîné l’annulation et le reports des tournées précédentes.

La soirée se termine avec une version XXL de Breathe Again, un morceau très fort, écrit avant la pandémie mais avec de paroles apaisantes pour tous ceux qui ont lutté ces dernières années et qui ont finalement réussi à respirer à nouveau. Prestation vocale impeccable.

Alors que la chanson touche à sa fin, tout le groupe viendra devant la scène pour saluer le public pour recevoir une longue salve d’applaudissements.

Le groupe a eu une présence énorme sur cette petite scène, sans toile de fond ni éclairage sophistiqué. POP EVIL nous a montré toutes les facettes de leurs sonorités hard rock haute énergie admirablement garni des mélodies hymniques. On a vibré, en petit comité, dans une atmosphère électrisante.

Sur scène, le groupe est très soudé et complice. Les 5 musiciens se complètent à merveille. Quelle que soit la chanson, le travail de guitare combiné de Dave Grahs et Nick Fuelling est excellent. Le nouveau bassiste Joey Walser ajoute une nouvelle touche au groupe et martèle le rythme parfaitement en compagnie de batteuse Hayley Cramer, qui nous régale d’un jeu de batterie foudroyant. Leigh est un incroyable chanteur avec une gamme vocale impressionnante et qui sais comment interagir avec les fans et prendre le commandement de la foule.

Bien que la salle n’ait pas été remplie (on apprend que c’était le plus petit concert de la tournée), les américains ont donné le meilleur d’eux-mêmes et ont fait tout ce qu’il fallait pour offrir à l’audience enthousiaste un concert fantastique. La scène était prête à s’enflammer à chaque morceau.

POP EVIL était en feu et le public (moi comprise) a adoré chaque seconde de leur performance pleine d’énergie, sans aucun temps mort. De l’adrénaline pure du début jusqu’à la fin. Un concert qu’il ne fallait vraiment pas rater. Vivement le prochain ! ( ils sont actuellement en tournée au USA)

Michigan hard rockers POP EVIL hadn’t performed in Paris since February 2019. Here they are back in the same venue, at the Trabendo, on May 9, 2023.

In the meantime, they worked hard and released 2 albums: VERSATILE, on May 21, 2021 and SKELETONS, on March 17, 2023.

If I know and I love for a long time the avant-garde sounds and the excellent ability to mix styles: pop, rock, metal, hip-hop, to create real head banger anthems and beautiful melodies, tonight is the first time I will see them on stage.

I arrive well in advance to meet the adorable drummer Hayley Cramer and immediately after the interview, I take place in the pit, front row.

With each successive album of their discography which currently counts seven albums, their fame has considerably grown. If in US the band is very popular and it is able to fill venues of more than 1500 people, in France and Europe, they are much less known.

And tonight, since the back of the Parisian room that can welcome about 700 people is closed with a tarpaulin, I tell myself that there will not be not so many people.

Indeed, the room is particularly empty when Call Me Amour, the English band, responsible for opening hostilities goes on stage. But the British from the Isle of Man, are not discouraged and seem firmly determined to set fire, cost that cost. The public is engaged from the start.

The singer, Harry Radford, visibly delighted to be there jumps and moves non-stop while addressing the audience after each song. He will go down to the middle of the audience several times to sing and encourage people to sing with him.

The sound is catchy electro rock with strong guitars and powerful drums. The singer, guitarist and bassist (whose face is completely hidden under a bandana) move up and down the small stage and encourage the audience. The drummer also makes big gestures behind his kit. It’s super energetic!

And they have a guest, the singer Lina Drae, who will join them for a song, IMFKT. Deeper, a beautiful and moving song about addiction and recovery will be sung in the dark, the room lit only by the phone’s flashlights.

Towards the end, we will hear a furious interpretation of Firestarter, The Prodigy’s song. Very smiling and communicative, the singer will finish the show kneeling on stage but not before a last incursion in the middle of the audience to shake hands and do some hugs.

A great passionate set, an excellent introduction for the evening. Be sure to follow these guys. Their first EP will be released very soon.

Around twenty minutes break and it’s POP EVIL’s turn. The audience is hardly larger than before when the drummer Hayley Cramer, the guitarists Davey Grah and Nick Fueling, the bass player Joey “Chicago” Walser and the singer LEIGH KAKATAY start the explosive Paranoid (Crash & Burn) out of Skeletons. The lengthened and muscular opening grabs us instantly. The guitars squeak, the rhythmic rumbles. Getting off to a flying start!

The sound is huge but I would say a little too loud, because the voice of the charismatic frontman is barely audible in front row, where I am (but after several songs, I would go to the middle of the room and there the sound will be really good).

Deal with the Devil and Let The Chaos Reign increase the energy considerably. The band really lets chaos reign on stage. Leigh, Dave and Joey always move throughout the stage, headbanging at full blast , jumping and constantly encouraging the crowd with big gestures and looks. The audience responds enthusiastically.

Hayley Cramer, behind her kit is boiling. Unleashed, hair in the wind, she casts bewitched glances, smiles on her lips. The incessant ballet of her arms is spectacular. The drums is ultra powerful and overwhelming. It feels like the bass drum is going to explode. Her playing is absolutely impressive.

The combo will maintain this frantic pace throughout the concert. The album Skeletons will be the most represented with no less than six songs including Eye of the Storm, the superb title track Skeletons and of course, Dead Reckoning, the heaviest song of the new album, all masterfully played.

Waking Lions is mega fast while the beautiful ballad, Torn to Pieces and a very beautiful version of 100 In A 55, interpreted a capella will calm the spirits.

And POP EVIL didn’t come to Europe alone. They brought with them the rapper ZILLON guest on the album SKELETONS on the track called Raging Bull. Together, they will perform War Inside of Me and their ultra-mega hit, Trenches, which triggers a wave of madness among the public, it is true not very numerous but extremely committed and motivated.

Leigh Kakaty thanks everyone for coming tonight and supporting the new album. He looks back on the past few years and apologizes for all the disruption that kept them away from their fans and led to the cancellation and postponement of previous tours.

The evening ends with an XXL version of Breathe Again, a very strong track, written before the pandemic but with soothing lyrics for all those who have struggled in recent years and finally managed to breathe again. Impeccable vocal performance.

As the song comes to an end, the whole band will come to the front of the stage to greet the audience to receive a long round of applause.

The band had a huge presence on the small Trabendo stage, without a backdrop or sophisticated lighting. POP EVIL showed us all the facets of their high energy hard rock sounds admirably filled with anthemic melodies. We vibrated together, in a small committee, in an electrifying atmosphere.

On stage, the band is very united and complicit. The 5 musicians complement each other perfectly. Whatever the song, the combined guitar work of Dave Grahs and Nick Fuelling is excellent. New bassist Joey Walser adds a new touch to the band and hammers the rhythm perfectly in the company of the drummer Hayley Cramer, who delights us with a lightning drumming. Leigh is an incredible singer, whit a wide vocal range who knows how to interact with fans and take command of the crowd.

Although the venue was not full (we learn that it was the smallest concert of the tour), the Americans gave the best of themselves and did everything necessary to offer the enthusiastic audience a fantastic concert. The stage was ready to ignite with each piece.

POP EVIL was on fire and the audience (myself included) enjoyed every second of their energetic performance. Pure adrenaline from start to finish. A concert that really should not be missed. We look forward to the next one! ( the band will be touring US this summer)
